Tales From The Table You get to see a lot of things from behind a trader’s table at makers’ markets and craft fairs, and meet quite the range of people! Lisa has been selling at a variety of events since she was a teenager, and some of her tales are cautionary, some simply amusing, but all of them, honestly are true.
A Row Of Pretty Pollies
You're probably aware of stall holders having a “patter”, you know, when blokes with fruit and veg yell a couple of different phrases on repeat (“naaaarners phaundabunch”) I've found it’s not so different with designer makers selling at events, although thankfully we tend not to bellow them across the venue we’re selling in. I have a couple of stock phrases, varied to suit how I've gauged the browsing potential customer, and also a handful of ready small jokes tied into them. “Do feel free to pick things up to have a look rather than bending over. Have you developed “craft fair browser’s back” yet?”. This also means that part of me breaking the ice with nearby stall holders is to josh about how often they'll hear me repeat the same things, and an apology in advance that they’ll get fed up of it.

This opening chat, at a smaller church hall fair, led to my older adjoining stall holder confessing she'd only done a handful of events with her new business, and she was never quite sure how to open a conversation with people looking at her jewellery. After a bit of back and forth natter, she decided to tell people that her jewellery is all sterling silver, that she does make it all herself in her own studio, and what influenced a couple of the designs. As the morning wore on, I'm chirping at people “Do pick things up…” and she's increasingly confident to chip at people “If you like that, it's inspired by…”. Eventually, the knitwear lady next to her makes a joke about us both being so chatty, although it does seem to get people to stop, look and buy. So she breaks out of her knitting reverie, starts to look people in the eye, and tell them “It's all natural wool, no acrylic, have a feel of this…”I have no idea how the stall holders opposite us survived the final couple of hours of that event, but I for one know that our little row of peeping and chittering phrases was practically in my dreams that night!

The Paperbox Inspires Us To Create For Easter We had a lovely surprise the other week when we were sent a fabulous selection of paper supplies from The Paperbox Limited. It's been a busy time here at Creative Crafting so we still have to make some Easter cards with the lovely card blanks and envelopes but I have spent a fun few hours creating a few bits.
Paper Bunny Box First, I used some of the thick paper (I chose pink) to make a great little box which will be perfect for filling with tiny eggs. This was super simple and would be easy enough for a young child to do with you. I used a free downloadable printable which gave me everything that I needed. Handmade Gift Box My eldest son really isn’t into chocolate (he doesn’t get this from me!), in fact he still has some of last years Easter Egg left (much to the disgust of my youngest son). So this year I decided to go in a different direction with his gift. He has recently become addicted to the card game ‘Magic the Gathering’ so I purchased some new cards for him. I then used some of the silver non shed glitter card and aquamarine pearl card to create this lovely box. This was fun, it was my favourite to make by far. I still have a lovely selection of envelopes, cards and papers to use for Easter cards and I’m looking forward to making these with my boys over the next week or two. Easter is a great time to get the kids being creative. There are lots of fun things to do from making cards to decorating eggs, making house and table decorations etc. This year the school holidays have Easter right at the end so this gives us plenty of time to get busy creating with the kids. Do you remember last month when I shared with you my ‘Mondays aren’t all bad’ Chicken Mash Pie? Well, this is the dessert that I make to go with it each week. I wouldn’t be allowed to stop this family tradition now if I tried! This dish is super flexible and you can easily substitute various ingredients if you run out of anything. I’ve used Easter egg chocolate, truffles, golden syrup etc when I’ve needed to. It’s super quick to whip up, doesn’t need baking and everyone loves it! The only real guideline for it is that in my experience make sure you eat it fresh the same day. If you keep it too long the cereal goes stale and it loses some of its awesomeness. Let’s get to it so you can jump up and create it yourself.
● 200g Milk Chocolate Chips ● 1/4 cup butter or spread ● 1/2 cup Maple Syrup ● 1 cup Peanut Butter (smooth or crunchy) ● 1 cup crisped rice cereal You could easily add extra ingredients to mix it up a bit. Perhaps some cherries or dried fruit.
1. Line a shallow tin with baking paper. I’ve used a square cake tin, a loaf tin and a flapjack tin. 2. Put the chocolate, butter, syrup and peanut butter in a large bowl and melt in the microwave on a low setting until it all combines together. Keep an eye on it so that it doesn’t go too far. 3. Once combined and looking yummy add in the crisped rice and mix well until it is all covered. 4. Spoon into the tin and place into the fridge until required. 5. Slice into individual piece and fight with your family over who gets how many. Enjoy!

The Handmade Garden April tips and jobs April has arrived and there are numerous jobs to get done in our Handmade Garden. The April showers are making the plants and weeds grow very quickly. The RHS suggest that we: ● Keep weeds under control. ● Protect fruit blossom from late frosts. ● Tie in climbing and rambling roses. ● Sow hardy annuals, herbs and wild flower seed outdoors. ● Start to feed citrus plants. ● Increase the water given to houseplants. ● Feed hungry shrubs and roses. ● Sow new lawns or repair bare patches. ● Prune fig trees ● Divide bamboos and waterlilies That little lot should keep us busy shouldn't it! I have been searching for tutorials to make your own weeding tools but they seem rather complicated so for this one let's stick to some that have been made for us.

So a few days ago I ventured into the neglected craft room. In truth it has been a waste land for stock, materials, rubbish and other oddities that just needed to be left quickly whilst I was in hospital. Craft rooms are lovely and a luxury not every crafter has and I know I’m lucky to have one. In truth I convinced my husband (I will say he didn’t wince too much in the arm lock) to part with the spare room to give me a craft room. It really became a need, during the day I am restricted upstairs and when I first started out I started with just the canvas printing which was a ‘clean’ process, so we put the printer in the spare room and run it from there. Now, although my canvas printing is popular, it’s not a constant demand and as I said during the day I’m restricted upstairs and needed to keep my hands busy. So I started playing with other crafts, like my diamante work, and hand painted glass. This in turn also helped me in several ways. I have found ways to keep my productive parts of the days busy and by also creating a mixture of crafts it created temptation for customers to come back and buy other creations allowing me to build customer relationships but also repeat trade. Now, I’m going to try and put into words how much a craft space means to me and means to craft with my conditions. If my body was fully functional, I would be able to work as I used to, I could get up in the morning, get ready, set out my crafts, work for a full day and pack away all my gear at the end of the day. Sit down with my husband have some dinner chill out and finally go to bed. My body can no longer work like that, there are days that getting up in the morning becomes a problem, so if my crafts were all packed away, just getting out everything I need could use up my productive part of the day. By having a craft room, full of a variety of accessible crafts allows me to be productive for the limited productive time I have in the day. Now on bad days I also craft from my bed (and I do), having the craft room next door again makes it easier for me to remain productive. Well, we get to a few days later and my craft room no longer looks like a tornado got loose in there. Yep I did say a couple of days; it did take me that long. Firstly I have to do things in short bursts and rest in between, but mainly I do not like to part with anything, everything may be of use one day. I mean I am often left in a situation that I throw something out, and then in the following days it turns out I could have put it to use. Anyone else? Ahh, you see it’s not just me who’s a craft hoarder. In itself this hoarding leads to storage issues, that many Knicks and Knacks need homes and those homes have to be accessible for me, and despite many requests my husband tells me we are too poor for me to have an entire crafting house (though sometimes it looks like I’m already there).

I am also a gadget freak, I don’t mean in having the latest snazzy phone or a TV bigger than my house. No, I am a gadget freak for craft tools and aids and I have become great at taking something and putting it to use for something else. You see not wanting to pack away equipment and materials has made me find ways to make this happen. I purchased from an online auction site a shop display stand that we got heavy duty breaking wheels for and this is my main working bench. It’s perfect for standing height and can just be pulled out into the room or pushed into the corner. Plus I have an ironing board, well an old one that was going to be thrown out. We removed the cover and mounted a piece on MDF to the top. Why does this excite me so? Well for me this is brilliant. If I need to stand I or sit I can easily adjust the ironing boards height to suit, it’s been one of the best gadgets for me to craft with. I also use lots of ribbon to trim my Illuminated glass blocks. Now, as I said, I don’t like packing things away for the energy spent getting things out and putting away again. But in addition I’m useless at remembering the variety of ribbon I have (I’m talking 40mm wide 20mtrs on a roll size and 20+ types), so I never thought I’d get hubby to be putting gutter up in my craft room (yes the type on the outside of your house). You know what, gutter is awesome for holding ribbon spools, much better than hanging it on dowel rods where it’s always the middle spool you need and have to take all the others off just to get to that one. So although currently I have guttering attached to my twin slot shelving, I have plans, mwahaha she laughs rubbing my hands (ok not really evil plans but I thought I’d try). I noticed that I am running out of shelf space and floor space, yet… the ceiling is under-utilised. So I have invested in a couple of bike ceiling pulleys (surprisingly low cost pulley system). One will be set up to hold dual sections of gutter that will run the length of the ceiling (just think of all that luscious ribbon it will hold). The second will go over the resting place for my workbench on wheels, and I am currently hunting for an old wooden ladder which I will overlay with a strong metal mesh. This will then give me a racking system where I can hang my ‘S’ hooks for drying crafts and my hanging mini tin planters than can hold tools, pens, brushes and other crafting tools freeing up much needed space from shelves and of course creating more space for new items. Oh, and shhh, please don’t tell the hubby. So Crafters out there, are you hoarders? Do you have your own gadgets? And for those that know crafters, do we seem insane to you?

Happy Spring! My aim with my newest shawl design was to create a pattern that was an easy, relaxing, and fun knit - so I'm calling it simply " ." This triangular shawl is a generous size (57x32"/ 145x81cm after blocking) that's perfect for spring and for summer evenings. The yarns I used are from an indie dyer in Scotland - but you certainly can use your favorite fingering weight yarn. The pattern alternates stockinette stitch sections with garter eyelet sections - and alternates colorways - providing textures and stripes. Hi There, I'm Lucy from Treasured Buttons and I thought I would share my latest creation with you. I love to have a go at a variety of crafts and projects but particularly enjoy using my sewing machine to create. Here is a project that I have had on my list for quite a while now and have finally been able to find time to complete! With the recent warm weather over the Easter period, I have taken great pleasure in being able to hang my washing on the line to dry – is this a sign of age?! For several summers now I have got the same old peg bag out, hung it on the line and thought that I must replace it before the season is out and yet here we are! I have had a pattern for a simple peg bag waiting in the wings for some time now so the next job was to find some fabric, of which I needed two contrasting pieces. I have a small hoard of fabric pieces waiting to be used so was hopeful that I would be able to find something that would be suitable without having to buy anymore. As I progress in my crafting journey, I find that I am increasingly interested in re-using resources and materials. While this obviously has a financial benefit, I also don't like the idea of throwing anything away if it has the potential to be put to good use. In light of this, the floral fabric that I chose was once left over from that used by my mum to make a summer top and the yellow fabric was from a pair of curtains – recycling at its best! The pattern that I had chosen was simple to follow and once I had created the paper templates to use, I was able to cut the fabric – my favourite part of any fabric project. While I have made several pieces requiring me to follow a pattern, I still see myself as a bit of a novice and until now hadn't made anything which was lined. Once I had cut all the required pieces of fabric, I have to admit that it did take some working out how to position the fabric for sewing – particularly with two boisterous boys running around! For me this just adds to my sense of achievement in completing a successful project, knowing that it has made me think about what I am doing and learn more skills. Having made the final stitch, I took great pleasure in turning the fabric out the right way and revealing the final piece. I am really pleased with how my peg bag turned out and promptly filled it with my clothes pegs, gladly getting rid of my old tatty one. I will happily be hanging my washing out on the line in the coming months – surely this is a sign of age! Hope to see you all soon, www.treasuredbuttons.co.uk
