Courses

The Course Catalog provides descriptions of the courses being offered. Courses and descriptions are subject to change. Courses are sorted as Core classes which require a book and assignments, and Electives with minimal homework, if any. Each class identifies which grades should enroll in this class, the amount of rigor required for that class, and the state standard it satisfies. Please note some electives are offered by semester only, you may choose according to fall semester, spring semester, or both.

Coaches and Parents partner together for the benefit of the student. Using a syllabus, parents and coaches pace together through the core classes with hands-on instructions, guest speakers, creative outlets and the Socratic learning model. Textbook purchase is required for some core courses

New Families

New families wishing to enroll in Creative Academy must first submit an electronic New Family Application. Applications are found on the Academy website under the current year's enrollment tab. Once an application is processed and accepted, and enrollment packet will be emailed to the parent/guardian to complete

Re-Enrollment

Current accepted families will be provided with the information necessary to complete the enrollment process each year, typically in late spring/early summer Families may complete the enrollment process through the summer. However, space is limited and classes do fill up. Families are encouraged to complete the enrollment process as soon as possible to have a better chance of getting into the courses they prefer.

Students enroll for the entire school year. For students who want different classes for the Spring Semester, parents will have the opportunity to submit a Spring Semester Change Request Form during the semester break. Enol Her! →

Kindergarten

Kindergarten Teams (K-Teams)

Kindergarteners join a K-team to build community on both Tuesdays and Thursdays 10:00am-12:00pm with a consistent instructor and students. Activities include Bible, Prayer, Phonics, Math, Handwriting, Music, Storytimes, Art, and other fun educational activities. Strengthen the basics while also building confidence and a love for learning!

Kindergarten students are also welcome to attend chapel from 9:30-10:00am and lunch from 12-12:30pm (packed from home).

After lunch, Kindergarteners may enroll in additional classes with K-2nd grade students. Parents of Kindergarteners are expected to be involved as Parent Partners at least 2-3 hrs per month with your student at Creative Academy. Students excel when parents are involved!

Letters and Numbers:

This covers all of your subjects and takes you through a Preschool/Kindergarten level in content for math, science, social studies, and language arts.

Language Arts & Phonics: Uppercase, lowercase, and sounds A-M (fall semester) N-Z (spring semester), writing a letter, storytelling, making lists, etc.

Fine Motor Skills: Students will work with scissors and different art supplies to increase coordination and fine motor skills.

Art: A wide variety of artistic exploration with drawing, painting, clay, creating crafts, and much more.

Math: Numbers and counting 0-10 (fall semester) 11-20 (spring semester), shapes, colors, patterns, number sequencing, opposites, and counting by groups will be incorporated to cover basic math concepts.

Science: A number of science units will be covered through interactive learning.

Social Studies: Topics may include homes, jobs in our community, world map and geography, emotions, weather, and more.

Bible: Students will go through the major Bible stories, taught in a creative, and age-appropriate way.

PLUS: Scripture memorization, character building, narration, discussion, pre-writing concepts, life skills, and lots of creative fun!

Language Arts Courses

Lightning Literature (Tues & Thurs Yearlong)

Rigor: Light - High Standard Satisfied: English

Lightning Literature is a language arts curriculum designed to:

● instill a love of literature in students,

● expand their ability to read intelligently and deeply, and

● prepare them for more advanced language arts concepts.

The key components of this series are literature, grammar and mechanics, and composition. This course will also include spelling and proper annunciation techniques.

Curriculum will need to be purchased for this course. Please see Curriculum page 26 for further details. For additional required reading, you may choose to purchase, borrow from the library, or find digital versions. Books will be part of the syllabus and communicated by the coach as needed.

Each year the language arts courses will be offered for ninth-twelfth grade students that satisfy the state standards for graduation (found on page 24). During their high school career, students will choose one English credit per year until all required standards are met. The below courses will be offered in the following yearly rotation.

Abeka Arithmetic 1 (Tues & Thurs Yearlong)

Arithmetic 3 is all about the mastery of multiplication and division that your child will get through story problems, measurement conversions, fractions, and more. With new materials boxed on top of the page and issues given directly below, your child can easily look back at the study notes as he works through his problems. Brain boosters are also included four times a week to challenge students to apply the concepts learned. With additional topics including rounding and estimation, perimeter and area, graphs, and geometric figures, prepare your child for the higher math that he will learn in the future. All of this is presented in four fun themes - nocturnal animals, travel in the U.S., zoos around the world, and space exploration. Learning math can be challenging and fun at the same time with Abeka Arithmetic 3.

Math 7 covers all of the basic arithmetic, including fractions, decimals, and percents. The program also teaches a fair amount of geometry (e.g. how to find the area of a circle). Other topics include statistics and probability, simple graphing concepts, equations, and inequalities. There are even several chapters dedicated to math in the real world.

Pre-Algebra I

Topics covered in this fully comprehensive Pre-Algebra course include:

• adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing with whole numbers

Algebra II

This course requires a graphing calculator. Either the TI-83+ or TI-84+ by Texas Instruments or any calculator with the same functions will work.

Consumer Math 9th-12th (Tues & Thurs Yearlong)

Consumer Math for Real Life is a high school math curriculum that contains 116 lessons and fulfills an entire math credit while teaching skills your student will use in the real world. From creating a budget to writing a business plan to planning and calculating the cost of flooring a room, this course teaches math from a practical perspective. By the end of this course, your student will:

● understand saving and investing

● learn what costs are associated with life

● know how to apply critical thinking to the real-life problems they encounter

● understand the basics of income, taxes, and employee benefits

● explore career or academic options for their life after high school

Most importantly, they will learn that biblical wisdom is the solid foundation on which they can make every decision.

Social Studies: History

US History 1st-2nd, 3rd-5th, 6th-8th, 9th-12th (Yearlong)

This course moves chronologically through time to teach US History from a Christian worldview. There are six parts to this US History course.

The Fall Semester covers:

● A New World (beginning-1763)

● Rise to Independence (Mid 1700s- the War of 1812)

● Growing Identity (1816-1899)

The Spring Semester picks up where the Fall semester left off with:

● War and Reformation of the United States (1898-1945)

● A New Era (19-46-1975)

● History of Tomorrow (1970-present day)

Students will walk away with an in-depth understanding of the Christian foundations of our country as well as an appreciation for the men and women who have created, fought for, protected, and discovered the land we live in.

$50 per semester curriculum fee (3 workbooks per semester)

Portraits of American Girlhood 3rd-5th (Semester Class Fall & Spring)

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a pioneer girl growing up on the prairie? Maybe you have dreamed what life would be like in the city growing up during the Victorian era? What was school like back then? Friendships? Food? Travel? Holidays? What was day-to-day life like back then for a girl just like you?

This semester, we will read various historical fiction that follows different heroines as they face the challenges and adventures of growing up during their distinct historical era.

Come along, as we study each time-period and incorporate academic subjects through the lens of the time-period: Social Studies, Science, Geography, Language Arts, Biography, Journalism, Handiwork, and Godly Character. Beyond the academic subjects, we will have FUN and CREATE crafts of bygone years! We will learn, grow, connect, create, make memories, and have fun!

The Pioneer Days and Victorian Era were pivotal times in American History as well as the history of Minnesota and the Twin Cities!

Human Body 1st-2nd, 3rd-5th, 6th-8th, 9th-12th (Fall Semester)

The human body is a technical/science unit that is perfect for the budding anatomist in your house. Students will be learning about human anatomy and various systems in the body including: nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and more! It will leave students in awe of their Creator and the intricacies that make up each system in our body.

Intro to Psychology 6th-8th, 9th-12th (Spring Semester)

Take every thought captive. How do you actually do that? Students will learn about their thoughts, feelings, emotions, reactions, behaviors, personalities, and so much more. They will discover where these come from, what is true, and how to manage them from a Biblical perspective. Intro to Psychology is so much more than how the brain works. It will give students strategies and tools on how to take ownership of why and how they act the way they do and begin to be intentional in their relationships.

Rocks and Minerals 1st-2nd, 3rd-5th (Spring Semester)

Rigor: Light

Students will be learning all about how rocks and minerals are formed, what they look like, where they are found, why they are important, and so much more! By the end of the unit, students will be able to identify rocks right in their own backyard! So grab your gloves, safety goggles, and rock hammer, and let’s go rockhounding!

Each lesson begins with a few review questions from the class before to help students remember everything they’re learning. Then dig even deeper into your student books with daily science, history, and Bible pages. Students will perform experiments such as growing their own crystals, lighting a bulb using conduction, observing the process of oxidation, building a bone model, and so much more! Students also be learning about some historical rocks and minerals from around the world, such as Plymouth Rock, Stonehenge, and an underground cave of giant crystals.

Faith Course:

While the foundations of the Bible are thematic in all our courses, our Faith Course is a Core mission of Creative Academy. This course is essential in aiding our students while they learn how to be Salt and Light (Matthew 5: 13-16) alongside friends in a supportive and encouraging environment. We highly recommend every student take this course.

Personal Faith: Explaining the Scriptures 6th-8th, 9th-12th (Yearlong)

Rigor: Light- Medium

Standard Satisfied: Elective-Bible

The word Bible is derived from the Greek word biblios, which means set of books. It is divided into two parts: OLD and NEW TESTAMENT, a division that remembers the old and new covenant of God that was established with man. Nearly 40 writers participated in the compilation of the 66 books that make up the Holy Bible. The writers lived far from each other, in different countries, times, and conditions. They did not know each other and belonged to the most varied social strata having very different cultures and professions. The authors were of varied occupations: writers, statesmen, peasants, kings, fishermen, tax collectors, educated and ignorant, Jews and Gentiles. Yet all wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

This class will take a deep dive into God’s Word. In this study, you will find detailed summaries of the 66 books of the Bible. The central point of the Bible is Jesus (birth, death, and resurrection). In each of the books, students will study:

AUTHOR: Who wrote the book, according to the information contained in the Bible itself or according to historical tradition.

DATE: when the book was written or what was happening in history during this time period.

SUMMARY: An overview of the events of each book and how it reflects the Gospel message and character of God.

Students will learn how very worthwhile it is to know their Bible thoroughly This class will begin a journey of discovery that will truly change their lives. Through this class, they will grow in grace, knowledge, and faith.

Personal Faith: Heroes/Heroines of the Bible 2.0 K-2nd, 3rd-5th (Fall Semester)

This class is dedicated to remarkable men and women whose stories stand out to encourage and challenge our own faith. They lived incredible lives and trusted God, because of this, they are often called the HEROES OF FAITH. There are quite a few people who make it into this “Hall of Faith.” This class is a continuation of last year and is filled with new and exciting characters.

In Bible Skills, students will learn foundations in the faith such as how to read God's word and use a concordance. This class is sure to provide a strong foundation of the inspired Word of God!

Art K-2nd, 3rd-5th, 6th-8th, 9th-12th (Semester class Fall & Spring)

God is a brilliant Creator! In this class, we will tap into our creative abilities. Students will explore the world of art as we cover styles of art and let students express themselves. Students will learn about different artists throughout history as well as different mediums and techniques to grow in their artistic abilities.

Faith Builders (Legos) K-2nd, 3rd-5th (Semester class Fall & Spring)

A fun, interactive, hands-on experience in learning about faith, God, and the Bible that kids will love. If you like building with Lego bricks and you love learning about the truths found in God's Word, then Faith Builders is definitely for you! Engage in foundational lessons of faith found in the Bible, each lesson has brick-building projects to reinforce the lesson and picture tutorials on how to build them. There will also be group projects as the class works their way through building a large replica of a biblical story for the showcase.

Food & Nutrition K-2nd, 3rd-6th (Semester Class Fall & Spring)

Food is a gift from God! Find joy in preparing it, celebration in eating it, and personal outreach by blessing other people as you share! This class aims to introduce new foods and flavors, practicing kitchen safety as we try various recipes to learn different techniques and nutritional benefits. We’ll explore how to plan, prepare, and present various types of food. God created us to crave, and our cravings impact our overall health.

How to Cook 6th-12th (Semester Class Fall & Spring)

This class aims to introduce new foods and flavors, practicing kitchen safety as we try various recipes to learn different techniques and nutritional benefits. We’ll explore how to plan, prepare, and present various types of food. Students will have the opportunity to both prepare and enjoy eating new recipes each class.

Math Games K-2nd (Semester class Fall & Spring)

Rigor: Light-Medium

First and foremost, math games are fun learning! With Math Games, students engage in calculation and computation without even realizing they are actually learning! The games are offered in both team and individual formats, giving a little friendly competition to motivate intrinsic learning. The level of math used in these games will vary by grade/age. The goal of the class is to foster a love for learning math, allowing children who may have been intimidated by math to conquer that fear and blast through their “math barriers.”

Electives: Music & Performing Arts

Choir 2nd-5th (Semester class Fall & Spring)

Standard Satisfied: Elective

Youth Choir is designed to teach students how to sing comfortably in a group setting and learn to work together with a wide variety of ages and abilities. Students will learn vocal techniques, proper care of vocal chords, and using their voice in worship. Students may audition for solo or duet pieces. Students may perform their choir selections in the Showcase each semester.

Dance K-2nd, 3rd-5th, 6th-12th (Semester class Fall & Spring)

This is an introduction to various types of dance, all from a Christian perspective. There will be extra focus on lyrical and musical theater dance with preparation for performing on stage. Students will learn various ways to move to music and express their love for God with their whole being! Each semester students will perform a routine during the showcase.

Music Appreciation: Still Singing-Hymn Stories for Every Season 3rd-5th, 6th-8th, 9-12th (Yearlong)

Still Singing is a class focused on hymns people have been using for hundreds of years to help them focus on God's truth and trust Him in the hardest moments. Learn why these hymns are treasures of the Christian faith and how they can inspire hope and trust in God and His faithfulness. Students will also learn basic music theory and get hands-on experience with their own recorders.

Intro to Ukulele 3rd-5th (Semester class Fall & Spring)

Students will receive small group lessons in learning the foundations of the Ukulele. The class will cover an introduction to music and learning how to play songs on their instruments. After learning the basics of the Ukulele, students can easily progress to guitar in the future. Each student will need to provide their own instrument.

$100 fee per semester

Intro to Guitar 6th-8th, 9th-12th (Semester class Fall & Spring)

Students will receive small group lessons on learning the foundations of the Guitar. The class will cover an introduction to music and learning how to play songs on their instruments. This is a class for students new to guitar and each student will need to bring their own instrument to class each week.

$100 fee per semester

Intro to Drums 6th-12th (Semester class Fall & Spring)

Students will receive small group lessons on learning the foundations of the Drums including the drum kit. The class will cover an introduction to music and learning how to play songs on their instruments, specifically in worship. This is a class for students new to drums and each student will be learning on a practice kit each week at Academy.

$100 fee per semester

Songwriting 6th-8th, 9th-12th (Yearlong)

Do you know the process of writing and producing music? By the end of this class, you will! This class will introduce elements of production with an emphasis on songwriting and composition. Students will learn the creative process from writing lyrics, composing music, and producing their own worship songs to honor their Creator

Worship Team 6th-12th (Semester class Fall & Spring) *Audition Required

This is intended to help train up the next generation of musicians and worship leaders in the church and community. Students in this class will gain an understanding of the basics of worship leading, including song selection, audience engagement, and verbal communication. Students will have opportunities to lead the worship segments of Creative Academy chapel using contemporary worship music. No book is required, but musicians must be proficient in their instruments, and vocalists must be able to hear harmonies and demonstrate the heart of worship in a live setting. This class takes place before Chapel and is additional to the normal 10-course standard.

Production Team 7th-12th (Semester class Fall & Spring)

The goal of the Production Team Course is to help students get familiar with the world of live production (consisting of audio, lights, and video) enough to confidently bring production value to most church services. Most of the training would be taught in the context of Creative Church.

- Basic tech equipment operations.

- Basic tech equipment programming.

- Terminology

- Understanding the value and importance of the production team in a Church setting.

- Maintaining and servicing equipment.

Students will also operate the equipment during Creative Academy Chapel under the instructor’s supervision. This class takes place before Chapel and is additional to the normal 10-course standard.

Unsolved Mysteries 1st-2nd, 3rd-5th, 6th-12th (Fall Semester)

Welcome to Unsolved Mysteries! Explore life's greatest enigmas with us in this unique approach to critical thinking. We'll be looking at the Lost Colony of Roanoke, Atlantis, the Loch Ness Monster, the Ark of the Covenant, Stonehenge, Amelia Earhart, and so much more!

Students will also explore the many questions, theories, and opinions that surround the book of Revelation and unravel its visions and pictures, discovering amazing truths and promises. Verse by verse, we will explore various interpretations of symbols, and leave room for your family to discuss and come to your own conclusions.

We also are excited to include forensic science as students see what it takes to become a detective and analyze the clues left on the scene! Learn the crime-solving process, from preserving a crime scene to solving the crime, including gathering fingerprints, collecting and testing DNA, and interviewing witnesses and suspects.

May this unit spark wonder, awe, and curiosity, pointing back to the Creator This is sure to be an unforgettable adventure!

This class is jam-packed with hands-on activities and interactive experiences that allow students to respond to the content as they learn it. In our Careers + Trades class, students will learn about various industries and jobs with a focus on ethics, character, and identity. Students will learn about interviewing, filling out forms and applications, and how to write their own resume. There are multiple personality assessments and students are encouraged to learn more about who God has made them to be and how they can develop their skills and interests to help lead them towards a good fit. We do not focus heavily on the university being the only way to a career, and instead talk about how a career can be many things to different people (we even talk about the lifelong commitment of being a stay-at-home parent or homeschool parent). This class is rich in deep discussions and seeped in God's Word. Come take a journey with us to learn about just a few of the many opportunities that stand before your children and speak life over who God made them to be.

Class time will be spent participating in a variety of both team and individual activities, so be prepared to be active, have fun, and learn new skills! While we don’t expect students to be athletes, we do ask that they exhibit effort!

Creative Play & Movement K-2 (Semester class Fall & Spring)

Students will be introduced to movement concepts and skills that will help them achieve and maintain health and fitness throughout their lifetime. This class is meant for beginners and will help students learn creative movement with shorter bursts of activities, an understanding of personal space and coordination, and an introduction to cooperative play. Students will have a lot of fun while learning and expending energy!

Chapel: Free for all Tuesdays & Thursdays 9:30-10:00am

The chapel experience is a time for all students, K-12, to come together in the community to be equipped and encouraged as leaders of the next generation. The chapel worship is led by Creative Academy students under the direction of the Worship Team instructor. The message is brought by local pastors, church staff, Academy staff, and parents. This class is free of charge and strongly encouraged. No textbook or additional materials are required. We will focus on Character traits and have small group times of discussion.

PSEO Courses

In partnership with local Universities 11th-12th (Yearlong)

Rigor: High

Standard Satisfied: College Credit

Students in their junior and senior year of High School are eligible to take up to 2 years of college credit (with the potential of earning an associate's degree). Creative Academy partners with local universities, which is the largest provider of online dual enrollment courses among private colleges and universities in the state of Minnesota. They offer more than 60 online courses in semester-length formats, including options for collaboratively-based learning and at-your-own-pace learning.

By participating in the PSEO morning block at Creative Academy, students can still receive support, community, and guidance as they transition from High School to College expectations. Students will also have the opportunity to enroll in afternoon classes at the Academy to complete their High School experience.

MN Department of Education Graduation Requirements:

In Minnesota, students are required to complete two kinds of requirements by the time they graduate. For students who are in 9th for the 24-25 school year, Students must:

• Satisfactorily complete all state academic standards or local academic standards where state standards do not apply.

• Satisfactorily complete the state course credit requirements under Minnesota Statutes, section 120B.024.

Students must complete a minimum of 21.5 course credits as follows:

• 4 credits of language arts

• 3 credits of mathematics, encompassing Algebra II, Integrated Mathematics III, or an equivalent in high school as defined by the high school math standards. Grade 8 students must complete Algebra as defined by the Minnesota Math Standards. Students who begin grade 9 in the 2024-25 school year and later must successfully complete a course for credit in personal finance in grades 10, 11, or 12.

• 3 credits of science, including at least one credit of biology/life science, one credit of chemistry or physics, and one elective credit of earth and space science

• 3½ credits of social studies, including United States history, geography, government and citizenship, world history, and economics.

• 1 credit in the arts

• 7 elective credits

• Physical Education, credit is determined at the local level Must meet state standards requirements.

• Health Education, credit is determined at the local level. Must meet locally developed standard requirements.

Although the Tuesday & Thursday schedule times are the same, the classes are different with 5 on Tuesday and 5 different classes on Thursday (except Math and Language Arts that is taught on both days) for a total of 10 courses.

Each semester concludes with a showcase. Parents, friends, and families are invited to the showcase to see performances from our students. Additionally, the lobby area is filled with projects from our students that have been created throughout the semester. It's a great night for everyone as we celebrate our students!
