Hello and welcome to your September edition of Our Goole.
School’s back! We managed a good few days of lovely hot weather, and we hope whatever you had planned for the summer went brilliantly.
Here at Our Goole we have been working hard to bring you the best business deals and feel-good stories.
This month, we catch up with Marcie Reid, 30 from Goole, who was crowned Miss York 2025 back in April. She is currently set to be the first ever care experienced person to reach the Miss Great Britain finals in its 80-year history!
We also showcase A Shining Light, a school-based charity from Howden Secondary School, designed to raise awareness of cancer in young people, as well as making young people more health aware both physically and mentally.
Our lovely front page image was taken by the very talented Jackie Halliday.
As always, our friendly team is just an email or phone call away to help you with all your advertisement needs and answer any questions you may have.
We will see you again in October, but for now sit back with a cuppa and enjoy your latest instalment of Our Goole.

Marcie Reid, 30, Goole, was crowned Miss York 2025 in April. She is currently set to be the first ever care experienced person to reach the Miss Great Britain finals in its 80-year history!
By day, Marcie works full-time for a National Children’s Charity - Action for Children, helping children with similar backgrounds to hers.
Marcie told Our Goole: “It’s my dream job and something I pour my heart and soul into. When I’m not working I’m animal obsessed, and you’ll always find me participating in some sort of volunteering or fundraising. I firmly believe in giving back to your local community and supporting those around you. Most recently, I completed 15 Race for Life events to fundraise for Cancer Research UK and I have an abseil and fire walk lined up in the next couple of months.
“As someone who grew up in the care system, confidence was never something that came naturally to me. I didn’t spend my childhood dreaming of amazing things, I was too focused on surviving the day and getting through to tomorrow.
“As I grew up, I wanted to make up for ‘lost time’ as such, I wanted to throw myself into situations I never would have dreamed of, I wanted to thrive. I never realised beauty pageants were in the UK until a friend of mine entered one.
“It took a few years of working up the courage, and a lot of encouragement from my loved ones before I took the plunge and decided to apply for my first ever pageant. I figured that the worst that could happen was a no. Well, it turned out to be a yes!
“Since then, pageantry has led me to make friends all around the world, experience once-in-a-lifetime adventures such as travelling to the Philippines
and co-founding a charity in Ghana. The skills that Pageantry has taught me has been amazing, such as public speaking, interview skills, confidence, stage presence… I could go on forever, I’ve gained so much.
“The Miss York competition involved lots of different aspects including questionnaires, essays, application forms, interviews etc. Miss Great Britain is the most inclusive pageant in the world, where size, height, weight, age doesn’t matter.
“Miss Great Britain is focussed on platforms and change making, as opposed to the outdated view of parading around in a swimsuit.
“It’s one of the oldest pageants in the world and will be celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. The finals are held over two days in October and the rounds include private interviews, onstage questions, fashion wear, swimwear and glamourous evening wear. Contestants are judged on confidence and stage presence rather than looks.
“Miss Great Britain takes pride in crowning queens with substance who are positive forces for good.
“I’m focused on earning the Miss Great Britain crown. I truly believe that being the first ever care leaver to win the coveted crown could really open doors and conversations around the care system within the UK, and allow others with similar experience to realise that they too deserve all good things and that their past does not define them! After October, whether I win or lose I will continue with my charity work putting my best into everything I do.”

This month, Goole policing team educates us on how policing teams work and how every neighbourhood has a team of officers dedicated to keeping you safe and supporting your community
These teams include Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) Police Constables, Sergeants and Inspectors, who all work together to help resolve local concerns and build relationships with residents.
do Neighbourhood Policing Teams do?
These teams specialise in solving community problems at a local level by working in collaboration with other agencies, and understanding the root cause of these problems. They are not the officers you would typically see responding to a 999 emergency, they run their own investigations and conduct warrants to target offenders causing harm and engage with the community.
Neighbourhood officers are assigned to specific areas so they can really get to know the community they serve.
Teams also utilise a system called Vision On where known wanted individuals’ images are circulated internally to ensure that should they see wanted people on their beat, they are identified correctly and apprehended.
Each neighbourhood station is assigned a section of force area which is subsequently divided again into ‘wards’. Wards are assigned to specific teams of officers, these teams complete too many tasks to list.
Teams work closely with local authorities, organisations, partners and residents to decide policing priorities. This helps teams find long-term solutions to local problems.
All the information regarding which area you live in and who your local neighbourhood officers are can be found online.
Keep an eye on our website, and social media accounts for more on what we’re getting up to, and sign up to My Community Alert to find out what’s happening on your street.

A Shining Light is a school-based charity from Howden Secondary School, designed to raise awareness of cancer in young people, as well as making young people more health aware both physically and mentally
A Shining Light also provides meaningful volunteering experiences for school-aged children.
The charity was formed in July 2022 following the loss of Luke Stevens who was a student at Howden and passed away in 2021 after a battle with bone cancer.
Ryan Gardiner, founder of A Shining Light, told Our Goole: “As someone who had taught Luke
for five years, I decided to start this charity in his memory, and with the blessing of his parents, Chris and Joanne, we have raised over £110,000 in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust in the last three years.
“I struggled with his passing and starting the charity gave me the chance to reframe how I felt about the situation and put that energy to better use. I plan and organise the events, I run the website and social media pages, I recruit the volunteers etc. Of course,
I consult Luke’s parents on plans, but ultimately it’s myself running it voluntarily alongside working full-time.
“All our funds are spent exclusively in Yorkshire at either Hull or Leeds to further improve their Teenage Cancer Trust units, meaning any young person diagnosed in Yorkshire would benefit from the money we raise.
“These improvements can be anything from buying the patients new PlayStation games to funding a weekend trip for them with the supervision of a nurse
“We’ve ran table top sales, bingo nights, football tournaments, golf days and more. Still to come this year we have a tennis tournament, summer gala, comedy night and more. We like to vary what we do, but the aim is always to get the community together, have fun and raise awareness at the same time.
“On Sunday 21st September we have a tennis tournament at Goole Tennis Centre, entry £10 per player. Places are capped at 48 entries.
“Players will be randomly drawn into a four-player team format consisting of two doubles pairings and will play seven rounds before a play-off format to finish. Light refreshments are also included and trophies and medals will be presented to the winning team.
“Our comedy night is on Thursday 9th October at the Howden Social Club, tickets
£20 each.
“This is the second year of running this event. Last years was a sell-out success raising over £2,500. We are hoping for the same this year.
“The comics give up their evening free of charge which is amazing and so far this year we have confirmed: Micky P Kerr - a successful comedian and author who shot to fame in the finals of Britain’s Got Talent in 2018. He’s a Yorkshire local after spending most of his life in Leeds.
“Alun Cochrane is returning to host the show having done so last year - Alun has appeared on 8 out of 10 Cats, Live at the Apollo, QI and more. Alun is a household name on the UK comedy circuit and is also the former co-host of the Frank Skinner show on Absolute Radio.
“We are still in discussions with a couple of acts with a least one more to be announced. Tickets will be available via the charity website. Doors open at 7pm with the show due to start at 7.30pm.
“Our aim for 2025 was to raise £21,000, as Luke would have been turning 21 this year. So far we have just under £18,000. Longer term, we would like to establish some sports clubs in the area that are inclusive and low-cost. Luke was a huge sports fan, so it would be nice to have a local legacy of activities that would benefit people just like him.”

This month, local property expert David Leake from The Property Experts talks to us about first-time buyer
First-time buyers are already being boosted by lower mortgage repayments, research suggests.
Analysis by Rightmove ahead of the Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee’s latest interest rate decision shows a typical first-time buyer’s monthly mortgage payment is almost £100 (-£93) lower than at this time last year.
The average first-time buyer mortgage payment is currently £909 per month, versus £1,002 per month last year, the portal suggests.
The analysis is based on the typical first-time buyer property sector of homes with two bedrooms or less, and and a deposit size of 20%, with mortgage costs spread over 30 years.
Mortgage rates have been slowly trending downwards this year. The average two-year fixed mortgage rate for someone with a 20% deposit has lowered from 5.21% at this time last year, to 4.38% now.
Over the same period, the average five-year fixed mortgage rate for someone with a 20% deposit has lowered from 4.91% to 4.52%. As mortgage rates have come down, average first-time buyer property prices have remained flat and average wages have increased – combining to slowly improve buyer affordability. The base rate was cut again by 0.25% on Thursday 7th August to 4%.
