INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the February edition of Our Goole!

Well January is now over, and for many, it can be a hard month. But February is now here, the month of love, and those lighter nights are just around the corner.

We have plenty of offers from local businesses in our area as well as a selection of feel-good stories from the community.

This month we speak to Wade Joinery & Construction after they were approached to appear on BBC One’s DIY SOS.

We also promote this year’s Open Art exhibition at Goole Museum which has a special bicentenary theme, alongside

a wonderful array of artwork across different styles and mediums.

Lastly, we sit down with Pippa, the reigning Miss Voluptuous Great Britain, to uncover the powerful story behind her latest project: The Period Pantry.

Our front cover image was taken by the very talented Mike Smith.

As always, if you would like your business to be featured in the magazine or have a story to submit, please get in touch with a member of our fantastic team who will be happy to help.

For now sit back with a cuppa and enjoy your latest edition of Our Goole, we will see you again in March!

Expert craftsmanship recognised by BBC One’s DIY SOS Wade

Joinery & Construction

Wade Joinery & Construction were approached by BBC One’s DIY SOS - the programme looks for reliable, skilled tradespeople who are willing to donate their time and expertise for an important cause

Wade Joinery & Construction is a family-run building and joinery business specialising in bespoke joinery, renovations, extensions, and full building projects.

They pride themselves on high-quality craftsmanship, attention to detail, and a hands-on, honest approach to every job, whether it’s a small custom piece or a full-scale build.

The firm is owned by Chris Wade, a skilled joiner and builder with years of experience in the construction industry and Shona Wade with years of experience in business management.

Shona told Our Goole: “Being invited to take part in DIY SOS was an honour and something we didn’t hesitate in saying yes to.

“For us, it was about giving back, supporting a community, and being part of a project that stands for kindness, community, and compassion, rather than promotion alone.

“It involved long days, tight deadlines, and working alongside a large team of trades to transform a

grass field into an amazing building and space for the CherryTree Youth Hub. Everything had to be completed to an exceptionally high standard within a very short timeframe, which required teamwork, flexibility, and commitment. Most days were approximately 18 hours including travel time.

“Featuring on the programme raised awareness for our business, strengthened our reputation, and highlighted our commitment to both quality craftsmanship and community support. It strengthened our professional network within the construction industry, from suppliers to specialist contractors. Being part of DIY SOS connected us with people who genuinely care about community impact, not just business profit.”

The episode featuring Wade Joinery & Contruction was aired on the 30th December on BBC One and is also available on BBC iPlayer.

FROM A POLICE PERSPECTIVE:

Positive partnership action to tackle ASB in Goole

This month, Goole Policing Team talks to us about how their local Neighbourhood Policing teams work together with local authorities, support agencies and charities to help make the community safer for those who live, work, and visit it too

Together with East Riding Council’s ASB and Homeless Teams, local counsellors, and local businesses, PCSOs and Beat Officers who cover the area have been conducting a whole host of proactive work to put meaningful problem-solving plans in place. This will deter individuals away from crime, signpost to specialist support, and ultimately take action after listening to concerns raised by local residents, businesses and visitors to the area.

What concerns were raised by the community?

Concerns were raised around a group of people believed to be street drinking which was beginning to cause harassment, alarm and distress to businesses and shoppers in the area. What did you do to tackle it?

We started by identifying hotspots where the crime

and anti-social behaviour appeared to be stemming from and conducted additional high-visibility patrols in the area, engaging with those suspected to be involved, enforcing Public Space Protection Orders, and where necessary, issuing dispersal orders.

What was the outcome?

We have seen a reduction in complaints and reports from local residents and businesses. The dispersal orders, behaviour orders and community protection notices have also been effective in disrupting crime and ASB.

We would encourage you to continue reporting and engaging with the teams when you see them out and about. You can also report online or via our non-emergency number 101 but always call 999 in an emergency or if a crime is ongoing.

Bicentenary Open Art at Goole Museum

This year’s Open Art exhibition at Goole Museum has a special bicentenary theme, alongside a wonderful array of artwork across different styles and mediums, and they also have a special showing of art that has been inspired by Goole’s 200 years of history

This year marks 200 years since Goole was constructed as a purpose-built port town in 1826, and to celebrate you can see artwork relating to different aspect of the town’s culture and heritage.

Goole Museum explores the social history of Goole and its people, covering the origins and growth of the port as well as everyday lives.

Visitors can experience the life, love and loss of the people and their industrial heritage at this community museum. From shipbuilders’ models and ship paintings to domestic life and leisure pursuits, the museum has a large collection of objects and stories on display. The museum also hosts four temporary exhibitions per year, which cover subjects including social history, art and archaeology.

Goole Museum’s Bicentenary Open Art 2026 offers local artists an opportunity to have their artwork publicly displayed in an art gallery.

Entrants’ artwork will be considered by a panel of expert selectors, who will choose the best pieces of work for the Open Art Exhibition.

Staff at Goole Museum have been making preparations for Goole’s Bicentenary year celebrations for many months. It is a wonderful opportunity for the museum to help the people of Goole celebrate their history, and to encourage a sense of rootedness and pride in the town.

The drop-off dates for artwork to the museum are: 3rd–7th March and 10th–14th March.

To enter, artists can download the entry form at www.eastridingmuseums.co.uk/whats-on/

Pick up an entry form from the museum: Carlisle Street, Goole, DN14 5DS. Call on 01405 768963 or email: goole.museum@ eastriding.gov.uk.

End the stigma, stop the shaming: The Period Pantry

Our Goole sits down with Pippa, the reigning Miss Voluptuous Great Britain, to uncover the powerful story behind her latest project: The Period Pantry. This bold community initiative is taking a stand against period poverty, breaking down barriers, and ensuring everyone has access to essential hygiene products

What is the Period Pantry Project?

“The Period Pantry Project is a community initiative created by myself, Pippa, Miss Voluptous Great Britain, to combat period poverty and improve access to essential hygiene products. The project began with the placement of a free, openly accessible Period Pantry Box at The Moorlands Community Centre in Old Goole.

“Each box is personally funded, stocked, maintained, and cared for by me, ensuring that anyone who needs support can access essential items without judgment, barriers, or questions asked.

“Beyond period products, the pantry also includes everyday hygiene essentials such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, and other necessary items, recognising that personal care is a fundamental part of dignity and wellbeing.”

Why is this important to you?

“Period poverty remains a hidden issue that impacts physical health, mental wellbeing, confidence, and participation in daily life.

“Many people in our community face financial hardship, poverty, unexpected circumstances, or moments where essential products are simply not affordable or accessible.

“This project provides immediate, practical support while also creating a safe and compassionate resource that reduces stigma around menstruation and personal hygiene. By placing the pantry within a trusted community space, it helps normalise asking for help and ensures people know they are not alone or forgotten.

How can the local community help with your project?

“Local residents, businesses, and organisations

shaming: Pantry

can support the Period Pantry Project in several ways:

• Donating period and hygiene products

• Hosting a pantry box in a communityaccessible location

• Helping spread the importance through word of mouth and social media

• Partnering with the project to extend its reach across Goole and surrounding areas

• Community involvement is vital to sustaining and growing the project into a reliable network of support.

Where are your current box locations?

“At present, the project includes three active Period Pantry boxes located at:

• The Moorlands Community Centre, Old Goole

• Ronnie’s Signature Moments, Goole

• Mollies Party Paradise, Goole

Expansion is a core aim for the project. I am actively seeking additional establishments across Goole and nearby areas to host future pantry boxes, with the long-term vision of creating a large and meaningful network of safe, accessible support points within the community.”

Do you have other projects in the pipeline?

“I am also exploring the development of hygiene kits to further support individuals experiencing financial hardship or crisis.

“The focus remains on strengthening and expanding the Period Pantry Project, with hygiene kits being planned as a natural next step to widen the project’s impact and ensure no one in the community is left without access to essential hygiene support.”

If you would like to get involved with The Period Pantry, or would like more information you can message their Facebook: The Period Pantry.

This month, local property expert David Leake from The Property Experts talks to us about January’s asking price rise and what that means

JANUARY ASKING PRICES RISED AT FASTEST PACE IN OVER A DECADE

Estate agents and vendors appear to have started 2026 in a bullish mood after the average price of homes coming to the market for sale rose 2.8% between December and January.

The latest Rightmove House Price Index shows the average price of new homes coming to market in January was £368,031, up £9,893 on December.

This is the largest ever price increase seen in the month of January, and the largest of any month since June 2015.

National average property prices are now 0.5% ahead of this time last year as prices rebound after the Budget.

The number of available homes for sale is the highest it’s been at this time of year since 2014, and with a third of existing homes for sale seeing a price reduction, new sellers should be wary of being too optimistic on price, Rightmove said.

This record January price increase comes as home-movers return to the market, with the traditional Rightmove Boxing Day bounce combining with a recovery in market sentiment after the uncertainty of the Budget and December’s interest rate cut. Article supplied by: Estate Agency Today
