4 COVER CREATIVE WARREN DAY

WARREN DAY Warren Day is a landscape artist specialising in trees, forests and rural landscapes in the Forest of Dean, Wye Valley and surrounding areas. He focuses on paths and trackways, undergrowth and scrubland, a variety of deciduous and evergreen trees, and forms of integrated man-made activity. What distinguishes his work are the real earth samples that are integrated into the artwork from the location depicted. This not only adds texture, it also reinforces the connection between the landscape and the painting. On closer inspection, one can see small fragments of leaves, seeds and other organic matter within this ‘living painting medium’. Warren’s highly detailed mixed media and gouache paintings capture the exquisite and captivating beauty of the landscape. Warren spent his childhood in the Forest of Dean but left during his mid-teens. In the early 1990s, Warren completed a degree in Design (illustration) and consequently began his artistic career as an editorial illustrator working for clients such as Punch magazine and the Radio Times. A few years later he obtained a PGCE and worked as a teacher for over twenty years in a college in Swindon. After the birth of his first child, Warren returned to the forest and this reinvigorated his interest in painting as he was again immersed in this beautiful landscape. He began his new pathway as an artist and he also tutors part-time at Artspace in Cinderford, an exciting local arts centre working with people of mixed abilities from young carers, to established artists. At Artspace, he teaches a variety of subjects

He exhibits regularly at Creates Gallery in Monmouth and the Dean Heritage Centre near Soudley. His work ranges from miniature to large scale so there is always a painting suitable for everyone. Upon seeing his work, many people have said that Warren has a natural affinity with the forest, which is no surprise as he enjoys cross

POTTERY & GLASS

SARAH & CHRIS GREENING

SARAH & CHRIS GREENING Chris and Sarah Greening live and work in Worcester. They have studios where they create their own pieces and run classes for small groups. Chris has had his own pottery workshop for over 25 years and creates mainly functional pottery along with a few sculptural pieces. He has a marine geology background and was brought up on the Jurassic coast which has heavily influenced his work. He uses coloured liquid clay (slip) which provides a fantastic fluid palette for him to explore patterns in nature, particularly marine geomorphology, such as the drawing back of silt by the waves on a sandy shoreline.

Sarah’s jewellery designs are stocked in many art galleries and shops across the UK and earlier this year she had some very exciting orders to stock the Kew Gardens shop and Bristol Art Gallery and more locally, Bevere Gallery and Worcester Art Gallery. Chris and Sarah can often be found at art markets across the Midlands as well as

Sarah has a science background and has spent the last few years experimenting with the chemistry of glass fusing and developing her own methods to create unusual kiln-fused glass jewellery designs. She uses shimmering micas or gas-forming chemical reactions which give each piece its unique quality.

Both Chris and Sarah run classes in their respective crafts at home in Worcester and people travel from quite a distance to take part in these and leave great reviews. They also run half- and all-day (includes lunch) combined pottery and glass courses which prove popular for those wishing to try both crafts.

ANN PALMER

ARTIST

ANN PALMER Ann paints in oils on canvas. Her work is vibrant, loose, expressive and a joy to hang on your wall. Ann lives in Rochester and works from Studio One in the Nucleus Arts Centre at the Halpern Conservancy Building, 15A, High Street, ME1 1PY, where she

is exhibiting through November and December in the Halpern Gallery behind the cafĂŠ. Ann developed her reputation as a plein air painter; working in the vineyards of the Loire Valley and around the Kent Coast. Ann has been painting in Whitstable for some 5 years, standing on the pebbly beach watching the tide ebb and flow, the morning mist across the Swale (the water which separates the Isle of Sheppey from the mainland), the light on the horizon, the clouds coming in from the west over London, and the light

out to sea to the north and east. The low tide exposes sandbanks, pebbles, and seafood for the gulls to seek. This year, Ann has been working on a series of paintings called Shoreline which depict the beaches of Whitstable on the north coast of Kent and in Cornwall. The paintings show various times of day and year, the state of the tide and all weathers. These paintings form the subject of her current exhibition. Ann builds her own canvases using stretcher bars and 12oz cotton duck, then she primes it with 3 coats of acrylic primer and/or gesso. She usually coats the canvas with turpsy red, often Indian red, sometimes burnt sienna. When this is dry she lays out the scene with a thin coat of oil paints then building on this, firstly using a brush, then thick oil paint applied with a palette knife.

The extent to which the painting is built with more impasto depends on the scene and mood. Ann’s style is impressionistic, representative tending towards some abstraction and expressionism. Ann exhibits in Capital Arts Gallery in Eltham and the Horsebridge Gallery in Whitstable, and with Gabriel Fine Arts in London. Next year, her work will be in the Eclectic Gallery in Margate and Rossocinabra Gallery in Rome as well as being represented by PAKS Gallery, Michael Joseph and New York Art Productions. www.annpalmerartist.com ann.loire@gmail.com 07831 547811 Twitter name: @annpalmerartist Facebook: AnnPalmerArtist Instagram: @annpalmerartist

ARTIST

SYLVIA WADSLEY

SYLVIA WADSLEY Sylvia is a contemporary landscape artist who lives and works near Stroud. Her themes are based on the natural landscape, particularly her affinity with coasts, estuaries and flatlands. Big skies have fascinated her since her childhood in the fens. A frequent traveller, her work has been influenced by recent visits to Greece, Holland and Norway, as well as an artists’ residency at Cape Cornwall. Sylvia sketches and takes photographs in situ which she later works on in the studio in a process she calls

‘distillation’, reconstructing the landscape, using imagination to reflect mood and memory. She aims to mirror our connection with the natural world and our disconnection from it. As an individual and an artist, the effects of urbanisation, technology and climate change worry her. It is often said that her work has a serene air, and she remarks “sometimes it’s the calm before the storm!” In the work she produces it is important to her to put in her feelings but leave the interpretation to the viewer. Sylvia works primarily in oils, “I love oil paints and always experiment, and push my process within this medium”. Smaller works are painted with gouache, another favourite, alongside mixed media. Often her work leans towards abstraction and she has a real affinity with the use of colour. Sylvia is having a solo show at the Red Dot Gallery, St Mary’s Street, Painswick, from Wednesday 27th November to Tuesday 3rd December 2019. She will be showing her work from her residency at Brisons Veor at Cape Cornwall, along with other landscapes and climate change inspired pieces. www.sylviawadsley.com Instagram: @sylviawadsleypainter

CREATES GALLERY at TAURUS CRAFTS Earlier this year, Creates Gallery opened its third exhibition space at Taurus Crafts in the Forest of Dean. This creative space now houses solo shows by our resident artists as well as guest shows every few months. The latest exhibition presents a body of work by Nick Pritchard. Nick has worked in the communication design industry as a graphic designer, working with many high profile clients, such as The National Parks of England and Wales, Natural Resources Wales, and The Marine Conservation Society. Working with clients such as these further fuelled his passion for the environment and landscape, particularly the reclaimed landscapes from the industrial past and the rivers and streams that were often integral to it.

Hazy Morning Ross on Wye by Nick Pritchard

Fortunate to live in an area with such diverse and beautiful landscapes, Nick feels compelled to capture the colours, shapes and textures, and in doing so, he hopes to capture a sense of place, something that is special and unique to the moment. Nick is particularly interested in textures, the application and manipulation of paint and how this can build into representation.

LYN EVANS

LYN EVANS Lyn trained at Sunderland College of Art and worked as an artist intermittently until 2004 when she was able to start painting full-time. She lives and works in Cumbria where she finds inspiration at every turn and in every season. Lyn works in watercolour, pastel and oil, producing paintings that help her show and share her joy in the landscapes she loves. The ethereal mists swirling around the mountains and lakes lends itself perfectly to the use of watercolour and then in the autumn, she enjoys

the immediacy that can only come by working with pastels. She delights in being able to show the glorious colours and tones of the land with just the simple selection of the correct stick of brilliant, soft colour. Lyn’s method of working is simple.

usually she returns to the studio to complete the piece. She will use the gathered source material to make a rough drawing and then a thumbnail tonal study. Then she decides on her colour palette. If it is to be a pastel painting she will sometimes select the pastels in advance.

She usually starts en plein air, producing a working drawing which sometimes (weather permitting) becomes a finished painting, but

Lyn has written articles for The Art of Watercolour magazine and Unison Pastels. She has exhibited at the Mall Galleries in London, Fabriano in Italy and private collections worldwide. She holds classes and workshops throughout the year in her lovely wood stove warmed gallery at the foot of Blencathra.

CREATES GALLERY

CREATES GALLERY, MONMOUTH Our Winter Exhibition opened on the 7th November at our contemporary art gallery in Monmouth. This exhibition features inspiring works by well-established artists and makers. The Winter Exhibition will be our largest show of the year, exhibiting works by our resident gallery favourites, including; Pat Handley, Kip Kavallares, Warren Day, Doug Eaton, Paul Burgess, David Hoskin, Nik Burns, Claire Lovell, Mark Beresford, and new artists; Rachel Padley, Nia Mackeown, Leigh Sladen and Melanie Cormack-Hicks among others. The exhibition explores a range of different disciplines that include Fine Art, Ceramics, Sculpture, Glass, and Jewellery by master Jeweller Paul Hatton. Our featured artist is Richard Corbett. Richard’s oil paintings capture the ephemeral qualities of light and the atmosphere it creates; evoking memories of moments spent in landscapes or more intimate spaces. Whether he is portraying wooded glades, river scenes, dappled light in forests, or the local orchards and the olive groves seen on his travels, he aims to celebrate the importance of the trees around him and how they take on new personalities with the changing seasons. We also welcome back Ceramist Sue Carr and Sculptor Deborah Harrison. Sue Carr specialises in hand-thrown largescale porcelain ware. Sue creates highly decorative pieces using exclusive glazes that she has formulated over the last 30 years. Deborah Harrison is a contemporary

sculptor who specialises in stone. Her stone carving uses a technique called ‘Carving Direct’ which was used by Henry Moore and Michaelangelo. As Deborah carves, she ‘reaches a skin’ after which she describes the sculpture taking on a life of its own. The Winter Exhibition is on show until 4th January 2020 and is an excellent stop for unique festive gifts. Remember to shop local this Christmas and support our incredible artist and makers. All works are available on the Collectorplan Scheme through the Arts Council Wales. Through this plan, you can purchase

MELANIE FERGUSON

MELANIE FERGUSON Today, Melanie is remarried and again living in Utah, with her husband, Greg, and their Golden retriever, Joey. Her paintings are featured in major shows and sought after by collectors. And she has no regrets about her journey.

Melanie Ferguson’s distinctive artistic style reflects a lifelong commitment to freedom, wonder and beauty. She grew up in Utah’s spectacular Wasatch Mountains, exploring the mysteries of nature at her family’s lake cabin, where her free-spirited grandmother inspired her to live life on her own terms. To pursue the adventurous life she craved, Melanie realized she’d have to leave her Mormon roots and patriarchal community. At the University of Utah, she took art classes, studied French and dreamed of living and painting in Paris. She moved first to Los Angeles, but marriage and family responsibilities prevented her from pursuing art school and the career she’d envisioned.

Fall Leaves

Meanwhile, staying connected with art through classes and workshops proved a happy reprieve. When her two daughters left for college, Melanie relished her newfound freedom to travel, study and paint. She began to enjoy success; her plein air landscapes were selected for gallery shows and sold to collectors.

“I’m thankful for my past,” she says. “When you go through a dark night, you live – and paint – more authentically. Now I can offer my audience a deeper, more meaningful way of looking at the world.” A way of experiencing the freedom, wonder and beauty she’s always prized. www.melaniefergusonart.com meljosiefergie@gmail.com Instagram: melaniefergusonart

Then Melanie’s 30-year marriage – and her world – fell apart. Though she struggled at first to stay strong and find a new path forward, her decision to choose beauty over bitterness eventually led to a new passion – abstract art.

Ghost Ranch

“I was no longer interested just in creating pretty pictures,” she says. “I became more interested in looking beneath the surface and sharing with others what I see.”

LAURE FILHO

JEWELLERY

15

LAURE FILHO From her studio in the heart of the Cotswolds, Laure creates ferociously hip, handmade organic and elemental forms from precious metals and stones. Her jewellery is distinct in style and individuality. Both precious and semi-precious stones feature significantly in Laure’s pieces, her love of stones being kindled through her travels in Africa and the Americas.

Her love of jewellery started as a young girl, rifling through the jewellery boxes of both her French and Danish grandmothers, both of whom had a wealth of eclectic pieces which ignited a passion for the mini sculpture that jewellery is. Having studied Goldsmithing at London Guildhall in her early twenties, Laure has been making jewellery for over 20 years. Most of her pieces are one of a kind, either for small capsule collections

or bespoke commissions. Working closely with her clients, she designs and creates truly unique pieces, celebrating the individual, whether it be for an engagement, wedding, big birthday, anniversary, a treat or even divorce! Remodelling is popular with clients, and important in these days of fast fashion. Laure incorporates the stones and precious metals from old jewellery that is no longer worn or enjoyed into the new piece, without losing the emotion or history that accompanies the original jewellery. She very much enjoys fabricating unique pieces that can carry on into another generation.

Laure very much believes that jewellery should be worn and not locked away in a box, that it is wearable art that should be relished, enjoyed and shown off at every opportunity. www.laurefilhojewellery.co.uk laure@laurefilhojewellery.co.uk Instagram: @laurefilhojewellery

ARAMINTA FOGDEN

ARAMINTA FOGDEN Araminta is an artist based near Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire who grew up on a smallholding, within a large family and their ever growing menagerie of family pets. They had little Zebra finches, stroppy Muscovy ducks, haughty hens, rampant rabbits and Thelwell-esque rescue ponies. She admits, growing up, she was never really one for animal husbandry, avoiding mucking out and getting all muddy, but she was more than happy to draw and paint her furry feathery family and immortalise them with her sketch books. Now the hobby has turned professional and Araminta sells her original paintings to a growing audience, as she attends local arts and craft markets, exhibits with galleries and sells online.

The subject matter has changed slightly as she now concentrates more on our beautiful wildlife. “I love to paint badgers, pheasants, hares, owls and rabbits. They give me so much to work with, in their fantastic colours, lines and patterns, attitudes, energy and body language.” Working primarily in oil paints, Araminta’s animals hark back to the Arts and Crafts movement from the turn of the last century, very much inspired by the designs of William Morris, William De Morgan and their followers. Large, up to the edge, bold kings of their countryside, they fill the frame with energy and colour! “I endeavour to capture a sense of personality within the creatures, an all knowing glimmer of intelligence in their eyes, whether they are small mice or large leaping hares.” If a design proves popular with its audience, it can also be used to create Giclee prints, greetings cards, place mats, bags, mugs etc., allowing Araminta to sell wholesale and to provide a varied price range of goodies for her customers. www.aramintafogden.com minty.fogden@gmail.com 01452 780145

Emma works with a number of substrates, but favours aluminum discs and ceramic tiles. She occasionally paints on Yupo, which is synthetic paper designed specifically for Alcohol Inks. The non-porous nature of aluminum, allows the inks to sit on the surface, enabling Emma to add many layers of colour in combination with the shine of the aluminum. The results are works

When Emma started her artistic journey, she had no idea how exciting it would be. In the beginning, she was mainly gifting her work to family and friends, but is now a successful member of an Artists Co-operative, selling her work in a local gallery.

Emma Sharman is a self-taught abstract artist, working primarily with Alcohol Inks, Pebeo, mixed media and resin. When Emma came across Alcohol Inks as a medium, she was instantly attracted to their vibrant, free flowing, organic qualities and the endless artistic possibilities they offered. The inks can be blown, pulled, pushed or simply left to work their own magic. It was instantly clear to Emma that the free flowing nature of the inks, was an excellent way to interpret nature, space, landscapes and seascapes .

Her creations capture energy, flow and movement in a build up of colour and design. They represent Emma’s own curiosity and sense of awe in the beauty and chaos, in not just in our own planet Earth, but also in outer space. Many of her pieces are inspired by the teasing, tantalising images sent back to earth

Each piece of work takes approximately six weeks to finish and involves multiple layers of setting spray, UV protection and finally resin. The resin not only offers further protection, but equally adds a whole new depth and dimension to the piece, allowing the viewer to look into the piece and appreciate the vibrancy of

Whilst selling her work is always gratifying, Emma says that the real reason she paints is simple. When she is creating, everything else is forgotten and she is just in the moment, something she finds difficult to achieve in her day to day life. Hugely inspired by the works of George Stubbs, Emily aims to create pieces with his classical accuracy but with a more modern day contemporary twist. In the coming year, Emily is keen to get her work into galleries around Gloucestershire, selling originals as well as her high quality canvas prints. She’s thrilled to be considering potential art residencies abroad.

Originally from East Sussex, Emily moved to Gloucestershire to study at Hartpury College, where she achieved a degree in Equine Science. Although fascinated by the anatomy and physiology of horses, she knew that a career working with them wasn’t for her. She went on to work in farming on a large goat dairy for several years before rediscovering her artistic talents. She began by taking a few commissions of animal portraits, first in pencil, then moving into highly detailed pastel pieces. As demand

ARTIST ANNE BATE-WILLIAMS

ANNE BATE-WILLIAMS Anne’s art, family and faith are the fabric and texture of her life – inextricably interwoven. She has a passion for collage born out of her keen sense for the surreal – a constant feature since her early studies.

Anne’s art is developmental, extending existing skills (such as ceramics) and at the same time exploring new means of expression. Collagraphic techniques – in building and overlaying images and materials – enable her to adopt an evolutionary approach to the artistic production process. She is particularly keen to ensure her work is shared as widely as possible through innovative use of social media and the publication of limited edition prints.

With Dali and the psychologist Carl Jung as crucial influences on Anne’s outlook and art, she uses the juxtaposition of images as a way of communicating her emotional response to places and things. Collage suits the organic nature of her method of working. Inspiration might come from a building or a ruin – something that sparks a sense of discovery. Anne loves old buildings that are imbued with history and a feeling of what has gone ‘before’, they can sometimes elicit overwhelming emotion that feeds and generates her artistic response.

By Chance II

Illusion

The unusual beauty of things that are falling down or in decay can speak deeply of the joy of what has passed or the anticipation of resurrection. Anne uses photographs and mixed media, often fragments of images, to develop a piece which grows naturally out of her personal view and experience of a place. These images of things which have their own reality and message in their own time, resonate with our own experience and feeling in the ‘here and now’. These fragments, strangely familiar, can appear like magical mirrors where we glimpse our own future.

Recently Anne has been exploring her roots in the west of Ireland (her father was born in County Limerick). This has given her a new perspective, in appreciating how her origins, her interests and passions, and her love for family inspires her Art – creating a picture of their own that she is now beginning to see… as if for the first time. LITTLE ORCHARD STUDIOS Work by Little Orchard Studios is produced by Catherine Hawkridge from her home in the Wye Valley on the Gloucestershire/Welsh borders, where she lives with her husband and young family. Originally trained in Theatre Design, she’s worked on a range of exciting Film, Theatre and TV productions. Catherine later gained a PGCE, resulting in a decade teaching Creative Arts subjects.

The Weathering series includes expressive Meadow pieces working in a range of photographic and paint media, designed to create joy and calm. Her work is inspired by the beautiful imperfections of the natural world due to aging, weather and general disorder. Subjects often

Wellbeing is integral to both the outcome and process, as purposeful and accidental marks, spills, flicks and drips combine to create finished pieces which are brimming with colour, layers and texture. The most recent strand is the ‘In the Forest’ series, which combines figurative and

botanical subjects, celebrating a love of local wildlife and even featuring the newest studio residents, Claude and Vincent, the Orchard Kittens. Catherine’s Art work is currently showing at The Secret Gallery, Newent, at Toast, Tutshill, and at Paint on Me, Chepstow. She has an expanding Etsy shop, stocking the ‘In the Forest’ limited edition prints. She loves working on commission, be that creating a series of portraits for a special celebration or a Meadow painting full of a client’s favourite flowers.

the UK. David particularly loves making commissions for his clients and seeing the reaction afterwards. Now living in rural Bickerstaffe in Lancashire, married to Kim and Dad of Lawrie and Olivia, David’s artwork is now going from strength to strength and he is being exhibited by a wide variety of galleries and held in private collections across the UK, Europe and USA.

David likes to make mosaics that are influenced by his own passions such as iconic music album covers, fine works of art, rare racing cars, vintage posters and iconic buildings. His attention to detail, discipline and patience are paramount in producing each artwork. Every mosaic work is totally unique and made with great attention to detail. He loves ‘getting cracking’ with each and every stage, Working mainly under the name of ‘Big & Small Mosaics’, David has had appearances on BBC TV shows including Home Is Where The Art Is and DIY SOS, both hosted by Nick Knowles. For DIY SOS, he made and donated a mosaic for the Sweet family in Weston-Super-Mare. He has also been on the radio and in local press talking about his art. As the name suggests, David loves to make both big and small mosaics, and his daughter Olivia (aka small mosaic) likes to chip in! His work is proving a hit with art galleries across

26 GALLERY DARL-E AND THE BEAR

DARL-E AND THE BEAR Darl-e and the Bear is a new venture, showcasing exceptional contemporary visual arts. The first gallery, No 17, opened in June 2019, and in November 2019, the second gallery opened. Formerly the old fire station, the Station Gallery and The Garden Room are connected to No 17 by a courtyard. Situated in the heart of historic Woodstock, the home of Blenheim Palace and a short drive from Oxford, Darl-e and the Bear represents established and emerging artists, promoting quality craftsmanship from artists and makers working with integrity and imagination within the disciplines of fine art, craft and design. The galleries offer a warm welcome and they strongly believe in creating a relaxing, calm, beautiful and ever-changing inviting space to showcase their artists and craftspeople, to help their customers create bespoke, decorated living spaces. Darl-e and the Bear are an eclectic, artist-led gallery, run by founder Julie Wigg, who is an artist and designer and has a deep passion for the arts and who believes that different is good. Their company ethos is to strive to wander from the

path of manufactured living, promote a sense of wellbeing and be conscious of their environmental footprint. They use only environmentally friendly packaging, compostable and recycled materials within the gallery and a portion of the gallery profits go to supporting their chosen charities. Each year, in between the lively exhibitions and events, the gallery aims to run a programme of 2/3-week artist-led exhibitions, providing opportunities for artists to show their work in a professional gallery setting, and artist in residency placements, to broaden the experiences of both the artist and their audience.

ARTIST

SALLY HARROLD

SALLY HARROLD Sally started painting in 2016 as a form of relaxation from her job as a counsellor working with people affected by a diagnosis of cancer in Cardiff. Since then she has moved to a smallholding in Carmarthenshire surrounded by nature, tranquillity, stunning views, big skies and a host of rescue animals.

Sally is drawn to and connects with a love for colour and texture. She paints intuitively from her emotional response inspired by the sky, and the stunning views from her studio. She paints semi-abstract landscapes and florals in acrylics, oils and cold wax. Sally was thrilled to sell ten paintings during her first open art trail this year (Tywi Valley Open Art Studios). As a result of this and a particular visitor, she was asked to take part in The Albany Gallery Winter Exhibition in Cardiff and has been approached to be a guest artist in two Welsh galleries next year.

Sally also offers studio painting days for complete beginners, or a space for more experienced artists who want to immerse themselves in nature and get some new inspiration or ‘loosen up’ their painting style. “Painting has been a complete revelation to me and I can’t imagine my life

Julie is a Welsh artist whose work is inspired by the landscape and nature. She has a very strong ancestral connection to the Clydach Gorge valley, being one of many generations to settle in this landscape. The ancestral footsteps Julie follows hold the remains of an industrial past which form its landscape today. The paths have since faded and become impassable as nature has taken over, but the memories are rooted and preserved. Culture, tradition and place are connected by these pathways and when
