past year, but it aptly describes so many aspects of our lives during the pandemic.

Unprecedented change in everything.

Unprecedented health issues. Unprecedented numbers moving to South Florida.

Unprecedented interest in the Club. Never before have we had a 3-4 year wait list for membership.

We have a great problem: we are very busy. For those venturing out, most agree that every restaurant in Fort Lauderdale is busy and, as we’ve talked to other FL clubs,

they are also experiencing a tremendous boom. Because Florida is one of the few states that has more favorable Covid guidelines and more are deciding to relocate, our town is experiencing “unprecedented” growth.

Change can be hard, but change can also produce new ideas, fresh perspective, and a positive momentum. As much as we value tradition here at Coral Ridge, we also know that change can be good. We appreciate your patience as the Club moves forward, making adjustments along the way.

“I have to say that the Club is doing such a great job amidst this pandemic. There are so many challenges and you are adhering to guidelines and making us all feel safe. I brought my 88-yearold Mom for lunch and it was so nice to bring her somewhere where we feel comfortable. You did such a good job with the take-out options in the beginning. The course is phenomenal – I’ve gotten out to play a couple times. Another job very well done. The Club really is doing everything right.

My husband and I both feel that the club has done an amazing job of keeping things as close to normal as possible...familiar staff members are still there, the dining room feels very safe (it’s the only indoor dining room he has been to in a year), the golf, tennis, pool operations are all running...except for FPL pulling or cutting the plug on you from time to time (which is certainly beyond your control)...even that, the staff takes in stride!

Memorial Day BBQ Celebrate Memorial Day relaxing at the pool with your family and friends.

Our traditional holiday celebrations have been at the core of our time-honored events.

But like everything during this pandemic, we are making changes to do what is possible and what is safe.

We want everyone to know how much we would like to serve all our families at every holiday, but due to 50% limited seating, 6foot distancing of tables and the serving limitations of single serve dining as opposed to buffets, it is becoming a challenge.

Our Food & Beverage staff are working on ways we can accommodate the most Members, within guidelines at all our celebrations. We appreciate your patience as we thoughtfully prepare for the future. Stay tuned to our email communication as event plans unfold.

Competition on the Courts was held on January 30 at the Lauderdale Yacht Club and as LYC defeated Coral Ridge 9 matches to 6, the Challenge will again be held at the Lauderdale Yacht Club in 2022.

THIS YEAR’S Fort Lauderdale Challenge

Parents are invited to sign up for our popular tennis programs. Tiny Tots (ages 4 - 6) will have a one-hour clinic from 9 - 10 am with an option for staying to swim and have lunch. Juniors (ages 7 - 14) will be active on the courts from 10:15 am - 12:15 pm and can also opt into staying for lunch and swimming. Great instruction, prizes and fun on the courts! All Covid guidelines

Tennis Club Championships Both the singles and doubles Club Championships will take place in the fall. The doubles portion will take place over the first two weekends in October and the singles portion will take place over the first two weekends in November. Championship (with a consolation round) and B divisions will be offered to both men and women.

Rally Success!

23rd Annual Rally For The Cure Success!

SPECIAL THANKS to the 84 participants

including Members and guests, as well as local vendors and staff who supported this event and cause. This year’s event was a huge success. Raising $10,420 will add to the $154,535 raised since the event inception in

1997. The day was a grand success much in part to the dedication of Committee Members: Sis Ertley, Mary Costantino, Denise Bryan, Catherine Lenz, Gerrie Roberts and Mary Ann Uznis. Again, thank you all for your hard work and dedication to the success of this event! We could not have done it without you!

• The average number of ball marks made on greens per round is 8 per golfer.

• Assuming only 170 rounds are played each day, our greens receive: 1,360 impressions daily, 40,800 per month, or more than 489,600 per year.

Are you wondering how to make a putt under these conditions?

Kindly repair your ball marks, plus one more. Thank you all!

• Please continue to fill your divots and smooth evenly.

• Sand refill stations are located at tee # 6, Carousel, and Shelter on 15.

• Please rake footprints in the bunkers.

Rakes are on all golf carts and are sanitized after each round. We request all walkers take a rake as well.

• Always enter/exit the bunker at the lowest point to avoid injury and turf damage.

Repairing Ball Marks

Filling Divots

Do: Restore surface smoothness by gently pushing from the sides and, in some cases, gently lifting the compressed area.

Do: Fill divot holes with the material provided by the maintenance staff.

Don’t: Aggressively twist (like the pros on national television), which does more harm than good.

Don’t: Overfill the hole, which results in a sand mound that can dull or damage the mowing units.

Raking Bunkers Do: Push sand up the bunker face and enter and exit from the low side of the bunker.

Don’t: Climb out of the high side of the bunker, which causes damage to liners and grass faces. Not to mention unsafe.

Take the time to enter and exit properly and smooth the sand with your feet for everyone’s enjoyment.

Steps to Better Putts Having a good routine is very important.

Try these 4 steps the next time you are on the putting green:

1. Line up your ball with the intended line, then stand behind the ball to make sure the line is correct.

2. Take practice strokes looking at your target to find your feel for how much swing you will need to stroke the putt to your target.

3. Ensure that your body is parallel to the line on your ball and that the line on your putter is lined up with the line on your ball.

4. Keep your body as still as you can and swing the putter with your arms through the ball. Your eyes should stay on the ball; try to see the putter make contact with the ball.

This will help keep your body quiet as your arms and the putter swing.

Rees Jones Walks Down Memory Lane The par-three eighth hole has a large tier separating two distinct portions of the green

a renovation at Coral Ridge Country Club in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The eighteen-hole layout was designed and built by Jones’s father Robert Trent Jones Sr in 1954 and was owned by the family for many years.

“We used to stay in an apartment right behind the golf course, almost every winter,” said Jones. “Coming out of World War II, everyone was starting over, and Dad was able to build it with his own construction team.

But there was no drainage – he just built greens, tees and bunkers.”

Over the years, Jones Sr would regularly tinker with the layout. “Like Donald Ross, who lived next door to Pinehurst No. 2 and changed it over the years, that’s what Dad did,” said Jones. “And we’ve restored that improved Robert Trent Jones golf course, rather than the original one.

“I am finishing what he would have done if he had today’s technology at his disposal,” says Jones, who had the benefit of experience of hundreds of rounds on the course, but also

referenced old topographical maps, historic photos and aerial imagery of the course from 1961 in developing plans for the renovation.

The main goal of the project was “to bring the course up to date,” said Jones, with a particular emphasis on raising greens and fairways to better withstand storm events, using fill generated from the excavation of ponds. “We elevated and contoured fairways, rebuilt bunkers with modern technology and enlarged the greens back to their original sizes, or a little bit larger,” said Jones. Greens have also been recontoured to suit today’s speeds and the total course length has increased to 7,300 yards.

Jones says that one of the highlights of his father’s design at Coral Ridge is the variety:“It has as much variety as any Florida golf course, and that’s hard to do when you have a flat piece of land.”

Along with design associate Steve Weisser, the Jones team emphasized that variety: “Every hole really has a different twist – there’s not one single green that really resembles

another, nor are the contours within the greens similar,” says Jones.

Of the par-three eighth, for example, he says: “I don’t think there’s another hole like it anywhere. It has a very large front portion of the green, a sizeable slope up to the rear. It’s really two holes in one – a distinctly different golf hole. Players can use the slope as a backstop when the pin is at the front but have to roll the ball up the tier when the pin is at the back portion.”

“Eighteen is a phenomenal hole,” adds Jones.“450 yards from the back, with water on the left and a Biarritz green. And one thing that has changed from Dad’s course, because of the newly elevated greens, is that we have chipping areas around the greens with pronounced drops, including to the right of eighteen. The average golfer can putt, the good player can choose different clubs.”

The course’s new bunkering was inspired

by Jones Sr’s early work.“These bunkers really have a look of the courses at Banff Springs and Jasper Park that my father marked out for Stanley Thompson. They have that sculpted look you would see in brochures at the start of his career,” said Jones.

Coral Ridge reopened in late 2020 to widespread praise. Jones says:“One of the members said to me: ‘Magnificent. That says it all’.”

since 1966, Mike O’Bryon knows better than most what our H.O.M.E. motto is all about.

He practically lived at Coral Ridge as a teenager, played golf with Robert Trent Jones, and sons Rees and Bob, experienced hospitality through the decades, and has enjoyed extraordinary celebrations at the Club.

O’Bryon’s father and friends could be credited with creating the enduring legacy of the Club. They approached Mr. Jones in the mid-70s and asked him about developing a Membership category for adult children at a reduced rate and the ability to pay the initiation fee over time. He agreed and Mike was encouraged by his dad to “get over to CRCC right away before they change their mind!”

“My dad was an amateur photographer with a good eye and we always had a camera sitting around the house. I started taking pictures on my own (usually with an old Polaroid) while in high school. One of my first golf photos - where I really got the “photo bug” - was at Coral Ridge. Arnold Palmer, my golfing hero, played an exhibition match at CRCC and I made a photo of him just off the 10th tee with Perry Como swinging in the background. Golf Pro at the time, Lew Worsham, was kind enough to have Palmer sign the Polaroid for me.”

“Lew knew I liked a special type of leather grip on my golf clubs so he took me to the club room and said, “let me show you how Ben did it.” I said, “Ben who?”“Ben Hogan, son!” he shot back.“I learned to grip clubs like Ben Hogan in OUR Golf Shop!”

Mike worked as a Miami Herald photographer for 15 years as the “un-official” golf photographer because he could usually

identify the tour players by sight, moving from intern to Chief Photographer.“In 1986, while on assignment for Sports Illustrated at the Masters, I took the cover photo of Jack Nicklaus winning his 6th green jacket and from there on, golf photography was my primary focus. Later in the summer of 1986, Sports Illustrated sent me to photograph Greg Norman. We hit it off and became good friends both professionally and personally.”

Mike has covered over 400 golf tournaments, from the Doherty held at CRCC to more than 30 majors and continues to photograph a few PGA TOUR events each year.

2021 marks his 50th year photographing golf tournaments.

Coming to Coral Ridge since he was 16, Mike has enjoyed so many “life moments” at the Club.

“My wife, Linda, and I had one of our very first dates at Coral Ridge in 1968 and celebrated our 25th Anniversary here. Our daughter learned to eat stone crabs and was married at the Club. Our grandkids all learned to swim in the CRCC pool. I can’t walk into the Men’s Locker Room without seeing the image of my dad, C.W.“Bill” O’Bryon, and his buddies playing cards by the window.

“I’ve played golf with Julius Boros, Sam Snead and Buffalo Bob at CRCC. I played a few holes with Mickey Mantle, practiced with Whitey Ford, caddied for Joanne Carner and Alice Dye and my Dad and I played our last round together at Coral Ridge. I’ve danced with my mother, my wife, my daughter and my granddaughters at Coral Ridge.”

Mike has more than memories of the Club, he has a photo archive to prove it!

Editors Note: Finding a great golf photographer is a feat. Realizing we had one as a Member was a dream come true! Mike created the photos for the accompanying Golf Course Architecture article and will be shooting around the Club this year to freshen up our communications.
