A MESSAGE

FROM OUR PRESIDENT

PRESIDENT KEN SHERMAN

The Strength of CRBRA Members As my term as 2019 CRBRA President comes to a close, I would like to thank you, the members, for allowing me the opportunity to serve you. I would also like to thank the Board of Directors and Executive Board for their direction and support throughout the year.

I would like to thank you, the members, for allowing me the opportunity to serve you.

I had but one goal for the year, to see through the transition and support our new Executive Officer, Kristen Egelston, in her first full year. Remember each event, each function, and each member was new to her in 2019. What a tremendous job she has done in making this transition. Kudos to the team who brought her aboard and thank you Kristen for pouring yourself into CRBRA. I look forward to the many years ahead. The Best in Building Awards was all the rage in November, with 148 entries, 48 awards, and attendance by 230 members. If you were unable to submit a project this year, get an early start for next year, as this event is sure to continue to grow. The 2019 submissions were incredible. The Best in Building Committee, chaired by Christine Raible, did a tremendous job. Thank you to all the micro-volunteers who assisted staff at the event. In November, PWB had a great Friendsgiving event at Best Tile creating holiday swags. They also donated items and volunteered at the Girls, Inc. holiday shopping event. If you haven’t attended a PWB event, you don’t know what you’re missing!

We held our first CRBRA Holiday Party in our own space this year, which was attended by 45 members. What made it great was getting the opportunity to talk in depth with everyone who attended about their year and their plans for 2020. FIL’s event at the Albany Pump Station on December 11th was well attended. This group of future leaders is an awesome bunch. Their events are always fun. I look forward to seeing them grow and become CRBRA leaders in the future. Speaking of looking forward...hold on to your hats...2019 Builder of the Year and 2018 Remodeler of the Year, Gregg Biché will be our 2020 President. Gregg has great vision and boundless energy. I look forward to all he will bring to CRBRA as President. Again, thank you all for allowing me the opportunity to serve you and the industry we love so much. Have a happy holiday and Happy New Year!

FROM THE EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S DESK KRISTEN EGELSTON

The Year of New Directions In my first column this year, I wrote about “new directions” being a fitting theme for 2019 and asked you to join me in embracing new ideas and potential changes. It’s because of the dedication of CRBRA’s long-standing volunteers on the board and committees, along with the experience DeeDee Enides and Mia Barbera brought to their roles as staff, that I was able to make this request. It’s also a credit to them that I can proudly say that our year of new directions is coming to a close on a very positive, successful note. As you’ll see on the 2019 By the Numbers graphic on page 13, member participation has been fantastic from event attendance to sponsorship support. We hope “Member participation we’ll have all of your continued support in 2020 – and has been fantastic from more. One of the new efforts undertaken this year was the development of micro-volunteer opportunities event attendance to for people looking for small or “one-off” volunteer commitments. The General Membership Meeting’s sponsorship support. micro-volunteer activity was very well-received and resulted in 100 pledge cards posted to the microWe hope we’ll have volunteer board that’s now hanging at CRBRA HQ. Examples of micro-volunteer opportunities that have all of your continued already been completed include registering a team of four to attend the FIL Bowling Night; greeting guests support in 2020.” at the Best in Building Awards; and securing a new sponsor for the Parade of Homes. Our committees will continuously identify these types of opportunities that you can pledge to help with in 2020. Finally, the building at 10 Old Plank Road in Clifton Park. The interior renovation is almost complete, with the bathroom remodels wrapping up by the end of the year! It has been a labor of love for so many of our dedicated members and is something to be truly proud of. Thank you to the generous 2019 All IN campaign contributors (see right). Plus, the building’s three rental suites are fully leased, and the Grand Hall is also being rented out typically about twice a month. In 2020, we’ll take our renovations back outside for Phase Three. More on that in a future issue. Thank you all for making 2019 an amazing year at CRBRA! I’m looking forward to continuing this momentum as we enter a new decade.

FEATURE

GIVING OUR ALL FOR THINGS OF MY VERY OWN Kristen Egelston

Members build shelves and collect donations for local charity Winston Churchill said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” It’s no secret that CRBRA’s builder, remodeler and associate members take great pride in being active participants in their local communities. Whether it’s volunteering with local charities, serving on boards and committees, sponsoring events or making financial contributions, CRBRA members always find a way to give back to the community and the causes they’re passionate about. In addition to the individual contributions being made in the community, CRBRA also has a Community Projects Committee to review, plan and carry out projects to help those in need in the Capital Region.

Special thanks to the following members for collaborating on the shelving project:

PIPINO BUILDERS QUALITY PM BELLEVUE BUILDERS SUPPLY CURTIS LUMBER Pipino Builders’ Paul Pipino, Timmy Ketz & Dajhon Packer assembling the shelves.

In previous years, CRBRA’s Community Projects Committee partnered with Catholic Charities to assist with rebuilding a home for an impoverished family, building new camp cabins at a summer camp for low-income children, and the renovation of a kitchen at a Catholic Charities day care center in Troy. CRBRA was honored to be awarded the Sister Maureen Joyce Charities Award by Catholic Charities in 2016. The committee was on hiatus in 2018 and most of 2019 as the CRBRA HQ renovation and All IN campaign were underway and heavily reliant on members contributions of time and materials. However, as the holidays approached, 2017 President Paul Pipino learned that local charity, Things of My Very Own, was in dire need of shelving units to organize the donations they receive for their Sponsor-a-Child in Crisis program. “Last year, my family shopped for wish tags and it stuck with me how much need there is for basic items like shampoo, toothpaste, shoes and warm clothes,” said Pipino. “I visited the facility in early October to find out how CRBRA could become a host location for their wish tags and that’s when the staff told me what they needed even more was shelving units for organizing all the donations they receive.” Things of My Very Own hoped to have the shelves built and assembled in their location by the end of October. With the board’s support, the Community Projects Committee got right to work. In this case, team work really did make the dream work. With materials donated by Bellevue Builders Supply and Curtis Lumber, Quality PM constructed and delivered the shelves and Pipino Builders assembled all 72 shelves at Things of My Very Own’s Schenectady location by the requested deadline. Quality PM’s Paul Couture unloading the shelves.

In conjunction with CRBRA’s Strategic Plan and a priority of 2020 President Gregg Biche´, the Community Projects Committee is planning to complete one small project each quarter. If you’re interested in joining

this committee or micro-volunteering as needed, please contact Kristen Egelston at kristen@crbra.com.

“I want to thank the team at the Capital Region Builders & Remodelers Association for the materials, time, and work given to building the shelves in our program room. This project made it possible for our organization to distribute thousands of gifts to children in crisis this holiday. On behalf of those children in need, thank you,” said Faith Pangburn the Program & Operations Manager at Things of My Very Own. Things of My Very Own also supplied CRBRA with 60 wish tags for local children in crisis, giving CRBRA the opportunity to host giving trees from November 25 to December 6. The wish tags provided the age, gender and general situation of the child-in-crisis along with their sizing for their most needed items. As Pipino recalled, the needs were basic items that most of us ordinarily take for granted. Fortunately, CRBRA members once again rose to the challenge and all 60 tags were taken and shopped for. For each tag a member took, a “giver” tag with their name on it was put on the trees currently on display at CRBRA.

This project made it possible for our organization to distribute thousands of gifts to children in crisis this holiday. On behalf of those children in need, thank you!” - Faith Pangburn, Program & Operations Manager, Things of My Very Own

About Things of My Very Own Things of My Very Own, Inc. provides crisis intervention services to children impacted by extensive abuse and/or neglect. Services are also available to children who are, solely due to the lack of items necessary for sustainability, at risk of a Child Protective Services intervention. Their goal is to keep children together with non-abusive family members, and out of the foster care system, whenever possible.

Giving Tree collection at CRBRA HQ

When CRBRA staff delivered the collected donations to Things of My Very Own on Friday, December 6, the volunteers were thrilled that so many tags were fulfilled for the children in need. Staff was also taken to see the program room and how the shelving units have revolutionized their process for organizing and distributing gifts. CRBRA is incredibly fortunate to have talented members who make a living doing what they love. Hopefully, this story of giving and its humbling impact will serve as encouragement to continue giving generously of your time, resources and talents.

The transition out of an abusive situation is often sudden and unexpected. Rarely is a child able to return home to retrieve belongings prior to their move. Things of My Very Own, Inc. recognizes the need for children to have everything they need from the first moment on. Their goal is to provide children with things of their very own on an immediate need basis, so they can begin their healing process. Emergency referrals are accepted from partnering agencies 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. Transitional Aid packages vary depending on the needs of the child but generally include clothing, outerwear, mattresses, bedding and personal hygiene products.
