Foreword Welcome to Brookview’s Best 20/20.

We have been under pressure to have a sale for some time now, and we have put together a select offering which excites us, and which we hope will excite you too.

When I look through this catalogue, these are animals that are going to be missed. They have pedigree, show records, classification, production, and temperament. They are a collection of the best we can offer in the Ayrshire, Holstein and Brown Swiss breeds.

We love good cows from any breed, and we have deliberately chosen from the top quartile of each age-group. However, Ayrshires remain an enduring passion for me, which my parents, Kevin and Judith, instilled in me from an early age.

We’re proud to have classified more EX cows in the last four years than any other Ayrshire herd in New Zealand. This year we also celebrate 40 years of breeding Ayrshires at Brookview, and Ayrshires form the backbone of this catalogue.

The small percentage of Holsteins in our herd [17%] go back to a purchase from the international Blackrose cow family. It is a buy, which has given us an incredible return on our investment, and a lot of fun. Our Swiss offering is again, the best we can put forward.

Any “pick of the pair” lots will be exactly that. We will not sell the second animals, because we believe that the person who buys deserves to enjoy the sole marketing rights to that individual.

We appreciate that buying and selling creates energy and opportunity. And, we have been lucky enough to have been on the other side of that equation many times.

It’s now time for us to share that work for the first time in our own right, and to offer you the value of our own 20/20 hindsight.

HISTORY CREATES THE FUTURE

The Steiner family has routinely handled tough farms in remote dairying locations – never making excuses for the day-to-day challenges share farming makes on families who want to pursue individual cow performance.

In the last four years Brookview has classified more EX cows than any other Ayrshire herd in New Zealand.

Brookview Ayrshires has called many places home during the last 40 years.

And, while its address may have changed up to seven times for some of their cows (as share farming contracts came to their natural conclusion) the results haven’t.

In the last four years Brookview has classified more EX cows than any other Ayrshire herd in New Zealand. It is the highest producing Ayrshire herd (over 300 cows) for 20112012. And, at the New Zealand Dairy Event Brookview is always front and centre – winning Premier Ayrshire Exhibitor nine out of the NZDE’s last 10 years.

And, it is common for cows to live well into the double digits at Brookview.

Their cows’ achievements have been a testament to the family’s skill and cowmanship, along with the longevity, fertility and pedigrees within this profile herd.

WHERE IT STARTED Vince was introduced to Ayrshires by his parents, Kevin and Judith, who established Brookview in 1973. Vince’s enduring love for the Ayrshire cow was nurtured by his parents, and they started his career in the breed when they registered two Ayrshires in his name.

Vince was later joined by his wife, Sheridan, and together with their family, they have built and developed a modern herd with an unflinching focus on type and performance.

NUTS AND BOLTS Today Brookview milks 360-head on 145ha at Tokoroa. The cows face a walk of 2.5km to the back paddocks on a rolling to steep farm that peaks at 480m above sea level.

Vince admits he has sprayed out some of the paddocks with his feet sitting on the dashboard of the tractor.

The herd is predominately registered Ayrshires, but it also includes 80 Holsteins, 25 Jerseys, half a dozen Brown swiss, and 20 crossbreds. It’s annual production is 180,000kg MS (500kg MS/cow).

A quarter of Brookview’s Holsteins trace back to Stookey Elm Park Blackrose-ET*RC EX96-3E GMD DOM - Canada’s 1995 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair Grand Champion.

SHOW RING SUCCESS

POWER-TO-WEIGHT RATIO

Before a Brookview exponent can show, she has to survive and be a productive part of a busy operation.

In the Semex On-Farm Holstein Competition for the Waikato region recently – which included more than 140 entries in the New Zealand Holstein stronghold – 11 of Brookview’s 15 entries came from the Blackrose family. Three of them finished in the top-six for their age-group.

Brookview milks just 60 registered Holsteins – less than half the total numbers entered by other breeders in the Waikato.

INFLUENTIAL SIRES

Brookview Lot Laguna EX9-9 remains the only Ayrshire to win four North Island Championships. She was Champion Cow at the breed’s 100th anniversary show during the inaugural 2009 NZDE. She finished Reserve Champion at the NZDE twice more to her herdmates.

She remains the only Ayrshire to win four North Island Championships.

Craigmyle Grand Secret EX6 would set up a family which today makes up a quarter of their Ayrshire numbers (see page 6).

HOLSTEINS POTENT When it comes to the select group of Holsteins there’s no getting past the impact that Clover-Lane Rosie Lo-ET has had at Brookview (see page 8). She goes back to international household name Blackrose.

One of the influential Ayrshire sires in the herd is Plum-Bottom Trident’s Lot. Vince said the advertising coming out of North America on the bull at the time carried the tag line: “Raised to Graze”, and at their peak Brookview was milking 40 to 50 of his daughters. Brookview Cassonova was another influential sire and the first bull Brookview had enter AI. They milked 50 to 60 daughters at the peak.

Within the Holsteins, the most influential sire has been Picston Shottle. And, many of today’s sires feature Shottle in their pedigree.

A PUBLIC “SECRET”

by Dianna Malcolm An Ayrshire dam and daughter bought at the Craigmyle Dispersal almost three decades ago today forms the cornerstone of two big-time families in two South Waikato operations.

With the value of 20/20 hindsight, Vince and Sheridan Steiner can now savour their decision to buy bred heifer – CRAIGMYLE GRAND SECRET EX6 – when their finances were screaming “no”.

Because she would go on to become a very public success story.

Secret was part of Craigmyle’s record dispersal for the breed in 1994, which averaged $2141 with a top price of $15,000.

SEVEN EX DAUGHTERS Secret was flushed twice as a five-year-old. Nine embryos were implanted for seven heifers. And, she had a natural heifer calf that year as well.

She only ever gave Brookview two bull calves naturally. She had seven EX daughters and one of her daughters, Brookview Blue Secrecy [affectionately known as Tubs] went EX4 before the classification system was changed. Tubs has six EX daughters to date.

Another daughter, Brookview BVC Secrecy (known as Sweetie) goes down as the bestuddered cow Brookview has bred. She’s the granddam of lot 5, Brookview Sweet Spark. The breed’s No. 1 production sire for Milk BV in New Zealand, Rosemoor Spark-ET is Tubs’ grandson.

“Secret’s daughters and granddaughters have become household names for us in our home, and to a certain degree in other people’s homes as well,” Vince said.

“A quarter of the 240 Ayrshires in our herd come from that family. We have used seven bulls out of that family as well, so those bloodlines are also all infused into the top lines of the families who don’t go back to them on their maternal side.

Craigmyle Grand Secret EX6 THE VALUE OF HINDSIGHT Brian Hayward bought Secret’s dam, and Vince says Brian has often told him since that if he knew that day what he knew now, he would have not stopped until he had secured both cows for himself.

As it was, Secret instead became a special buy for Brookview. She shifted properties with the family seven times, she operated in the top 10% of the herd’s production cows, and she loved giving them heifers. She was 17 years old when they put her to rest and she is buried in the garden at their Tokoroa home. She was classified EX as a five, seven, nine, 11, 13 and 15-year-old [she reared calves her final year]. Her dam, Craigmyle Regal Secrecy, was classified EX5.

“She was a bossy cow,” Vince said. “I remember when she calved as a four-year-old we had another cow that was bossy as well. I put Secret in the herd that day, and when I went down to shut the cows in they were fighting…and by night, they were still fighting. Milking that night was a nightmare and it took them two days to sort out who was going to be boss. Secret won. She had attitude.”

“When you walk through the herd, you’d struggle to find cows that haven’t got the Secret family represented somewhere in their pedigree.”

HARD TO LET GO This is a family that has also excelled in the show ring. Brookview Secrecy On Par (a granddaughter to Grand Secret) was Supreme Ayrshire at the second New Zealand Dairy Event in 2010. Her dam was Tubs, and the granddam is Grand Secret herself. Vince says Secrecy on Par is the best cow he has bred, and her son (born from an embryo), Rosemoor Spark, is the current No. 1 active Ayrshire sire for milk in New Zealand.

“Lot 1 [Yank BK Secret] is a great granddaughter to Secrecy On Par, and she’ll be hard to let go,” Vince said.

“When we selected the sale heifers, we chose her before we found out who she was. And, I’ll be the first to admit that I did feel a little sad when we pulled up her pedigree.”

We can’t start this sale with any better. This heifer matches her pedigree. It is chock-full of EX members from the heart of our Secret family. Her granddam is a full sister to Rosemoor Spark, and her third dam, Secrecy On Par, is the best cow I’ve bred (who is also one of five EX full sisters).

Secrecy On Par was Supreme Ayrshire and Best Udder Ayrshire at the 2010 NZDE. Yank BK Secret is a terrifically wide-rumped, capacious heifer.

VENTURING OUT ON A “MISERABLE NIGHT” TO FIND A GREAT COW

By Dianna Malcolm It was a dark, rainy night in June 2003 when Vince Steiner decided to drive to a Holstein sale in Cambridge to chase the kind of black and white he thought he could love.

He said he had been under some pressure to have a crack at breeding Holsteins, and it was the Blackrose family that inspired him to dip his toe in the water.

As he drove, he remembers wondering if the width he saw in a photo of Stookey Elm Park Blackrose-ET*RC EX96-3E GMD DOM was really worth the “miserable drive”, just to bid on a pregnancy.

However, his gut feeling would be validated on more than one level. He did buy the pick of a flush that night for $4500. The calf was sired by Semex’s Millionaire sire, Comestar Lheros and the dam was Ladino Talent’s full sister, Shoremar Can S Rose-ETRD EX. There were eight confirmed pregnancies [and eventually three heifers] whose pedigrees tracked back to the calves’ fourth dam – Blackrose – the EX96-3E 1995 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair Grand Champion.

two heifer calves. One was white and the other one was dark like Rose, and I said, ‘that’s the one I want’. I wanted her because she was the most like her dam, and her granddam.”

A Legacy is Born

CLOVER-LANE ROSIE LO-ET would go on to classify EX3, deliver heifer after heifer, while shifting properties five times during her career, and establishing a world-class family at Brookview.

Today, aged 15 years, she enjoys her retirement at Duncan’s lifestyle block in Hamilton.

And, her legacy at Brookview continues. Three of her four Shottle daughters, a Dundee and a Roy daughter are all classified EX. Two young in-milk L’Authority daughters are headed that way. A Seaver daughter from one of the Shottles placed second in the four-year-old class at the Waikato Show this year.

“WHO IS HE?”

FIVE BLACKROSE DESCENDANTS SELL

Fairview Holsteins and Clover-Lane Holsteins, who offered the pick of the pregnancies, had no idea who Vince Steiner was.

So, it is no surprise that five Rose descendants will be offered in this sale – giving someone else the opportunity to cash in on the family’s ability to leave heifers, flush, go in-calf, and survive.

Clover-Lane’s Duncan Pipe said, “When we found out it was an Ayrshire breeder who had bought the pregnancy, we thought, ‘There’s no way he’ll pick the best one’.

“But…he did.”

Vince flew to the South Island and travelled between Fairview and Clover-Lane to make his choice.

“Although I didn’t take the heifer at Trounces (Fairview), I did go through the herd that day while I was there and they had a heap of young cows sired by Talent’s full brother. I really liked those cows, so that made me happy,” Vince said.

“I then drove back up to Duncan’s, and he had

HINDSIGHT CAN PUT YOU AHEAD OF THE CURVE Vince said this family strikes to the heart of what drives Brookview’s offering – the advantage 20/20 vision.

“I’m picking a quarter of our Holsteins come down from that foundation cow,” Vince said. “And, we’ve used a couple of bulls over our heifers, and kept those calves as well.

We open the Holstein section of our sale with one of our best. This silky black two-year-old was 6th two-year-old in the Semex On-Farm Competition (Waikato) in an extremely competitive class. Rosa Must has six generations of EX on her bottom line - she went in-calf in the first week of joining - and she’s due to Doorman in the first week of August. You can’t go wrong with this family.

It’s so hard to split these two exciting heifers from two great cows. I don’t think I can say much more than what the pedigrees already do. Darlingo was a sire who wasn’t coming to NZ, until we and another breeder followed him. He was a Doorman from DH Gold Chip Darling EX94, the former Intermediate Champion three-year-old from the Swiss Expo who went on to win Grand Champion in 2017.

After she won as an intermediate, we hunted down her son. The Darlingo is doubly bred to Shottle and Goldwyn. They are both potential seventh generation EX, and part of our history. Make one of them your future.

However, we wish to advise that this is a farm run under normal management conditions and certain dangers exist in relation to livestock and their environment. Visitors should take all care to ensure their personal safety and children must be supervised at all times.

CONDITIONS OF SALE FEMALE GUARANTEE: Every female shown as bred on a certain date, except any which may have been served within six weeks of the sale, is guaranteed in-calf. Every female where shown as pastured with a bull is guaranteed in-calf. This guarantee expires five weeks from day of sale.

Where this catalogue specifies an expected calving date (other than a pastured with bull expected calving date), and that date later proves to be completely inaccurate, the Vendor shall refund 25% of the purchase price direct to the Purchaser. As a basis of arbitration a period of fourteen days either side of specified calving date shall constitute the maximum tolerance allowed for calving. The 25% refund shall not apply where pastured with bull details and dates are printed in this catalogue, unless it is specifically stated that the specified calving date guarantee is to apply.

The foregoing conditions shall apply only after the following guarantees: 1. Where a veterinary certificate is supplied at the date of sale certifying the female as being in-calf, no further liability will fall on the Vendor subject always to liability under other clauses contained in the Conditions of Sale and the Special Conditions of Sale. The purchaser has the right to retest at his or her own expense before delivery is made from the place of sale.

2. Where a female is offered for sale as being in-calf, without a supporting Veterinary Certificate and the female is subsequently proved to be empty the Purchaser has the right to return the female to the Vendor or carry out such disposal as the Vendor may instruct and the Vendor will refund to the Purchaser the purchase price plus the transport costs only.

3. Mummified Calf: Where any female sold as being in calf proves to be carrying a mummified calf, no responsibility is to be born by the Vendor.

4. Yearling Heifer Guarantee: a) Yearling Heifers sold as unmated, are sold with the guarantee to breed. The term to breed shall constitute to produce a calf, dead or alive. Should the heifer fail to produce a calf by 31 December 2018, the Vendor shall refund in full the purchase price. b) Where a yearling heifer is sold as unmated, this constitutes a guarantee that the heifer is not in-calf as at the date of sale. c) The use of MOET or IVP reproductive techniques on a female after purchase completely negates the breeding warranty.

Any complaint to the Auctioneers must be accompanied by a Veterinary Certificate; word of mouth will not be sufficient proof.

DELIVERY: All purchases, as is customary, will be at BUYER’S RISK FROM FALL OF THE HAMMER. INSURANCE: If Transit or Annual Insurance is required, such cover can be arranged through the Auctioneers on application.

INSTRUCTIONS: Purchasers are asked to sign dockets before leaving the sale and to leave full and explicit transport instructions.

TRANSFERS: Vendors are responsible for completion of all transfers. No purchaser shall be entitled to withhold payment for pedigree stock pending execution of delivery by the Vendor of the transfer of the same, registerable in the Stud Book.

COMMISSIONS: If it is not possible to be present, the Company’s Stud Stock Specialists who are thoroughly conversant with the offering will be glad to make selections or bid on specified lots according to instructions.

TERMS: Payment by 10 days following date of sale.

OTHER CONDITIONS: The sale is also subject to the general conditions of sale displayed at the sale.
