21 APRIL 2025

Message from the Head of Prep

Welcome back! We had an incredibly busy end to the last term with, amongst other things, the Year 4 Woking theatre trip and the Year 5 Roman Day, so I hope that you were all able to enjoy some rest over the Easter break.

It was with sadness that we learned of the passing of Pope Francis on Easter Monday. His funeral is due to take place tomorrow morning and we will then wait for the Papal Conclave to commence to decide the next leader of the Catholic Church.

Well done to the Under 9 D team, Under 10 A and B teams, and the Under 11 C and D teams for going through the hockey season undefeated. The bar has been set high as we now swing into cricket season.

Good luck to everyone who entered the British Science Week poster competition. There were some highly creative entries and it was lovely to recognise their efforts in our last assembly. We will keep our fingers crossed that they enjoy further success in the national competition.

Mr Heaver

Year 5 Roman Workshop

On Friday 28th March, Year 5 had a Roman workshop in the gym. The historian started the talk with an explanation on the expansion of the Roman Empire throughout the Mediterranean and Europe. This included the invasion of Britain by Julius Caesar and on the subsequent invasion by Claudius. We then played some Roman style games; some of which are still played today even though they are modernised.

After lunch, the historian came in wearing full Roman battle armour and explained to us the different types and their Latin names. We then had fun firing foam javelins from behind a bench at the specialist who was holding a shield. He concluded the workshop by talking about the courageous rebellion led by Boudicca against Roman rule in Britannia.

Year 2’s World War Two Projects

Year 2 loved sharing their World War Two projects they had enjoyed completing over the Easter holidays.

They chose special people from their family or people that interested them and presented what they had achieved during World War Two. We celebrated their bravery and resilience. We have learnt so much from each other and it was a fabulous introduction to our topic.

Mrs Stefano and Mrs Carpenter

Year 1 at Forest School

Year 1 were happy to go back to Forest School after the Easter holidays. They made dream catchers, they looked for flowers and they had lots of fun exploring the environment.

This Week

A Reading from the Gospel of Luke

On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright, the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ” Then they remembered his words.

Reflection

This week we will certainly have in our thoughts and prayers Pope Francis who passed away peacefully on Monday 21st April. Over the coming weekend, the world will gather in Rome to say farewell to this beloved Pope who spoke often of the mercy and love of God. As Christians, we are called to be people of the Resurrection and just as Christ overcame death we too can be confident of a world beyond this one. Let us pray for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis, and remember the wonderful things he did, said and wrote.

Prayers

We pray for the soul of Pope Francis. We thank God for his life of service and place him into the hands of the merciful father. May he be comforted and rest in the peace of your love.

We pray also for the soul of Sister Carmel who passed away over the Easter holidays. May the spirit of God who rose Christ from the grave also rise Sister Carmel to new life in heaven.

We pray for all within our school community, as we embark on a new term. May we grow closer to the risen Lord and feel His presence more and more in our lives. Lord Jesus, give us the strength to meet the various challenges we will encounter and help us to find the joy of your resurrection in unexpected places and people.
