While Upper Prep were pre-occupied with revision and study, our Lower Prep have been making the most of this good spell of weather with some exciting activities. Our Under 8 cricketers went to the Shrewsbury House Tournament and won five out of five matches. Year 2’s Evacuee Day allowed them to travel through time to try to experience what it was like for children during the Second World War. Reception pupils have been looking to the future, composing some wonderful space-themed stories. They have produced some stunning work and can feel very proud of the progress they have made with their writing this year. Year 3 had a day in the sunshine as part of a special Forest School joint event with Manor House. They were even able to try fried nettles as a snack!
The Lower Prep and Upper Prep School Councils met this week and put forward some great ideas for making our school an even more special place. As always, there were plenty of suggestions for our catering team, although no nettle-based dishes featured.
Even with the summer assessment window around the corner, many of our children have dedicated their spare time to submitting entries into the Rotary Competitions for Art, Photography and Writing. They should all be commended for their
Cranmore Live
This year's Cranmore Live featured the superb and magical voices of the award-winning vocal ensemble, The Gesualdo Six
Forty-two choristers from Cranmore and St Teresa's attended afternoon workshops led by Owain Park and then sang alongside The Gesualdo Six in the evening concert. To say that the sounds coming from the Auditorium that evening were angelic would be an understatement and I am sure that this will be an event that will linger in many a mind for years to come.
My thanks to The Gesualdo Six for their brilliance, professionalism and kindness shown to the pupils.
Rotary Writing Competition: ‘Wonderful Water’
Following Cranmore's tremendous success in last year's competition, thirty-seven highly imaginative and expressive entries were submitted this year from boys in Years 4 to 8. The title 'Wonderful Water' was imaginatively approached with stories and poems involving sea-based dramas, desert oases and environmental reflections.
I am delighted to report that seven entrants received "Highly Commended" certificates for their entries: Jamie T and Colin C in Year 8; Max C, Seb K and Will C in Year 6; Xander W in Year 5; and Perry R in Year 4.
Competition was fierce this year, but the judges' comments on each of these boys' work expressed genuine admiration in their approach to the competition and their writing styles: 'gripping', 'full of vitality', 'a delightful read', 'a full book in the making', 'we were truly transported'.
We are very proud of the students' successes, and congratulate all entrants on their efforts.
Rotary Young Art and Young Photographer: ‘Wonderful Water’
Thirteen entries were submitted this year from Cranmore for this highly competitive creative invitation across two age categories. Both myself and the judges were thrilled to receive so many imaginative and skilfully executed compositions including ships captured in rocky waters, seaside holidays, and the magic of water behaviour.
I am delighted to report that Lutxo H and Perry R received a ‘Highly Commended’ for their stunning work, with comments from the judges such as, 'I like how you have used the pencil marks to create different textures', and 'I love how you have portrayed the sea all frothy'.
I am even more excited to report that Luke H won First Prize for his excellent photograph of water droplets resting on a plant. Luke's photograph will go on to the District for the next round of judging.
We are immensely proud of the students for their successes and congratulate all the entrants for their submissions.

Year 3 Forest School Event with Manor House
Year 3 enjoyed a special Forest School joint event with Manor House this Thursday. We took the theme of Natural Art and explored several ways of using natural materials to show our creative skills. The children decorated their initials with petals, leaves and other colourful items. They made nature frames shaped as rectangles or triangles and filled them with items found around Forest School. They pounded petals and leaves to release the natural dyes and also made a bird’s nest from a paper plate decorated with twigs and feathers.
The children were then treated to fried nettles as part of their Forest School snack. The children thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with the Manor House girls and expressing their creative ideas using items from the natural environment.

Year 2 Bocketts Farm Trip
Year 2 had a wonderful time at Bocketts Farm. They had a tractor ride touring the whole of the farm. It was such a clear day we could see London. We loved stroking the animals during a small animal encounters session, met lots of the larger animals and their babies as well as learning more about horses and how to look after them. After a delicious lunch we loved the pig racing and ended the day exploring the wonderful outside play areas.

Evacuee Day in Year 2
Year 2 learnt all about life as an evacuee child during their special ‘Evacuee Day’.
We were evacuated from our classrooms and had to join a new class with new children and a new teacher. It was important that we wore a label with our name so the people collecting us knew who we were. We had to bring in a small suitcase with a gas mask, our ration book and our favourite toy.
First, we lined up outside waiting to find out what class we were in. After that, we shared what we had brought with us. During the day we got to know each other by playing a variety of games; noughts and crosses, marbles, train sets, dominoes and chess. We had a go at seeing who could spin a topper for the longest and how many times we could make the yoyo go up and down.
We learnt some dances to cheer us up like the jitterbug and tango. We learnt about how toys could be made at home and made our own by learning to sew. We sang songs about the war and had some rationed foods including corned beef, tinned fruit and bread with a very tiny spread of butter.

Reception News
This week, RIH and RLP have been working exceptionally hard on their space-themed stories. These stories represent the children’s first ever written compositions, and they have shown great dedication in practising their cursive handwriting while applying their phonics skills to spell words. Both Miss Hurl and Mrs Prothero were very impressed with the children’s enthusiasm and creativity reflected in their work. A fantastic effort all round!
Weather in Year 4 French
As part of their topic on the weather, Year 4 have been preparing and presenting their own bulletins météo (weather reports) in French. They combined weather phrases with compass points to describe the weather in different parts of France.

U8s Cricket at Shrewsbury House Tournament
On Friday 16th May, 6 boys from Year 3 represented the school in the Shrewsbury House Slam. This is an annual 6-a-side cricket tournament in which the boys played 5 matches in a round robin format. The boys had a fantastic afternoon and represented the school brilliantly. I'm pleased to report that Cranmore finished the day with 5 wins out of 5! The future of Cranmore cricket is bright!

‘My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
I give them eternal life; they will never be lost and no one will ever steal them from me.
The Father who gave them to me is greater than anyone, and no one can steal from the Father. The Father and I are one.’
Reflection
Pope Leo XIV’s motto: In Illo uno unum” (“In the one Christ we are one”), recalls the words of Saint Augustine in a sermon, the Exposition on Psalm 128, explaining that “in the one Christ we are one”. The image of the pierced heart on his Coat of Arms speaks of the heart that is pierced with God’s love. Pope Leo XIV has continued to call for the Church to be united to Christ and to one another. In this way we will be a sign for the world.
Prayer
Faithful God,
You guide us on the path of life and your goodness is our constant companion.
Be with our new Shepherd, Pope Leo XIV, in his service of the Church. Fill him with the power of your Spirit, the peace of your presence and the compassion of Christ.
Amen
