Message from the Head of Prep

Across the year groups, we have been marking Values Week. The children have taken part in numerous activities and events to celebrate the importance of this year’s value: Community. They have spent time with each other, building the bonds of friendship and belonging that are the foundation stones of community.

Year 5 had an active start to the week with a wonderful class assembly about the importance of helping others followed by a countryside walk in the Surrey Hills. Year 3 had a fantastic time on Tuesday for their Viking Day with some incredible costumes on display. On Thursday Year 6 were joined by the girls from Manor House and St Teresa’s for a visit by the Onatti Theatre group to support their work in French. Next week, it will be their turn to take to the stage with their performance of Shrek. Year 4 pupils have been incredibly busy with team building sessions run by Wise Up and a trip to Hampton Court Palace. On Thursday, we had the pleasure of hosting a celebration in our Chapel for those children who have made their First Holy Communion this year. It was a wonderful moment to mark this step in their faith journeys and to be able to welcome families from Manor House and St Teresa’s made it even more special. Well done to our Lower Prep children for the thoughtful messages they have shared with staff to say thank you for the part they play in being valued members of our school community.

Cricket and tennis fixtures continue aplenty and there has been recent success in the pool and on the track. Next week, we have Sports Days to look forward to for all year groups. Please remember during this hot spell of weather to send your children to school with named water bottles, sun hats and sun cream. Good luck to our cricketers as they take on Donhead tomorrow.

Year 4 Team Building Day

On Tuesday, Year 4 pupils enjoyed a dynamic and engaging team building day out on the Henderson Field. The day’s task was a collaborative mystery-solving activity: The Case of Kevin the Kidnapped Llama.

Working in small groups, the boys tackled a series of puzzles and challenges, each one bringing them closer to uncovering vital clues and solving the mystery. Throughout the day, they demonstrated impressive teamwork, communication, and critical thinking skills.

This exciting event was designed to reinforce and develop our core value for the year: Community. As part of the experience, the boys took time to reflect on the qualities and behaviours that contribute to a strong, supportive team. Their thoughtful insights and enthusiastic participation made for a memorable and meaningful day of learning and fun.

Buzzing with Excitement – Science Club Meets the Beekeepers!

Science Club was positively buzzing last week thanks to a fascinating visit from the Guildford Beekeeping Association. We were delighted to welcome the wonderfully knowledgeable and patient Pauline Lane back to Cranmore, who brought the fascinating world of bees to life for our budding scientists in Years 5 and 6.

With her came a treasure trove of beekeeping equipment – from real beekeeper suits to hive tools and, of course, golden jars of honey for tasting. The boys eagerly donned the protective clothing, peered through mesh veils, and marvelled at the complexity of the hive. Pauline’s passion for beekeeping shone through as she answered our many questions with calm expertise. We also learnt about the threats posed by invasive species such as the Asian hornet, and why protecting our pollinators is more important than ever.

The excitement didn’t stop there. This week Mrs Tolley, our brilliant Science Technician (and proud beekeeper herself!), brought in four frames straight from her own hives - still sticky with honey from the 2025 harvest. Pupils got hands-on as they uncapped the wax, spun the frames in a centrifugal extractor, and watched in amazement as golden streams of honey flowed out. We learnt how centrifugal forces help separate the honey, why water content below 20% is crucial for storage, and even bottled our own jars to take home – a delicious reward!

A huge thank you to Pauline, the Guildford Beekeeping Association, and of course to Mrs Tolley for making this such a memorable experience. Science Club has never been so sticky – or so much fun!

Science club runs every Monday from 4-5pm for Years 5 and 6.

Viking Day in Year 3

The clash of swords and axes on circular shields preceded the arrival of a fearsome hoard of Vikings at Cranmore on Tuesday.

Dressed in their Viking finery, Year 3 pupils handled authentic Viking artefacts and weapons and also learnt how the Viking language has influenced the English language. They learnt how far the Vikings travelled and heard about some of the dangers of sailing long distances in the Viking longships.

Then, they pitted their wits against their fellow Vikings in a traditional Viking board game. They learnt a battle drill, forming an impenetrable shield wall, and performed an impressive battle charge. The spine-chilling battle cries could be heard as far away as the Henderson fields.

The day culminated in a very competitive spear wrestling match followed by an interactive retelling of the Ragnarok saga. The Year 3 Vikings left Cranmore with wonderful memories of a fantastic day, immersed in Viking traditions.

Values Week in Lower Prep

As part of our 'Values Week' all about community, Year 2 continued their thinking about our school community, following Miss Gallop's assembly. They shared all the people they think are important in our school community. We talked about what their roles are and why they are important.

We decided to write thank you cards to show that we value and respect what they do. Every child chose their own special person they wanted to thank and gave it to them. These included the cleaners, chefs, facilities team, the office, nurses, SLT, progress teachers, teachers and teaching assistants. The children felt very proud to give their cards.

Proms in the Paddock

On Friday 13th June, the Lower Prep pupils took part in a special Proms in the Paddock to celebrate our Trust theme of the year ‘Community’. The Nursery and Reception classes performed three inclusive songs The More We Get Together, The Train Song, and Let’s Be Friends promoting connection and support. Year 1 charmed us with You’ve Got a Friend in Me, highlighting friendship despite differences, followed by Funga Alafia, a traditional African song inviting peace and harmony. Year 2 brought optimism with Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds and determination with Eye of the Tiger on recorders, symbolising resilience in community. Year 3 delighted with I Wanna Be Like You from The Jungle Book, Iko Iko and The Lion Sleeps Tonight on ukuleles, celebrating cultural connection and belonging. The Lower Prep Choir moved us with True Colours by Cyndi Lauper, encouraging authenticity and acceptance. The Proms concluded with the uplifting song Together, a perfect tribute to the strength and joy of our Cranmore community, with all pupils performing brilliantly throughout.

Miss Gallop

On Saturday, five pupils represented Cranmore at the English Schools National Championships at the iconic venue, Ponds Forge, in Sheffield. The competition was very strong and comprised the top 20 primary schools in the country. Following a county and a regional round, Cranmore successfully qualified for the National finals. The boys swam exceptionally well, making the 'B' Finals for both events. In the medley relay they finished 14th overall and in the freestyle relay, narrowly missing the 'A' final, they finished 10th, improving on their qualifying times in both events. It was an incredible experience for the swimmers and a great achievement to be part of an amazing event. Well done to all the swimmers (Fabian H, Matthew B, Toby F, Oliver P, Jack T).

We had a great Trust U10s tennis match with St Teresa's on Monday and the U9s played RGS on Tuesday.

Our U11s performed admirably at the Jeff Richards Finals at Trinity on Friday. This was after successfully qualifying through two rounds to reach the big day!

St Teresa's Aquathlon

On Tuesday, pupils from Cranmore participated in an Aquathlon event at St Teresa's. An aquathlon event is a continuous race from a swim event into a cross-country run. Against strong competition with other local schools in attendance, we successfully placed in podium positions across a number of age groups. Well done to all the boys involved in a great event (Fabian H, Matthew B, Titus G, Freddie C, William R, William A, Max T, Monty L, Jacob S, Freddie R, Carlos S, Daniel B).

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

This Week

A Reading from the Book of Proverbs

The Wisdom of God cries aloud:

The Lord created me when his purpose first unfolded, before the oldest of his works. From everlasting I was firmly set, from the beginning, before earth came into being. The deep was not, when I was born, there were no springs to gush with water. Before the mountains were settled, before the hills, I came to birth; before he made the earth, the countryside, or the first grains of the world’s dust. When he fixed the heavens firm, I was there, when he drew a ring on the surface of the deep.

Reflection

Our value for this year across the Trust is Community. To be unified, to live in unity with one another is so very important. God of course is perfect unity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We too bear the image of God. We were made for unity and find our happiness when we are unified one with another. Our Christian journey is therefore a journey towards unity: unity with God and unity with one another. In a world that seems ever more fractured by war, let us be people of unity.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, who prayed that we might all be one, we pray to you for the unity of Christians, according to your will, according to your means. May your Spirit enable us to experience the suffering caused by division, to see our sin and to hope beyond all hope.

Amen
