Guru Bike fit Rider on the DFU

T

he Guru Fit System is a new approach to Bike fitting. Its latest technology, industry-leading fit protocol makes it stand out from all the other bike fit systems and fit theories. The Guru Fit System uses three main parameters ‘Range of Right’, ‘Rider Posture’ and ‘Customer Feedback’ to perform a bike fit. Using the Stateof-of-the-art Guru Dynamic Fit Unit (DFU) and the Range of Right (ROR) system, the Guru Fit specialist will use this technology as well as the Fit Institute Slowtwitch (FIST) training to discover the ideal riding position to maximize comfort and efficiency. What is different in the Guru Fit System is the ability of the machine to remotely alter the bike while the rider is still on the bike pedaling and experiencing noticeable changes in the response and feel of the new adjustments and thus giving live feedback to the fitter. The fit involves a collaborative effort of the fitter and the rider’s real time reaction to the altered positions. The machine can move vertically and horizontally, reposition the saddle and handlebar backward and forward during the fitting process.

FIT PROCESS During the initial stage of the fit, the fitter will gather information from the rider that will aid in optimizing the rider’s overall cycling experience. The interview and discovery stage is an important step in assessing the goals and understanding the training frequency , the routines, and rider’s medical history which are vital information for the fitter to recommend any changes to the rider. The fitter does an initial physical assessment of the rider, and at this point the fitter will begin to address the rider’s concerns about performance, pain or any other issues that one hopes to alleviate during the bike fit. The Guru Fit consist of the following steps in the fitting process: • • • • • • •

Full body measurement with GURU Scan Rider positioning using FIST protocols Up to 5 different position captures for comparison Shoe sizing and cleat placement Saddle assessment and selection options Existing bike calibrated and/or recommendation for new bike Fit summary

DYNAMIC FIT UNIT (DFU) The DFU is the main unit of the Guru Fit System - it acts like the bike of the rider. The DFU is capable of mimicking the rider’s original bike with the coordinates that the fitter has entered in the system. The fitter then starts the process of optimizing the bike fit using the Guru FIST protocol. The DFU also has a ‘Bike Finder’ feature, this feature is capable of doing is that it has a database of all the major bike brands in the world. It will be able to fit you on any bike of the required size and optimize a quick-fit guide for your next new bike.

Fitter Taking Bike Measurements

THE RIGHT OF RANGE (ROR) The Right of Range is a Bicycle Fitting Motion Capture System. Its main function is to capture the real-time data of a rider’s biomechanical data while running on the DFU or on a trainer. The ROR uses a Kinetic Sensor and infrared markers placed on the body to monitor the body movement. There are eight markers placed at specific points on the rider’s body. The system measures biomechanical data at speeds of up to 30 frames per second. The ROR biomechanical ranges for the Knee Angle Extension, Knee Flexion Angle, Ankle Angle Max, Back Angle, Knee-Foot Horizontal Offset, Shoulder to Wrist, Shoulder to Elbow and Elbow Angle. The Guru Fit is bound to become a key consideration when choosing a fit to invest in, and the prioritization of natural biomechanics is reassuring if you are able to banish the traditional preconceptions of a bike setup. ProCycling

to, the various disciplines and the corresponding bikes that we see today, in their current forms, emerged. These are what they are (In their broadest forms):

Cross country (XC) Cross country is a discipline that mixes the endurance of a road cyclist with the technical skill of a mountain biker. Where races are about 30-60 km long with a good mix of technical climbs, flat stretches and rough descents. Races are usually fast paced, and since the races typically happen in laps of the racecourse, XC events are an amazing spectacle. There are also longer races, typically called Marathon XC, races range from one-day epics of 100 kilometers to multi-day stage races like the Absa Cape Epic. Bikes are usually hardtails (bikes with suspension only on the front), although full-suspension models have started to creep into the mix in the last few years, they usually have between 80-120 millimeters of suspension.

The Anthology of Shred

A

ah mountain biking, our drug. The rush that can only be had when bombing a hill with nothing but two patches of rubber keeping your face off the ground, the euphoria of summiting that climb that almost made you bonk, the thrill of hitting a lip that sends you flying. As to why we put life and limb at risk for these thrills is not a question I can possibly answer, I don’t think any of us really know the answer to the question we probably get asked most often, why? But what I can tell you is this, it puts a smile the size of Texas on my face, and that is more than enough to keep me coming back for more. ountain biking is a very broad umbrella of a sport, with everything M from climbing a fire road, to shooting down the side of a mountain in Leh, at what feels like the speed of sound, all fall under this umbrella of mountain biking. So these radically different aspects of mountain biking do need radically different bikes. Sure, you can ride up a fire road with a Downhill bike with 8 inches of suspension, but will it be a pleasant experience? Unless you like the of feeling intense pain. Probably not. In today’s age of almost space-age bike design, the way I see it, the purpose of the bike you ride, is to make you forget about the bike itself and be engulfed solely in the experience of mountain biking. One shouldn’t have to worry about one’s bike, and question whether or not the bike they are riding is even the right bike. ince the inception of the sport, different people gravitated to S different aspects. For some, the mountain bike was a way to get out into the woods and spend days on end exploring, for others it was to find the steepest rockiest slope they could and ride down it as fast as possible while still managing to keep the bike between their legs. And every conceivable type in between. As time progressed and technology advanced, riders started to demand bikes that fit their style of riding, and companies obliged. And once they began

CRANK with ProCycle SEPTEMBER 15TH, 2017

Enduro Enduro is a relatively new discipline, with it being a competitive sport at least. But to most mountain bikers it is what they usually ride. Enduro is essentially the discipline that best combines the different types of mountain biking, with almost XC like climbs and DH like descents, it is the greatest common denominator. Which is a very big draw to the sport. Bikes need to, like the discipline, be the best all-around bike, bikes that can ‘Climb like an XC bike and descend like a DH bike’. Bikes are usually full suspension with 140170 millimeters of suspension.

Downhill (DH) Downhill is exactly what the name suggests, riding down steep rough courses. Downhill runs are typically not too long, usually under 15 minutes, with race runs being between 3-7 minutes long. This discipline is highly technical with riders needing to be quite skilled. DH riders typically never ride up hills, they are usually shuttled up or walk up. DH bikes are always full-suspension with 8 inches (200 millimeters) of travel. There is a sub-discipline of DH called freeride. This is a very Motocross inspired discipline with big jumps and tricks, with competitions being judged and not timed, much like what one would see at RedBull Rampage. The aim of freeride is not be the fastest, but to be the most stylish. Tricks like 360s, backflips, whips, etc. are quite common in the sport.

Your Race Bucket List- Mountain Bike

C

RANK brings to you a new series, that showcase races that we feel every rider could aspire to race. We shall endeavor to bring to you a flavor across the disciplines to help you create your own bucket list of races.

Bike Transalp - European Alps It’s exciting, it’s competitive and the vistas are breathtaking! Riding along with about 1200 teams from every corner of the globe, Transalp is said to be the biggest, one of the oldest and toughest races in the world. The race travels 650kms with an elevation gain of 17,000m through 3 countries. Last year, India made its maiden participation in the 20-year history of the race with Hero Action team sponsored by Hero Cycles joining in the race. Single Track 6 - Canadian Rockies Formally known as the Transrockies Challenge, this UCI recognized race attracts Olympians, national champions and amateurs alike. Six days and six stages of riding in the mountains of western Canada have a perfect blend of panoramic views and epic descents.

Hero MTB Himalaya - Indian Himalayas The race will be celebrating its 13th anniversary this year in September. Around 100 participants from more than 15 countries participate in this 8 stage extravaganza in the foothills of Indian Himalayas. Most seasoned professionals accept that they have never done anything like this before! A true Indian jewel in the world’s MTB crown Absa Cape Epic - South Africa Organized in the Western Cape of South Africa, this race covers 700kms over 8 days of riding. The race route changes every year and witnesses’ participants from 600 teams. Pedaling in the desert with soaring mercury is a Herculean task in itself! La Ruta- Costa Rica Considered the most loved, feared and respected race in the world, the La Ruta is a multi-stage race which is a 3-day extravaganza takes riders through tropical forests, volcanoes, banana plantations and farm towns. The race needs it all: riding skills, physical endurance and mental strength.

Rajakumar Harodoss

India at LEL

L

ondon Edinburgh London (LEL) is one of the world’s most famous long distance cycling events, happens once every four years. Riders have to ride from London to Edinburgh and back in under five days. The route is scenic and also challenging with minimal traffic. This ride provides excellent support, but only at control points with facilities for bathing, sleeping and a variety of food. Although there are no specific requirements or any sort of qualification procedure, the route itself is hard, and to so much as finish the route, one needs to be quite fit.

“Apart from fitness adapting to English summer is an another challenge which is notorious for it’s erratic swing from hot and humid to freezing cold in a 24-hour cycle. While hot weather wouldn’t be an issue for people from the tropics, tackling cold weather was a challenge and I used to take ice bath thrice a week. The first few seconds were suicidal, however it was this routine that paid huge dividends during the cold night ride, especially during the south-bound Yad Moss climbing section towards Barnad Castle. Most of our Indian riders quit during this section.”

So far India has only one finisher from all the previous editions. This year, approximately 55 riders from India started the ride. The registration normally happens through a lottery system and gets filled very fast, normally within the first 2-3 hours.

LEL and PBP

There is a massive amount of elevation gain for this challenge, a lot of it in cold weather conditions. Conditions that many Indians are not accustomed to. Countries that participated in this edition of the LEL are close to 58. “I am at UK for a short-term project through my company until Oct 2017, Hence I thought this is the best opportunity to do LEL without having to undergo separate expenses on VISA and travel” says Rajagopal Harodoss one successful finisher. “I guess among all the participants I would have put the least time on saddle, having done under 2000kms in the last 6 months towards the run up to the event. However, there was considerable amount of time towards core and functional fitness. If I recollect correctly, the reason for anyone to DnF a Brevet will not be lack of stamina but pain around knee, lower back, cramped muscles, stiff calf thighs. Through my training I tried to address these issues as I was confident with my ability to sit on the saddle.”

14

CRANK with ProCycle SEPTEMBER 15TH, 2017

The LEL is often compared to PBP (Paris Brest Paris). The general consensus amongst finishers of both is that the LEL is more challenging. Self-supported: This event is self-supported, no crew is allowed, that means one needs to plan well Start times: There are various time slots to choose from, with some obvious preferred slots, that impact performance, so be smart. Food and Sleep: Only at controls, and since most of the route is rather desolate, one needs to be smart at negotiating the food counters at the controls. It is advisable for Indians to get used to English food. Pack Correct: Packing right and taking the right clothing is just as important as your training and your bike. Do not overload on winter apparel, layers are recommended.

his year’s Tour de France lived up to all that is to be expected, filled with breathtaking climbs, amazing sprint finishes and gripping time trials. Coming into the race the clear favorite was Team Sky’s Chris Froome (no surprises there), with other riders like Rigoberto Uran, Fabio Aru, Richie Porte, Nairo Quintana, Romain Bardet, Alberto Contador, and many more riders also thrown into the mix, slated to win the General Classification. he first stage of the race was taken by Sky’s Geraint Thomas, with T Froome finishing the best of the pre-race favorites. On stage 5, after a painful looking summit finish, Froome took the over leaders spot and the yellow jersey. He held onto the number one spot until stage 12, when Aru snatched the spot away from him on the grueling climb up the Peyragudes. Froome however took it back on stage 14 and held onto it all the way to the finish. The Green Jersey (the best sprinter) was taken by Sunweb’s Michael Matthews. The Polka dot Jersey (best climber) was taken by Sunweb’s Warren Barguil. The White Jersey (best young rider) was taken by Orica-SCOTT’s Simon Yates. Team Sky won the best team.

Fun Custom Bikes Built from scratch and based on the Minion concept from the movie Despicable me. Faisal worked with researchers of IIT, Bombay to customize a bike that they had sketched. It is a parent and child concept, where the parent is riding and the child is sitting completely safe within the frame. In the year 2015 they customized eight beach bikes and 16 street bikes for Mumbai police constables.

B

ikes are not always about performance, it isn’t always about the lightest, the stiffest or the fastest bike. For a lot of us bikes are simply a way to have some fun, and for some, bikes are a medium to express their creativity. For almost as long as bikes have existed, there have been people making some crazy custom bikes. Like tall bikes, where two bike frames are stacked on top of each other and welded together to make a, well, tall bike. In this issue CRANK caught up with two companies in India that do just that. They let imagination take the reins when designing their bikes. From designing a bike around the character of the Minions from the movie Despicable Me, to a bike that is called the moonbike and requires two riders. Their mantra is, you dream it up, we build it up. Pro9 Bicycle Studio are a company in Mumbai that build custom bikes. While they do not manufacture their own components yet, they plan on soon being able to manufacture their own components with an emphasis on quality and they want to be able to avail their customers a variety of colours.

According to Faisal, who manages the show at Pro9 Bicycle studio “Every individual is different. Even between two people of the same height, they may differ in weight. So we have a simple formula of customizing a bike according to height, weight, age, usage and budget. Evo Bikes, is another such manufacturer of custom bikes in Mumbai. Started in 2011 by Inderjeet Khamba, custom designs and manufacture parts for a smooth ride on your bike. After a 12-year stint as an IT Professional Inderjeet took a break and started cycling. Dissatisfied with the services of repair shops, he started working on his own cycle and soon became popular

amongst friends and family and started helping them out as well. Later he started painting and customizing bikes. Evo bikes customize all types of bikes like Elliptical cycles, recumbents, Folding bikes, Road racing bikes, Mountain bikes and many more for all category and age group of riders. He is now joined by Jaswant Singh Khamba with an immence amount of experience in fabrication, bringing to the company a wealth of technical knowledge. To ensure proper quality control, they make sure to stress test the bikes at every step of the process. Although showcased here are some fun bikes, both Pro9 and Evo do also make some serious Race bikes.

Santa Cruz bikes Pic Courtesy @ Santa Cruz Bicycles Santa Cruz bikes is one of those brands with an almost larger than life persona. With riders on board that embody what it means to be a mountain biker. From the racer to the crazy freerider, Santa Cruz appeals to them all. One of my favorite riders has been with the Santa Cruz Syndicate for as long as I can remember, and to me, he is what it should mean to be a mountain biker, yes the race results matter, but that is not why we ride, Ratboy reminds you, especially in the tense world of DH world cup racing, that we ride our bikes simply because we love riding our bikes, and not just for the win. The bikes are amazing, no doubt about it, the VPP (Virtual Pivot Platform) platform was way ahead of its time when it launched. But this is one of those brands whose appeal goes beyond their bikes, there is this ineffable aura about the brand that just screams cool. The image they have is thus; to truly be a hard-core rider, you need to own a Santa Cruz.

he Malabar River Festival was held from the 20th to 23rdof July, 2017. The festival revolves around white water kayaking, a sport that requires the participants to sit in a canoe-like boat in which the paddler sits facing forward, legs in front, using a double-bladed paddle. Most kayaks have closed decks, although sit-ontop and inflatable kayaks are growing in popularity as well. The event saw participants from Karnataka, Delhi, Ooty and a few other parts of India.Participants flew in from other parts of the globe, like New Zealand, Australia and The United Kingdom. Rains being unpredictable, saw high water levels, which in turn increased the difficulty level, as the routes kept changing. The first day was held at the Kutiyadi River, almost an hour away fromKodenchery, which witnessed the freestyle race. Athletes got to compete in smaller kayaks called playboats, and impress the audience with stunts and fancy moves like spins, loops and cartwheels The Slalom race was held on day two at the Chali River near Pulikayam. The race haskayakers racing through different gates set in the river, with green gatesindicating the kayaker to row downstream, and red gates upstream. A kayaker loses points if he/she touches, hits or misses a pole. Going down

stream is always easier than rowing upstream, against the current. The marathon and the downriver race was held at the Malabar pool section on the third day. Being the third day of the festival, the kayakers were quite exhausted but driven to race. The Marathon was a five kilometre stretch, with all kinds of class 2 and class 3 rapids (Class 1 being the easiest and Class 6 being the most difficult). A couple of Kayakers had to swim too. A swim is when a Kayaker topples and is unable to roll up, and ejects himself from the boat and has to swim his way to safety. The intermediate level of the boater cross race was held on the last day. Four kayakers were dropped off a wooden ramp into the river and they raced till the finish line. The race was followed by the prize distribution and the festival concluded by crowning the Rapid Raja- Will Hand and Rapid RaniGulliaZagnoni. There were over 3 thousand people who came to show their support and over 55 participants at the festival. The event was organised by Goodwave adventures, and sponsored by Woodland and the Kerala Tourism Department. Article by:Simi Jassal Photos by: Praveen Jayakaran

also the people riding with you. Thanks to live heart rate monitors, training in a particular zone becomes very easy, as we tend to push ourselves without understanding our body’s threshold. The trainer comes into play now as he constantly monitors and helps you adapt to get the perfect workout. Thanks to the flexibility of the workout, this can be done at any time of the day helping busy people across the world to fit their workout along their already tight schedule.

Introduction to Spinning 1. Why it is required Spinning is a low-impact form of training which is a unique among all other cardiovascular training activities.Since it is low-impact, it is an ideal activity for everyone – runners as cross-training to work the slow-twitch muscles, weight trainers as a great cardio, outdoor cyclists as a resistance ride and for all want to be fit folks as a great cardio. In a spinning session, one can burn around 400650 calories in 45 minutes. Riding in a group with curated music and under the guidance of a trainer can be great fun. The biggest benefit of spinning is the massive improvement in metabolism. Every day you get more active and can clearly see the difference in the overall mood during the day. Spinning releases Endorphins (Happy hormones) in your body whilst burning calories. Endorphins keep you happy, preventing you from gorging on sweets and snacks.Spinning also aids in safe weight loss and helps you tone your muscles. 2. How different it is from conventional cycling Spinning is a low impact high intensity activity. Unlike conventional cycling the spin bikes are fitted with a flywheel rather than a freewheel, meaning that it would be similar to riding on a fixie. So when you stop pedalling on a spin bike, the pedals keep spinning (hence the name). Due to the nature of the intensity of spinning, it does not require too much investment of time to get results, a typical spinning session is about 45 minutes. When spinning as a group you are constantly motivated by a dedicated trainer and

3. How it can aid in training for cycling races and events

Races keep getting harder, and to be competitive, one needs to be able to train both to a plan and properly. Out on the roads, the ever-increasing traffic and attitude of motorists towards cyclists makes quality training difficult on a day to day basis. Other than traffic playing chaos, road hazards (Potholes, debris and broken tarmac) do not fit well if you are to include interval training routines. Training indoors on a Spin bike facilitates, structured, progressive and high quality training without the rider having to lose focus on the training looking out for hazards and traffic as in the open roads. It enables the rider to be virtually teleported to any terrain or road of choice with minor adjustments to the bike set up. The variables in a racing situation (wind, gradient and heat) can be cloned and training can be modelled around specific controllable parameters to match to the real-world conditions thereby exponentially increasing performance. 4. Anything else specific to spinning Rapidly gaining popularity amongst women, celebrities and students, spinning brings the best of both music and an awesome workout together. Smart devices such as heart rate monitors help track your effort and the energy you are exerting. You get to compare your efforts and also keep track of your heart and how it has improved over the course of time. At the end of the day training with heart rate helps you to understand how far you can push yourself every time to get the best out of your workout. Article by : Michel Socratis and Deepak Samuel
