P

ro-cycling in India is fast catching up with the rest of its contemporaries around the world. After a hard battle, the Men’s Indian Junior team has made it to the top. The UCI world rankings were recently published and the results have been more than exemplary. The team has performed with superlative skill, ranking first in the team sprint category and in the top ten in other international events. Our women’s junior team has also been exceptional, having secured spots in the UCI top ten. Deborah Herold continues to shine by ranking 6th in the time trial. This achievement is encouraging for the Cycling Federation of India as it is a direct result of their training programmes, which started two years ago. The program works by inducting cyclists in the age group of 14-16 into the SAI National Cycling Academy. The academy is jointly run by the CFI and SAI. The inductees are trained with latest scientific methods and supported by the World Cycling Centre – Satellite India by a team of highly specialized coaches. The results of this training program is evident, in terms of medals at various International events and the World ranking of the Indian cyclists. The team and the CFI are now aiming for the 2020 Olympics at Tokyo and hope that their training will pay off! We at Crank, wish them the very best and hope to share their success soon!

HealthWise

Cycle your way to a great heart Dr. Naveen Chandra G.S, Consultant - Interventional Cardiology, Columbia Asia Hospital

C

ycling is a great form of exercise to stay fit. More so, in today’s world where we race against time to include an extra 30 minutes in the routine of our daily exercise sessions. If cycling is your passion then you will also receive the benefit of good health. Recent researches suggest that even pedalling around for just 5 to 10 minutes on a regular basis can help keep your heart healthy. Cycling leads to an overall workout of the heart, blood vessels and lungs. We tend to breathe deeper, perspire and experience increased cardiovascular activity, while cycling, which in turn improves the overall fitness level of the body. Cycling also strengthens the heart muscles, lowers resting pulse and reduces blood fat levels, thus reducing risks of cardiovascular complications. If you cycle on a regular basis, there will be increase in the vagal tone of the body, thus leading to a decrease in the resting heart rate by 5-6 %. Cycling also helps burn fat and increase the muscles content. This is turn helps decrease the risk of developing hypertension, obesity, diabetes and heart diseases. We see around 20-30 patients a week who are suffering from cardiac diseases and hence, the prevention of cardiac diseases is of utmost importance. As recommended by various scientific societies around the world, aerobic exercises are important for at least 30 minutes a day or 150 mins a week. These include jogging, walking, swimming, etc.

14

CRANK with ProCycle SEPTEMBER 15TH, 2016

Cycling can be one of the best substitutes for aerobic exercises mainly because people enjoy doing and it is also little easy on the joints of our body. So Cycling is thus also one of the best way to prevent cardio vascular diseases. Cycling helps in higher supply of oxygen all over the body thus improving cardio vascular capacity (to provide higher oxygen to body parts during exercise), increasing cardio vascular fitness and improving heart efficiency. If you already have a co-morbid health complication cycling can be a good option for you especially if one is diabetic, hypersensitive, hyperlipidemic, obese patient or with family history of cardiac diseases. Regular cycling helps in maintaining heart blood pressure, maintains lipid levels, decreases the chances of getting diabetes thus decreasing cardiac problems in the long term. However, if they have significant heart disease, have multiple heart blocks, underwent angioplasty/bypass or cardiac failure then the patients need to be careful. They need to aviod heavy exercise and curtail their exercise to 20- 30 mins/day. Hiking and too much strenuous cycling are generally not recommended for patients who have very significant coronary artery disease, cardiac failure patients, certain congenital cardiac problems patients and in patients suffering from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, etc. They can have a sudden cardiac failure or worsening in cardiac status on strenuous cycling. For such patients the

recommendation is on case-to-case basis and is individualised. It is important to consult your cardiologist before undertaking long cycling trip that last for a few weeks if you are suffering from any cardiac ailments or if you have any symptoms suggestive of cardiac problems. They will have to get an echocardiogram and other stress tests sometimes to see if cardiac functions can take up so much of stress. Be very careful if a person has already any cardiac complications. In that case avoid strenuous and unsupervised cycling. Sudden onset of chest pain, unusual amount of restlessness, unusual amount of fatigue, giddiness are the symptoms to look out for. If these symptoms occur stop cycling and consult your doctor or cardiologist.

While cycling keep the following points in mind: • Generally people should consider regular cycling to keep themselves and their cardiovascular system fit. • One should consider cycling regularly for 30 minutes a day in 5 days a week to gain the maximum benefit • If one is suffering from any cardiac symptoms or cardiac disease, need to get nod from their doctors before venturing into long trips • Even pedalling around for just 5 to 10 minutes on a regular basis can help keep your heart healthy

The Cannondale SuperSix Evo

T

he Cannondale SuperSix Evo, first introduced in India in mid-2012 has evolved over the years to become lighter, with a stiffer frame, with system integrations that are revolutionary and are also race proven. This innovation has helped the bike win multiple awards and has been tagged amongst the highest rated and desired road-bikes in the world. The Cannondale SuperSix Evo comes in two variants; the top of the line Hi-Modulus Carbon Frame version and the more affordable BallisTec Carbon version. Though only the latter is available in India, it is made along the same lines as the Hi-Modulus series. Cannondale’s intention with the BallisTec carbon was to introduce an intermediate-modulus carbon frame which sought to incorporate the existing features of the Hi-Mod but still weighs only 950g. However, unlike the Hi-Mod this version has an external cable routing. While this may impact the overall look, many pro-riders prefer this as it makes servicing and minute tweaks convenient during a ride The head-tube is tapered with 1-1/4in to 1-1/8in headset bearings. The SuperSix Evo is designed to allow air to pass to a certain degree and reduce drag. It has a much sleeker and a smaller head-tube which tremendously improves the aerodynamics. The SuperSix Evo has an all-carbon fork and steerer tube weighing a total of 315g. The Frame construction consists of four main sections, the headtube, top-tube, down-tube & a single section seat-stay & chainstay; these three sections are then bonded to the seat-tube which

16

CRANK with ProCycle SEPTEMBER 15TH, 2016

comes with a light 27.5mm alloy seat-post. The Evo is so designed to be purely a pro-events bike which means its build carries racing geometry and, a fairly low & aggressive headset stack-up. The 2016 SuperSix Evo is available in two variants; the 3-Series equipped with Shimano’s Ultegra (6800), 11-Speed Compact and the 5-Series equipped with Shimano’s 105 (5800) 11-Speed. The SuperSix boasts a lot of technological features like System Integration (Si) components that are optimized for speed, Speed SAVE, BB30 Bottom Bracket, Cannondale’s BallisTec Carbon construction and more. Cannondale claims to make most path-breaking and cutting edge frames in cycling. The logic behind its concept of System Integration (Si) is that you don’t just race with a frame, but with a complete bike. The System Integration approach to bicycle design is a well thought out idea. Cannondale’s component technologies and frames act as a complete package, each designed specifically for the other. The union between their frames and their Si technologies like Lefty, BB30, HollowGram and the all-new Ai Drivetrain deliver real benefits to the riders such as lighter bikes, stiffer frames, better handling and very fast. In 2000, Cannondale introduced a new type of bottom bracket technology, which saw the oversizing of the bottom bracket shell and replacing the heavy, flexy steel BB spindle with a 30mm aluminum spindle with a unique, stress-reducing wavetaper crank interface. The result was BB30, a system that is not only significantly lighter, but also stiffer than traditional designs.

Cannondale released the design as a free industry standard in 2006 & they can be seen on all mid & high level road bikes. Cannondale’s patented OPI 3D forging process has enabled them to build hollow, seamless crank-arms that are not only extremely light but also incredibly strong and stiff. In fact, they are the stiffest, strongest crank-arms made by them. Lighter and stiffer than Dura Ace and completely compatible with every HollowGram spider and chain-ring set-up. The Synapse Active Vibration Elimination (SAVE) technology was introduced as a way to reduce/eliminate road shock and vibration. By pairing precise tube shapes with sophisticated carbon lay-up or highly manipulated aluminum, Cannondale was able to create areas on the rear chain-stays and seat-stays, fork or seat-post that can deflect to absorb shock, while staying completely rigid laterally and torsionally. The enhanced vertical compliance provided by these combined features greatly improves comfort and performance. The SuperSix Evo is equipped with a Shimano 105 (5800) 11-Speed drivetrain which includes Shimano 105 (11x2spd) Shifters, a BrazedOn Front Derailleur, 105 Rear Derailleur and including a Shimano 105 (5800) 11-28T Cassette Sprocket. The whole group-set is reliable and has accurate shifting performance This is the first time that the Cannondale Si (System Integration) Cranks have been introduced in the non Hi-Mod series, the cranks are custom made for Cannondale by FSA. The Crank is quite stiff thus helping when pushing hard on the climbs or sprints. The crankset comes with a new 52/36T ratio which was just perfect and is good enough for sprints and fairly easy if you are climbing.

Climb Easy with a compact cassette

The Shimano 105 (BR-5800) brakes received a design makeover this year with a deviation from it’s Dual-Pivot design. There is a fair increase in braking power and a more tyre clearance. Shimano claims that there is an improvement of 10% over the previous 5700 version & this new version enables you to run up to 28mm tires. The SuperSix Evo comes in with Mavic Aksium is an ideal wheel-set for training weighing at 1890g is a bit on the heavier side but the wheelset is stiff & highly tensioned with straight pull spokes & 20 Spoke count on both the front & rear wheel. The front wheel has only round spokes while the rear has round spokes on the non-drive (left) side & bladed spokes on the drive (right) side. The Aksium’s are ready for most types of road riding & the latest Aksium’s have had some improvements on the Hubs to make them last longer. The wheels are fitted with Schwalbe Lugano 25mm Tires which has a thread pattern change to provide reliable traction and better rolling resistance. The tires work well as all-weather training tires and are quite comfortable on the 25mm. Like the earlier versions of the SuperSix that came with a Cannondale Saddle this year’s version came in with a Selle Royal Seta S1 Flat Saddle which is a lightweight, handmade, highperformance saddle developed by designer Yoshio Motoki. It has a flat top surface more like the Fizik saddles to improve felxibility, regardless of the riders seated position. The saddle has features like a Shock-Shell base & Flex Foam for enhanced durability & comfort performance. All in all, the SuperSix Evo seems to be a dream machine

The Giant Glory 27.5

T

he new generation Giant Glory 27.51 is a competition oriented downhill flyer. It boasts an all new, strong and agile ALUXX SL aluminium frameset.

The radical hydro formed tube set utilizes the latest, lightweight Maestro copivot designed to shed grams while maintaining outstanding stiffness and durability. A full RockShox setup helps the cyclist deal with the bumps. You get the Boxxer RC fork up front paired with a top-end Vivid R2C shock at the rear. 8inches/203mm of suspension travel makes this cycle insulate the roughness of any terrain, while remaining predictable and composed. This coupled with the Maestro linkage, will soak up all the hits even when you slam on the brakes, considering the reliable & brilliant performance of the SRAM Guide R disc brakes it’s shod with. The drive of the Glory 27.5 1 is managed by SRAM GX 1x10speed drivetrain, known for its bomb-proof build and reliable shifting coupled with the Truativ Descendant crankset, and along with the Giant PAM2 27.5 wheelset gives a huge amount of reliability and stability on treacherous terrain. The bike reviewed here came with Maxxis DHR II 27.5x2.60 tires which provides all the traction required on muddy trails. However, all that traction does mean that they do roll slower. It has been mentioned by many leading riders around the country that the stability of the bike is better than its earlier cousins. It’s Long, low and slack geometry makes the cycle ready for some

serious race or uplift action. The the 63-degree head angle and the low 340mm bottom bracket makes the bike feel more responsive in tightest, steepest turns, and the lengthy 1,257mm wheelbase adds the stability required while he bombs down some of the world’s most demanding tracks. A 63.5 cm effective top tube length gives the racer adequate amount of space to move about on the bike should one need to. The Over Drive steerer tube system helps in maximum front end stiffness. Given the pedigree of the bike the price is tagged at Rs. 4.32 lacs. The Giant Glory 27.51 offers an edge to a DH rider over other bikes and can easily endure a whole racing season without much maintenance.

Cycling in Hampi aniSh

H

ampi is a deeply captivating tourist spot in India. It houses the remains of the once glorious Vijayanagara kingdom, a 15th Century Hindu Empire that ruled most of Southern Peninsula. Surrounded by rocky hills and the meandering Tungabhadra river, Hampi can be the calling for a getaway that you have been leaving unanswered. Hampi is situated in Hospet taluk of Karnataka’s Bellary district and is night’s journey by bus or train from Bengaluru. Hampi is popular both with solace seekers and devotees alike. The current town centre houses the magnificent Virupaksha Temple complex that is visited by devotees from many of the neighbouring states of Karnataka. For me, Hampi has been the start of solo travelling since my first visit there back in 2012. While most people deem it good to spend a weekend or a week at Hampi, my previous visit spanned 3 weeks and complete photo documentation of all the monuments in the region. It was for my college project. I’ll have you know that such projects are only secured while graduating in History of Art and being on the good books with the Archaeological Survey of India. It had been some time that Hampi and the bewildering solitude it offers had been calling out to me and I packed my bags and left making one phone call to my dear friend to secure a pad over my head, Mr. (LIC) Virupakshi who is an award winning tour guide and just a gem of a person. On my previous visit I had way too much photography equipment and short stops to make that I did not hire a bicycle to get around. I preferred the classic walking method to soak in all this place has to offer making stpos at every 100 meters or so to click a photo. Believe me, walking around all alone in the regions and sometimes even wandering off into the edges of the region can be one of the best experiences you will ever have. Add a hint of wonder and imagination to the mysticism that surrounded the Vijayangara empire and the claim for the region being the birthplace of Lord Hanuman and you can end up with some amazing fictional stories inside your head. This time around, I did not have the burden of equipment of charting each and every stone. There are just a few monuments that are my all time favourite and I just needed to make sure I visited them and my long standing association with a bicycle magazine kept whispering to me to #getoutandride. If you are a bicycle snob like I think I might be turning into, then you will have to leave your heart at home for the bicycles you can rent here are humble steel frame bicycles that do not have gears. The most advanced (read as newer) bicycle you will find here are the Decathlon My Bike. Still single speed but a lot more familiar silhouette to the urban cyclist. If you want to check out all the monuments and still want to control the pace that you set, then cycling is the best option for you to get

20

CRANK with ProCycle SEPTEMBER 15TH, 2016

around. Some of the monuments are in clusters and each cluster can be a minimum of about 1-2 kms from each other. Now instead of walking that distance a bike helps you cut out the boredom too. If you are new to cycling or haven’t cycled in a while or are worried about not having gears or think you are just not fit enough, fret not, for there is only just one steep incline that can knock your wind out. That is the edge of the Hemakuta hills that leads to the entry into Hampi. Hampi is otherwise mostly flat grounds and a fair pace of cycling can be set by anybody. You can easily push the bicycle up to cross this climb and remember to enjoy the downhill drift on your return. For me however, staying on the pedal as I reached the peak of this steep one was a complete mandate and was a delightful change from shifting gears. Goes to show that I might not be a cycle snob after all and am one to enjoy the heart pounding a single speed steel frame can offer on hills. Bicycle rent ranges from Rs. 100-150 for a full day. Make sure you exchange contact numbers and also let them know which of the many home stays or guest houses around you are staying at for emergency purposes. Check your bicycle thoroughly for tyre pressure, proper functioning brakes and pedals and wheels that spin freely. If you see any qualm, be sure to get it fixed or change the bicycle. In terms of route. This is my favourite and has to be started early in the day. A good 8am start should be fine. Get out of the Hampi village, finish the steep climb, visit the two monolithic Ganesha temples, Kadilekaalu and Saasivekaalu take a left at the fork on the road and visit the Krishna temple and Bazaar. Enroute you will find the Badavi LIngam, Ugra Narasima Temple and many more, all of which have been well marked for directions by the ASI and Karnataka tourism. But, you are on a bicycle, you are not just here for the destination, but the journey as well. Look around and enjoy the banana plantation or the a quick face wash in the 500 year old Thuruthu canal. The route will take you to Kamalapura village with the underground shiva temple, Hazara Rama Temple, the Royal complex, Mahanavami DIbba, Lotus Mahal, Elephant stable, Queens bath and many more, just ensure you lock the bicycle where ever you park it and just enjoy the spectacles carved in stone. From Kamalapura, you can take a right, head to the Kamalapura lake and at the next junction take another right turn, this road will lead you straight back to Hampi. The only site you will miss out on this route is the Vittala temple, but that is best executed via a walk or a coracle ride along the Tungabhadra river. Hampi will keep calling out to me and like a bad boyfriend I will keep ignoring the calls until I start missing it again. But somewhere deep down I know that I always miss Hampi and my recent bicycle exploration has only reaffirmed that feeling deep down.

The Cycling Collective

I

I recall many an early morning bunch ride, during which these fanatics can be heard bragging about how they’ve only slept for 30 hours in the last week, whilst pulling off an 80-hour work week and 500km of riding. Indeed, hard core cyclists (or ‘purists’) are a unique group of people.

’ve just finished watching highlights from stage 18 of the Giro d’Italia (Tour of Italy) - the opening ‘Grand Tour’ of the professional cycling season. Having lived most of my life in the far east of the Asia-Pacific time zone, I know what it’s like to be awake until as late as 02:30 to watch the end of a stage live. That was before I got old - now I would rather sleep!

However, there are many ways to experience the joy and beauty of cycling. Even if you can’t relate to the scenarios on this page, it says nothing about whether or not you are a ‘true’ cyclist.

By contrast, India’s relative proximity to Europe make it the perfect location to tune in for the final kilometres of a big European race. So, did you tune in? If not, why not? Cam Whiting

I guess it all depends on how you prefer to “consume” cycling. I know plenty of die-hard fans who will watch every single available minute of coverage, straining their eyeballs to spot individual riders in a tight bunch and are generally in a state of nonstop suspense and/or excitement for the entire race. At the other end of the spectrum are the “instant gratification” crowd – people like myself who are simply content to watch a

Oceania Contributing Editor quick highlights package the next day. Where I live now, truly dedicated cyclists will stay up for every live stage of a threeweek stage race, sleep a couple of hours, then go out riding before work starts. These fanatics are usually ultra-competitive types who have a penchant for suffering, and love to let everyone know about their achievements.

The fact is, there is much more that connects us than whether or not we can name, for example, the winner of the 1976 Tour de France (Lucien Van Impe, in case you’re wondering). Whether we cycle for adventure, speed, adrenaline, practicality or simply just having fun, we are collectively making a positive difference. And that’s worth riding for. Hope to see you on the road soon!

Maintaining tyre pressure

O

ne of the simplest and most regularly checked for items on your bicycle has to be the pressure in the tyre. Giving it a good squeeze might not always do. Since the bicycle is a vehicle propelled by the human body, appropriate tyre pressures help you stay at well defined speed and also help avoid flats. The tips below should help you in maintaining the pressure on your clincher type or inner tubed tyres. Bicycle tyres are meant for really high pressures. The least pressure being around 50 PSI (per Square Inch) and highest going up to 110 PSI and is almost always marked on the side walls of the tyre along with compatible tube size measurements. Tyre Pressure and Tube Size

There are different types of tube valves based on the amount of pressure required. There are Presta or French valves (thin looking ones) for high pressure tyres like road or hybrid tyres because the valve is better at preventing leaks and pressure maintenance. This is done by an inbuilt mechanism that prevents accidental leakage of air. To fill air, you need to unscrew the valve pin at the tip of the valve and then affix the air pump. Next in line is the Schrader valve, (fatter valve) it is the most common kind of valve found and is popular on MTB’s and is the same valve used in cars and motorcycles. A remnant of time gone by is the Dunlop valve, more common in kids bicycles and really old and commuter class entry level bicycles. Dunlops are not famous for holding pressure whether high or low especially over long periods of time.

Presta or French Valve with Valve Pin

Dunlop Valve

You can maintain tyre pressure by using a floor pump or a hand pump in case of emergencies. Most pumps these days are adaptable for Presta and Schrader valves. A series of adapter parts need to be arranged in an order for different valve compatibility. This order is usually same for both hand and floor pumps. Check instructions of your particular pump for clarifications. You can use the pump in Presta setting when filling a Dunlop valve.

Tips: • Always remove any plastic caps on the valves before filling air and remember to replace them back. • Be gentle when loosening Presta valve pins so as to not bend them.

Floor Pump

Hand Pump

• Ensure checking the pump gauge to fill the right amount of air as per the inscription on the tyre. • Schrader valves can be filled at fuel stations. • Emphasize the recommended tyre pressure to the attendant, they are used to car and bike PSI of under 50psi. • Do not fill Nitrogen in bicycle tubes. • If using Presta valves, invest in a Presta to Schrader adapter to help refilling even without bicycle specific pumps like fuel stations or local puncture shops.

Surf’s Up – Staying afloat through the board

F

or a lot of us in India, surfing is a foreign concept reserved for the beaches of Hawaii. The exclusivity and the media have solidified an image of surfing as a concept reserved for only the privileged in India. The Shaka Surf club has defied these stereotypes and shattered the glass ceiling that covered the surfing world. The club is run by Ishita Malaviya and Tushar Pathiyan, both of whom are avid surfers and the gurus of the club. Their experience with surfing started way back in their college days. Since surfing was viewed more as a luxury, tourist activity rather than something to do for fun, they received no monetary support from their families. The journey to the Shaka Surf Club was a hard one but they feel it was definitely well worth the trouble. The student town of Manipal is well known for the beautiful beaches that surround it and that’s where the idea for the club was first born. It wasn’t easy and as students it meant forgoing a lot of their social lives.

“We would sleep early instead of partying all night. We woke up at 5 and we used to go to the beach and paddle and try to ride the waves. It was difficult but once we mastered it and rode a wave, the feeling was exhilarating”, says Tushar. Their first surfing experiences were at Kodibengere, known to students as Delta Beach. The relatively empty beach was the perfect place to start. A local surf ashram run by foreigners in Mulki was their first choice but it was too expensive so they had to find other options. By hook or crook they managed to save up enough to buy a surf-board between them and delved deeper into the surf world. After the board, it was simply a matter of practice and perseverance. Once they had finished college and mastered the art of surfing, the most natural progression was to teach others and share with them what they had learnt. “No one really understands the concept of a lifestyle built around surfing. It’s amazing – fitness and fun combined, life by the beach and water”, says Tushar.

The Shaka Surf Club was born from this determination and a lot of saving. Their first ‘school’ was out of an old toddy shop which they renovated themselves. After that it was just waiting. Since their only way of advertising was word of mouth it took some time before their club started getting more customers. In the meantime, they took to teaching the local kids in the village surfing. The Shaka Surf Club now has a huge following all over India. Their rates are quite reasonable and the experience is certainly worth it. And most of all, it’s easy, provided you’re not scared of water and you know swimming. The surfing scene in India is not what it used to be either with lots of spots where one can catch a tube and new surfing enthusiasts are everywhere. The Shaka Surf Club and Tushar and Ishita, have helped put surfing on India’s sports map and opened up a new avenue to active sports and fitness enthusiasts. We at Crank wish them the very best and hope they will always have their Surf On!
