Importance of Gantry Crane Design in Smoothening Movement and Facilitating Operations The term gantry crane design is increasingly gaining popularity in the material handling industry. Unaware often refer to the overhead bridge crane system when they say gantry crane. However, the two are vastly different. The latter is essentially a mechanism that uses its legs for support rather than a beam or other fixtures found within the facility. The indoor variations are often equipped with multiple or single girders – the former being suited for heavy-duty tasks. Gantry Cranes – The Uniqueness of the Equipment Arrangement Established and reputed chain hoist manufacturers in the industry opine the concerned machine is a type of overhead crane that often features single or double girder configuration. With freestanding legs supporting the mechanism, it moves along a rail, track system or on wheels. It discards all needs of support columns or permanent runway beams. Most commonly used below the existing overhead bridge crane mechanism or for outdoor applications, it does not need any support structures. As a result, usage of these machines significantly lowers material costs while offering a more cost-effective solution over specified bridge cranes. Different Types of Cranes 

Full gantry – Popular as the most popular configuration, it consists of two legs. It rides on rail and typically operates in a straight line of the designated work site.

Portable gantry – These are smaller and lighter machines that operate on rubber or casters wheels. It allows the user to transport it throughout the facility for efficient handling of various loads or materials.

Semi gantry – With one leg on rails or wheels and the other on a runway system, it offers the advantage of saving floor space.

Adjustable gantry – Specifically engineered with features that support variation in span design and height. It offers more flexibility while transporting.

The more extensive arrangements usually run on track or rail, while the smaller and portable ones operate on wheels or castors. The latter facilitates easy movement for light fabrication or maintenance work.
