PROGRAM NOTES Transmigration (2010)

Schopenhauer believed that art, in particular music, had- has-the power to cause the will, the irrational, striving will, to somehow turn back onto and into itself and cease to strive. He considered this a religious experience, although temporary.

Somehow art, somehow music especially, has the power to transform man from an irrational thing into some rational entity that is not driven by biological impulses, impulses cannot be by definition ever be satisfied.

Toru Takemitsu

The Poignant quality of Takemitsu’s short lay is softened by the composers 1940’s pop style setting. That style suggested to me a shuffling three-quarter time rhythmic introduction accompanied by brushes on a snare drum.

-Robin Engelman Catching Shadows (2013) Ivan Trevino Michael Burritt and I have become good friends over the years, and on a recent road trip to a gig, he said, “I’m in charge of the tunes.” Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect. He plugged in his iPod and the first thing to play: Radiohead, the Dave Matthews, then Earth Wind and Fire. That’s when I discovered something cool about Mike; he’s as much rock musician as classical musician. It just so happens he plays marimba. I feel the same way. With Catching Shadows I thought about our road trip and decided to write a rock tune inspired by his playlist.

Omphalo Centric Lecture Nigel Westlake After almost 40 years, this work for marimba quartet is one of the most performed compositions for percussion and stands as a true masterpiece. Inspired by a painting by Pual Klee, the work is a dense tapestry of interlocking patterns and memorable melodies that continue to excite audiences around the world.

Pop Psyche (2017) Caleb Pickering Pop Psyche is a programmatic work that outlines the Greek mythos of Cupid’s wife Psyche. The story revolves around Psyche wandering the Earth to find cupid again, after both she and Cupid betray each other’s marital trust. Psyche completes a series of trials and tribulations and journeys through the underworld itself to find Cupid. The Couple is eternally reunited at the end of the story, and serves as an allegory to modern love. The “Pop” refers to the use of pop style melodies and harmonies throughout.
