A letter from leadership Dear friends: For four decades, Y.O.U. has steadfastly operated with one focus: ensuring all teens and young adults, no matter their age, race or address, are ready to pursue a path to economic self-sufficiency through coaching, career exploration, training and work experiences.

As the community reflects upon this 40-year milestone, we are reminded of Cleveland’s motto, “Progress and Prosperity.” We celebrate Y.O.U.’s progress by innovating through data-driven practices, expanding to serve both teens and young adults, and collaborating with community partners and employers. Year after year, Y.O.U. adapts to the workforce landscape with an eye toward the future, grounded in the realities of poverty and systemic racism faced by our participants.

The demand for prosperity transcends Cleveland’s borders and is felt regionwide. Education systems are the only institutions creating new members of HARDIMAN our workforce. We all must look to our schools and consider how we can support students in becoming the leaders of tomorrow. To realize a prosperous Northeast Ohio, we must also accomplish Y.O.U.’s vision of a just and equitable community where every young person is readily and confidently pursing a meaningful future.

Forty years of history

I

t was the fall of 1982, and forecasters predicted the summer of 1983 was going to be a hot one. Mayor George Voinovich saw a problem. How was the city going to keep teens occupied, off the streets and safe during those long, hot months? The answer: get them to work.

executive director Carol DiLillo-Kenney sat in Van Auken’s living room and matched 1,000 youths with employers.

Mayor Voinovich convened Cleveland Tomorrow, an association of the region’s largest corporations, to solve the problem of funding summer jobs for teenagers. What came out of their deliberations would be one of Cleveland’s first public-private partnerships, a hallmark of Voinovich’s leadership legacy: Youth Opportunities Unlimited.

Today, the Summer Youth Employment Program has grown to serve 2,0003,000 youths each year throughout Cleveland and Cuyahoga County. In addition to a paid experience, youths are paired with a job coach and a case manager to remove barriers and ensure successful completion. A 2021 study from Case Western Reserve University shows that youths in Y.O.U.’s program are more likely to attend school, have much higher high school graduation rates and are less likely to be involved in the criminal justice system, especially in violent crime.

Several companies, along with the Cleveland Foundation, came together to fund that first summer. Huntington National Bank President Robert Van Auken, first board chair of Y.O.U., and its

Today and the future

Y

outh Opportunities Unlimited is the only organization in the region whose sole purpose is to provide workforce development services for youth. We’re in the schools and in the community.

There are four pillars of all Y.O.U. programs: • Job readiness training • Career exploration activities • Coaching and mentoring from a caring adult • Paid work experience We measure success by: • Being a quality pipeline for young adults entering careers in high demand industries • Holistically preparing teens and young adults to pursue a path toward a meaningful future in partnership with schools, employers and agencies • Advocating systemic changes that end structural racism and other inequalities perpetuating poverty • Leveraging partnerships to engage and serve more youth in ways they deem most relevant and effective Y.O.U. is expanding its reach by being an anchor partner in the PACE (Planning and Career Exploration) program in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. PACE introduces all students to career possibilities at an early age and guides

them as they develop the confidence, knowledge, skills and relationships required to achieve their goals. Y.O.U. is providing work-based learning opportunities, coaching and instruction to all CMSD high schools.

Y.O.U. has also been chosen to be the organizational home and fiscal agent of the Greater Cleveland Career Consortium (GCCC), an unprecedented collaboration of industries and employers, youth-centered organizations, K-12 and higher education, philanthropy and government. The vision is for the GCCC to expand the PACE model throughout the region so employers have a pipeline of skilled workers and our area’s youths have opportunities for family-sustaining careers.

DALE ROBINSON ANGLIN, vice president of program for the Cleveland Foundation, is a passionate and extremely articulate advocate of positive youth development programming.

In addition to consistently communicating the rich impact of summer jobs, Dale oversees grantmaking initiatives addressing the ongoing needs of diverse communities, which have included out-of-school time programming, Say Yes to Education, youth violence prevention, faith-based initiatives, special needs and general health care and social services.

She embodies the spirit of George Voinovich by effectively bringing people together and facilitating partnerships that get things done. Dale created, launched and continues to lead the Greater Cleveland COVID 19 Rapid Response Fund, now the Funders Collaborative on COVID Recovery, which has supported more than 675 organizations over two years.

SHANA MARBURY is general counsel and vice president of talent at the Greater Cleveland Partnership. For more than a decade, Shana has made many contributions to youth workforce and education with humility and enthusiasm. She has been the voice in the room advocating for workforce development, especially among younger and often overlooked people. Shana is an instrumental leader in ensuring the business community has been connected to the Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s PACE initiative and has tirelessly worked on several committees planning and implementing this innovative project.

Shana is currently the chair of the Fenn Educational Fund Advisory Committee and secretary of the Friends of Max S. Hayes High School. She is also a board member of the City Club of Cleveland, the Centers for Families and Children, the Cleveland Transformation Alliance and the Community Growth Educational Foundation. Shana also serves as a member of the Cleveland Municipal School District Nominating Panel.

HE BRENDA STARK AWARD, in memory of a Y.O.U. staff member, recognizes an extraordinary front-line youth development worker operating in the nonprofit arena.

Rebecca Coiner is the community engagement specialist at OhioGuidestone. Since 2012, She has worked in multiple programs serving youth in foster care, residential Department of Youth Services facilities and school-based programming while also ensuring youths are getting the resources they need to be successful into their transition to adulthood. In addition to empowering their academic success, Rebecca helps students understand the importance of job readiness skills and navigate the hidden rules and language of the workplace.
