A TECHNOLOGICAL TRANSFORMATION

Educators prepare students for the real world in state-ofthe-art school environments

T

he days of students learning passively through class lectures and regurgitating memorized notes on paper tests are evaporating. Kindergartners are learning computer coding. Elementary students are toggling between operating systems on PCs and Macs and figuring out how biomimicry can create new technologies. Middle school students are unearthing the value of wearable technologies.

Students’ proficiencies are even more sophisticated as time progresses, with high schoolers designing circuit boards or conceptualizing and physically manufacturing widgets.

Private schools throughout Northeast Ohio are ramping up their experiential learning programs to activate students’ skill sets early on in their education, so they are prepared to tackle real-world challenges in an everchanging technologically driven frontier. Gleaming new facilities are sprouting up, equipped with the tools students need to be workforce ready in a knowledge economy.

“We’re developing 21st century skills by transforming the learning process,” said Matthew Gerber, director of information and education technology at Western

Western Reserve Academy’s new Center for Technology, Innovation & Creativity, which opened in April, is part of the Hudson institution’s vision for helping students solve real-world problems in a hands-on, state-ofthe-art environment. The center is carved into three main spaces, which feature high-tech equipment that enables students to imagine, prototype and build anything from garments to door hinges.

“The center was only opened two months before school let out, and about seven-eighths of our 400 students had physically made something in the space,” Gerber said.

“They can apply theories such as magnetism or computer programming and put them into practice.

The students are really excited.”

Benedictine High School’s Makerspace/Fablab Design Center, meanwhile, set to open during this upcoming school year, provides students at that Cleveland-based school with the ability to design from “concept to customer” by using technology and integrating art, design, manufacturing and entrepreneurship into the curriculum.

Here, students can learn how to program computers and construct robots that can perform certain tasks.

“The goal is to increase problem solving, critical skills and collaboration,” Benedictine principal Sue Zulandt said. “In order for them to compete in today’s global world, students need to have the opportunity to understand how computers work. They don’t even realize a computer’s capabilities when they begin, and once they start programming, they realize the

capabilities are limitless.”

Similarly, Lake Ridge Academy’s new Kemper Science and Engineering Building offers a variety of science- and engineering-based spaces, including its own Fab Lab, chemistry lab, research lab and greenhouse.

“The center not only allows students to research problems, but to build and test real-life models to answer those problems,” said Kim Parrish, a technology teacher at the North Ridgeville-based school.

“We just hired a civil engineer who spent a number of years working directly in the field to teach in the engineering lab.”

At Gilmour Academy, technology is integrated into a myriad of projects that encourage teamwork, critical thinking and ingenuity.

BUILDING COMMUNITY believes the engagement strategies helped contribute to an increase of 49% in total alumni giving between the school’s 2015-16 fiscal year.

The school’s annual fund increased 12%, from $248,250 to $278,664.

“We’re really focused on alumni outreach, and we’ve seen more engagement this past year,” said Thomas, noting that social media has played a key role in those connections. “We’re hoping those relationships convert into more financial support. We’re very happy.”

Indeed, local private schools are shoring up their engagement with the current parent base and alumni to spur more social and financial support.

Amy Mackie-Barr, head of school at South Suburban Montessori School, said her Brecksville institution last year intensified focus on its “time, talent and treasures”

initiative that empowers parents to give to the school in other ways besides financial support.

“We have a diverse community with parents from a variety of different financial backgrounds,” she said.

“We encourage parents to give back through time and talent, either through 15 volunteer hours a year, which could be anything from helping with the garden or a field trip, to speaking to the classroom or providing expertise as a board member.”

About 90% of parents participated last school year in some capacity.

Parents also have a personal stake in some of the school’s family driven fundraisers. They are able to make suggestions on how funds generated are used, whether reinvesting in a playground or subsidizing faculty travel expenses for national conferences.

She believes the concerted

engagement approach and targeted messaging has propelled the school to exceed its annual fund and auction targets.

“Our goal was $15,000 for the annual fund and $20,000 for the auction,” she said. “We raised $18,000 and $27,000 respectively.

We really want our parents involved in the life of our school community, now and down the road.”

Cleveland Heights-based Beaumont School began channeling more energy into a healthy mix of traditional print and digital communication to incentivize social and financial support.

“There are multiple doors that alumni can enter to offer to help support Beaumont,” said the school’s president, Sister Gretchen Rodenfels.

“The number of gifts has increased along with the amount of each gift.”

The institution just completed its largest capital campaign, with $9.5 million raised for the new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Building. The school also established five new scholarships, and still nearly met its annual fund goal of $220,000, with $200,000 raised.

“And our social media efforts helped us exceed our $85,000 gala goal, with $90,000 raised,” Rodenfels said. “Our goal this year is $90,000, and I’m sure we’ll exceed that.”

Educators and business leaders in Ohio and throughout the country increasingly are recognizing that computer science is a new basic skill necessary for economic opportunity and social mobility, according to a statement issued in 2016 by President Barack Obama.

Computing occupations are the No. 1 source of all new wages in the U.S., and comprise about twothirds of all projected new jobs in STEM, according to code.org, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding student access to computer science.

A computer science degree is one of the most in-demand college degrees.

Ohio currently has about 15,000

open computing jobs, although only about 1,100 computer science students graduated in 2014 — 15% of whom were female, according to that organization.

Public and private K-12 schools are working toward improving those graduation figures by integrating computer science coursework into their curriculums.

“As of last year, we made computer science a graduation requirement,” said Barry Kallmeyer, chief information officer at Hathaway Brown School.

“We start offering coding classes in primary school as part of the technology classes. We’ve seen more growth in enrollment in our AP computer science classes. We

feel strongly about engaging our female students in a field that was male-dominated for so long.”

Meanwhile, school leaders are planning for the next generation of early education.

“Quantum computers are coming,” said Gilmour Academy’s Adiletta. “They require a different type of thinking because they have the ability to solve hugely complex problems using every theory possible.”

While it may sound sci-fi, tomorrow’s elementary school students will likely be digesting physics and quantum mechanics.

“It won’t be long, and we need to be prepared,” he said. “It’s blowing everyone’s mind.”

Institutions focus on creating connections, increasing engagement with alumni, supporters

avid Thomas was hired last year at his alma mater, Grand River Academy, in a position that previously had not existed. As the Austinburg school’s new assistant director of advancement and alumni relations, Thomas was tasked with assimilating alumni and current students into a more cohesive community, and otherwise strengthen outreach efforts. The formerly separate alumni and graduation weekends merged.

Alumni pitched in for the first time to assist with the five-week summer academy. Fifty years’ worth of yearbooks were catalogued online, encouraging students and graduates to share, peruse and share with peers.

Although Thomas wasn’t directly involved with the school’s annual giving campaign, he

essays through digital story-telling projects using cloud-based video editing software, said Dan Adiletta, coordinator of academic technology and computer science instructor. This is just one example of how technology is transforming the ways in which students interpret the world around them.

“Professional companies want to see young employees who have career-ready skills, such as familiarity with cloud management, and understanding how to use machines to communicate,” he said.

GROOMING TOMORROW’S LEADERS

From experiential learning to externships, programs aim to develop well-rounded critical thinkers

B

y the time Samuel Lerner donned his high school graduation cap in 2013 as an International Baccalaureate, he had forged his own path to leadership. As part of an externship program, Lerner had raised $31,000 so that he and his Montessori High School peers could tour startups in New York City and San Francisco.

The exposure during high school led to new opportunities that have bolstered his résumé and early career experience.

“The externship was one of the best things to come my way during high school,” said Lerner, who interned this past summer at a California tech company and is majoring in human resource management at Bentley University in Massachusetts. “I loved being able to write my own education path and experience entrepreneurship in an unconventional way.”

The Montessori High School at University Circle’s externship program is among a spate of opportunities that are preparing students to succeed in college and the professional world.

“Universities and certainly employers want authentic instruction.

This is a movement we’ve seen across the board over the last five to 10 years,” said Gregg Good, head of school. “They are looking for students who have that project-driven, hands-on, critical thinking, problemsolving experience. Forward-thinking universities are starting to measure these skills and activities beyond

standardized test scores.”

Independent schools throughout Northeast Ohio are grooming tomorrow’s leaders with curricula and programs that inspire creativity, build confidence and promote leadership. Students armed with those skills are the aces that colleges and employers are looking for in the deck of applicants and job candidates.

“What we’re finding from college admissions offices is that they’re not so much interested in a jack-of-all-trades approach.

They’re interested in students who are deeply connected with one or two activities,” said Trey Wilson, director of strategic partnerships and initiatives at Shaker Heightsbased Laurel School.

CHARTING THEIR OWN PATHS To that extent, Laurel School in January launched a capstone PRIVATE SCHOOL PLANNER

experience that begins in ninth grade and proceeds through senior year.

The non-graded initiative allows students to design their own courses of involvement around one of four categories — civic engagement; entrepreneurship; global studies; or STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics).

Experiences could range from writing cookbooks to making movies or writing screenplays.

“We want the students to develop their leadership skills and a deeper sense of purpose,” Wilson said.

Meanwhile, the school’s two-year Diversity Fellows program connects students with their surrounding communities through various events that celebrate culture.

“The capstone and diversity groups are really collaborative because they allow students to take ownership and engage with others,” Wilson said. “They provide peer-topeer feedback and work closely in peer-to-adult settings, which allows them develop relationship skills.”

At the same time, secondary schools, universities and employers are looking beyond students’ knowledge base and want to see how students synthesize information they’ve gleaned from the classroom, said Jerry IsaakShapiro, head of school at Joseph and Florence Mandel Jewish Day School in Beachwood.

“It’s not just about learning, it’s why we’re learning,” he said. “We’re integrating our curriculum. It’s not just about math in a silo or science in a silo. We integrate math, science,

arts, music, language arts and Hebrew because the real world is multidimensional and multicultural.”

As part of that integration, the Joseph and Florence Mandel Jewish Day School participated this past year in the Global Classrooms International Middle School Model UN Conference in New York City, which brought together student delegates from around the world.

“Our students represented Guyana, and we took a deep dive into its country, history, economics, bureaucratic rules and geography, and then we portrayed ourselves as delegates from that country,” he said. “We met hundreds of other students from around the world. It was a great experiment in multicultural learning.”

POWER UP In order to think critically and collaborate, students need to be proficient technology users.

School tablet dispersal begins in kindergarten at Old Trail School. By sixth grade, the tablets are treated as navigable learning devices, in which students are permitted to transport them to and from home and school.

“It’s important for kids to associate technology with purposeful academic use, and not just gaming,” said David Chottiner, middle and intermediate school director.

The tablets have Google apps for education, Adobe Photoshop for art and even SmartMusic, an app that supplements music practice at home by tracking successes and areas for improvement, among other functions.

Computers, however, cannot replace valuable face-to-face collaboration.

“One of the first things we tell students during a team project is to put the device down, pick up your pencil and paper, and engage with your teammates around you,” Chottiner said. “Face-to-face collaboration in the 21st-century business world is so important.

We don’t want to put students in a situation in which they’re talking through their computer screens when their peers are sitting two feet away.”
