Making education an experience

Schools embrace personalized learning outside the traditional classroom

T

he Institute for 21st Century Education at Hathaway Brown School in Shaker Heights features 11 different centers — ranging from global citizenship, business, multicultural affairs and writing to leadership and wellbeing, civic engagement and creative arts. The centers are the ports of student-driven learning based on the girls’ own passions and curiosity. A high school science research and engineering student may work alongside NASA scientists during her freshman year to study the spread of malaria in different countries. A student of the Center for Global Citizenship may travel to India, or any other continent (apart from Antarctica) to augment her school-based studies on business, economics and gender equality.

“Our high school motto is that we learn not for school but for life,” said Joe Vogel, the institute’s director.

“We look at what it means to learn, not only for a grade or traditional classroom experience. We look at what it means to pursue your passions and be a lifelong learner.”

While traditional classroom instruction serves as the foundation of a student’s education, private schools throughout Northeast Ohio and beyond are transforming their curriculums — and campuses — around personalized experiential learning.

Sure, students learn by doing. But experiential learning emboldens students to ask questions, make connections, collaborate and problem solve, all of which are skills students need to thrive in the 21st century.

“Experiential learning allows students to engage in a meaningful way,” Vogel said. “They develop social skills, dive deeply into complex issues and develop their critical-thinking skills. We’ve collected data on our graduates, and have found that experiential learning has a profound effect on their education. The world is open to our students in a way that they can

dream big, and anything they want to do is an option.”

Similarly, Lake Ridge Academy’s centers for fine arts, scientific exploration and research, and global citizenship empower students to individualize their curriculums around what they want to explore, develop or solve, be it glycogen storage disease at a Case Western Reserve University lab or wastewater treatment solutions. In some cases, students inherit the research of their predecessors.

What began three years ago as one student’s probe into links between algae blooms and phragmites evolved into a current pupil’s exploration into the benefits of the tall reed.

“Students have to go in front of a panel and present their findings as if they were defending a master’s thesis,” said Michael Shaulis, head of academics and director of the Upper School. “They have to think on their feet and think critically. Experiential learning helps them develop these abilities required for good leadership.”

Experiential learning opportunities run the gamut throughout the lower, middle and upper levels at University School, said Bill O’Neil, assistant headmaster and academic dean at University School, which has campuses in Shaker Heights and Hunting Valley. Lower school students tackle themes around broad concepts, and

weave in months of interdisciplinary learning around that topic, such as markets of the world.

“Our boys study whales for four months, and then we go to Nantucket for a whale watch,” he said. Projects are more involved as they get older.

A $250,000 K-8 STEAMworks maker space is scheduled to open in late fall. At the Upper School, a hardwood forest and lake serve as a living lab. An astronomical observatory, trout hatchery, apiary and maple sugar operation galvanize a student’s scientific interests.

Interdisciplinary, project-based learning drives the education of toddlers through eighth grade at Joseph and Florence Mandel Jewish Day School in Beachwood, said Kim Favor, middle school director.

“In fourth grade, for example, we study amusement parks,” she said.

“The unit begins with students experiencing a virtual ride on a roller coaster.

Then we ask what we need to do to run a successful amusement park.”

Students investigate through the lens of all subject areas — language arts, math, social studies, music, physical education, art and Judaic studies — while constructing a simulated walk-through of their own amusement park.

“We write, we measure, we create carnival jingles and design dual-lan-

guage advertisements in (Adobe) Photoshop. Then at the end of the year, we go to Cedar Point,” Favor said.

Once students are in middle school, integrated project work becomes more profound. Students devise their project-based learning experiences around a real-world problem they want to solve by working with community-based experts.

“With every project-based learning unit, students have to give back to the community in some way,” Favor said.

Experiential learning also is one of the pillars of the curriculum at Laurel School in Shaker Heights, said Leslie Segal, middle school director.

Immersion weeks at the fifth-grade level may include collaboration with entrepreneurs or field trips to green businesses. Sixth-grade girls spend their immersion week tinkering in a variety of ways, whether it’s working with inventors on developing prosthetic limbs or testing a new chocolate chip cookie recipe.

“Just because the girls are in sixth grade doesn’t mean they need to be doing a junior-level variation of everything,” Segal said. “It’s not so much about the educators creating the experience for them.

We want to light the fire under girls that inspires them to do more, go further and create something new.”

Expertise in demand

aculty members are gateways to a student’s experience at a private school. They are the nexus between vision and outcome — conveying a school’s mission while preparing students to engage with purpose throughout their school years and beyond. But attracting qualified candidates in a competitive job market can be challenging — for any institution.

But prep and parochial schools say judicious and intentional faculty recruitment strategies are the key to hiring educators who reflect a school’s values.

“One of our main recruitment drivers is making sure that anyone we hire is aligned with our mission, which is a belief that education is a holistic approach and not just about academics,” said Marilyn Arundel, dean of faculty and academics at Magnificat, a Rocky River-based allgirls Catholic high school. Faculty members need to be confident in nurturing the other facets of a girl’s education, including the social, emotional, developmental and spiritual aspects.

The school seeks candidates who are not only willing to assist with extracurricular school activities, but who also are passionate about serving on a school steering committee or collaborating on the school’s strategic plan.

The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland is broadening its newhire efforts, in part by participating in teacher recruitment fairs at local colleges and universities, such as Cleveland State and Baldwin Wallace. Even though each institution manages its hiring process independently, the diocese helps facilitate staff recruitment throughout its 174 schools located in eight Northeast Ohio counties.

“A lot of our best talent are alums from our elementary and high schools, which is great,” said Christopher Knight, who is beginning his second school year as superintendent of that system.

“But, we have not attended college job fairs consistently. Now we have a presence, which I think presents a real opportunity to tell our story to

However, Hawken tends to hire faculty members with at least five to 10 years of career experience, said Kim Samson, assistant head of school and director of Upper School.

“More often than not, our newest faculty members have master’s degrees,” she said. “Hawken is looking for people who can think differently and want to immerse themselves in progressive ways of teaching.”

The interview process sheds light on what inspires and excites the candidate. “We want to know where they see their craft going over the next few years, and whether their goals align with the school,” Samson said.

Similarly, the prior experiences of teachers at Montessori High School at University Circle augment their respective subjects. Humanities teachers have backgrounds working in archeology, cultural anthropology and human biology.

The music teacher is a professional bassist, while the theater teacher has directed musicals at big-name theaters throughout Cleveland.

According to the National Association of Independent Schools, candidates who have an advanced degree or related expertise in a particular field — such as an engineer who is interested in a high school science teaching position — generally have an edge over a candidate who is certified to teach school, though certainly that is not always the case.

“A lot of people change careers from, say, business to education, or are transitioning from teaching at a college,” said Myra McGovern, vice president of media for NAIS. “Independent schools have robust professional development opportunities. Some begin their own in-house teaching programs around a particular skill, such as classroom management.”

With an emerging teacher shortfall looming over schools in general, Knight said he wants to make sure the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland is taking advantage of new ways to publicize its schools and connect with prospective teachers.

According to the Learning Policy Institute, an independent education-focused research group, four main factors are driving the projected teacher shortage

nationwide: a decline in teacher preparation enrollments, district efforts to return to pre-recession pupil-teacher ratios, increasing student enrollment and high teacher attrition.

Teacher demand is on the rise after leveling off around 260,000 teacher hires annually in 2014. The Learning Policy Institute projects a large increase in 2017-18 followed by a projected plateau of about 300,000 teacher hires per year.

“The attraction and retention of high-quality teachers is challenging in the non-public world because of the difference in salaries and benefits,” Knight said. “But we need to look more creatively at promoting some of our other benefits, because there are so many, like the overall high satisfaction level teachers feel in working for a Catholic school.”

t. Edward High School hosts a year-round kids club — Future Eagles — that enables boys in sixth grade or younger to attend concerts, athletic events and other community-based activities for free, as long as they are wearing their school-branded T-shirt.

Kids and their parents get excited about the club’s social benefits and welcome package (including a mini football, poster and stickers).

Those Future Eagles and their families also may meet future peers at other area festivals, where St. Ed’s students hand out free school merchandise while the new school ice cream wagon distributes delicious icy treats to little hands.

For the all-boys high school in Lakewood, the club provides a more tangible benefit — exposure.

“We’ve started marketing to families and students when they’re much younger now,” said KC McKenna, vice president of marketing and admission. “By the time a student reaches seventh grade, it may be too late to reach them because they may have already made their decision about where they’ll attend high school.”

McKenna says the marketing strategy has helped the school buck the nationwide ebb in Catholic school enrollment. Conversely, St. Ed’s enrollment has increased 17% since 2010.

“Our reach is now very wide,” he said. “St. Ed’s traditionally had been a school that drew students from the near west side and surrounding suburbs.”

Now, the school draws students from a within a pyramid that encompasses Huron-Sandusky, Concord and Akron.

“We’ve had students representing 80 communities and 199 elementary schools during the last six years,” he said.

Schools forge close ties with youth, families with goal of establishing long-term relationships

options beyond the traditional public or private route, including charter/ community schools, open enrollment in other districts, home school, career/technical education or online.

“Education is really personal. It makes a huge impact when you consider it as a product,” McKenna said.

“For families, tuition is probably the most expensive line item in their bud-

get. You have to demonstrate quality in exchange for that investment. We see community in everything we do.

People and programming is what makes great schools.”

Christopher Knight, superintendent of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, said the school system is ramping up its marketing efforts, which traditionally have only circulated within a school and its proximate community.

“We need to tell our story, which is not just about academics,” Knight said. “It’s about the formation of the whole person. We want to spread the word about our valuable schools.

High schools have started doing this years ago, but some of the elementary and middle schools have traditionally been very localized.”

This summer, the Diocese conducted a marketing website audit that involved a “secret shopper” perusing online sites and evaluating their responses after an initial inquiry.

“We’re finding it to be very informative,” he said. “You don’t realize what you look like through the lens of someone contacting you for the first time. Are we giving them enough information? Did they find what they were looking for? Did we answer their questions and respond promptly? Did we welcome them into our community? We can’t just assume that people will find us.”

Indeed, effective marketing strategies have shifted from an emphasis on missions, traditions and sales to campaigns that are more about developing relationships over time.

“Life-cycle” marketing strategies may yield multiple generations of customers, according to the National Association of Independent Schools.

“What’s key here is that schools are looking for families that are the right fit, and vice versa. It’s about matching school and family,” said Myra McGovern, vice president of media for the association. “Schools need to make sure they are appealing to the reasons that people send their kids to private schools, whether it’s interest in a certain program or individualized attention, and highlight features that most appeal to that target group.”
