REAL ESTATE
Midwest Development picks up pace Group’s Circle Square project nears ‘finish line,’ and other big moves are in works BY STAN BULLARD
In the basement of a three-story building on Murray Hill Road in Cleveland’s Little Italy neighborhood, you’ll find the home base of a real estate group that’s starting to shape Cleveland’s future. In contrast to the brick street outside and brick building above, the basement is outfitted as a contemporary office. It’s the quirky home of Midwest Development Partners, a partnership that is beginning to make an outsize mark on Northeast Ohio real estate. The office suite is near the largest of those undertakings, Circle Square, a multimillion-dollar plan to transform most of the block between Euclid and Chester avenues, Stokes Boulevard and East 105th Street with multiple 23-story, mixed-use buildings. It’s considered an effort to rekindle activity on a site once seen as the city’s second downtown. Steve Rubin, a principal and the public face of Midwest, said in an interview at the firm’s office that Circle Square is “nearing the finish line.” However, he might as accurately have said it was nearing the starting line, with construction of the first part of a real estate development in the making since 2015. Circle Square is just one of three major undertakings by Midwest, but the Murray Hill office says a lot about the firm. The building is close to Midwest’s University Circle endeavors, and it’s in a comfortable setting near Little Italy’s restaurants and coffee shops. Most of all, the office is a sign of a group with such high-profile backgrounds and connections that it has no need to impress and puts its money into its investments.
