THE BUSINESS OF BEER
Firms say they were harassed by group By Jay Miller jmiller@crain.com @millerjh
Two related Richmond Heightsbased aircraft management firms, their executives and pilots have sued a group of pilots from a competitor’s labor organization claiming harassment and defamation during a vote to decertify the union that represented pilots of the two local firms, Flexjet LLC and Flight Options LLC. The lawsuit, filed by the two companies and a group of employees in

Local brewers step out of their comfort zone By Jeremy Nobile jnobile@crain.com @JeremyNobile
While hard seltzers bubbled into the increasingly competitive beer market a couple years ago, it wasn’t until last summer that they hit Sibling Revelry Brewery’s radar. A couple months later, Sibling brewmaster Pete Velez pivoted and rolled out hard seltzers of his own with inaugural batches made in the company’s smaller pilot brewery.
The sugar-plum variety is still being sold at its Westlake taproom, but Velez wants to refine the recipe before scaling up production and possibly canning some. Hard seltzer wasn’t even part of the craft beer world’s vernacular just a few years ago. It was more something you’d order at a cocktail bar, like a gin and tonic or a vodka and soda, and not the malt- or sugar-based products sold in cans today. So for a classically trained brewmaster like Velez, despite hard seltzers being easy enough to make thanks to

a comparatively low list of ingredients, they simply weren’t top of mind. But as consumer tastes shifted, 2018 became a banner year for boozy, fizzy waters. Sales of hard seltzers grew nearly 169% in 2018, becoming a $487.7 million market. Hard seltzers comprised 1.3% of all sales in the combined beer and cider segments last year, according to market research firm Nielsen. That’s after representing just 0.4% of it the year prior, with $181.4 million in sales. SEE BREWERS, PAGE 14

Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court, claims that the NetJets Association of Shared Aircraft Pilots (NJASAP) and several individuals associated with NJASAP sent “hundreds upon hundreds of anonymous, threatening, harassing, defamatory and insulting postcards” to the homes of company managers and employees who spoke up in support of the May 2018 union decertification vote that led to the pilots severing their connection to the Teamsters Union. “They took a very aggressive approach with some of our employees,” said Bob Sullivan, Flexjet’s chief administrative officer. Decertification, he said, “felt like the right thing to do and it still feels like the right thing to do.” SEE FLEXJET, PAGE 17
