INSIDETHELIST You don’t have to spend much time in Cleveland to know that the area is dominated by two hospitals: the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals Case Medical Center. Our list of the region’s largest hospitals reinforces that point in a major way. The Cleveland Clinic’s net patient revenue of nearly $3.2 billion is about 2½ times as large as the No. 2 hospital on the list, UH Case Medical Center, at $1.3 billion. In turn, UH Case Medical Center is about twice as large as the hospital in the No. 3 spot on the list, Summa Akron City Hospital. The numbers offer a stark look at the scope of the hospital industry in Northeast Ohio’s economy. The 10 largest hospitals posted 2009 net patient revenue of about $8 billion. In 2008, those same 10 hospitals posted net patient revenue of $7.3 billion, which means that even in the heart of the recession, the hospitals saw their collective net patient revenue rise about 9.5%.
The 10 largest hospitals posted 2009 net patient revenue of about $8 billion. ... Even in the heart of the recession, the hospitals saw their collective net patient revenue rise about 9.5%. Three of the 10 largest hospitals — the Clinic, Akron Children’s Hospital and Saint Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown — saw net patient revenue rise by double-digit percentages in 2009 from 2008, and a fourth, UH Case Medical Center, was close, at 8.7%. Akron Children’s net patient revenue increase of 16.3%, to $390.2 million in 2009 from $335.6 million in 2008, was the largest increase of any hospital on this year’s list. Lower on the list, two other hospitals — Fisher-Titus Medical Center in Norwalk and University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center in Chardon — experienced double-digit percentage increases in net patient revenue. Other than the government, the hospitals are Northeast Ohio’s largest category of employer. The Clinic and UH alone account for nearly 30,000 employees. Collectively, the 10 largest hospitals employ more than 56,000 people. It’s not all onward and upward for local hospitals. Twelve of 45 hospitals on the list saw a decline in their net patient revenue in 2009 from 2008. The biggest drops were registered at Huron Hospital in East Cleveland, where net patient revenue fell 13.7% to $72.7 million in 2009, and Lakewood Hospital, which experienced an 8.7% decline. The number of staffed beds at the 10 largest hospitals rose slightly — about 2.5% — to 5,677 in 2009 from 5,542 in 2008. — Scott Suttell
