High deductibles up hospitals’ worry INSIDE: No matter how the Affordable Care Act winds up working out, something had to be done in health care, Brian Tucker writes. Page 10

Some Northeast Ohio providers fear Obamacare will result in patients choosing low-cost plans that result in large bills By TIMOTHY MAGAW tmagaw@crain.com

Northeast Ohio hospitals are

worried that more of their customers are about to stick them with the bill. The concern among hospitals is

that Ohioans buying coverage — or at least trying to — on the federally run health insurance exchange could opt for cheaper plans with

high deductibles that would leave those individuals with hulking medical bills should they require care. The problem is that people, in

many cases, don’t pay those bills. It has become harder for hospitals to collect payments since the economy soured. As a result, local hospitals — even the region’s most solvent such as the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals — have grappled with escalating bad debt loads. See DEDUCTIBLES Page 7

Nonprofits are more ‘fragile’ Tumultuous events like recents ones at Case, art museum test depth of support By MICHELLE PARK LAZETTE mpark@crain.com

The type of bad publicity that last week engulfed the Cleveland Museum of Art and Case Western Reserve University can pose a greater threat to such nonprofit organizations than their for-profit counterparts because of the former’s dependence on donors and the public’s good will, local nonprofit advisers say. Market for condos and townhouses isn’t what it once was, but industry rebound has given it a needed jolt

N

ortheast Ohio’s poster child for townhouse and condominium recovery after the housing bust is a row of townhouses on Lindazzo Avenue near East 14th Street at the Av-

enue District development in downtown Cleveland. Although unsold units in the nearby, 10-story Avenue Tower became rentals in a 2012 court settlement, the Avenue District’s last four lowrise townhouses were sold this summer after languishing since 2007.
