Students throw on some glad rags and return to the 1960s! Performing Arts students from City of Wolverhampton College threw on some glad rags for their end of year performance of “Hairspray” - a musical set in the 1960s following the story of a big girl with big hair and a big dream. The Performing Arts students spent weeks rehearsing songs, practising their choreography and designing sets for the performance, which took place in July. However, the students’ work did not stop after this stunning musical as during their summer holidays, they will be swapping the stage for the silver screen! The students will be involved in the making of a full-length feature film, working with The Co-operative British Youth Film Academy. Students will take on roles as actors, wardrobe, film making and directors. Several other students have just returned from Florence where they spent two weeks working with Italian theatre companies, developing their skills for this spectacular performance. Ruth Gavin, Performing Arts lecturer, says “The students have such amazing opportunities throughout their course preparing them for a future career in performing arts. The students love what they do and work incredibly hard, I’m really proud of them!” A few places are still available for our Performing Arts programmes. If you wish to embark on the journey to stardom, then don’t just perform in front of the bathroom mirror, contact us instead (College Direct: 01902-836000 or mail@wolvcoll.ac.uk).

After completing his GCSEs at school Matthew Spilsbury decided to come to college to study for his A Levels. The 18-year-old, who is currently doing English Literature, Chemistry, Geography and Maths is moving on to Warwick University to read English Literature. Matthew said: “College has prepared me well for university; my tutors have gone the extra mile making lessons fun, interesting and interactive and no one is left out. “The course is very diverse and in the second year we have been able to choose some of our own texts - I particularly enjoyed Gothic literature. We have also been able to watch films, go to the theatre and been to the Tower of London. “If you are unsure about which subject you want to study at university and you like reading then A level English Literature is a good choice, as it has transferable skills including essay technique, word choices and reading around a subject.”

f you left school with few or no qualifications and want to go onto Higher Education, our Access to HE course can help you get there. Access to HE bridges the gap between existing education and what you need to study at Degree Level, ensuring you have the knowledge, skills and confidence you will need at university. Each Diploma includes units in several different subjects, and taken together these prepare students for the study of a particular subject at degree level. Many people are nervous when they start an Access to HE course, particularly if they haven’t been in a classroom for some time. Our tutors are aware of this and take it into account in their teaching: you won’t be ‘thrown in at the deep end’ or tested on things which you forgot years ago. What is more, as a mature student, your life experiences will be valuable on the course and you’ll find that other Access to HE students - and students in universities - are of a wide age range. In fact, 54% of Access to HE students are over the age of 25. Every year around 30,000 people enrol onto an Access to HE course, many of whom go on to succeed at university and beyond, with a large number pursuing new careers and seeing changes in their lives that they had never thought possible.

I

ACCESS & EDUCATION MEET OUR

STUDENTS Andriy Zhylov initially joined the Access to HE course because he was interested in a career in Nursing but as his confidence grew so did his ambitions. He has now secured a place at university to study Radiotherapy. Andriy said: “I came to this country in 2003 and spent five years working as a Senior Care Assistant in a nursing home. I wanted to move to a new level and see new horizons but my qualifications wouldn’t allow me to work for the NHS in this country. “I did some research on the courses available and this one appealed to me because it was part-time and would fit in with work. It’s also great for more mature students as it is taught in separate modules and is less daunting for people who have been out of education for a while. “It felt good to be back in a classroom and to see like minded people and to talk to people with the same aspirations. I realised I enjoyed study and it gave me a real boost. The teachers are really good and very encouraging and inspiring “I was jubilant to get my offer from university and if it hadn’t been for the course I would never have got there.”

Former Dental Technician Ben Biddle was looking for a career change following an accident, and decided to consider teaching. The 27-year-old enrolled on his Level 2 NVQ in Learning Support at City of Wolverhampton College and quickly found work as an assistant at a special school. He has now moved onto his Foundation Degree at university and is certain he will soon realise his dream of becoming a primary school teacher. Ben said: “The course was brilliant and I made some fantastic friends. It was very beneficial for my work at school and underpinned my knowledge so I knew why I was following certain procedures or doing things in a certain way. The course was only one evening a week so it couldn’t have fitted in any better with work. “Because I had come from such a different career my employer could see a big change in me very quickly as the course progressed, from being very enthusiastic and gung ho to more measured and thoughtful. “Because I had been out of education for some time I was a bit worried about studying but it went really well and the help was there if you wanted it. There’s not a thing I would change about the course or the tutors. “Working in teaching is a lot of hard work but I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

In just two years Stacey Dudley has gone from having no qualifications to having an offer to study Nursing at the University of Wolverhampton, thanks to the Access to HE course. The twenty-four-yearold dreamed of being a nurse but did not have the qualifications she needed after leaving school at the age of 14, so enrolled on Access to HE. Stacey said: “After looking after my Nan and raising my little brother I realised that caring for others really appealed to me and decided to be a nurse. “I had heard really good things about the course, and it appealed to me because it seemed a short and direct way to get to university, and it was free! “It was initially a big shock to the system as I had been out of education for 10 years, but all the support was there. The tutors were so helpful and when I was thinking about quitting they helped keep me going - I wouldn’t have been able to do it without them. They have been really flexible and I was even able to sit in on other lessons if I missed one. “The college is great and has all the facilities that you need. It’s not overwhelming when you come here and you instantly feel a part of the community. “I wouldn’t have wanted to do it any other way.”

How long does it take? The length of an Apprenticeship varies depending on prior skill levels of the Apprentice, the qualification being obtained and the industry sector. Generally, Apprenticeships take a minimum of 9 months to complete. How much will I earn? The minimum wage for Apprentices is £2.65 per hour, however a recent survey showed that the average wage per week for an Apprentice is now around £170 and in some job roles around £210 per week. How is learning done through an Apprenticeship? An Apprenticeship is essentially a set of qualifications called a ‘framework’.The college provides the knowledge and develops skills while the employer provides the practical experience to put those skills to the test.Training can be classroom based or in the workplace, depending on the subject. How will I be assessed? Apprentices are assessed by a college Assessor (who has experience of working in the relevant sector) on a regular basis in the workplace. Apprentices may also study a technical certificate depending on the Apprenticeship programme which will be studied and assessed in college. What are the entry requirements? Entry to the course will be by interview, initial assessment and in some sectors, an industry test. Applying for an Apprenticeship job vacancy is just like any other job application - you will need to submit your CV or complete an application form. Candidates will then be interviewed to establish if they are the right fit for the role.

What employers say... “Apprenticeships offer young people a positive first step onto the career ladder and the chance to do a job while gaining nationally-recognised training and qualifications. “These work-based training programmes give employers access to enthusiastic, motivated individuals who are eager to learn the skills that their business really needs right from the start. In return, the apprentice gets not only practical experience and qualifications, but also a wage.” Councillor Phil Page, Cabinet Member for Schools, Skills and Learning, Wolverhampton City Council “The Apprenticeship scheme has been very successful for us and we have been really pleased with the progress of all our Apprentices. “The programme is an invaluable way of gaining staff with the specialist skills we need - our newest apprentice has only been with us a few weeks but I already know I would employ him. “It’s a low risk way of recruiting people and bringing young people into your business, and I think with rising tuition fees at university we will see a lot more young people looking to go down this route.” Simon Welch, Head of Managed Services Press Computer Systems

“Adam initially came to us on a Future Jobs Fund placement and as we liked his attitude and positivity we decided we wanted to keep him on – and the Apprenticeship scheme seemed the best option. “As a company we encourage employers to consider taking on an Apprentice to help close the skills gap, so we felt this was an ideal opportunity to practice what we preach. “Having Adam has certainly enhanced our knowledge of the scheme and we are in a better position to advise potential employers of whether it is an appropriate route for them. “The majority of Adam’s learning has taken place in the workplace. He has picked up a lot from actually being on the job and is now better equipped with the skills he needs to move forward. “We would certainly go down the Apprenticeship route again for the right role.” Lisa Nicholson, Head of Membership and Customer Services,The Black Country Chamber of Commerce

“We were really keen to invest in a young person who was looking for a career in marketing and who wanted to get a good start. “We have a high growth plan so it’s a case of bringing in the right people at the right time. With an Apprentice we can train them in how we do things and allow them to learn and pick up the skills we need as the business grows.” Adam Tipper, Commercial Director, Pressvine Worldwide Limited

She said: “The course is great and is a good blend of practical and theory. Because it runs three days a week you get a whole day building a wall. “The facilities are amazing and the tutors are great. They are really friendly and because they have been in the trade for a long time they have a lot of knowledge. “It’s good fun and I haven’t had any favouritism being a girl or asked to make anyone a cup of tea!”

Want to study Business but want more than just theory? Our new Business course, starting September, will give you the skills you need to impress an employer, progress to the next level or gain an Apprenticeship. You can combine Business with Marketing, Housing, Accounting, Customer Service or Administration and tailor the course just for you. Progress to an Apprenticeship This course will provide you with the full certificate requirements of an apprenticeship in the specialist area. If you do gain an apprenticeship, you will then only have to complete the NVQ element and will not have to come into college which will benefit both you and your employer. The NVQ element is work-based and can be assessed at work. Progress in to employment This course will equip you with at least four qualifications that will assist you when searching for a job – what employer could resist an applicant with so many skills? Progress to the next level If you complete all elements of the Business Level 2 programme and demonstrate a good attitude and commitment to your studies you will be given the opportunity to progress to level 3. Interested? Call College Direct on 01902 836000 for more information.

In the Diploma in Business Administration Level 2 course, 53% have progressed on to Level 3 courses, 20% are undertaking Legal Studies at Level 2 and 20% have gained employment. After completing the Level 1 bookkeeping course last year, Samantha Woodward has continued with her studies and enrolled on to the part time AAT level 2. The 41-year-old started the course because she is working in an accounting role with a local council. Samantha said: “The course is very relevant to my job; it covers all areas of accounting including manual bookkeeping and computerised accounting. “The lessons are really interesting, as we do a mixture of group tasks, individual assignments and test papers. “When we are set tasks to do in our own time there are no problems because there are computers available in the learning centre that have the SAGE software. “When I finish the AAT level 2, I would like to carry on to Level 3 and then Level 4, to improve my chances of promotion at work.”

Students take to the catwalk Budding Entrepreneurs Pick for local children’s charity up Tips from the Experts College students strutted their stuff for the children’s charity Promise Dreams for the second year running. Second year students on the BTEC National Level 3 in Business staged a Fashion Show event at the House of Fraser in the city centre as part of their ‘Managing a Business Event’ module course work. The event, which was held to raise funds for the children’s charity Promise Dreams, also included a raffle on the night with prizes donated by House of Fraser and Promise Dreams. Course Tutor Jaki Llewellyn said: “Students have worked extremely hard on this event - they have had meetings with managers at the House of Fraser, and one was even in the executive boardroom! “On every occasion they have acted most professionally and have been a credit to the college. They have had to take on a lot of hard work and responsibility coordinating everything, for example, auditions for models, rehearsals, communication with the store, promotion and selling tickets. “It is a fantastic achievement for them when everything finally comes together and all the hard work pays off!”

Students from City of Wolverhampton College mingled with successful entrepreneurs and business leaders when they attended the Global Entrepreneurship Congress 2012. A group of 11 business students, all of whom are thinking of setting up their own company, travelled to Liverpool to discover more about how to win in business. As part of the two day trip, the students were able to hear from one of Britain’s most successful entrepreneurs, Sir Richard Branson, along with other political figures and corporate leaders who shared their insights into business brilliance. Lecturer Jaki Llewellyn said: “The trip was a fantastic opportunity for our students, and Richard Branson in particular was truly inspirational. “Events like this help inspire our students, develop an entrepreneurial mindset and encourage them to unleash their ideas and turn dreams into reality.” Hosted by Liverpool Vision, Global Entrepreneurship Week and The Kauffman Foundation, the five-day conference was held at the ECHO Arena and BT Convention Centre from March 12 to 16.

Farsana Jamll, aged 31, was looking to improve her ESOL numeracy skills but wanted to study in the community near to her children’s school. Farsana said: “I chose this course because the class was very convenient for me and the class start and finish times fitted in well with picking up my children from school. “The numeracy lessons have made things so much easier for me, especially when my younger children ask me to help them with their maths homework.”

After enrolling on the college’s Introduction to Care course Hashmat Tambe was delighted to be offered her first job in care. The 53-year-old, who used to work in a petrol station, had decided to pursue a career as a personal care assistant after giving up her job to look after an elderly lady. However, when she had applied for jobs she had found it difficult as although she had some experience, many employers wanted someone with qualifications. Hashmat thought that this would be a very difficult as she left school at 17 and has not been in any type of education since. As coming to college seemed a big step she thought it would be a good idea to join the Introduction to Care course in the community. She said: “This course has helped me a lot, and it has made it a lot easier for me to get on the job ladder - I am starting a job in care next week.” “I was initially very nervous about beginning the course but this wasn’t a problem once I started my class as the teacher was brilliant and very helpful - she made it very easy to approach her and ask questions.”

Sardara Singh had been unemployed since 2005 and joined an Introduction to Care course in the community to help him find a job. The 50-year-old said: “It’s easier to find work if you have qualifications. It’s a good course and easy to understand. The tutors are very good and helpful and I’m hoping to go on to do the next level.”

Ignace Matudidi, aged 43, is studying on the Introduction to Care course at the South Wolverhampton and Bilston Academy. He is currently unemployed and thought the course would be a good way of getting back into work. He wants to work in a care home, so has now decided to progress onto the part time Health and Social Care level 1 course starting in September. Ignace said: “I have been very happy doing this course and I have made some lovely new friends.”

Suman Kora is a 32-year-old housewife, who came to live in England 10 years ago. She started her Literacy and Numeracy community classes to help build her confidence in meeting new people and chose a community location as it was just two minutes from her home. Suman said: “Now that my children are at school, community classes are far more convenient for me, as I don’t have to rely on other people to take and pick them up from school.” As her children grow up Suman wants to continue with her classes and would like to learn how to use a computer, so that one day she can get a job in an office.

Gloria Osamudiamen arrived in England in 2006 but found it difficult to find any work. To improve her chances of getting a job Gloria completed several community classes run by the college, including IT, ESOL and literacy courses. The 26-year-old is currently enrolled on to a Customer Services course at the North East Wolverhampton Academy. She said: “I really enjoy the community courses the college offers. They are convenient for me to get to and the groups are always well run, organised and friendly. “I am three weeks into the course already, and we have covered dress code, how to respond to customers and CV writing. “I feel this is the start of something good for me as it is the first step on ladder to achieving my long term goal of working within the retail trade as a customer service advisor.”

Mother-of-six Nicola Redford is currently studying on the Introduction to Mental Health Level 1course at the SWB Academy. The 29-year-old said: “I have done a couple of courses in the community and I have found them very relevant and interesting. “These types of courses have given me the opportunity to meet new people, as well as giving me a lot more self confidence. “I would now like to start an access to nursing course in college in September, as I would like to show my children that you can achieve your ambitions, and then hopefully, in the future they will follow my example.”

After leaving school at 15 with no qualifications, 55-year-old Lorraine Blake thought it would be a good time to improve her skills. She decided to enrol on the NCFE Health and Social Care for Young People and Adults course at the local children’s centre as she wanted to be close to home and felt a little nervous about doing something new. She said: “This course is really good for people doing something new, as it is a good way to make friends and improve your confidence. It also helps you stay in touch with your community and made me feel involved.” Now that Lorraine has restarted her education she would like to move on to a childcare course and hopefully work in a children’s nursery in the future. Sukhwinder Padda 35 likes coming to the community classes at her local children’s centre because it is near to where she lives and the class times fit in well with her children’s school. Sukhwinder said: “I have completed a couple of courses at the children’s centre, which have helped me pick up a range of new skills and given my confidence a big boost.”

Melissa Evans enrolled on the Introduction to Care course to help her find work in the care sector. The 27-year-old used to work for a care agency but found they did not offer her the qualifications that would help her further her career. She said: “I like studying in the community as it is a small group which helps you learn – it is especially helpful for me as I have dyslexia. “Studying this course has helped me decide that I would like to work in Mental Health. “Our tutor is lovely and I wouldn’t change her for the world. She is so patient and understanding. “I would certainly recommend the course to others.”

Grace Thompson wanted to work in the care sector with the elderly, and as a housewife with young children chose to study near to home on the NCFE Health and Social Care for Young People and Adults course at her local children’s centre. Grace said: “The course fits around my other commitments, such as picking the children up from school and it is near to where I live. “I have had a really good time learning the skills I need to help me get a job in the future.” Grace added that she had enjoyed the course so much, that she would definitely enrol on the Level 2 Health and Social when the course had finished.

Thirty-six-year-old Steven Platt left school with no qualifications and after being made redundant from his job as a fencer decided it was time to gain his qualifications and change career. Steven, who is studying Level 1 Numeracy and Literacy, said: “It’s nice to have lessons in the community centre as I am used to coming here anyway. “At first it was a bit daunting as having no qualifications I thought everyone would be looking at me, but no one did - no one judges anyone as you are all in the same boat. “The course is really good and I don’t want it to end. The tutor has been brilliant and the group is like a little family as everyone knows each other. “I have already used my new skills in the supermarkets to see if I am getting a good deal!” Shamaiza Zahoor had been a little nervous about joining a college course, so thought it might be a good idea to start her studies in the community somewhere close to where she lived. Shamaiza had young children and initially felt a bit apprehensive about leaving them in childcare - she felt much better when she realised that the children would be looked after in the room next door to her. The 24-year-old said: “I joined the ESOL Numeracy class to help me when I am shopping; it is so much easier now when adding up the prices and making sure I have the right change. “Everyone is very friendly in my class. The tutor is very understanding and explains things well. “I want to continue with my education next year and I now feel confident enough to improve my English in college.”

Kim Dainty, aged 35, enrolled on the Introduction to Health, Social Care and Early Years as she felt it would help her find a job. She said: “I’m a single mom and looking to start my career. I chose to study in the community because when you have three kids and trying to organise childcare I just wouldn’t have been able to go to college. When I started here I could use the crèche and I knew I was there for my children if they needed me. “It’s a small class and everyone gets on. The course is great because you are learning new things all the time and it’s interesting. “I was quite shy before I started the course and I have really come out of my shell.”

Jamie Handley, aged 20, is studying for his Foundation Degree in Interactive Computing at college, because it was cheaper than going straight to university. He said: “I chose the Foundation Degree because it was more cost effective to begin a Foundation Degree at college and then top it up to a full degree at university. “There are also smaller class sizes and more one to one time. “The course has been great so far and the support provided by the teachers has been the best aspect as it helps learners that have difficulty coping in larger classes. It gives you a lot more confidence as everyone knows each other. “I hope to go on to complete a Computer Science and Multimedia degree at the University of Wolverhampton.”

Media and music students flew out on March 31, and spent time working on local Florentine newspapers, providing photography and video for media production companies and assisting in music recording studios. A group of art and design and performing arts students then followed in their footsteps and jetted out on April 14, and are now putting their talents to practice by making designs for t-shirts, writing blogs for a promotional website, curating photography exhibitions,

designing games and interior design. The performing arts students have been participating in workshops including those in dance, movement and acting. Assistant Head of School for Creative Arts Elke Theissl said: “This has been a unique opportunity for students to gain vital professional experience working with real companies in their field and acquiring skills that cannot be taught in a class room, as well as learning about a different culture while experiencing it first hand.” All the students took part in cultural and language workshops in preparation for the placements. ANDRE’S CAREER SUCCESS When Andre Lewis was made redundant in the summer of 2011, after 30 years employment with the Express and Star newspaper he did not know where to turn. He met with the College Employability Team for advice and guidance to get back into work – little did he know it would result in a complete career change and a job as retail manager for a local charity! The Employability Team supported Andre with job searching and his CV and he soon started work with a major confectionery manufacturer. Unfortunately the work was seasonal and he was laid off in Spring 2012 with a view to restarting in July 2012. Andre had enjoyed this work but needed more, so he returned to the Employability Team. Being unemployed again Andre enrolled onto a short three week Retail course, which covered all aspects of retail including customer service, security, stock maintenance and health and safety. Andre updated his CV to include his new skills and set about to job searching with his new found knowledge. He was delighted to be offered a job as Assistant Retail Manager with Compton Hospice. Andre said “City of Wolverhampton College’s Employability Team have been a great help to me from start to finish. “They pointed me to the right courses, helped with my CV and given me the qualifications to get a job. “They have put me in a position now where I can apply for the jobs I could not normally do and it has been a real success for me. I took the Retail course with Ian Randall and with his help passed.”

Gjelosh Dragaj came to England from Albania in 1998 and was always able to find work until he was made redundant last year. The 31-year-old decided to retrain and joined a 20 week Bricklaying course as part of the opportunities the college’s Employability department have available. Gjelosh, who has been learning both the practical and theory elements of bricklaying, said: “I am so pleased to have had this opportunity to learn these new skills. I get on well with the tutor and I have made many new friends.” “When this course finishes, I will be able to start the Level 2 Bricklaying course in September. This will not be a problem if I am still not working, as because it is a parttime evening course I am still available for work during the day and it won’t affect my entitlement to benefits.”

Jobs Boost for Students

Care students at City of Wolverhampton College are celebrating after gaining jobs before their course had even finished. Four students on the Care for All course, an eight week course that gives people the skills they need to find employment in the care sector, found work in the industry. Former secretary Dee Stockdale had been unemployed since 2004 when she moved to England from South Africa. The 49-year-old had gained numerous qualifications in a bid to find work, but it was not until she enrolled on the Care for All Course that she was successful. Dee said: “I thought this was just another course but as I started doing it I realised this was the line of work I was supposed to be in. I was delighted to find work at Accord Housing’s Showell Court scheme and have already recommended the course to others.” Former plasterer Mark Pearce, aged 45, joins Dee as a carer at Showell Court while Anthony Hood, 32, has found work at Accord Housing in Wombourne and 38-year-old Lorrette Fletcher has been offered a job as an Escorting Carer for Heath Town Welfare Project. Lorrette said: “I had worked in care in the past but had been unemployed for about a year when I joined the course, which I thought would update my skills and improve my chances of finding work.” The part time course Care for All includes two qualifications – the BTEC Work Skills Level 1 Award and the NCFE Level 1 Award in Introduction to Health, Social Care, Children and Young People’s Settings. Chris Jones, CEO at C&G, Nicholas Rose, winner of the FE Learner and the Outstanding Achiever of the Year Award, Alex Jones, TV presenter. A former student from City of Wolverhampton College has been named FE Learner of the Year in recognition of his outstanding achievements as an Apprentice. Former student Nicholas Rose, aged 20, was awarded the accolade at City & Guilds’ prestigious Lion Awards, which were held at London’s iconic Roundhouse on March 15. He was also selected as Outstanding Achiever of the Year, out of all the other award winners. He was presented with his award by star of The One Show and Strictly Come Dancing, Alex Jones. Nicholas, who followed an Apprenticeship scheme with MetSkill and the City of Wolverhampton College, gained his Welding and Fabrication Level 2 and 3 qualifications while a student, consistently achieving exceptional results. Out of the six elements required for his technical certificate, Nicholas achieved four distinctions. He has shown a strong ability to adapt to changing circumstances and is renowned for his attention to detail, dedication to his work, and excellent customer service. As well as completing his apprenticeship, he has seen success in a number of competitions – a sign of his exceptional talents. Speaking about his win, Nicholas said: “I didn’t expect to win a Lion Award and I didn’t know that I had been nominated for anything

until I saw myself on the screen. I turned to my mum in amazement and said ‘that’s me’. Later on in the evening I was sat there enjoying the evening thinking I had my award, when it came to the last award of the night, the Outstanding Achiever of the Year. They described the winner and in the back of my head I thought it sounded like me, but I didn’t think I could be the winner. Chris then read out my name and I couldn’t believe it. I remember seeing the look on my family’s face, seeing how proud they were.” The college’s Director of the Faculty of Technology Mike Hughes said: “We are incredibly proud of Nick and all that he has achieved. The decision by the college to maintain and develop its Welding and Fabrication facility when many Midland colleges closed these departments was really fortunate for Nick. The college has invested £250,000 in the last three years to make our centre the best in the region. “We work with a number of training providers, providing technical certificates and practical training. These include DSG, EEF, Mercia Management, HS Marston, MITIE, Sandwell Training Association, SEMTA, Total People, Bridgnorth Aluminium Ltd and Campus Veolia.” Now in its tenth year, the Lion Awards celebrate the country’s most inspiring achievers who have accomplished extraordinary results through practical learning.

” “ENGINE With Jaguar Landrover coming to the city, 700 new engineering and manufacturing jobs will be created by 2014. Gaining your qualification now means you could be ready to gain employment at this prestigious car manufacturer.

Daniel Dallaway initially wanted to work as a Car Mechanic as he had a hobby of restoring engines for American Muscle cars from the 1970s. He decided that for this type of work mechanical engineering would be a better option. He also thought the course could be useful in teaching him how to refurbish and look after the different parts of the big Dodge Plymouth V8 engines. Daniel, aged 18, said: “The course is very relevant to the work I want to do in the future, and I would say is approximately 60% practical study and 40% theory based. “The tutors are very knowledgeable and friendly and I get on well with the others in the group. “When I have finished this course I plan to go le onto the Level 3 to help build on the knowledge I availab ge see pa have already acquired.”

NEW Engineering Zone for the Paget Road Campus A new £400,000 Engineering block is being opened at City of Wolverhampton College to help give students the skills they need to find work. Spa Students Sweep the Board

Three talented students from City of Wolverhampton College are among the top beauticians in the country after sweeping the board at a leading skills competition. Lisa Frost, aged 22, Victoria Cole, 18, and Elizabeth Andrews, 17, picked up gold, silver and bronze in Advanced Beauty Therapy in the regional heats of the UK World Skills Competition, which were held in Liverpool earlier this month. As part of the competition each student was up against the clock to complete a number of treatments under the watchful

eyes of judges. These included a body faradic treatment, a back massage and a facial microdermabrasion treatment. Assistant Head of School Jane McNally said: “It was a very intensive day for our students but they all performed incredibly well and we are very proud of them. The judges said that they were all outstanding and that they had never known a college to pick up all three awards before. “The highest 12 scorers in the country are called back for the national finals, so it is very likely that Lisa will be called

back and possibly the other two.” Lisa, who was awarded a silver medal in the 2012 national finals, said: “The competition was nerve racking but I really enjoyed it and can’t believe I came first.” The trainee Spa therapists now have the chance to progress and could even go on to represent the UK at World Skills 2013 in Leipzig. City of Wolverhampton College runs a range of courses in Spa Therapy and Beauty. For more information ring College Direct on 01902 836000.

Michaela said: “I feel that I now have all the knowledge I could possibly need for the hair dressing industry.” “This year we learnt more advanced techniques, I particularly feel more confident in colouring hair now.” “I have also entered the FG Francessa competition and I managed to get through to the final stages.”

ur Hair and Beauty department consists of around 450 students, who work in some of our most impressive facilities. Beauty students learn their trade at our Metro One campus, in the heart of the city, and hone their skills by working with real clients in our state-of-the-art beauty salon. The college also runs two modern hairdressing training salons, supported by Francesco Group, where students provide a professional hairdressing service under the guidance of staff. Meanwhile Spa students have the opportunity to work in our brand new Spa Academy, situated in our Community Sports Centre. The spa, boasting a Jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and treatment rooms allows students on our new full and parttime spa therapy courses to carry out specialised techniques in a commercial environment. The school participates in local community events and fashion show support, as well as taking part in national competitions for World Skills. This year has been a particularly successful one for the school, after students scooped first, second and third place in the second year college category of the Francesco Photographic Competition 2012, made it through to the Midlands finals of the Wella Trend Vision Awards, qualified as a finalist for the L’Oréal Professional Colour Trophy 2012, and were announced as the monthly winners of the BaByliss PRO Student Style Awards 2012 for both March and April. On top of that, three spa students picked up gold, silver and bronze in Advanced Beauty Therapy in the regional heats of the UK World Skills Competition.

Kind-hearted students at City of Wolverhampton College have raised more than £1,000 for sick children after organising a charity beautyathon. The Beauty students raised £1,300 for New Cross Hospital’s Neonatal unit and Birmingham Children’s Hospital’s Heart Dept by offering members of the public waxing, facials and manicures as part of a weeklong beautyathon at the Metro One Campus. The Level 2 students will be presenting a cheque for just over £570 to New Cross Hospital on Thursday. Lecturer Lyndsey Tidmarsh said: “The students wanted to raise money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital’s heart department to show their support for one of their classmates who currently attends the hospital after undergoing a heart operation five years ago. “They also chose New Cross Hospital to receive some of the cash. “We were delighted with how successful the event was, with our clientele really digging deep to support such a worthy cause.”

After helping people in her local area for quite a while Carol Davies felt it would be a good idea to take some qualifications to go with the experience that she had already gained. She enrolled on the Introduction to Counselling Level 1 course at one of the college’s community based locations because she felt that the 10 week programme would give her a good introduction to counselling. Carol said: “My tutor was excellent and made the classes fun, appealing and interesting. I really enjoyed doing the counselling course. “Since completing that course, I have enrolled on another short course in the community and I have now been offered a place on the Level 3 counselling starting at college in September.”

Reena Kaur, aged 27, was working in a family business when she decided to make the big decision to change career and enrol on a childcare course. Reena said: “I wanted to work with young people and thought this would be a good start because it would open up so many opportunities. “The course has been really, really good and I have got so much information from it. “You learn a lot through placements and the experience helps you decide what you want to do. Now I know I would like a career in social work and am hoping to go to university to complete a degree. “The tutors are excellent and help you out in every way and understand individual needs. I thought it was going to be so hard being in a classroom with people 10 years younger than me but I have had the best time of my life!”

Eighteen-year-old Gurdeesh Malhi left school because she felt college would be a good stepping stone on her route to University. Gurdeesh, who is studying Health and Social Care, said: “College has helped me prepare for University and I have learnt lots of new skills such as referencing, good time management and how to work independently, as I know these are very important at university level. “As part of the course we have been on placements and I was lucky enough to do mine at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.” “My tutors and the guidance team were very helpful when I applied for university - there was always someone to talk and to advise on all aspects of the application process. “After working hard and achieving good grades I will be going to Oxford Brookes University in September.”

Business Students Raise Thousands for Care Home

Students from City of Wolverhampton College put their business brains to the test when they hosted two charity events for a Wolverhampton care home. The students, who are all studying part-time for their Foundation Degree in Business Management in partnership with Wolverhampton University, organised the fundraisers in aid of St Anthony’s Cheshire Home, Stourbridge Road, a care home for people with physical disabilities. One group organised a Wacky Races style charity event at Linden House on the Tettenhall Road, where families watched the Wacky Races cartoon and bet on which character they thought would win the race, raising £2,038. A second group raised £1518 through a live band night at The Varsity pub. Pub-goers enjoyed

band All Funked Up and had the chance to win an Audi R8 for the weekend. Tutor Julian Hollington said: “The events formed part of the students’ creativity and entrepreneurship module. “They have done a tremendous job and raised a huge amount of money. In fact, out of 40 groups from the university, our students came first and second for fundraising, with one group setting a new record for the enterprise module!” Service Manager at St Anthony’s Cheshire Home Rose Willetts said: “What these students have done is fantastic and they have put in a huge amount of work.” She added the money would go towards a conservatory which the service users had asked for.

Former student Chris Shein is now working as a freelance video producer after gaining his media and video production qualifications at City of Wolverhampton College. Chris, who studied at the college for four years, gaining his National Diploma in Media Production and Foundation Degree in Commercial Video Production, said: “I have been trained to work in a multi-camera studio environment, on location and in video editing. I have also gained an understanding of the principles of advertising and marketing theory. Possibly one of the most important things I have learned was the significance of being a team player and to be able to deal with pressured situations.” While on the course, Chris undertook a work placement with Mediacove Production – the college’s very own media production unit. “The job started as a work placement,” he added, “and then became a freelance position where I practiced my skills on various corporate projects. I have enjoyed working on live projects alongside professionals. It gave me a great insight into the industry.” Chris has now completed his BA (Hons) in Film and Video Production and has undertaken further placements at BBC Drama Village and Maverick TV.

Former Student Launches News Website A former student from City of Wolverhampton College has launched her own website to help aspiring writers get their voice heard. Harvy Matharu, who completed her NCTJ Journalism training at the college, has launched NewsScoop, a news website delivering the very latest buzz from within the social media and technology world, quirky lifestyle features and interviews with a dazzling array of celebrities and prominent figures. The digital hub, which launched in January 2012, aims to help writers showcase their journalistic skills in a fiercely competitive media world, and has already attracted an array of site bloggers who have shared their insights about fashion, music and the pitfalls of job-hunting to how social media controls us. Harvy said: “NewsScoop is a unique digital hub where readers, no matter what they are interested in, can scoop their daily news. “The site is an exciting new venture, which enhances the demand for interesting, diverse, news on the go. We also want to welcome aspiring bloggers who have a desire to establish their name and work. “The in-depth and practical NCTJ course at City of Wolverhampton College really helped me establish my ambition towards creating an online, editorial site where readers can simply ‘scoop’ whatever story interests them. “We have already scooped dazzling interviews with Mitzeee from Hollyoaks, Ruth Badger from The Apprentice, KicFM’s Kenny Mach and popstar Jay Sean.” Visit the site at www.newsscoop.co.uk Teaching Assistant Alison Dudley is studying for her Foundation Degree in Supporting Children in Primary Education in order to help her progress in her career. The 44-year-old said: “I enjoy the teaching environment but want to do something more and thought this would give me a good foundation to explore different possibilities as it opens up a lot of avenues. “The course has been very informative and it’s given me a greater insight into what I am doing at work. I’m much more confident and my manager says it shows. “The older you get the more you feel you can’t learn new things or integrate with other students, but you can. Everyone here has been so welcoming I felt part of the community straight away.

The HE Centre is lovely and it’s so nice to come in and make yourself a coffee before lessons start - I use it a lot. The course is really enjoyable and I would recommend it to anyone.

Every week 21-year-old Jessica Wells makes the 130 mile round trip from Market Harborough, Leicestershire, to attend her part time Level 3 floristry classes at The Cedars. She was recommended to do the course by her manager at the florist’s shop where she currently works. Jessica said: “We all get on really well at the Cedars campus and it is like a ‘little family.’ The tutor is very approachable and can’t do enough to help and she always has creative ideas for us. “The course is very varied and we have learnt many different techniques including plant work, wedding work and different styles of floristry. “While I have been at college I have entered the BFA WorldSkills UK Floristry Competition. To take part in the competition I was required to take a piece of work that I had previously made at college, and then in front of the judges I was observed making another piece. “The Level 3 Floristry course prepares students for all types of work in the floristry industry. It not only gives you the practical skills needed, but also gives you the business knowledge required.”

T

After beating cancer Matt Davies, aged 29, wanted to do something new and different so he decided to start up his own business in Landscaping. Matt enrolled on to the part time Level 3 Horticulture course last September to gain more extensive knowledge in the area of landscaping and garden design. He then also sort help from The Prince’s Trust Enterprise programme which gave him the business advice and some funding to start his business Purple Lavender Landscaping. Matt said:

Starting my new business and coming to college, has given me a whole new future to look forward to, I have made many new friends while I have been at the Cedars.

From left to right: Jo Lester and Jackie Cocken, both from the Arboretum User Group, Darren Rudge from City of Wolverhampton College, Sam Mills, Green Space Improvement Co-ordinator, Helen Wood, from City of Wolverhampton College.

College’s Arboretum Plans Unveiled Lecturers at City of Wolverhampton College have unveiled their ambitious plans for part of Walsall Arboretum’s new Gallery Garden. As part of the Arboretum’s £50,000 project, Horticultural lecturers Darren Rudge and Helen Wood, from the college’s Cedars Horticultural Centre, have been invited to design a contemporary garden space to be viewed by members of the public. Their innovative design, entitled Keys, was presented to Jackie Cocken and Jo Lester of the Arboretum User Group in May. The design incorporates a number of sculptural elements; doorways, locks and keys, linked with a random stone path. These are symbolic of barriers and opportunities. Darren said: “Our brief was to showcase garden design as art, so the plans are very conceptual and feature elements of sculpture, including a metal box containing a jumble of keys. “The garden can mean different things to different people – for some it may be unlocking

the doors to your own potential while others may see the links to Willenhall and its industrial heritage.” Jo Lester said: “It’s absolutely inspirational and everything we were hoping for when we first approached the college. We knew we would get something really exciting and they have more than lived up to our expectations.” Jackie Cocken added: “I’m really excited by the design and the potential it holds - we already have activities planned to inspire young visitors and get them outdoors.” Darren and Helen are no strangers to design work and are regulars at the prestigious BBC Gardener’s World Live Show, picking up a gold medal and ‘Best in Show’ at last year’s event. Around 20 Horticultural students will be assisting with the planting and construction, and have already started levelling the site, while engineering students will create the metal sculptures.

Students Dig in for Gardening Show Students from City of Wolverhampton College are digging in as they prepare to take centre stage at this year’s BBC Gardeners World Live show. Horticultural students Brian Trubshaw, Phil Simmonds and Gemma Askew have entered show gardens into the Birmingham Borders competition at the annual event, which takes place at the NEC from June 13 to 17. The competition allows horticultural students and budding gardeners to experience the design, planning and build of a horticultural exhibit in a show environment, without the large financial and resource commitment of a show garden. Brian Trubshaw, aged 18, who is being sponsored by Dobbies Garden Centre, is hoping to wow judges with his Indiana Jones inspired design. Indiana Jones’ Jungle Adventure features a hat dropped by a waterfall by the hapless adventurer and densely planted shrubs and grasses evoking the feel of a jungle. Thirty-eight-year old Phil Simmonds, who is seeking sponsorship for his garden, has entered the competition with a design entitled Aztec. His border looks at how the year 2012 signalled the start of a golden era to the Mayans, but has been misinterpreted by some to point to the end of the world. Golden and yellow hues dominate the garden, while an Aztec water temple powered by the sun hints at environmental issues. Gemma Askew, aged 29, has based her design on her own experiences of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. She said: “The things that are important to me are the numbers three and five, and symmetry, so that is reflected in my design, with five varieties of beans on five obelisks and vegetables neatly planted in rows of threes.” The students are all based at the college’s Cedars Horticultural Centre.

CITY OF WOLVERHAMPTON COLLEGE | 01902 836000 | www.wolvcoll.ac.uk

The students are all very excited about showcasing their work in front of the thousands of people that visit the show, and have come up with some really exciting designs. Lecturer, Darren Rudge

Training Centre Celebrates 1000th Customer Milestone! The Polymer Training and Innovation Centre (PTIC) in Telford has welcomed its 1000th customer after opening two years ago. Trainee setter Alan Marrison, from Norwich-based UCP Zeller, became the 1000th in-house course delegate when he arrived for a two day Injection Moulding Appreciation course at the Telford-based training centre. He said: “The course has been very informative and has added to my knowledge.” The PTIC opened its doors in April 2010 after City of Wolverhampton acquired the assets and IP of Telford provider Polymer Training Limited (PTL) in December, when it went into administration. Since then it has grown into an international centre of learning, being accredited as the first National Skills Academy for the Polymer Industry and attracting big name clients including Unilever, Honda, BPI, RPC and Calsonic. Jonathan Edwards, the Health, Safety and Training Manager at UCP Zeller has been sending staff to the PTIC since June 2011 and says it forms an integral part of their training. As well as the Injection Moulding Appreciation course, employees have attended courses in

Shokryah Mohammed, aged 18, has been living in England with her family for the past four years. When she first came to this country she initially started at a secondary school, but soon found it difficult to keep up with the others because her English was weak. Shokryah thought it would be a good idea to come to college to improve her English because it would be the first step on the ladder to eventually qualifying as a Pharmacist in the future. After initially completing an ESOL programme last year, Shokryah was ready to do her GCSE connect programme at the Paget Road campus. Shokryah said: “My favourite subject at the moment is Science. We are studying the Double award and I particularly enjoy Chemistry as this is something that really interests me. “We do both theory and practical exercises in our lessons and the teacher always make it interesting. “College has been very good for me. I have made lots of friends and it has given me a good background in the subjects that I want to pursue in the future. “Next year I will do A levels at the college and hopefully I will go to University to study Pharmaceutical Science.”

Learning Express allows you the possibility of gaining a qualification in a short period of time depending on the results of your skills check. Access to Further Education and forge a career as a probation officer. The mother of three could barely write a sentence when she enrolled at the college and her confidence and self belief had reached rock bottom. However, through sheer determination and with the help and support of tutors, she has not only learnt to read and write but is planning to move on to a degree - all in the space of a few years! Sulita said: “I didn’t have a lot of schooling when I was younger and couldn’t even write a sentence. When I enrolled at college on the Access to Further Education Course they diagnosed me with dyslexia, which explained everything.”

The college was amazing. I started studying Numeracy, Literacy and ICT and even had special weekly dyslexia classes. I’m hoping to move on to a degree before embarking on a career in probation work, working with offenders and young people. I’m excited about the future and what it will hold, but if it wasn’t for my tutors I wouldn’t be where I am today.

PRINCE f you are aged 16-25 and live in the Black Country there’s a full-time Prince’s Trust Team Programme for you, run by City of Wolverhampton College.

I

Young People Dig in to Create Sensory Garden

The Prince’s Trust team is a full-time 12 week programme made up of: Week 1 - Introductions Meet the other young people who have joined the programme.

Week 2 - Residential Outdoor activities, such as rock climbing, abseiling and raft building to enable you to develop your team-building skills.

Weeks 3, 4, 5 & 6 - Community Project Choose a local community project, plan and fund-raise to see what a difference your hard work can make.

Weeks 7 & 8 - Work Placements A work placement in the area of work that interests you.

Week 9 - Next Steps CVs, interview techniques, mock interviews and job search.

Weeks 10 & 11 - Final Team Challenge Put your team-building skills to use and spend time with people in your community.

Week 12 - Presentation Your chance to show everyone who has supported you exactly what you have achieved over the past 12 weeks. At the end of the programme you not only come out with the Prince’s Trust Certificate in Employment, Teamwork and Community Skills - the programme also provides you with a host of certificates that are useful in the workplace. They range from Appointed Person’s First Aid to Food Safety and Catering and a Safety Certificate from West Midlands Fire Service. There’s training in putting together your CV, interview techniques and job search skills. The programme has all the equipment supplied and help with travel expenses. It doesn’t affect your entitlement to benefits: if you are on Jobseekers’ Allowance you can continue to sign on, although you must notify the Jobcentre that you are on the programme.

Where can I do it? The college is the main delivery partner for the Prince’s Trust Team Programme in the Black Country. Teams are run from Wolverhampton (Bilston and Central Wolverhampton), Walsall (Brownhills and Central Walsall), Dudley (Sedgley, Wordsley, Halesowen), Sandwell (Smethwick, Tipton and Wednesbury), Telford and Shrewsbury. Approximately three Team programmes per year are run from each location.

A group of young people from across Walsall have dug in to create an outdoor play area for school pupils in Bentley. The team of 10 students, who are all on a Prince’s Trust Programme delivered by City of Wolverhampton College, have transformed a wooded area at King Charles Primary School, Wilkes Avenue, into a sensory garden. As well as clearing the grounds and cutting down trees the students have created a gravel path, and laid down bark and logs for seating.

The team raised the £500 needed for the project by completing a bag pack at Asda and holding a talent evening at Bentley Moor Social Club. Team Leader Jane Littlehales said: “The group have worked their socks off on the garden and have done a fantastic job. They have made a lasting improvement here that will benefit all the pupils – the garden will be the perfect spot for pupils to relax and learn in beautiful surroundings.”

Students Give New Lease of Life to Community Centre Students from City of Wolverhampton College have rolled up their sleeves to give a new lease of life to a community centre in Ettingshall. The students, who are all on a 12 week Prince’s Trust Team Programme, spent two weeks painting walls and transforming the former Evcap Centre, John Street, into a bright and airy building. The centre will now be used by community group The Light, who organise activities and events for local residents. Secretary of The Light, Alaina Allen, who was on the Princes Trust programme herself in 2010, said: “We couldn’t have done the work by ourselves so we are very grateful for all their help. “We are looking to arrange a number of classes from the centre, including cooking and exercise, which will be open to everyone although we are primarily hoping to attract young people.” The team raised the cash needed to fund the project beforehand by doing a bag pack at Iceland in Bilston and a sponsored walk, raising £350 in total.

E’S TRUST Young people meet Wanderers star Wolverhampton Wanderers’ player, Matt Jarvis, lent a hand to a group of students undertaking a Prince’s Trust programme in their bid to raise money to benefit the local community. The midfielder, who last year scooped the Supporters’ and Players’ Player of the Year awards, took time out to help the young people complete a fundraising bag-pack at Iceland so they can carry out a community project to benefit a local community centre. The young people are taking part on The Trust’s Team programme - a 12-week personal development course which gives them the skills and confidence to find a job. Matt, who has been announced as a Prince’s Trust ambassador this week, said: “With youth unemployment continuing to rise, I am proud to be named an Ambassador for The Trust. Their work is vital in ensuring vulnerable young people get the support they need to turn their lives around. Being here today to help the group raise as much money as possible is a true honour.” Paul Beesley, regional director for The Prince’s Trust in the West Midlands, added:”It’s fantastic to have Matt here today to meet the young people. He is an inspirational player on the pitch and he has really helped to motivate the young people on the course today.”

Prince’s Trust Awards for Youngsters Young people from City of Wolverhampton College were recognised for turning their lives around at a special awards evening in Walsall. Eleven students were presented with their certificates at Wednesbury Fire Station after overcoming personal circumstances to complete a 12 week Prince’s Trust programme. They were cheered on by George Martin, Prince’s Trust Fire and Rescue Service’s National Liaison Officer, and more than 100 friends, family members and support workers, along with representatives from the college and West Midlands Fire Service. As part of the programme the team spent two weeks on a community project with British Waterways, helping to tidy up a stretch of canal, painting, dredging, litter picking and removing excess foliage. They raised the cash needed for the project by bag packing at Iceland and Sainsburys. Prince’s Trust Manager Kieron Weatherstone said: “Every single presentation is a pleasure to attend and we hear real stories of real young people putting in a tremendous amount of hard work to move their lives forward.”

Student Makes a Splash A sports student from City of Wolverhampton College made a splash when he picked up a bronze medal at a national swimming event. Luke Eccleston, who is studying for a BTEC National Level 3 Diploma in Sports, was awarded the medal at the British Colleges Sport (BCS) National Championships, which took place at the University of Bath recently. The 18-year-old was chosen to represent the region as part of the West Midlands men’s swimming squad following swimming trials at the Royal Wolverhampton School. He competed in the men’s 200m front crawl and 50m front crawl. Luke said: “It was a great experience and there was some good competition. This is my last year as part of the team as I am moving onto university so it has been nice to go out with a bang.” Luke spent 20 hours doing pool training each week and 10 hours in the gym to help him prepare for the championship. The BCS National Championships take place once a year during the spring term and are one of biggest annual multi-sport events in the UK. Each year more than 2500 students and staff from all over the UK meet up for sporting competition in 15 different sports.

46

Kashif Hussian used to work as a Sports Coach until he was made redundant. The 25-year-old wants to broaden his horizons by combining the skills he already has in coaching with the new knowledge he has acquired from The Fitness Instructor 12 week programme run by the Employability team. Kashif, who is 25, said: “The course is well run and everyone gets on well. The tutors are very flexible and the times of the classes are very convenient. “We have covered lots of different areas of fitness and the course is about 50% practical and 50% theory. I have learnt some new things while on the course including Anatomy and Physiology. “We also get to use the gym and the Learning Centre facilities at Wellington Road campus and our bus fares are also reimbursed so we are not out of pocket. “The tutors have told us that if we do find a job while we are on the course, that this will not be a problem as they will work around this so that we can still finish the qualification.”

Michelle Talbot is a currently studying to become a Fitness Instructor at the Wellington Road campus in Bilston. She joined the 12 week course run by the Employability Programme after it was recommended to her by Pertemps in Wolverhampton. The 31-year-old said: “I am really glad I came on to this course as I have always enjoyed going to the gym, so to be able to a course in something I like so much is very rewarding. “Being the only woman on the course is not an issue, as I am treated as one of the lads and we all get on really well. “The facilities at Wellington Road campus are modern and the staff can’t do enough to help you. “When I joined the programme I was a little worried about being available for my children around school times, but the course is very flexible and this has not been a problem. “When I finish this course I would like to come back to college part-time in September and start a course in Nutrition and hopefully find a job in the fitness industry.”
