Steps to planning a successful hunt First, decide which big game species you intend to hunt: Elk, deer, bear, pronghorn and/or moose. This will help you focus on which area to pick and when to hunt because season dates differ for each. Then decide when to hunt using the Colorado Big Game Hunting Planner and the method of take to use: archery, muzzleloader or rifle. Select your hunt location. Hunt locations are refered to as game management units (GMU's). GMU's divide up the entire state. Some GMU’s have special regulations that are explained in the Big Game brochure. Public lands are abundant in Colorado and include, the United States Forest Service (USFS), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Colorado State Trust Lands and State Wildlife Areas (SWA). Terrain and access vary, so you’ll need to check with the local CPW, public lands office or theSportsman Information Specialist at the Moffat County Visitor Center for details. Examine past success rates for elk and other big game species.. View historic big game migration movements on the Colorado Hunting Atlas, available online at http://ndis.nrel.colostate.edu/hun tingatlas/ Research the preference points needed to apply for limited licenses. Colorado is the only state that offers an unlimited quantity of over-the-counter (OTC) elk licenses for two rifle seasons. These licenses cover about 50 percent of the Colorado GMU's and don't limit your hunt to one unit. They are a
great "general" license option and don't require preference points. They can be purchased until the night before the season starts.
In Colorado, an over-thecounter bull tag allows you to hunt anywhere in 92 units. Season dates include two weekends. Leftover licenses go on sale at 9
a.m. Aug. 6 for anyone looking to purchase a leftover in person or by phone. Leftovers go on sale online at midnight on August 7. GMU's are very important for hunting in Colorado. They are the areas you choose to hunt. The GMU map can be found in the back of the big game brochure or on page 6 of this publication.

Colorado big game license options Limited Licenses by Drawing
(Application Deadline is April 2.) The first opportunity to purchase big game licenses is through a lottery-like drawing. Applications are due before midnight on the first Tuesday in April, each year. Submit your application online or by mail (mail-in application comes with the Colorado Big Game Brochure; available in mid-February each year). Application allows you to request up to four hunt code choices, and other license choices.
Limited Licenses
These are big game licenses that are limited in number for specific units (GMUs) and hunting seasons. They distributed through the license application and drawing process. Youth: Youth limited licenses are available at a reduced cost. Youth can also benefit by receiving preference for many draw units. Private-Land Only Licenses: These licenses are limited in number for specific units and are to be used only on private land and State Trust Lands not leased by the Division of Wildlife. They have specific season hunt dates. You must obtain landowner permission before hunt-
ing on private land. Ranching for Wildlife Licenses: Colorado residents only may apply for these licenses through the application and drawing process for specific seasons and ranches. Each ranch has specific rules for hunting on their property; these are not private-landonly licenses. Check the Ranching for Wildlife restrictions before applying.
Leftover Draw Option
Elk and deer applicants have first choice of the limited licenses leftover from the draw by checking one of the choices under the "Leftover Draw" option box on the application. In June, you will be mailed the list of available leftover limited licenses and an application to get first choice of any of the leftover licenses before they go on sale to everyone in August. You can also opt to purchase an Over-the-Counter (OTC) license or request a refund.
Over-the-Counter Licenses
(Available starting 9 a.m. July 9) Over-the-Counter Unlimited Licenses: Antlered (bull) elk licenses available to resident and non-resident hunters for 2nd or 3rd rifle season. These licenses can be used to
hunt in 93 GMUs across Colorado. Archery: The OTC either-sex, archery, pronghorn licenses allow hunting in numerous units around the state. The applicable maps of these units are in the species sections of the brochure and can be downloaded online. Over-the-Counter Licenses with Caps: A preset number of bear, antlerless elk, and either-sex elk licenses available for specific units and specific seasons on a first-come, first-served basis for resident and non-resident hunters. OTC licenses are sold online, by phone (1-800-244-5613), at license agents, and at DOW offices around the state. OTC licenses provide you the flexibility to discover new units, scout different habitat, and, potentially, combine your elk hunt with the opportunity to hunt another species.
Leftover Limited Licenses
(Available starting 9 a.m. Aug. 6) Limited licenses remaining after the limited license draw and leftover draw processes. They are sold at license agents, CPW offices, and by phone (1-800-244-5613) and available for online purchase starting August 7.
