twenty13 The Lives Behind The Lenses

The people on the following pages are not famous, they are not obviously significant or noteworthy to the outside viewer yet they still mean the world to someone else. It is this intimate connection which drives this magazine. This year I took the opportunity to celebrate the day to day lives of those significant to the photographers of the creative commons by picking a photo from each day of the year with no purpose beyond the simple criteria of being visually arresting or providing an insight into the lives of others. I hope you enjoy these quiet moments, these reflections, these beautiful vistas, as much as I have enjoyed collecting them. Maybe not all photographs are artworks, maybe some pictures are just timestamps; a diary of time well spent or feats accomplished.

Loud mimes They were Italians, street performers working at the poverty stricken Athens of crisis. They seemed fit to the whole atmosphere. In Greece, where everything is upside down even silent mimes, rather than making expressions of sadness or happiness, could be drunk, dirty and very loud. Here they were. Aggressive mimes. The fat one made the sad and angry expression: now you pay! 2 euros. That was the cost of taking this photo. Paid in full.

Love Seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it’s not particularly dignified or newsworthy but it’s always there. Fathers and sons, mother and daughts, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. If you look for it, I’ve got a sneaky feeling you’ll find that love actually is all around.

Sweet memories ‘The Oldest Sweet Shop in England’ (Est. 1827) has the most wonderful selection of retro sweets. Flying Saucers, Black Jacks, Fruit Salads, Fizzers, Parma Violets, White Mice, Shrimps, Candy Sticks (that used to be called Sweet Cigarettes) and Giant Gobstoppers can all be bought here. The walls are lined with jars containing Rhubarb and Custards, Coconut Mushrooms, Toasted Tea Cakes and all the sweets I remember from my childhood. The gentleman looking in the window seems to be remembering them too.

La Crema Las Fallas, Valencia Spain Spring Festival, the building and burning of the Falla 15 th to 19 th March. Europe’s largest and longest street party, an exuberant, anarchic, round the clock swirl of fireworks, music, explosions and fire that brings an estimated two million visitors to the city. The more than 350 fallas are giant sculptures of papier machÊ and wood. They satirise celebrities and politicians and local customs. The cremà after midnight on 19th March is when every falla goes up in flames except for one small ninot.

Lamb rescue Walking through the fields at Wycoller one evening I met a farmer tending to his sheep. When I told him I had just seen a dead lamb he replied he had lost a lot of lambs this spring. During the coldest March for 50 years many newborn lambs died in the freezing weather. Later that evening the farmer stopped in the village to show me this lamb he was taking home with him, as its mother had too many to feed herself. He would be joining 20 more already being cared for there.

How Not To Shoot Thor’s Well So this summer, whilst idling planless in San Fracisco, I decided to try and replicate one of the epic shots of Oregon’s Thor’s Well that I see plastering the internet. That was the extent of my planning. I had a smart phone to lead me there, and hope that I would get there in time for an epic sunset. Instead, I showed up during a stormy gray evening, and spent the entire evening getting blown over by wind and water. Ended up killing two camera lenses and my 5D Mark ii. Wasn’t too sad, I have them insured (DO IT IF YOU HAVE 40$ TO SPARE!!!). I was soaked, frozen, and a little terrified after spending an evening alone on the storm blasted rock, and didn’t even get a halfway decent shot of the well. But it was still an adventure, and now I know better for next time!

God Of War And Victory Batu Caves is a 400 million year old limestone hill that has a series of caves and cave temples in the Gombak district, 13 kilometres north of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The cave is one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside India, dedicated to Lord Murugan. In Hindu mythology, Murugan is the Hindu god of breaking code. He is Commander of the gods. Murugan is worshiped primarily in areas with Tamil influences.

Chernobyl The Chernobyl Shelter Fund was established in 1997 at the Denver 23rd G8 summit to finance the Shelter Implementation Plan (SIP). The plan calls for transforming the site into an ecologically safe condition by means of stabilization of the sarcophagus followed by construction of a New Safe Confinement (NSC). While the original cost estimate for the SIP was US$768 million, the 2006 estimate was $1.2 billion. The SIP is being managed by a consortium of Bechtel, Battelle, and ElectricitĂŠ de France, and conceptual design for the NSC consists of a movable arch, constructed away from the shelter to avoid high radiation, to be slid over the sarcophagus. The NSC is expected to be completed in 2015, and will be the largest movable structure ever built.

Christmas Nothing like a bit of Christmas spirit to make everyone run around in a panic trying to buy presents to appease people close to them. Then going home and stressing over the cooking of a massive meal all the while frictions boil over between distant family relations as the Turkey burns. Well that’s if you’re a cynic. Personally I love Christmas and I enjoy helping to prepare the food and make the desserts, some people can just burn themselves out over the whole ordeal. And it is Christmas, I’m not religious but I’ll never consider it Xmas or any of that rubbish.
