100 YEARS AT STEBONHEATH PARK

Page 1

100YEARSAT STEBONHEATHPARK

BARRY TOWN V LLANELLI TOWN

A momentous occasion here today at Stebonheath Park as we take on Barry Town United for the next round of the Welsh Blood Service Cup. Not only because we relight that old rivalry once known as the battle for the Gary Lloyd Cup but because we celebrate 100 years since the Reds made Stebonheath their home

The Reds have found tremendous form as they remain unbeaten in 11 matches under manager Lee John who has made many positive changes to the squad since the summer

A tough start to the campaign for Barry Town seeing defeats at Ammanford and against Britton Ferry however a turn in fortunes as they dominate games with star striker Kyle McLaggon hitting top form. The first match at Stebonheath was Saturday 6th September 1922 and we beat Bridgend 3 1. Then on Monday 16th October we plaued Tottenham Hotspur to open the ground and won 2 1!

CATCH UP WITH SQUAD

This week we caught up with Manager Lee John to reflect on our last match versus Abergavenny Town and to see what his thoughts are on our FAW cup match v Canton Liberal.

We also caught up with star striker Tim Parker speaking about his previous time at the club and how it differs under current manager Lee John

CHAIRMANS WELCOME

WAYNE STEPHENS

WELCOME TO STEBONHEATH PARK!

Welcome to both home and away supporters and our Match Officials this evening! We hope you all enjoy what should be a cracking game here under the floodlights

A tremendous start for the club heading into the 2022/23 season Many teams going unbeaten and setting really high standards. I am delighted to see this considering the 1 Player 1 Club rule coming into effect this summer. Credit due to our Director Of Football Jonathan Garcia, Rob Griffiths and Kevin Francis who work around the club to make sure the academy runs like clockwork

I would like to thank First Choice Flooring for coming up with the Free Family Ticket Bundles to promote our club in the local community, this has really taken off on social media this week! Jason covered this himself to make sure we still had an income to cover our over heads.

A busy time for all as we slowly creep up on the Christmas period with some tough fixtures and Wales making it to the World Cup should be a fantastic time for all to enjoy the sport!

Enjoy you ' re evening and safe travels home to the Barry Town team and supporters!

Many thanks, Wayne Stephens

OUR HISTORY

The game of association football was introduced to the town’s people of Llanelly when workers from the Staffordshire area of England migrated to the town to work in the ‘newest’ of the town industries - the Pottery works from 1892 to 1920 The club initially played in the Swansea & District League playing their first matches at Cae Blake, Furnace, then the Peoples Park moving to Tunnel Road and then Penyfan Fields

In 1912 13 the club decided to become fully professional and applied for membership of both the Southern and Welsh League They also moved to a new ground, Halfway Park, a former Cycle Stadium, which was situated two miles from the town centre Their first season 1912 13 was an immediate success finishing in sixth position in the Southern League and third in the Welsh League The following season they entered into the Welsh Cup and reached the final at their first attempt before losing to Wrexham in a replay at Oswestry after the team had initially drawn 0 0 at Swansea Town Vetch Field

After the First World War the club continued to participate in the Southern League and in the Welsh League with moderate success They had ambitions of reaching the Football League and as a first step they moved to a new ground in Stebonheath in 1922 Tottenham Hotspur were the FA Cup winners of the previous season were invited to make the occasion of opening the new ground by playing the local team and the Londoners were given a rude awakening when they lost 2 1 on the day For the next three years Llanelly built up a reputation of being one of the leading non league clubs in the country, and in 1925 become the only club to contest every round in the FA Cup from Preliminary to Qualifying rounds and on to the equivalent Third Round of today when they met Fulham at Craven Cottage before losing by the odd goal

At the end of World War II with league football returning back to normality, Llanelly AFC in common with other Welsh clubs returned to the Welsh League fold and again gained a place in the Southern League succeeding Colchester United who had gained a place in the Football League This was another venture into a league blessed with ex Football League players coming to the end of their careers The manager of the time long servant Jack Goldsborough who had been a fixture in Stebo circles since 1923 as a player, trainer, coach, groundsman and secretary/manager assembled a team blessed in the main by ex Scottish League players including one John (Jock) Stein who was to find fame with Glasgow Celtic and Scotland in a managerial capacity after his playing days were over, but had made history in the FA Cup with the Reds in 50 51, before the club lost to Bristol Rovers after a 2nd replay at Ninian Park.

GARY LLOYD

Gary turned out for South Wales clubs Llanelli and Barry Town during his playing days in the Welsh domestic scene, and was a key component of the successful Barry Town side in the mid 90s and early 2000s After leaving Llanelli in 1994, he played with Barry until 2003, winning seven league titles in eight seasons, the Welsh Cup and the League Cup four times each.

After leaving Barry, the defender spent one campaign in the English pyramid with Newport County, before he returned to the top flight of Welsh domestic football with Carmarthen Town, as he helped the Old Gold into Europe with a League Cup triumph Lloyd then returned to finish his career with Llanelli, where he won another league title as Llanelli enjoyed one of their most successful periods in their history

The former defender was previously the Welsh Premier League’s European record appearance holder, and remains the only domestic player to be called up to a full Welsh squad whilst playing in the Welsh pyramid. Gary appeared for the Town club 300 times whilst scoring 57 goals. He had a short stint as Andy Legg's assistant last season. He can now be found pitchside at local club Evans and Williams (Albies) where his son plays!

THE GARY LLOYD CUP

After discussions between Gavin Chesterfield, Bob Jeffries and Neil Dymmock the clubs decided after their misfortunes in recent years to play the Gary Lloyd Cup to cement a special relationship After many years playing at the top to fall down to the bottom of the pits and rise once again!

Tonight we welcome you all to celebrate not only this but 100 years at Stebonheath Park!

OUR

BARRY TOWN UNITED

Barry Town is a semi professional team that was founded in 1912 and are based at Jenner Park which has saw many European days after qualifying via winning the Cymru Premier and the Welsh Cup

Barry has produced over 50 internationals and is now fan run! Jenner Park has just had a new surface and boasts of being able to hold 3,500 spectators!

In 1949/50 Jenner Park became one of the first grounds in the country to install floodlights with the likes of Newport County, Swansea City and Cardiff City all visiting to showcase the facilities.

The creation of the League Of Wales in 1992 then promoted a deceee that Barry would no longer be allowed to play in the English pyramid whilst based on welsh soil With the team forced into exile they adopted the name of Barri AFC and played their matches at Worcester City's ground. However this didn't last long as then chairman O'Halloran made an unexpected U turn that saw Barry Town return home and eventually accepted back for the 1993/94 campaign

Barry's return to Jenner Park sparked the sides most successful period as they earned immediate promotion to the top flight and a unique quadruple of the Welsh League, Welsh League Cup, FAW Trophy and the Welsh Cup The latter one being one of their most famous achievements upsetting Football League Second Division Cardiff City at the Old National Stadium in front of 16,000 spectators!

They soon after became the first fully professional club and many years of success followed. They became the first League of Wales team to win a Champions League tie defeating FC Shamkir which led them to play FC Porto losing 8 0 away in front of 55,000 fans! Barrys most famous result was the return leg where they won 3 1 at home against a squad that included Ricardo Carvalho, Helder Postiga and many other top players

The golden era didn't last forever as the continual challenge of competing to get the top prize money was tough to sustain such high standards set previously and with the chairperson pulling out ex footballer John Fashanu joined the club to steer it to safety promising many TV deals that did not happen Soon Fashanu left the club after finding more fame after participating on Im a Celebrity, Get me out of here" they went into administration in 2003 with the squad quickly disintegrating

OUR OPPONENTS

THE FIGHT BACK

After the fully professional bubble burst fans set about to raise money to keep the club alive Eventually Stuart Lovering then came in to takeover the club in December 2003

In 2003/04 a difficult season hit them as they were relegated to Welsh League Division One which saw manager Colin Addison leave the club and his assistant David Hughes replace him but not for long as his budget got slashed! In the meantime a district valuer determined that the club should pay £42,000 in rent and rates each season for the remainder of the lease. Lovering refused to pay this and then moved the club to play in Treforest from January 2005 to May 2006 During this absence many fans created a breakaway club called Barry FC sparking major disputes with the current chairman who then banned them from fundraising at the club.

While chaos reigned off the field for much of the decade the roots of recovery began to grow in 2007 with the appointment of Gavin Chesterfield He soon led them to promotion with the hope that a winning run of form would see the clubs dwindling support return After a tough start Barry Town went on a 21 match unbeaten streak and finished third! However in 2008 a crisis meeting was held with the supporters creating a company to be able to be able to operate the first team so Lovering could focus on finding a buyer.

In 2010 we saw the Stand Up For Barry campaign launched using all social media platforms to hit a wider online audience. Shortly after in 2011 Lovering tried to withdraw the club from playing in the higher league competition so the Barry Town Supporters Committee stepped in to prevent this and and took control of football and their funding know to their fans as the "DIY Era"

In 2013, Lovering decided to withdraw the senior team from the Welsh League and after a meeting with the FAW Council they decided the club would have to play recreational football This was soon seen by a High Court judge stating the FAW Council acted unlawfully and the club was soon re entered into the structure The club soon revived under Chesterfield as they won the Welsh Football League returning to the Welsh Premier Barry then went on to qualify for the UEFA preliminary rounds a remarkable turnaround for all involved After the pandemic the clubs form dropped which saw them drop to the Cymru South.

CATCH UP WITH LEE JOHN

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR CUP WIN LAST WEEKEND. HOW DID THE GAME GO?

Very tough as expected, Canton managed the game brilliantly, they got the early goal and credit to them they were difficult to break down and dangerous from set pieces and on the counter attack In saying that, we did create a few chances but we didn't work their keeper anywhere near enough over 90 minutes Then it's a lottery with penalties as we know, Thankfully we were able to scrape through.

A TOUGH AWAY DAY TO CEFN DRUIDS AT THE ROCK, HAPPY WITH THE DRAW?

Obviously we would have liked a home draw but this is a great chance to test ourselves against a team who have just got relegated from the Cymru Premier and a nice opportunity for the players to enjoy a North Wales trip together, I've done a few in my time but I can't remember the trip home on most of them haha!

11 MATCHES UNBEATEN AN INCREDIBLE RUN AND NOMINATIONS FOR TWO PLAYERS AND A MANAGER OF THE MONTH. WHATS KEY TO KEEP THIS GOING?

Keeping a full squad fit and available Against Canton we had five players unavailable who have started regularly this season That's near half of the team. To compete in all competitions we need everyone available on a constant basis. That's why teams like Barry will be right up there come end of the season. Ambitious players who want to achieve have to be professional, driven and look after themselves.

TOUGH OPPONENTS IN BARRY TOWN THIS WEEKEND, WILL IT BE A BLOCKBUSTER MATCH OR WILL BOTH CLUBS RATHER THE WIN NEXT WEEK?

Its A big game 1/4 final of the cup. I'm not thinking of the league game next week and neither should our players We've got a job to do on Friday we will definitely start as the under dogs but let's give it our best shot with no excuses! I'd love to win a trophy with this group of players and supporters HAVING REESO AND BLAINY BY YOUR SIDE HOW DO THE THREE OF YOU COMPLIMENT EACHOTHER?

Dylan has been with me for six seasons now he's brilliant, methodical, detailed and calm in his approach Reeso has got the old school mentality he gets the lads respecting eachother and working hard He brings the best out of the team collectively and I oversee it all making the key decisions with their support and feedback It's a nice balance and works well Long may it continue!

CAPTAINS CORNER

Good Evening Reds!

Another cup game, another win…just! Credit has to be given to Canton Liberal who put up a good fight We knew it wasn’t going to be an easy game at all, knowing that they had beaten Penybont during pre season and it certainly wasn’t easy!

We started poorly conceding early however were very dominant following their goal and had enough chances to win the game without the need for penalties. I have to say, it was nice to win a game on penalties this time around!

We know that the performance wasn’t up to our recent high standard however the most important part was to ensure that we progressed to the next round and now look forward to an away day at Cefn Druids and hope that some of you can also come along to support us

We have now turned our focus onto our next opponents and know that Barry Town will be another difficult opponent having only recently been relegated. We had a good training session in the week and all know that we are in for a battle but the lads are buzzing for it.

Thanks again for your support and hopefully with your support, we will progress to the next round!

CATCH UP WITH TIM PARKER

A GOOD START TO THE SEASON, HOW HAS THE PLAYING STYLE INTRODUCED BY THE MANAGER HELPED YOU BE PROLIFIC IN THIS SIDE?

I think at the moment we are just being hard to beat A lot of us have played with eachother at Goytre so we know our strengths The leagues so tough so I think we got to be adaptable to how we play otherwise we will get caught out I think also the boys know what Johno expects now and anything less, we will know about it!

WHATS DIFFERENT AT LLANELLI AND UNDER JOHNO NOW COMPARED TO PREVIOUS TIMES?

I don't think too much has changed Johno and Dylan had built a really good team at Goytre that was hard to beat with a good squad and that's starting to be shown here From playing in both sides it's clear to see how tight the squad is and I think that's massive when you want to do well.

SIX GOALS ALREADY THIS SEASON, DO YOU HAVE AN EYE ON A TALLY YOU WANT TO REACH?

As a striker it's what you get measured on so the more the better. It's an easy drive home when you scored a goal but as long as we keep winning that's the main thing. It would be great to hit the 20 mark!

AN AWAY TRIP TO CEFN DRUIDS IN THE CUP, DO YOU FANCY A GOOD CUP RUN?

Would love a cup run and think we got a good enough team to do so. It's nice to play a different team and it's a nice ground up there so should be a good away day! From the last round you can see anyone can beat anyone so we fancy ourselves to give it a go!

GOOD LUCK GAVIN

CHESTERFIELD APPOINTED AS CARDIFF CITY ACADEMY MANAGER

Gavin has significant experience in both the domestic and international game, He previously worked in Player Development with the FAW as part of Osian Roberts coaching staff for 4 years as well as 15 years and over 500 matches at Barry Town United

He was also Course Director at USW MSc Advanced Performance Football Coaching Degree and as FAW Coach Educator Training Manager specialising in coach development at the highest level He is a UEFA Pro License holder and will officially start his role on November 14th, leaving Barry Town United

"This feels like the perfect opportunity for me, as I know a lot of people at the club having worked with and supported the education of several coaches including those currently supporting the First Team, Academy, Women's sides and foundation"

“For me, it is about providing the best life experiences and learning opportunities that we can. All of those things come into the mix when developing players from a holistic perspective and I think you can say the same thing too when it comes to staff “development. When you have player development and staff development coming together then it makes for a positive culture and an exciting place to work and that is what I’m hoping to bring to the table

“There is nothing quite like watching a player come through and make their debut It’s a very difficult feeling to replicate and I can’t wait to get started and help shape the future generation of Cardiff City players ”

FAREWELL GAV!

From everyone at Llanelli Town AFC we wish you all the best at Cardiff and thank you for everything you have done for the domestic game here in Wales.

Gavin had a short spell for Llanelli back in 2001 making his debut versus TNS He played 7 games and scored 1 goal

STALLION BOXING ANGELO DRAGONE

I’ve been training the academy teams for the last couple of months now. Boxing training is one of the hardest and we just want to take them out of their comfort zones. Get them a bit more physical and add to their already good fitness levels Teach them discipline and respect for their coaches

We want to get them out of their shells and encourage them to become more vocal transferring these skills onto a football pitch so they can work better as a team Some great results recently so hope my sessions have helped with this and look forward to continuing our partnership together.

CONTINUED PARTNERSHIPS

Here is Chairman Wayne Stephens showing off our new Joma team wear with the continued partnership with Coleg Sir Gar and Llanelli Town AFC Supporters Club. We also thank local business RCS for sorting our kit for this season

OUR ACADEMY

ACADEMY

Firstly I’d like to thank all of our parents, players, coaches and management team for all their support and help in supporting and running the academy for this area for the last 3 years.

As an academy we are pleased with the start of the year after the decision FAW made in regards to 1 Player 1 Club which put all clubs under pressure and gave parents and players tough decisions to make We are extremely grateful to all for choosing to join the Llanelli Town AFC academy in July 2022

As an academy we are working tirelessly to provide the best available facilities and environments for all teams. I just want to thank all of our partners for all of their support:

Coleg Sir Gar Coastland

Llanelli Supporters Club LRA Logistics

Stebonheath Sports Bar

Without these partners support we would struggle to operate as an academy. The academy carries on growing for the future to benefit all members from 8 19 years of age

We would like to work with all partners in our area moving forward to give the best opportunity to all players, coaches and parents The opportunity to enjoy a fantastic FAW licensed academy program to everyone

Thanks

OUR LADIES

Llanelli Town AFC Ladies Team have started the season continuing their fine form from the end of the 21/22 season. The Ladies have gone unbeaten in the first five games of the SWWGL, and progressed through the first two rounds of the 22/23 FAW Women’s Cup, scoring 29 goals and conceding just two

The start of the 21/22 season didn’t go as planned, however despite a poor start, The Reds Ladies worked to then go on an unbeaten run of ten games Unfortunately, due to the results at the beginning of the season, this string of wins was not enough to gain promotion However, The Ladies continued to work endlessly, began to come together as a team both on and off the field, and improved technically, refining their confidence and consistency. This has shown dramatic improvements regarding the 22/23 season. To put into perspective how much The Ladies team has grown over the last 12 months, this time last year, the team lost 3 2 to both Newport City FC Women and Caerphilly Castle Ladies FC Flipping to the current season, we have already beaten Newport City 6 1, and Caerphilly Ladies 3 0 The effort and commitment to improving as a team evident through these contrasting results

The Ladies are displaying great confidence and ability throughout competitive matches, with knowledge and understanding that continuing this work ethic will bring positive results, and enable us to achieve the ultimate goal… promotion!

Moving Forward

The Ladies have drawn Britton Ferry in the next round of the FAW Women’s Cup at their ground in Neath on October 30th This will be a great opportunity to showcase how much we have grown over the last year, and the girls are full of confidence, knowing this is a team we are capable of beating. We will continue to work hard and commit to growing our ability within the game as individual players, and as a well rounded team. The next League game is on 23rd October where we face Splott Albion at home.

OUR VETERANS

OVER 40S

Our 40s looked to build on their opening day victory as they entertained newcomers Hopkinstown at Penrhos Llanelli went into an early lead on 12 minutes when Steve Davies chipped the ball over the oncoming keeper from outside the box Dai Hughes then doubled the lead on 16 minutes with a powerful header leaving the keeper no chance. The reds were then enforced into a couple of changes due to injury and the half finished 2 0 as Llanelli lost their early fluidity They soon found their rhythm in the second 45 and ran riot scoring a further 6 goals with 3 from goal machine Kevin Bartley, a brace from Steve Blackford and a cheeky back heel from Jamie Bowen to run out comfortable winners against our gallant visitors, who to their credit didn’t stop battling in front of an excellent visiting support

OVER 50S

Our 50s entertained last season champions Merthyr & credit to the Reds give a good account of themselves .at the interval the visitors were one goal to the good by a nick Francis strike. The second half the Reds found it difficult to create any openings more to the credit of a well organised Merthyr team reds stayed in the game untill the last 10mins before there resistance broke & Merthyr added a further 2 goals. Reds manager John taylor was full of praise after the match saying when you consider we had 4 influential players out after picking up injuries in the 1st game and still give Merthyr a stern test the lads can hold there heads up & we look forward to our next game where we entertain cwmbran in 2wks time

A SPECIAL THANK YOU

FIRST CHOICE FLOORING

A massive thanks to Jason and Joanne Davies who have supported the club since last season as sponsors. After seeing the success throughout the club they were there to support us even more and came up with the initiative to pay for and donate 100 tickets for families in Llanelli to come and celebrate this momental occasion at Stebonheath Park this weekend. Financial support is vital but going out of your way to support your local club in any ways you can will really push them on and you'll do wonderful things so please if you are able to do so get out there and help the community!

MESSAGE FROM THIS PROGRAMMES EDITOR

I hope you all enjoy the match tonight. It's great to see two massive clubs battle it out once again in front of hopefully a big crowd Thanks to all the sponsors, players, parents, volunteers, coaches, committee, directors and sponsors etc that make this club so special.

With the initiative to invite local families this week our social media hasn't stopped, we welcome you all and hope you enjoy as soon as you step through them gates and continue to support us beyond this weekend.

Thanks all. Safe travels home.
