LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN Good Evening! The Arizona Sports and Entertainment Commission (ASEC) is pleased to welcome you to the Crest Insurance Group 49th Annual Arizona Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. We are thrilled to join you in celebrating tonight’s six outstanding honorees, each of whom has helped to shape the past, present and future of Arizona sports. As a non-profit organization and steward of the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame, the ASEC is responsible for driving economic impact in our state through athletics. Occasions such as this evening’s program provide financial support and other critical resources that allow the ASEC to generate both business and participatory opportunities for our communities. Of course, we cannot do this alone. The ASEC partners with more than 100 entities to showcase a variety of signature events throughout the year, including the Fiesta Bowl Lori Piestewa National Native American Games; the GCSG Pickleball Championship; the Visit Tucson Fall Festival Pickleball Championship presented by Flores Concepts; Pepsi and Westward Look Resort; and the Grand Canyon State Games. A sincere thank you is extended to Cody and Patsy Ritchie, the Crest Insurance Group, Kenneth Manuel, The Gila River Hotels and Casinos and all of our amazing sponsors for their generous support of the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Without the dedication and passion of our Arizona Sports Hall of Fame Trustees, led by Co-Chairmen Dan Lewis and Micah Kinsler, our Executive Director, Nikki Balich, and the entire ASEC staff, tonight’s ceremony would not be possible. Most importantly, we thank you for your support as we celebrate the accomplishments of Arizona sports icons: the late Dick Tomey, Amy Van Dyken-Rouen, Derrick Hall, Michael Carbajal, Tom Chambers and Michael Nesbitt. We hope you enjoy this memorable experience!

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR started playing racquetball in 1983 at the age of 30 in Gresham, Oregon in a pay-by-the-hour public facility. (I wish I’d have known about racquetball as a kid!) I quickly got hooked on the sport and joined a gym and very soon joined the racquetball league. I was, of course, the only girl in the league! And I won that first league I ever played! It was Men’s C’s! I continued to play racquetball, but took a few years off to have children. In 1989 I began playing in leagues again and also playing in local tournaments in Renton, Washington. (I had moved to Washington in 1987.) In 1990 I became involved in running local tournaments and leagues at my club. I have been running tournaments ever since. So I have been running racquetball tournaments for 29 years! In 1990, I started playing tournaments throughout the state, not just locally. And I began playing National tournaments as well. I became a WRA (Washington Racquetball Association) board member. Over about 15 years I held all 4 board member positions – President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. The WRA board ran a variety of tournaments every year and I was an integral part of running those tournaments. During my active pursuits of playing every local and state level tournament each year, I also played tournaments in several states across the nation. I was first sponsored by E-Force, and then Head, and for over a decade I was sponsored by Ektelon, and I still play with Ektelon gear today. I ran a lot of Ektelon sponsored clinics as well as gave racquetball lessons over about a 15 year period. I also became a certified ref during this time. One of the most fun events I ran was my “Prattski Doubles Shootout” One day tournaments. I ran them for several years. (Prattski was my nickname and everyone in the racquetball community knew me as Prattski!) I have won medals/trophies at all levels of play both in leagues and tournaments. Here are some of my 1st place wins at the state and regional levels:

WA State Singles: 1996 Women’s A singles – 1st 2004 Women’s A singles – 1st WA State Doubles: 1992 Mixed BC – 1st 1995 Mixed Open – 1st 1998 Women’s Doubles – 1st 2002 Women’s A Doubles – 1st and Mixed A - 1st 2005 Mixed Elite – 1st 2006 Mixed Elite – 1st and Women’s Open/Elite – 1st Regionals: 1994 Women’s B singles – 1st 1996 Women’s A singles – 1st and Women’s 40+ - 1st 2004 Women’s A singles – 1st and Women’s 50A – 1st

I started playing National Tournaments in 1995. And my greatest accomplishments are in National singles and doubles. In 2004 I won a Gold Medal in Women’s 50+ A singles. And in 2003 I won a Gold Medal in Women’s A Doubles. My goal to win a Gold Medal in Mixed Doubles has eluded me, having won 2nd place several times. But it is still a goal of mine! I moved to Arizona in January of 2008 and was immediately asked to run the Grand Canyon State Games Racquetball Tournaments by Karen Key, who was the previous Commissioner. So I started running these tournaments in June, 2008. In January, 2012 GCSG added the Winter Games Racquetball Tournaments. So now I run two tournaments each year.

ARIZONA SPORTS HALL OF FAME The Arizona Sports Hall of Fame was founded in 1957 by the Phoenix Press Box Association. Before ceasing operations in 1991, the Association held 36 induction ceremonies. In 1991, the Phoenix Regional Sports Commission (PRSC) assumed oversight of the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame, with the goal to find the Hall of Fame a permanent home. In December 1999, the PRSC partnered with the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce to launch an Arizona Sports Awards luncheon at the Civic Center. The Hall of Fame was a key piece to that event. In January 2001, another luncheon event was held, and in 2002 two key Arizona sports figures, Jerry Colangelo and Curly Culp, were inducted. Then due to a variety of economic factors, the Hall of Fame went dormant from 2002 to 2009. In early 2008, the PRSC began planning for a relaunch of the Hall of Fame. On April 16, 2009, the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame was revitalized with an induction ceremony at the Phoenician. Over 300 people were on hand to honor four inductees, including Al McCoy, Darren Woodson, Linda Vollstedt and Bob Horner. Since then, the event has continued to grow every year and today, the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is one of the largest annual fundraisers of the Arizona Sports & Entertainment Commission, formerly PRSC. Funds raised at the event support the ASEC’s mission to “Enrich Our Community Through Sports.” To date, there are 114 members in the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame. Tonight, we are pleased to add six more!

MICHAEL CARBAJAL Who do you admire and why? Roberto Duran – his boxing name is Manos de Piedra (Hands of Stone). My boxing name is MICHAEL “Manitas de Piedra” CARBAJAL (Little Hands of Stone). I got my nickname from my idol, fellow Hall of Famer and friend Roberto Duran. February 24, 1989, I made my Pro Debut at Trump Plaza in Atlantic City on the undercard of Roberto Duran. He was older than me, I looked up to him. He had tremendous work ethic, as I did, grew up in poverty stricken barrio as did I, however, wee rose above it all without the frills and fancy equipment-just hard core work ethic, had an incredible desire, determination, dedication and discipline to be the best in the World-his strive and persistence was unwavering like mine, taking us both to the very top elite of the Boxing World Globally. Ironically, although he was much older than me, I was inducted into the Prestigious International Boxing Hall of Fame before he was!!

2019 AZ SPORTS HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE Where did you get your start in sports? I was introduced to the sport of boxing at the ripe age of five on the front porch of my childhood home, by my late father Manuel, an accomplished boxer himself, a Golden Gloves Champion. My late father did not let me start competing until I was 13 years old.

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment? When I won my first of six World Titles July 29, 1990, Knocking out Mungchai Kittikasem and becoming the International Boxing Federation Light Flyweight Champion of the World.

What is your favorite food? Vietnamese.

Name six people living or dead that you would love to have dinner with? I have had dinner previously with the late Governor Rose Mofford, the late Senator John McCain, the late Congressman Ed Pastor, the late Governor Barry Goldwater and would like to sit down at dinner with them again today, and also with former Senator Jeff Flake and former President Barak Obama.

If you could know the absolute and total truth to one question, what question would you ask? The true cause of death of the Legendary Bruce Lee.

What do you want people to remember you most by? I want people to remember that as I rose into Global Fame, I always remained humble, true to my roots, I remembered where I came from, the heart of the Phoenix.

What is your favorite book? Dianetics –The Modern Science of Mental Health by L. Ron Hubbard. (I am not a member of the Church of Scientology).

What is your favorite movie? The CHAMP starring Jon Voight and Ricky Schroder.

What is the most memorable moment of your life? There are two equal most memorable events of my life. 1) On July 31, 1999, when I retired in dramatic fashion after I stripped Jorce Arce, the 21 year old reigning WBO World Champion of his belt, knocking him out in the 11th round, in a bloody war, becoming the new WBO Light Flyweight World Champion in a bull ring in Tijuana – retiring a World Champion – something I promised my late father, I would BECOME a World Champion and retire a World Champion. 2) On June 7, 2006, I was inducted into the prestigious International Boxing Hall of Fame, alongside the greatest of all times…..one of Boxing’s Highest honors.

Q&A

DICK TOMEY June 20, 1938 – May 10, 2019 Interview with Dick Tomey, via his wife, Nanci Kincaid Who do you admire and why? Dick admired many people, among them: Bo Schembechler, John Wooden, Steve Kerr, single mothers who raise amazing kids, Great teachers, Learners of all descriptions, inspired and inspiring leaders, those who are resilient and overcome obstacles, the generous spirited, the fair minded, the hard working, the kind hearted and the empathetic.

2019 AZ SPORTS HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE Where did you get your start in sports? Dick’s childhood nickname was Tubby and he wore thick glasses. When he once complained to his mother that kids were calling him “fatso and four eyes,” she said, “That means they like you.” Always the optimist, he believed her. And it became true. Dick loved sports when he was a boy, organized neighborhood tournaments and gave away his mother’s good china as prizes – not good. Most of his childhood stories revolve around baseball, basketball and football – some of it organized, but most of it free-form and spontaneous, just kids playing in an empty lot until it was too dark to see. He credits his junior high basketball coach with changing his life by kicking him off the team-forcing him to re-create himself for the next season, which he did. Once he learned the transformative power of sports he was inspired and started down the path to becoming a coach.

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment? Dick was most proud of his large blended family: his wife, Nanci, his children Rich and Rachelle Tomey, Angie and John Tecklin, Ali and Eric Bergthold, Leigh and Mayur Chaudhari-and his eight glorious grandchildren: Noah Tecklin 15, Caid Bergthold 14, Taylor Tomey 13, Coby Bergthold 12, Ryan Tomey 12, Charley Bergthold 11, Chase Tomey 9 and Jude Tecklin 8.

What is your favorite food?

A healthy eater, Dick was legendary for his diet of salmon, broccoli and blueberries. But he also loved mac and cheese; pizza, peanut butter, apple pie and Cherry Garcia frozen yogurt. Lots of it!

Name six people living or dead that you would love to have dinner with? His mother, Lucille, who died when he was 17. Nelson Mandela, Babe Ruth, any friend or family member, any of the guys who played for him or coached with him, any of the people he ever-worked with – he learned from everyone.

What do you want people to remember you most by? Dick was a learner who contributed all that he could. That he was forever a work in progress.

What is your favorite book? Dick was a big reader including inspirational/motivational books and biographies. He recently wrote a book, ‘The Rise of the Rainbow Warriors.’ His most recent favorite maybe.

What is your favorite movie? Field of Dreams, at one time. Dick loved movies – was a huge movie goer. Loved anything remotely history based. He even loved ‘chick flicks,’ was interested in movies about the lives of women. But Broadway musicals were his real love. Le Mes was his favorite. He saw it eleven times and could not be stopped from singing along out loud in the theatre to the dismay of people around him. He also was a huge fan of Chicago, Cats, Jersey Boys, Hamilton, and many others.

What is the most memorable moment of your life? Dick had a way of MAKING moments memorable – including one (my personal favorite.) At Boston Art Museum when lightning struck in the portrait gallery. Many people who knew him can recall a shared moment. Since his death people have reached out to share stories, both poignant and funny, quotes, phone calls, and personal memories which have been great comfort to his family.
