VICE-CHANCELLOR`S STEM PROJECT BACKGROUND State of Mathematics and Science in SA/WC, enrollment of students in Mathematics (28%) and Physical Sciences (19%) Western Cape. Average of 40% and 43% of enrolled learners attained a pass at 50%, 5% of learners registered in Gr 1 achieve 50% pass in Gr12 Of participating schools and 8.4% (Physical Science) and 28% (Mathematics). From Gr10 to Gr12: 4.5% (PS) and 18% (Math), fact finding in 2018 with support of MCD.


CURRENT STATUS The following are in place; (relevant units have been informed and have agreed to assist) Access of learners onto campus (Protection Services), Permission for running project under COVID. (COVID-19 Health Cluster), Lecture venues, Fundani training is in place for February 2022 as well as educators and tutors.

THE FOLLOWING TO BE FINALISED: Indemnities (MCD / H&S), Transport – D6 to Bellville campus (Protection & Risk Services) and the Learners - Registration (CPPD department / CTS).

PROJECT FORMAT: Support will be offered on Saturdays from 9:00am to 12:00, Learners need support ranging from class to tutorial sessions of Mathematics, Life Science and Physical Science. Sessions are planned to allow for compliance of the COVID protocol under lockdown Level. Online support will still be offered via use of TEAMS and WhatsApp.

In addition: Access of learners to students (derived benefits: university access, processes, careers guidance, etc.), Access to lecturers/postgraduates (like above), Access to Laboratory (Technical and Computer), Engagement in Mathematics and Science projects, Advancement of Mathematics and Science and Runs parallel to School support program, NGO.

FUTURE: Enrolments – target schools and sustainability as well as CPUT niche? Proposal to investigate impact – being drafted with Fundani
