
Postdoctoral Research Fellowship: Metabolomics

About the project and team
An exciting opportunity is available for a postdoctoral researcher to join our research team
The project is mainly aimed at employing a metabolomics approach to better understand and characterise the effect of the proudly South African herbal tea, Rooibos on diseases and/or situations where oxidative stress play an important role, with focus on, but not limited to cardiometabolic diseases.
The successful applicant will be based at AMHBI, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Bellville campus, South Africa. AMHBI hosts researchers with diverse backgrounds and research projects within the realm of Health and Microbial Biotechnology. The successful applicant will be working with Prof JL Marnewick and play a key role in the analysis and interpretation of metabolomic data collected from recently completed human intervention studies, where Rooibos was employed as a dietary intervention strategy.
Responsibilities:
• Day-to-day management of research projects associated with fellowship
• Development and implementation of project-relevant laboratory experiments
• Co-supervision and support of postgraduate students, under the guidance of the principal supervisor
• Research report writing
• Manuscript writing and publication
Minimum requirements
• PhD degree in a relevant field (e.g., bioinformatics, computational biology, Biochemistry etc.). The PhD should have been awarded within the five years prior to the awarding of the Fellowship as per the CPUT Postdoctoral Fellowship Policy at the time of appointment
• Experience in human metabolomics research, including relevant techniques and equipment
• Experience with large scale data management and analysis
• Experience in utilising relevant programs for data analysis, statistical analyses and visualisation of data, including MS Office suite and MetaboAnalyst
• Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team or independently
• Excellent communication (English) and leadership skills
• Strong publications record
• Willingness to learn new skills and take part in training programs
• Experience with human metabolome analyses
Beneficial
• Familiarity with linking human metabolomics data to biochemistry and physiological data
Please note: This is a fellowship appointment and does not constitute permanent or contract employment at CPUT Fellows are not permitted to hold any other paid full-time employment positions during this fellowship. This postdoctoral fellowship has an annual stipend of R300 000, with the possibility of renewal, subject to performance, funding availability, institutional policy, and the maximum allowable postdoctoral appointment period.
