Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Membranes and Advanced Water Technology Research Department of Chemical Engineering
Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT)
Background
The Department of Chemical Engineering at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Membranes and Advanced Water Technology Research. This position is part of a research project focused on developing a novel triblock terpolymer nanofiltration membrane for the removal of nitrate from drinking water. The research will employ Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer (RAFT) polymerization and Layer-by-Layer (LBL) membrane fabrication techniques to synthesis the novel membrane. The project is an integral part of advancing membrane technology and water treatment solutions, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG6) and South Africa’s National Development Plan.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to:
• Synthesize triblock terpolymers using RAFT polymerization for membrane fabrication.
• Fabricate and optimize nanofiltration membranes using the Layer-by-Layer (LBL) technique.
• Characterize the membranes using SEM, TEM, AFM, XPS, FTIR, XRD, and DLS techniques.
• Evaluate membrane performance in nitrate removal, water flux, and fouling resistance
• Conduct stability studies under various ionic and chlorine conditions.
• Compare the novel membrane with commercial polyamide membranes in terms of performance and costeffectiveness.
• Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present research at national and international conferences.
• Assist in mentoring postgraduate students (Masters and PhD candidates) involved in the project.
• Collaborate with industry partners for technology transfer and potential commercialization.
Minimum Requirements
• A PhD in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science, or a related field
• Proven experience in membrane fabrication, polymer synthesis, and water treatment technologies.
• Strong background in polymer chemistry and nanomaterials
• Experience with membrane characterization techniques such as SEM, TEM, AFM, XPS, FTIR, and XRD.
• A strong track record of peer-reviewed publications in relevant areas.
• Ability to work independently and in a multidisciplinary team.
• Excellent analytical, writing, and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications (Advantageous)
• Experience with RAFT polymerization
• Knowledge of water purification processes and membrane performance evaluation
Duration & Funding
• The position is funded for one year, with the possibility of renewal based on performance.
• The fellowship includes a competitive tax-free stipend of R320,000 and opportunities for overseas travel
Location
Department of Chemical Engineering, Cape Peninsula University of Technical, CPUT Bellville Campus, Symphony Way, Bellville South, Cape Town, South Africa.
