TITLE: PRIMARY SCHOOL EDUCATORS’ MOTIVATION TO TEACH IN MANENBERG, WESTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA
This thesis emerged from a desire to understand the motivation of educators to teach in challenging school contexts on the Cape Flats of South Africa. This qualitative study employed semi-structured interviews to explore the views of educators on their wider school community, including during the Covid-19 pandemic. The findings suggest that the motivation of the educators is positively linked to the relationships educators have with their peers, learners and their families. The study adds to the body of knowledge of educator motivation in marginalised, post-apartheid communities, and to the limited literature on how crises shape the motivation of educators. The study provides a framework for understanding the conditions under which educator motivation may be enhanced to support equitable and quality teaching and learning. FACULTY

TITLE: THE DEVELOPMENT OF A FRAMEWORK FOR PRINCIPAL MENTORING IN ONE EDUCATION DISTRICT IN THE WESTERN CAPE
The research explored the need for a mentoring framework for novice principals as a professional development strategy. The study made use of a qualitative research method set within an interpretive paradigm using a descriptive intrinsic case study. Situated learning was used as a conceptual framework. This conceptual framework was underpinned by the adult learning theory, constructivism theory and social learning theory.
The findings lead to the development of mentoring framework for principals. The unique framework makes a significant contribution to theory and practice as it provides a framework to navigate principals through their early years and improving their management and leadership skills.

TITLE: TEACHING AND LEARNING STRATEGIES TO ENHANCE ISIXHOSASPEAKING LEARNERS’ MATHEMATICAL UNDERSTANDING IN ENGLISH GRADE 1 CLASSROOMS
This study was conceptualised within the context of Foundation Phase mathematics teaching, and aimed to provide strategies to enhance isiXhosa-speaking learners’ understanding of mathematics in the English Grade 1 classroom. IsiXhosa-speaking learners in South Africa are excluded from meaningful mathematics learning opportunities due to a lack of fluency and proper mathematical registers. Using an adapted interactive qualitative analysis methodology, this research aimed to investigate teachers’ understandings and experiences of using teaching and learning strategies to enhance isiXhosa-speaking learners’ understanding of mathematics in English Grade 1 classrooms. This research found several recommendations for mathematical support strategies for isiXhosa-speaking learners in English Grade 1 classrooms and emphasised the significance of using sufficient multi-semiotic strategies that enhance isiXhosa-speaking learners’ ability to grasp and understand mathematical concepts easily. This research therefore contributes to current knowledge in the field of teaching mathematics for understanding in multilingual contexts.

TITLE: TOWARDS A FRAMEWORK FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF AN E-LEARNING POLICY AT AN AFRICAN UNIVERSITY: AN ACTOR-NETWORK THEORY PERSPECTIVE
The aim of the study was to explore the integration of technology for flexible curriculum delivery in higher education institutions in developing contexts with a special focus on Sub-Saharan Africa. The study traced the trajectory of a university in Zimbabwe in its implementation of an e-learning policy, highlighting the roles and actions of various e-learning actors in a university network, that hinder and/or support the integration of technology for flexible curriculum delivery. The study concluded that the successful embedding of innovation in higher education institutions in developing contexts, is not solely dependent on the implementation of a policy, rather the success is based on a trajectory that involves deliberate, purposeful, contextualised, fluid, interconnected strategies and interventions deployed by individual institutions. The study led to the development of an Actor-Network Theory inspired Framework for Technology Integration (AFTI) that can be adopted by institutions in developing contexts as they seek to integrate technology for flexible curriculum delivery. Of note is how the framework can be a useful tool that can ensure the continuity of the teaching and learning process during times of disruptions, such as pandemics, natural disasters, or other disturbances in higher education.

TITLE: DEVELOPING A FRAMEWORK TO FACILITATE PRIMARY TEACHERS’ CHANGE OF PROFESSIONAL DISCOURSE ABOUT INCLUSIVE PEDAGOGICAL APPROACHES
This research explored how twelve teachers, attending full-service schools in the Metro Central Education District of the Western Cape Education Department, changed their professional discourse about inclusive education pedagogical approaches, after attending a five-week intervention programme. The results were analysed using the theories of Engeström’s Activity Theory Framework, Garrison, Archer and Anderson’s Community of Inquiry, and Strampel and Oliver’s levels of cognitive reflections. The five important findings lead to the development of the Facilitating Discourse Framework conceptual framework which explains the complex process of facilitating change in teachers’ professional discourse. This unique framework makes a significant contribution to theory and practices, as it employs an in-depth training approach that equips teachers with a thorough understanding of how to successfully implement IE policies and strategies in their classrooms.

TITLE: TEACHERS’ VIEWS OF CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT RELATED TO SOCIAL COHESION IN THE WESTERN CAPE, SOUTH AFRICA
This thesis explored the views of 30 high school teachers, who worked in diverse schooling contexts and participated in one of three social cohesion-related Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programmes in the Western Cape. This qualitative study used a multiple case study approach, document analysis, and semi-structured interviews. The findings suggest that the quality of social cohesion-related CPD, as perceived by teachers, is shaped by the knowledge and experiences of facilitators, and the appropriateness of CPD programme materials and activities. The study adds to the body of knowledge about the quality of CPD, and how CPD programmes related to social cohesion influence teachers’ awareness of themselves, and enactments within their classrooms. The study contributes to knowledge about how CPD materials may empower teachers for social cohesion for equity in and through education.
DEAN’S MEDAL RECIPIENT
ANNETIA CALITZ
Bachelor of Education in Senior Phase and FET Teaching
Annetia Calitz is a 23-year-old South African, currently living in Noordoewer, Namibia. She matriculated in 2017 at Piketberg High School with four distinctions. She took a gap year and worked as an au-pair in the Netherlands for a year. There she realised her calling, and applied to study Senior Phase and FET at CPUT.
Her four years of studies at CPUT’s Wellington Campus helped Annetia to grow into the person she is today. Her mission was and still is to make a change wherever she goes. Annetia believes that she has achieved this during her time with CPUT, as she was a tutor for two years and a lecturer assistant for her last year of studies. She passed 37 out of 39 subjects with distinction throughout her four years of study.

TITLE: SMALL NON-CODING RNA PROFILES IN CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE IN THE GENERAL POPULATION AND HIGH-RISK SUB-GROUPS (WITH HYPERTENSION AND/OR DIABETES MELLITUS) IN A SOUTH AFRICAN COMMUNITY-BASED COHORT
This study aimed to characterise the expression of whole blood microRNAs in individuals with chronic kidney disease in the general population, and in high-risk individuals with hypertension and diabetes mellitus, for the first time in a South African cohort. The expression profiles of the studied microRNAs were dysregulated in individuals with chronic kidney disease. Novel whole blood microRNAs showed an acceptable discriminative power to predict prevalent chronic kidney disease. The findings of our study form basis for future investigations on the clinical value of microRNAs in chronic kidney disease as potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers, as well as therapeutic targets.

TITLE: AN IN-VITRO EVALUATION OF THE WOUND HEALING PROPERTIES OF COTYLEDON ORBICULATA EXTRACTS AND ITS SILVER NANOPARTICLES
The devastating effects of chronic wounds necessitate that alternative treatments be investigated. Phyto-nanotechnology is an emerging strategy to synthesise nanomaterials for biomedical application. This study investigated the wound healing properties of Cotyledon orbiculata (also known as pig’s ear) extracts and its derived silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The activities of the extract and AgNPs were determined using in-vitro cellular and molecular assays. The study concluded that the extract and AgNPs have good wound healing activities which they exert through increased cell proliferation, differentiation and adhesion. The study is the first to investigate the wound healing effects of AgNPs derived from C. orbiculata
