Once you graduate, you will be qualified to work on boats, ships, oil rigs, and any other marine vessels or structures. You will also have the option to pursue land-based opportunities.

WHAT YOU NEED Minimum Admission Requirements Mainstream: National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) with: • English (5) *First or Second, or First Additional Language • Mathematics (5); Technical Maths (6) • Physical Sciences (5); Technical Science (6) National Certificate • English, N4 (60%); Mathematics, N4 (60%); Electrical Systems, N4 (60%) National Certificate Vocational (NCV4) • English (6), Mathematics (6), Physical Sciences (5)

Subject to the space availability, consideration will be given for admitting students to the Extended Curriculum Programme (ECP) with: • English (4); • Mathematics (4); Technical Maths (5) • Physical Sciences (4); Technical Science (5) National Certificate • English, N4 (60%); Mathematics, N4 (60%); Electrical Systems, N4 (60%) National Certificate Vocational (NCV4) • English (5), Mathematics (5), Physical Sciences (4)

The department utilises an Admission Point Score (APS) as selection criteria once your minimum admission requirements are satisfied. You have to score a minimum of 30 on the APS for the mainstream programme; or 36 for the ECP; or 31–35 for possible waitlist.

Additional Admission Requirements • 21 years or younger at the time of registration for those who pursue this qualification to become seafarers • South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) eyesight test and medical examination for those who pursue this qualification to become seafarers

Your on-the-job training For those pursuing a seafaring career, you have the option of completing your third year theory modules through distance learning while gaining on-board ship experience as required by SAMSA.
