30 October 2023 Dear Students This letter pertains to all registered students in the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences. The final study week for Academic Year 2023 (AY2023) has started, signifying the end of formal tuition for 2023 and the imminent start of the final assessment period. This study week is essentially a time to gather your thoughts, finalise your assessment strategy in terms of how you will manage yourself, your time, and how you will pace yourself according to the assessment schedule that you would have received by now. This final summative assessment forms part of the continuous assessment approach followed by CPUT, where all summative assessments have an assessment weighting that contributes to the final assessment mark. All students are reminded to check assessment marks to date, i.e., that all marks have been entered correctly and that there are no errors on mark sheets. It is your responsibility as student, to ensure that your marks are correct for each subject for which you are registered. No mark amendments for completed assessments will be made after the final marks publication. Assessments can be stressful, especially if one is not fully prepared and has not worked consistently throughout the year. However, this November assessment is one last attempt that students have to work hard at achieving an excellent mark to pass subjects, and/or to work towards passing subjects and the qualification with the esteemed Cum Laude pass. The emphasis should never be to work towards achieving a 50% pass mark – the ability to engage with subject content, to problem-solve, to think critically, matters greatly in preparation for the world of work and life-long learning. Education is expensive regarding finances, time and resources. It is ultimately the time and effort that you invested in AY2023 that matters. You have learnt about 21stC skills and graduate attributes, i.e., values and skills that graduates require for employment possibilities. Consider how these values and attributes will support you to develop emotional and intellectual intelligence for life and for future work prospects. At this time, physical health and mental well-being are important. As part of your assessment strategy, allocate time to reading and studying, exercise, recreation and at least 7-8 hours of restful sleep. The temptation is always to ‘cram’ the night before an assessment and reduce sleep hours, but this should best be avoided. Eat healthily, walk/ run/exercise, and work towards minimising stresses that could be avoided. As is customary in the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences, academic departments made every effort to support students in AY2023, and will continue to do so. We wish you well for this assessment period and look forward to good results from all students. Once this assessment period has ended, enjoy a pleasant holiday. Be safe, stay well and have a restful festive season.
