Advertisement Chief Executive Officer (Five Year Contract Position) The Board of the Cape Higher Education Consortium (CHEC) invites applications for the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This is a half time position, allowing the incumbent to pursue other interests such as teaching, research or consultancy. CHEC is a not-for-profit company which facilitates collaborative projects on behalf of its member universities – the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University and University of the Western Cape. CHEC’s strategic vision is to support the development of the Western Cape as a strong higher education region through collaboration and partnerships that are responsive to the developmental needs and sensitivities of the region. Reporting to the Chairperson of the CHEC Board, the CEO is responsible for the oversight of a range of projects between the member universities as well as facilitating the relationship between the universities and key external partners in the region, including the Western Cape Government, City of Cape Town, the regional business community, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training Colleges. The ideal candidate will be an inspirational, persuasive and tactful leader who can blend diplomacy with assertiveness in driving projects to fruition.

Job Requirements (Minimum Qualifications, work experience and competencies): • • • • • • • •

A doctoral degree. Thorough knowledge of the policy and regulatory framework relating to the South African post school education and training sector and, in particular, universities. A track record of serving in senior management positions in higher education. Demonstrable experience of managing complex and innovative projects in the higher education sector. Strong presentation skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Good planning and project management ability. Demonstrable experience of financial planning and management in higher education.

Provide strategic leadership to CHEC, including the identification and implementation of new projects consistent with CHEC’s vision. Oversee the work of the CHEC Secretariat and Publishing Liaison Office. Promote the continuing development of regional partnerships with the public and private sectors, the regional office of the DHET, and the other components of the regional postsecondary system. The CEO who will be located in the Western Cape will facilitate the work of the various committees that promote the partnership between CHEC, the Western Cape Government and the City of Cape Town. Oversee and facilitate the development and implementation of relevant capacity development programmes for the four universities, in the areas of higher education leadership and management, teaching and learning, and other relevant areas. Ensure the provision of effective human resource and financial management services to support CHEC’s operations. Ensure that CHEC complies with regulatory reporting requirements in terms of its status as a registered not-for-profit company. Serve as chief accounting officer, with final responsibility for meeting external audit requirements.
