A new era for the PSA

‘Protection in Numbers’ will be the focus of the PSA in 2016 and beyond following the launch of a new logo, tagline and member campaign at a special worksite representatives launch held at the Adelaide Festival Centre in March.

Guest Speaker Amanda Tattersall spoke on the need to build coalitions to campaign effectively.

Amanda Tattersall – former Assistant Secretary of Unions NSW, author of Power in Coalition and founding director of GetUp! – spoke at the launch, highlighting her extensive experience campaigning for the union movement and demonstrating how a union and united members can truly bring about change. The ‘Protection in Numbers’ campaign has been driven by member feedback about the benefits of being part of the PSA and seeks to build on the organisation’s positive engagement with both current and future members. “Protection comes from knowing you will have others by your side when you need it most and that you are not alone. Real strength comes when we are standing firmly together. This new branding captures this concept and builds on the organisation’s solid foundations while looking to a positive future,” PSA General Secretary Nev Kitchin said. As part of the ‘Protection in Numbers’ launch, a new poster has been developed featuring the real faces of PSA – our members. “Members recognise that ‘Protection in Numbers’ enables us to achieve the best possible results, whether it’s through individual member issues, enterprise bargaining or government policy matters,” Mr Kitchin said. “The new posters, which will be appearing around worksites shortly, serve as a reminder that we are only as strong as our members and advocating for positive outcomes for them is

central to everything we do.” Building on its new branding, the PSA will also launch a campaign for the next round of Wages Parity Enterprise Bargaining in coming months. Mr Kitchin said it was an exciting time for members to become more involved in their union. “2016 brings with it a raft of challenges - a double-dissolution election brought on by the failed passage of industrial relations reforms,

the next round of Wages Parity Enterprise Bargaining and increasing workload pressures in a number of areas,” Mr Kitchin said. “Central to our capacity to deal with these issues will be the involvement of our all of members and our team of worksite representatives.” To find out how you can be more active in your union, contact the PSA via email at enquiries@cpsu.asn.au.

Minister must intervene as Families SA staff reach breaking point The PSA has called on the Minister for Education and Child Development to urgently intervene in the Families SA staffing and resourcing crisis to prevent South Australia’s next child protection tragedy. The call follows over six months of protracted negotiations with the Department over its failure to appropriately fill the near-200 fulltime vacancies in Families SA and address its employees’ ongoing concerns relating to increasing workloads and inadequate resourcing and infrastructure. PSA members recommenced industrial action at the end of April seeking immediate staffing support, the conversion of temporary staff to ongoing, the cessation of replacing social workers with non-social work staff on the Child Abuse Report Line and a firm commitment to fill the 200 vacancies within the Department. As part of the industrial action, members are refusing to undertake non-essential administrative tasks, refusing to undertake overtime except where the care of a child is

concerned, refusing to participate in training until their workload issues are addressed, and distributing information on the reasons they are taking this action. At no time are children knowingly put at risk as a result of this action. PSA General Secretary Nev Kitchin said that members have no choice but to call on the Minister to intervene after a series of fruitless meetings and discussions with the Department. “Our members do not take this action lightly, but they are at their wits end after the Department’s ongoing failure to meaningfully address these serious staffing and resourcing concerns. The Department and the State Government can no longer rely on its employees’ goodwill to cover their failings,” Mr Kitchin said. “With staff at breaking point, there’s no choice but to seek help from the person ultimately responsible for the Department - the Minister for Education and Child Development, the Hon Dr Susan Close MP. The Government, as the employer, has a responsibility to ensure the wellbeing of employees and South Australia’s vulnerable children before it’s too late.”

As part of a wider campaign, the PSA has also launched a website on behalf of members containing a petition calling on the Minister to intervene and heart-wrenching real stories from Families SA members. Mr Kitchin said PSA members wanted to spread the message as far and wide as possible. “Child protection is everyone’s responsibility. We are asking all South Australians to throw their support behind vulnerable children, families and staff and sign a petition calling on the Minister to intervene before it is too late,” Mr Kitchin said. The online petition is available for signing at www.atbreakingpoint.com Families SA staff will present this petition to the Minister and consider the escalation of their action based on the adequacy of the Minister’s response. Families SA staff and supporters can also download posters and other campaign resources from the website. PSA members are encouraged to visit the website at www.atbreakingpoint.com for the most up to date information on this important campaign.

We’re at breaking point.

Families SA staff are dangerously overworked and under resourced. Hundreds of vacancies in the Department remain unfilled while children may be at risk. Enough is enough. If the Department won’t act, the State Government must. Sign the petition today at
