What is a food allergy? What can you do?

Food allergies are becoming more prevalent every day. Severe reactions can be life threatening if not treated immediately. In many cases, a dangerous breathing condition called anaphylaxis (an-a-fi-lak-sis) can result when a substance to which the casualty is very sensitive enters the body.

Anaphylaxis can happen within seconds, minutes or even hours of a substance entering the body. As a rule, the sooner the casualty's body reacts, the worse the reaction will be.

St. John Ambulance, Canada's leader in safety-oriented™ first aid training and products, advises that you can detect anaphylaxis and help the casualty, if you know what to do.

Signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis 1 . Itchy, flushed skin, raised skin rash (hives).

2. Sneezing, running nose and watery eyes.

3. Swelling of the airway.

4. A 'lump' or 'tickle' in the throat that won't go away.

5. Coughing.

6. Sense of impending doom.

7. Nausea and vomiting.

As the condition worsens, a casualty may experience:

4. Irregular and rapid pulse.

5. Swelling of lips, tongue, throat, hands and feet.

6.Shock.

7. Unconsciousness followed by stopped breathing and heart.

First aid for a severe allergic reaction When a casualty experiences a severe allergic reaction, they are in a life-threatening situation.

1 . Assess the individual and immediately call for medical help.

2. Stop any activity and place the casualty in the most comfortable position for breathing - usually sitting upright.

3. Some people with known allergies carry medication in the event of an attack. If the individual has prescribed medicine with them, help them take a correct dosage.

4. Stay with the casualty until medical help takes over. Monitor vital signs and try to calm and reassure the casualty, as fear and anxiety will make the condition worse.

Knowing what to do can mean the difference between life and death in an emergency.

Am b e d ka r’ s S oci a l a n d P ol i ti ca l Vi e ws The core of Dr Ambedkar’s political thinking is contained in two of his statements: (1 ) rights are protected not by law but by the social and moral conscience of society; and (2) a democratic form of government presupposes a democratic form of society. Social conscience is the only safeguard of all rights, fundamental or non—fundamental. The prevalent view, that once rights are enacted in a law they are safeguarded, is unwarranted. The formal framework of democracy is of no value.

Democracy is essentially a form of society, a mode of associated living.

The roots of democracy are to be searched in the social relationship, in the terms of associated life between the people who form a society.

Dr Ambedkar’s expertise as a constitutional expert went a long way in enshrining the concepts of political democracy in the Indian Constitution. To him, political democracy cannot last unless there lies at the base of it social democracy. Social democracy is a way of life which recognises liberty, equality and fraternity as the principles of life. Ambedkar knew that mere adoption of a democratic system of government in the Constitution would not be sufficient.

Equality in society, equality before law and administration, constitutional morality, lack of tyranny of the majority and developing public conscience are conditions for the success of democracy in India. The foremost condition for democracy, in Ambedkar’s opinion, is equality in

society as equality is the foundation stone where the notions of liberty and fraternity develop. He remarked that equality is the original notion and respect for human personality is a reflection of it. If equality is denied, everything else may be taken to be denied.

Dr Ambedkar also recognised the fact that the lofty ideals expressed in the Constitution would remain as they were, given the nature of contradictions inherent in society.

Absence of equality on the social and economic plane is a cause of contradictions. This has resulted in a society based on the principle of graded inequality on the social plane which means elevation for some and degradation for others. On the economic plane there are some in society who have immense wealth as against many who live in abject poverty. To deny equality in social and economic life would be putting political democracy in peril. If the contradictions are not removed, those who suffer from inequality will blow up the structure of political democracy which Constituent Assembly has laboriously built up.

%N»§¾¶ p«R+]¾¶ CII pushes entrepreneurship among SC/STs To encourage entrepreneurship among the scheduled caste and scheduled tribes, the private sector is gearing up to increase sourcing of goods from this section of society.

In this initiative,Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) will play an enabler role for India Inc. B.Muthuraman, the newly elected president of the industry body said.

CII intends to work closely with the Dalit Chamber of India boost the development of small enterprises and deepen reprsentation of weaker sections in the Indian industry, the later through training and other forms of facilitations that would enhance their employability.

"One of our goals is to increase sourcing of goods and services frfom SC/ST entrepreneurs by 1 0-20%" Muthuraman said. "50,000 SC/ST youth would be trained and an equal number of employments would be facilitated in 2011 -1 2" Muthuraman added.

Since Scs and STs are listed in a specific schedule of the Indian Constituion, they are eligible for certain benefits including reservation in educational institutions and also in government jobs. A couple of years ago, the government had stirred a hornet's nest by alleging that the private sector in the country was not pursuing an affirmative action policy aggressively vis-a-vis SCs and STs. The government went to the extend of proposing manadatory reservations in the private sector. just like in the government sector.

However, though corporates have been creating job opportunities for these communities SCs and STs, the private sector was against mandatory reservations. Observers had said that hiring without considering merit will impact the sector and coud leade to some imbalances within their rank and file.

CII is working with these sections of the society to improve their skills so that getting an employement becomes easier. According to CII, SC/ST communities form 1 8% of the workforce in the private sector, but date show they have a negligible presence in managerial or top positions in India Inc and form a larger pie of those employed in lower posts.

Encourage Children to Study

Most children do not like to study. Why talk of children? Even most of us also do no like to study. We like to read novels, detective stories and see movies but avoid reading books of science or philosophy or studying a new subject. This natural tendency is easy to explain. Novels, movies and tasty dishes give us immediate please. However, while studying we have to read every word carefully, concentrate on the subject and get our difficulties and doubts solved from the teacher. We have to struggle and make special efforts to understand the subject. We have to undergo a phase of displeasure before enjoying pleasure of knowledge.

Younger the child, more important it is to make the subject interesting by telling related stories and giving suitable examples.

It is important to check intermittently that the child has understood the subject well. If he has not understood the principles of subjects like mathematics and science and you are unable to explain, take the help of an experienced teacher.

If the child has failed, do not insist to promote him to the higher class, as it will be difficult for him to cope up with the subject later if his base is not sound. If the child has failed, do not scold him. Excessive scholding may lead to development of inferiority complex and the child may give up his studies. Sympathise with him. Analyse the reason for his failure and try to correct them.

Check the environment in your house. A happy, carefree and studious atmosphere is essential for study. In ancient days the students used to go to the Ashram i.e. residential university situated away from the city and villages. Now the changed system of education has increased the responsibility of parents. Hence, you have to see that the studious atmosphere of such university is maintained in your home. You should not switch the television or radio on if the child is studying. You have to settle your quarrels i.e. quarrels between husband and wife either when the child away or asleep. If a marriage procession is passing by the road, don't leave your cooking and rush to see the procession. Your son or daughter who is studying will be naturally tempted to follow you. If you cannot resist the temptation of seeing the marriage procession, how can you expect your son to resist it and continue his study.

Teach him his lessions every day rather than just asking him whether he has understood the subject or if he has any difficulty. If your son is in college and you cannot take his lessons, at least give him company for sometime while studying. Read a book on philosophy or science or poetry. Study it and make your own notes. Let your son or daughter realise that you are also studying. Remember that children like to imitate.

It is better that the child gets used to studying at a particular place in his study room.

The child should study the difficult subject when his mind is fresh and preferably study the same subject at the same time every day. The child shouldl be trained to read a paragraph and summarise it in two lines and leter summarise the points in the entire lesson. If it is difficult to concentrate for more the forty five minutes at a time on one subject, let him relax for sometime and later change the subject.

Sometimes keeping the photograph of God or the Saint whom he likes on his study table promotes self confidence. Meditation also helps to increase concentration.

As a constitutional expert he believes that, the lofty ideals expressed in the Constitution would remain as they were, given the nature of contradictions inherent in society. Absence of equality on the social and economic plane is a cause of contradictions.

The leaders of the caste Hindus were fighting for their political independence, but it was the mighty task of Ambedkar to bring the Untouchables to the level of human beings. There had been no representative like Ambedkar, who would have cared to bring the untouchables in the political picture of India.

Those who were fighting for political independence were equipped with resources of wealth, position and strength to fight for their advancement. But Ambedkar was fighting for the rights of those people whose minds, views, hearts, emotions and aspirations were trampled upon in this land for ages past. His was a nobler goal, a nobler task, a mightier endeavour, more momentous than the task of winning political independence. In his success lay the success, strength and safety of Indian Democracy and the Indian Nation as a whole.

Thus, Ambedkar’s efforts were directed to the lasting good of the Depressed Classes.
