Frenchesca Dela Pena Welcome to the 22nd Annual Pilipino Graduation!

My name is Frenchesca Dela Pena and I am the President for Pilipino Graduation for the 2021-2022 academic school year. This year’s P-grad board (Serenit-E Board) is proud to host the first in-person Pilipino Graduation in 3 years. This achievement would not have been possible without the support of the Class of 2022, our alumni, and our members.

The Class of 2022 has shown great resilience and perseverance during their journey of higher education. From being in-person to going online, to transitioning back inperson, you have experienced it all. We recognize the hardships that you have experienced because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the strength that you have exhibited to get to this point today. Your determination to complete your degree despite the uncertainty of the world is admirable and we are proud to celebrate your achievements today. Congratulations to the Class of 2022!

This year’s theme is “Para Sa’yo” and translates to “For you”. You all have different reasons for pursuing a higher education. “For you” can mean for your family, for your dreams, for yourself or a combination of reasons. Whatever you choose to do in the future remember who or what you’re doing it for. Whatever the reason, you are able to stand here today, with pride atop all your accomplishments.

To all our graduates, we hope that you are able to celebrate your achievement with whoever or whatever inspired you in the first place. Para Sa’yo.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER 2021-2022

Megan Dela Cruz Megan Dela Cruz is a queer, disabled Pinay who has been organizing with different Fil Am communities from the Bay to LA. While she was at Cal Poly Pomona, she was student organizer, serving in various different roles in housing, Barkada, PASK, and P-Grad while working at the Asian and Pacific Islander Student Center, where she also helped start the peer mentorship program.

Since graduating with a degree in Gender, Ethnicity, and Multicultural Studies, she’s continued her education, receiving her MA in Asian American Studies at San Francisco State University, completing her thesis that researched the effects of deportation on a Filipinx American family.

In the time of COVID, she worked with the national Stop AAPI Hate campaign as a researcher and one of the inaugural Youth Campaign Coordinators to combat the wide-spread antiAsian violence. During her time at SF State, she was a teacher ith Pin@y Educational Partnerships (PEP) where she taught Asian American Studies to high school students.

Megan has also continued to build with communities in Southern California in varying roles. She is currently a general member in FANHS OC/IE building an archive of Filipinx experiences in Orange County and the Inland Empire. She also organizes with Lakas Mentorship Program, where they build a space for Filipino/a/x American high schoolers and college students from southern California to connect and explore different facets of Filipinx/a/o American identity. Finally, she is a community organizer with Kabataang maka-Bayan, ProPeople Youth LA, where she organizes in Historic Filipinotown and is in the process of creating curriculum around HiFi, its rich history, and current movements while building towards a liberatory education.
