Welcome to Reach, CPO’s treasury of resources to support you, your church or your charity in outreach and discipleship.

What does Easter mean to the average Brit? The chance to eat copious chocolate eggs, enjoy the lambs frolicking in the spring sunshine, and have a profound thought or two about new life as leaves bud on dead-looking branches perhaps?

But there’s so much more to Easter isn’t there? Paul zeroes in on the heart of the matter in 1 Corinthians: ‘Christ died for our sins… he was buried…he was raised on the third day...’ (15:3-4) This is radical, transformative, earthshattering stuff, and the world needs to hear it.

We’ve structured this issue of Reach a bit differently, because we want to make it as easy as possible for you to use our resources to communicate the message of Easter to your communities. We want to give you ideas and support to use banners, posters, invitations, your website, your magazine, your social media and more to proclaim Jesus died, rose from death, lives today and has opened heaven wide in welcome.

Why visual consistency matters.

Everything will arrive at your home or church for you to display and distribute.

A personal invitation is best, so equip and inspire your church to share with friends and the community. Make use of our matching social media images on page 21.

We produce design ranges in different formats so you can make sure your invitations match the posters on your noticeboard which match the screens or the tract you hand out at the end.

Consistency matters because it builds familiarity which in turn leads to trust.

Before people feel comfortable to engage, more than one contact with a visual idea or information is needed.

That means that when you publicise your events, you need to allow enough time, and enough interactions to get your friends and community to notice.

The words below are in the leaflet above. The leaflet can be used as an invitation, an order of service or as an evangelistic tract. All the designs on the page have a simple and different gospel message, relating to their image. You can find the wording for the other designs at cpo.org.uk/leaflet ‘Hope’ is a resonant word. I wonder what it means to you? I wonder if you hope, and if you do, why you have reason to ‘expect with confidence,’ as one definition puts it. There are plenty of reasons to despair and sometimes hoping for a good outcome is simply a refusal to face facts.

For Christians, Jesus death and resurrection gives us the unshakable hope of eternal life with God, of the ultimate end of suffering. This hope is a strong bridge over the deep ravine of life. One day at a time we can walk forward with confidence that the way ahead is safe and clear.

Here are three tips for using your website to reach out effectively: 1. Have the information people will be looking for This might seem obvious, but it is surprising how many churches omit basic details such as service times, parking information, contact details and key staff. If your buildings are available to hire or you host a toddler group or seniors’ social event, make sure there is clear information about those things too.

2. Be mindful of potential newcomers Anyone considering coming to your church for the first time is likely to look at your website first. Having a menu tab especially for them will give them a warm and welcoming first impression. We suggest it includes things such as the duration of services, music style, parking, refreshments, dress code, provision for children, and reassurance about safeguarding.

3. Make sure your website reflects reality If your church is small, elderly and traditional in style, a website featuring stock photos of piles of smiling children and a crowd of youngsters waving their hands in the air is going to give a false impression and undermine trust as soon as a newcomer walks in the door and realises they’ve been deceived. It is always wise to present who you really are on your website.

NOTICEBOARDS The (often untapped) potential of the church noticeboard Next time you drive through a new town, make a point of looking at church noticeboards as you go past. Firstly, just consciously acknowledge their existence. A business would have to pay through the nose for such a prominent, public-facing communication tool; churches often take them for granted.

As you drive along, how many church noticeboards can you read or understand from your car? Vibrant colours, few words in a large, clear font, engaging images – all these make it easier to catch the eye of passers-by.

How many have displays that are clearly relevant to the season or the context?

Many might be faded or neglected. What impression does this give about what goes on inside the building?

A noticeboard may not be the most obvious or exciting mission focus, but it is a mission opportunity. Outside, some churches have moved their boards to the car park where they’re most visible. Inside, some churches use snapframes on toilet doors or in bathrooms.

 “I was born in a council house in Ipswich and educated, if that’s the right word, at the local comprehensive school.

I left with one ‘O’ level and a very violent attitude.

Worse still, I’d dabbled in the occult and encountered dark forces. These things whipped together to produce a perfect, awful storm and, in a pointless street-fight, I slashed an adversary’s face and was arrested.

I was given an 18-month custodial sentence, which I loved, and on my release, I moved to Brighton to ramp up the darkness. I fell in love

with a prostitute, joined a football hooligan gang and took all the drugs I could find.

God, however, had other plans.

On the evening of Wednesday 11th May 1988, I was getting stoned at a drug-dealer’s house in Worthing and he offered me a job as a debt-collector ;I jumped at the opportunity.

In that unlikely setting, God reached out and offered me love and I didn’t even know what it was. What I did know, in that instant, was that Jesus personified it.

KINDNESS When we care for others we communicate this: 1. God loves you As Christ’s body, we act on his behalf when we feed the hungry, house the homeless, foster or adopt the parentless, conserve habitat for wildlife, befriend the lonely and advocate for the powerless. FAQs AND T&Cs What if I like the design but want to change it slightly?

In many cases we can alter words and colours for you, or possibly more. Email enquiries@cpo.org.uk or give us a call and we’ll see what we can do.

Can you print my own design?

Yes! At cpo.org.uk/printshop you can get an instant quote with lots of format options. You can easily upload your own PDF and we will print your own design for you. We can handle big or unusual print and mailing requests too. Just ask.

Do you provide jpegs and downloads?

Whenever you customise one of our Easter designs online, you’ll automatically receive a digital image file of your customisation, for you to use in social media, website and news sheets. Just head to your ‘My Downloads’ section in your account and you’ll find it there. You’ll also find free JPGs and Facebook banners at cpo.org. uk/digital. Some Easter designs have PowerPoint backgrounds available.

What if I want a design in a different shape or size?

The chances are we can print any shape or size you want, but to make sure, email us or give us a call.

Tell me more about customisation and P&P charges.

You can add your own words online for £5 per customisation using our overprint tool. Or if you want images, a particular layout or just want to email your words in Word or Powerpoint, email us and our designers will do everything for you, usually for £20. We print to order where we can. P&P includes handling costs which as a charity we need to cover.

Do you offer training or any other help?

We are putting on training sessions in 2019 on various communication-related subjects. We also offer to come and put on training events in your church. Go to cpo.org.uk/support to find out more.

Payment and Delivery UK handling and delivery charges are as follows: Under £14.99: £3.00, £15.00-£49.99: £6.00, £50-£99.99: £9.00, £100-£149.99: £12.00, £150-£199.99: £16.00, £200+: £20.00 International charges at cpo.org.uk/postage.
