THE SAUDI ARABIAN AUTO-INDUSTRY STEPS UP A GEAR A change in the production cycle of T&FME gave me the opportunity to spend a lot of time on the stand and in the conferences at Automechanika Dubai in the beginning of October. We’ve spoken a lot about the potential of the Saudi market over the past year in the magazine, honestly, a lot of this has sounded a lot like hot air. Blame a couple of decades of seeing announcements and exciting projects and initiatives be blown away in the desert wind. I’ve always had a nagging suspicion that we were just one market change or decision away from The Kingdom falling behind again – as it so often has. But at Automechanika, I got a real sense of movement. Of change. Much of the talk was about companies moving their people over to Riyadh. I lost count of the amount of times I was told during the week that I needed to go to NEOM, the northern metropolis being carved out of mountains. Others told me that Saudi was now their main focus. Their stand in Dubai a stopover before they strip down and move it all to the next big event across the border. Of course, much of this remains hope. The sort of hope that drags wagon trails across a continent to a golden promise. And I do think that

a note of caution is warranted. There rightfully should be questions asked about whether the timescale and growth that’s needed to accommodate all the ambition is laudable or realistic. The Saudi gold rush could yet end up a tale of too much, too soon. Can Vision 2030 really be more than an aspiration, a dusty target? Can it really be the rigid nation building exercise that it is intended to be, if it is already running into the sort of logistics problems that beset moving millions of dreams at breakneck speed. Better then, to rely on data and information. The hard evidence that this is more micromanagement than macromirages. Thankfully, Automechanika Dubai gave me the chance to talk to one of the architects designing KSA’s future as a powerhouse autohub, Aftab Ahmed of the Saudi Natonal Industrial Development Cetner. He laid out some compelling arguments about why we should start taking KSA seriously when it comes to building an EV-powered auto sector. He’s confident the Kingdom will reach its 500k vehicles target by 2030 and become the regional home for a new generation of vehicles. The message: we should all take Saudi seriously. Listening to his razor focussed clarity it was impossible not to.

Lucid Air opens ground-breaking car assembly plant in Saudi Arabia THE AMP-2 FACILITY BEGINS SEMI KNOCKED-DOWN (SKD) ASSEMBLY OPERATIONS AND IS EXPECTED TO ROLL-OUT 5,000 CARS ANNUALLY ASSEMBLY Lucid Group has opened its first evet international Advanced Manufacturing Plant (AMP2) to produce Lucid’s electric vehicles for Saudi Arabia and export to other markets. The establishment of AMP-2 received substantial support from the Ministry of Investment of Saudi Arabia (MISA), the Saudi Industrial Development Fund (SIDF), and the Economic City at King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC). It is expected to play a pivotal role in Saudi Arabia’s strategic initiative to diversify its economy. Lucid’s commitment to electric transportation aligns with the Saudi Green Initiative’s goal of ensuring

that 30% of new car sales in the Kingdom are electric by 2030. Peter Rawlinson, CEO and CTO of Lucid Group, expressed his excitement, stating, “We are de-lighted to make history today in Saudi Arabia by opening the country’s first car manufacturing facility, which will produce our award-winning electric vehicles and support the country’s vision for a more sustainable and diversified economy.” The AMP-2 facility has initiated semi knocked-down (SKD) assembly operations with an annual capacity of 5,000 cars. Initially, it re-assembles Lucid Air vehicle ‘kits’ pre-manufactured at the company’s U.S. AMP-1

Manufacturing Facility in Casa Grande, Arizona. Lucid’s longterm goal is to transition AMP-2 to complete build unit (CBU) production, with an additional annual capacity of 150,000 cars, ex-pected to be achieved after the middle of the decade. AMP-2 is not only a hub for innovation but also a source of job creation and skill development. Through a partnership with the Human Resources Development Fund (HRDF), Lucid aims to employ hundreds of Saudi nationals initially, with plans to grow the workforce into the thousands, in line with Vision 2030. The new collaboration aims to attract, train, and

retain talent to build a skilled and localised workforce. Situated near Jeddah, the plant’s strategic location on the Kingdom’s Red Sea coast provides robust supply chain access by land and sea. It positions Lucid to export its luxury electric vehi-cles to other regions in the future, further fostering domestic supply chain growth and creating demand for local suppliers. Faisal Sultan, Vice President and Managing Director Middle East at Lucid Group, emphasized the significance of the facility’s opening, stating, “The opening of our facility today marks the begin-ning of our production operations to assemble our world-class Lucid Air.”

HYDROGEN-POWERED MIDIBUS HYDRON MAKES ITS GLOBAL DEBUT / GEELY’S MONJARO SUV HAS BEEN LAUNCHED IN THE UAE BY AGMC

LAUNCHES FCEV LOOP 30KW

World Premiere: Hydrogen Midibus HYDRON LOOP ENERGY DRIVES STATE OF THE ART DESIGN FOR VENERABLE ITALIAN BRAND Sometimes it appears in the bus and coach industry, that there is the salient question of “Battery versus Hydrogen” as a means of energystorage and provision. But in fact it is not the question to say A or B, but sometimes both! RAMPINI is therefore the first manufacturer to offer a compact Midibus with a well-sized battery and a hydrogen range extender to combine the best of both worlds. Basically, every hydrogen bus is a electric bus – the defining question is just, how big are battery and fuel cell and their relevance for the Traction System. The somewhat small-sized battery pack (175 kWh) is supported by a compact 30 kW fuel cell by the Canadian manufacturer Loop Energy. Due to the innovative eFlowTM architecture of the company, the fuel cells offer a

10 OCTOBER 2023

16 percent lower consumption of precious hydrogen while at the same time boasting up to 90 percent higher peak power and ten times better current density uniformity with the same stack size. The superfluous heat of the fuel cell as well as the traction is harvested efficiently and supports the heating for the drivers or even the passengers area. The fuel cell is managed by the Rampinis own “Hy4Drive”-System, which has a 10.000 hours lifespan. It has a preheating for winter, and can be started even in very cold weather after a short waiting time. The three Luxfer Type 3 flasks with 350 bar pressure hold ca. 15 kg of hydrogen in a modular frame. With this amount of Grade D Hydrogen, the HYDRON is able to extend its range to more than 400 kilometers

in E-SORT 1 and almost over 500 kilometers in E-SORT 2 without heating or A/C. With Hydrogen alone the range can reach also 250 kilometers, what should be enough for a days service in most cases. Due to a partnership with the Italian gas supplier Sappio, RAMPINI is also able to support customers in the setup of their own hydrogen fuel station. The manufacturer has installed such a filling station on its factory premises in Passignano himself recently. The “Hy4Drive-System” offers four different modes of usage of the fuel cell and thus of the whole Drive System. The modes can be individually chosen by the driver in the vehicle System or the systems choses them automatically in case of a malfunction or of low battery energy. Generally, the fuel cell can

be activated only under 90 percent E-SOC and runs with low power between 90 and 93 percent E-SOC. The Range Extender mode is designed to maximize daily mileage using energy normally in proportion 40 percent battery and 60 percent Hydrogen energy, which equals the proportion of total on-board energy. Also is it possible to activate a “Pulse-Mode” of the fuel cell with given time slots, when it working or not. This is the ideal mode of driving to reach the best possible range, using battery as well as fuel cell Energy. The fuel cell alone can fill the battery up to 80 percent E-SOC (Electric State of Charge) in about 4 hours and 40 minutes, compared to 7 hours with a 22 kW external charger. In case of high power demand or when the E-SOC falls below 20 percent,

the fuel cell is set into a boost mode to deliver maximum power. Thus the Range of the HYDRON is minimum 100 km higher than that of the BEV ELTRON in E-Sort 1. In the Pure Hydrogen mode all energy comes from the stored Hydrogen (stored gaseous at 350 bar pressure). The LFP-batteries have only a peek shaving function during acceleration and also a buffer function

for storing regenerative braking (recuperation). State of Charge of Battery (E-SOC) is always kept around 90 percent and the fuel cell power can be manually adjusted between 50 and 100 percent. This mode is ideal, if the vehicle is supposed to run on the Batteries in the next service cycle. Pure Electric mode uses energy from the 170 kWhTraction battery only.

INTERVIEW

HOW FAR CAN

N.A.Z GO?

N.A.Z Industries CEO Adel Mir talks to T&FME about how the market is tipping in the favour of the trailer solutions firm in the region

E

stablished in 1996 in the Jebel Ali old industrial zone, which later became part of the Palm Jebel Ali development. N.A.Z Industries played a significant role during a period when the UAE was preparing for rapid economic growth and construction. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, the UAE experienced significant economic growth and construction. This period was characterized by a surge in infrastructure development and a growing demand for various products and services. At that time, most trailers in the UAE were imported from Europe, and they came with high price tags. This presented an opportunity for N.A.Z Industries (MAMMUT) to enter the market by offering high-quality products at more reasonable prices.

12 OCTOBER 2023

N.A.Z Industries (formerly known as MAMMUT) focused on producing highquality products. Over the years, the company has built a reputation for its products’ durability and performance. N.A.Z products are not only popular in the UAE but also have a presence in neighbouring countries. This suggests that the company has successfully expanded its reach beyond the local market. N.A.Z trailers rate as having some of the “best resale value in the market” highlighting the quality and reliability of its products. Now headquartered in a vast and modern new facility in Dubai Investment Park, the firm is determined to expand to meet a boom in demand from its customers. Speaking to T&FME, N.A.Z Industries CEO Adel Mir talks about playing a vital role in providing cost-effective and high-quality products, particularly in the field of trailers,

We are a full product provider. With our heavy trucks, the customer can get everything from one hand”

during a period of significant economic growth in the UAE and the broader region. This is a company determined not stand still to help fleets that are always on the move. Can you provide an overview of your manufacturing facilities and processes in the UAE?

We have recently opened a new 350,000 sqm production facility in Dubai Investment Park 2 (DIP-2) which we work in two shifts. We will also have a plot in the Freezone which is three times bigger than our facility in DIP 2 – that is under construction and should be ready in 2024. In addition to our own facilities, we have a local supplier (production contractor) under a long-term contract for the supply of beams and chassis for our standard trailers. Their sophisticated production line can produce a trailer chassis in less than one hour. Considering truckandfleetme.com

all the above facilities, we should be able to produce more than 400 trailers per month. What materials and technologies do you use in the construction of your trailers to ensure durability and reliability?

The chassis are built from high quality steel with high grades. The components including axles, hydraulic systems, lighting, brakes, landing legs and rims are all imported from Europe…mainly Germany and Italy. We follow 16 technical and engineering certificates and standards while manufacturing the trailers and our strict Quality Control (QC) department is checking the entire process from materials that are procured to the production process and final products. They are controlling the quality to ensure that products which are delivered to customers are standard, durable and reliable. Our products are warranted for one year, and after one year we provide service as well. It is important to mention that we do not get any major complaints for the products delivered to clients – and minor issues are rectified immediately.

A TRUE TEAM EFFORT Adel Mir says that people come first at N.A.Z Industries and that includes building a highly skilled and customer-focused team which is invested in its rapid growth. Happy people build successful businesses, he says.

and solution for their logistics. It is because of the quality, cost-effectiveness, durability and resale value of our products. We do not compromise on quality, even if the client insists to do so. Our philosophy is to have customers satisfied by the products they buy because that makes them come back to us again. You’ve recently moved into a new facility in Dubai, please explain why the time was right to make this move?

How would you sum up the NAZ approach to do doing business – what is the NAZ philosophy?

We believe in our products and service, and we know that we are recognised by the market as the number one choice when it comes to trailers

Over the past three years, the demand for our products has been increasing substantially. We had 80% growth from FY2021 to FY2022 and in FY2023, we expect to have more than 100% growth in terms of production and revenue. The expansion is due to the clients’ calls. We have

Over the past three years the demand for our products has been increasing”

started receiving lots of enquiries in the last few months which we probably could not cope with in our old facilities hence why we decided to move to bigger facilities while developing the even larger production hub in the Freezone. The last thing a production needs is disruption – how did you keep going during Covid?

Covid was a challenging time for us. The market demand was low, revenue had dropped and the overheads were high. Like many other companies, we had to reduce the salaries and asked employees to work online from home. Our workers were accommodated in temporary accommodation facilities inside the factory in order to avoid their interaction with other workers of other companies in the camp. The major challenges post-Covid have been the availability of the materials we need, and also the logistics challenges caused by disruption in the supply chain. Only long-term planning can be a solution for these issues, and we currently plan our procurement of components and logistics across two years to secure the materials and components we will need. From the types of trailers your customers are asking for, what can that tell us about the current market?

Actually, our business is run by our customers and their demands. We are not merely a manufacturer of standard trailers, we provide solutions for logistics, construction and other industries. The current market is different from one to another country. For instance, Qatar and the UAE do not have major construction projects, however, since they have made new cities and developments, they require waste management equipment. The situation is totally different in the countries that are announcing major construction projects. On that point, have you been surprised

There is not much construction activity in the region, bar Saudi Arabia. The total spending for major projects in KSA is around $172 billion over the next seven years. As a comparison, Burj Khalifah which is the tallest tower in the world cost $1.5 billion (AED5bn) back in the 2000s.

What is your distribution network like, and where can customers purchase your trailers in the UAE or internationally?

We have seven members in our sales team and we have representative offices in five countries in the region.

Do you support the recent changes to load capacity rules in the UAE? What impact will it have on you, your customers and the transportation industry going forward?

How do you stay updated with

We have started R&D into how to modify our existing trailers to coup with the new road regulation. It is an opportunity for us, because it increases the demand of the trailers with less payload. Currently, there are lots of trailers on UAE roads which are carrying much more load than it will be permitted under the new rules. All such trailers should be taken out and replaced by new trailers with less capacity.

INTERVIEW

THE COMMON

THREAD

Anand Hegde, Head of Commercial Tyres & Fleet solutions - MEA Region at Bridgestone EMIA, talks to T&FME about driving positive change in the market and industry

T

he mobility environment in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) is unique, marked by diversity and economic challenges. In this backdrop, Bridgestone’s commercial tyres and fleet operation is guided by the steady leadership of Anand Hegde. In a special interview with T&FME, Hegde paints a detailed picture of its position and vision and ensuring economic pressures do not nudge businesses to prioritise shortterm costs over long-term ownership.

What is your assessment of the current mobility continuum in this region and how and where is Bridgestone positioned in this spectrum?

In the context of the current mobility landscape 18 OCTOBER 2023

in the Middle East and Africa, it is essential to recognize the vast diversity that characterizes this expansive region. The numerous culturally distinct countries and populations present many different challenges in the Mobility space. One common thread across the region is the economic uncertainty, high inflation rates and the devaluation of foreign exchange exerting significant pressure on businesses to find ways to re-duce operational costs. Labor costs are low, safety awareness is not there and Customers are short term focussed on initial purchase price and not the Total cost of ownership which is through the full life of the tyre. Bridgestone has been the market leader in the Commercial tyres segment thanks to our strong brand presence, a product line that is specifically tailored to meet the unique needs of the Middle East region and our

extensive distribution network which ensures our strong connect with the End consumer. However, being a market leader comes with it a responsibility to drive positive change. We try-ing to shift the mindset of Fleet operators in the region to Sustainability, Safety and long-term total cost of ownership reduction. Our collaboration is not limited to just Tyres but the com-plete Fleet management process. With companies undergoing digital transformation, what do you think will be the new chal-lenges for the automobile industry in a digital ecosystem?

We are seeing a big shift in the way Fleets operate where information is the key. Fleet manag-ers want to know in real-time the health of their fleet and its operating efficiency. This truckandfleetme.com

includes Vehicle conditions, Fuel efficiency, Maintenance costs, Route optimization, Driver behavior etc to name a few. Digital solutions are now easily available across countries and we come across a progressive fleet using these Solutions even in an underdeveloped economy country in Africa. Bridgestone has made significant strides in embracing digital transformation within the auto-mobile industry. Use of RFID chips embedded into the tyres during production allows tracking tyres in real-time, offering valuable insights into tyre condition, usage, and performance. Tirematics Valve sensors for Tyre pressure and Temperature monitoring is one other Solution from Bridgestone which can provide alerts of low pressure. Maintaining optimum pressure improves safety, reduces fuel cost and extends Tyre life. The latest addition to the Bridgestone Digital Suite is WEBFLEET telematics solutions. Telematics technology allows for the remote monitoring and management of vehicles in a fleet. It provides critical data related to vehicle location, usage patterns, fuel consumption, and more. This data enables fleet managers to make informed decisions to optimize routes, reduce operational costs and ensure efficient fleet management. However, this digital evolution also raises concerns about data security, privacy, integration complexities and the need for training. As the industry continues to adapt, addressing these challenges will be pivotal in ensuring the successful integration of digital solutions and realising their full benefits. What are the sustainable

the Middle East and why?

In the Middle East, Bridgestone’s approach is guided by our philosophy of being a premium mobility solution provider. Rather than singling out specific markets, we prioritize market segments that demand premium products and mobility solutions. Our focus is on delivering value to users to meet diverse market needs and the complexities are many – Physical distribution, Financial instruments, Standards & regulations, Operating conditions etc require a unique flexi-ble approach. Our commitment lies in understanding and navigating these complexities to pro-vide the right products and services irrespective of geography.

How do automotive OEMs transition

At the core of Bridgestone philosophy is the E8 commitment to Sustainability. We are building tyres with increased percentage of sustainable materials and constantly working to improve this score without compromising safety and performance. We take pride in our market-leading Bandag Retread products which extend the life of Tyres and reduce waste significantly. Bridge-stone Tyres and Fleet solutions help in reducing fuel consumption with superior tyres, better tyre maintenance and efficient fleet management.

to electric vehicle manufacturing?

truckandfleetme.com

In the transition towards electric vehicles (EVs), especially within the realm of commercial vehicles, we are witnessing a growing interest from automotive OEMs. Leading EV truck manufac-turers are actively collaborating with Tyre manufacturers as they test their products in the harsh weather conditions of the Middle East. A lot depends on the National electricity grid in-frastructure of the country hence Governments will play key role in the roll out of EV trucks. We see

While we read a lot about Airless tyres concept, these are still in test phase and mainly targeting low speed operations in aggressive terrains but not for high speed ‘black top’ highways! Sus-tainability is another key aspect and we expect greater adoption of Sustainable materials and eco-friendly processes in tyre manufacturing. A lot has been spoken about the Tyres for EV vehi-cles which need to have higher traction, more silent and be able to Crry the extra load of the heavy batteries. The most significant shift though lies in new-gen tyres communicating in real time with the Fleet with data on temperature, pressure, wear, road conditions and Tyre maintenance needs. This data will be invaluable as it will allow for proactive care and enhance safety. We may not see a dramatic change in the fundamental tyre concept, the ability of tyres to communicate with vehicles and fleet managers will be a game-changer. As COP 28 approaches, there is a growing anticipation among the public regarding sustainability. Is it crucial to incorporate sustainability into your communication approaches in order to establish your brand’s credibility?

In preparation for COP 28, we at Bridgestone understand the growing anticipation among the public regarding sustainability. We are striving to communicate the benefits of sustainability to individuals across the mobility spectrum, from truck drivers to workshop technicians, fleet managers and fleet service users. And as to how it effects their families and future generations. As the market leader, we carry the responsibility to ensure that all people involved in the mo-bility process believe that sustainability is not just a buzzword but something that genuinely benefits and touches all our lives. At Bridgestone, sustainability is a priority as evidenced by our E8 Commitment which is our corporate commitment to address climate change by reducing our carbon emissions and invest-ing in a new energy economy. It serves as our framework for the transformation of our business model, paving the way for us to become a leader in sustainable mobility and advanced mobility solutions. OCTOBER 2023 19

SITRAK IS ON TRACK

FOR SUCCESS T&FME talks to Walid Eldessouki of Galadari Trucks & Heavy Equipment (GTHE) about the growing popularity of Sitrak and Chinese brands in the UAE 20 OCTOBER 2023

truckandfleetme.com

INTERVIEW

I

n recent years, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has become a focal point for global trade, tourism, and transportation. With the rapid infrastructure development and investment in road transport, there’s an increasing demand for reliable heavyduty trucks. Enter Sitrak, a product of the collaboration between China’s Sinotruk and a leading European manufacturer. This rising brand is making waves in the UAE redefining what businesses can expect from imported heavy vehicles from China. Sitrak, also known as Shandong Heavy Industry Group in China, is a relatively new name but has deep roots in truck manufacturing. With technical support and collaboration from its European partner, it offers advanced transportation solutions primarily for the Chinese domestic market and select international markets. The brand reflects a harmonious blend of European engineering with Chinese manufacturing efficiency. The region’s geographical position and its status as a trade hub necessitate a fleet of heavy-duty trucks that can withstand both the harsh desert environment and the demands of long-haul transport. Sitrak trucks, with their robust build and advanced cooling systems, are well-suited to this challenging task. Moreover, their competitive pricing, when compared to European or American counterparts, provides an attractive proposition for businesses looking to expand their fleet without significantly denting their finances. Sitrak trucks come equipped with modern technology, offering digital solutions for fleet management, fuel efficiency optimisation, and real-time tracking. Such features are essential for fleet businesses that prioritise efficiency and timely deliveries. In a region where temperatures can skyrocket, Sitrak’s advanced temperature management system ensures the vehicle’s longevity and reduced maintenance downtime. For any international brand, local partnerships are the backbone of success. Recognising this, Sitrak has collaborated with one of the strongest and best-known names in the UAE to provide comprehensive after-sales services, spare parts availability, and timely maintenance, namely Galadari Trucks & Heavy Equipment (GTHE). Speaking to T&FME, GTHE’s general manager Walid Eldessouki tells the magazine that plugging Sitrak into the Galadari network instils confidence in fleet businesses to invest in the brand, knowing

truckandfleetme.com

that they have local support when needed. Eldessouki says that one of the priorities has been to ensure that the trucks are ideally suited for local fleet customers. “Since I joined , I’ve received tremendous support from Galadari and Sitrak,” he says. “Together, we started taking customer feedback seriously and began ordering new trucks and making necessary modifications based on the customers’ needs.” “For instance, we have enhanced the AC compressor for this market. Similarly, some bearings have been upgraded to cope with the extra weight these trucks carry in the UAE. We also made changes to the mixer type, especially the hoses. Even the tyres were replaced to suit customer demands in the market.” As countries such as the UAE continuing their journey towards becoming a global trade and logistics hub, the role of reliable heavy-duty trucks becomes ever more crucial. Sitrak, with its blend of Chinese efficiency and European engineering , is well-positioned to serve the unique needs of the Emirati market. While it’s still early days, initial indications suggest that Sitrak could become a trusted name on the UAE’s highways in the years to come. “The market has been evolving rapidly, especially in the last two to three years. There’s a surge in the use of Chinese trucks now. Also, with the increasing competition, profit margins have become very thin, leading companies to cut costs wherever possible. Even the regulations have changed, affecting the way businesses operate,” Walid Eldessouki tells T&FME. One of the major changes has been the rise of fuel prices to levels that most fleets in the market have never had to consider. While still relatively low compared to international standards, Eldessouki says that this is still having an impact on many fleet businesses. He argues that a cost-effective option like Sitrak can ease some of those pressures when it comes to fleet renewal. “Yes, while fuel prices may seem low, businesses operate on thin margins. Even a slight increase in fuel prices can have a significant impact on profits. For example, a 5% margin is no real margin at all. It becomes even more challenging when you’re a subcontractor and are already working with tight budgets.” Another upcoming issue confronting fleet owners is the introduction on new restrictions on gross vehicle weights and combinations. From January next year, fleets will need to keep their loads down truckandfleetme.com OCTOBER 2023 21

and vehicle weights below 65t. It is an issue Sitrak and Galadari have been applying a large amount of thought and resources to ensure their trucks are ready for the changes. “The change in weight regulations has forced us to innovate. We’ve modified some of our trucks to reduce weight without compromising efficiency. For instance, we’ve worked on reducing the number of axles from three to two in some models,” remarks Eldessouki. “This focus on weight is primarily because of the new rules and fines associated with overloading.” T&FME has been told that many fleet owners in the UAE are now re-considering their fleet buying choices and leaning towards newer trucks rather than used

vehicles to accommodate the new changes. “With the changing regulations and the need for efficiency, many businesses prefer to invest in new trucks,” confirms Eldessouki to the magazine, adding that: “While used European trucks might be cheaper, new trucks like ours from Asian markets, offer better long-term value and performance. “For fleet companies, it makes more sense to invest in newer models, even if the initial cost is higher.” Eldessouki continues: “If we talk about prices, it’s hard to make a direct comparison. With Sitrak, which is a Chinese brand, you could say we have a compelling offer to fleets because if you opt for a European brand, the prices can sometimes reach up to double or even triple for a similar vehicle.”

PRODUCING TRUCKS AT THE HIGHEST STANDARDS Sitrak’s vast Jinan factory in China produces trucks to the strictest quality control standards, and is renowned for its blend of power, fuel efficiency and durability.

22 OCTOBER 2023

Individual owners often lean towards the European brands, but fleet companies are increasingly opting for newer Chinese brands like Sitrak because of advantages such as a two-year warranty and three if they opt-in to Galadari’s own aftersales support,” he tells the magazine. “The new weight rules have certainly caused a shift in thinking. Companies that were planning on buying second-hand are now considering the benefits of buying new trucks instead . They’re looking at it as a long-term investment, ensuring the trucks are compliant and efficient for the long run.” Sitrak was originally intended as a Chinese localised heavy truck range based on European truck technology. Showing T&FME a video of the vast and modern facility in China, he explained that the trucks produced there remain designed, prepared and produced in strict accordance with demanding quality control guidelines. The trucks now in the market represent more than a decade’s worth of effort, and Eldessouki says it shows in the final product. “Our trucks perform exceedingly well, especially when considering their price point. Our curb weight, for instance, is is one of the best in the market. When we discuss performance, it’s a blend of power, fuel efficiency, and durability. And from the feedback we’ve received, our customers are generally pleased with the balance we offer.” Much of the feedback is relayed back to the teams in China and that is fed into the continuing vehicle development he notes. Chinese automotive brands are enjoying a surge in popularity in the UAE, suggesting truckandfleetme.com

that the buyers are convinced more than ever that they will get the support they need once their purchase has been made. Especially at GTHE where they are able to access the deep support on offer via its extensive network. T&FME asks whether the teams at GTHE and Sitrak have observed a change in the market regarding the perception of Chinese brands, especially in the local trucking industry. “Definitely. A few years ago, Chinese brands might have been viewed skeptically. However, as the technology and quality have improved, they’re gaining respect in the market. Moreover, the cost advantage coupled with reliable performance has made Chinese trucks, like Sitrak, an attractive option for many businesses.”

We’ve modified some of our trucks to reduce weight without compromising efficiency”

The UAE’s Vision 2030 emphasises sustainable and diversified economic growth. By introducing efficient and technologically advanced trucks like Sitrak, the nation can move a step closer to this vision. Efficient logistics and transportation are key to a diversified economy, and brands like Sitrak should play a pivotal role in this. With changing regulations and market dynamics, what does the man that heads Sitrak charge in the market forsee in the coming years? “The future is about adaptability. As regulations evolve, we need to ensure our trucks remain compliant and efficient. We also need to stay attuned to customer needs and feedback. I believe if we to offer quality products at competitive prices and back that up with reliable after-sales service, the future is bright for Sitrak.”

AUTOMECHANIKA:

THE BUZZ IS BACK The largest international trade exhibition for the automotive aftermarket was the most exciting for a decade

F

rom 2-4 October and across 14 halls at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), this year’s Automechanika Dubai showcased a more diverse range of products, services and technologies to an international audience – and it felt like the best one in years. Organised by Messe Frankfurt, Automechanika welcomed 1,912 exhibitors from 61 countries and will feature 20 official country pavilions, with visitor numbers expected to exceed 45,000. Classed as a premier networking hub for the Middle East’s automotive aftermarket community, the 2023 event was intended to build on the success of last year’s edition, where C-suite professionals and managing directors accounted for 32 percent of visitors to the show.

Sometimes you have to look beyond the numbers however and on the showfloor, the message to T&FME was that the event was the best that many could remember and a sign that the venerable get-together can ride the mobility wave in the UAE and even benefit from the booming market in neighbouring Saudi Arabia. The show remains a shop window for a global cast-list of companies wanting to tie-up distributor deals in the GCC, but there were plenty of local players out in force to justify its billing as the region’s biggest and best aftermarket event. The conference and workshop programme remains a highlight although Automechanika still has the problem where many of the best discussions in the conferences are taking place in front of a handful of interested listeners. For a show that is leaning more and more into mobility, maybe the time is right for an

Sustainability and efficiency topped the agenda at the dedicated Innovation4Mobility zone, exploring alternate fuel vehicles, driving technologies, digitisation, connectivity and smart infrastructure. The opening session was delivered by Eng. Moza Alnuaimi, Director – Productivity & emand, UAE Ministry of Energy & Infrastructure who provided an overview of the UAE’s Vision of Future Mobility on the opening day. Also taking place was the Lubricants Technology Conference, located at PitStop 3 in the Trade Centre Arena, which was dedicated to exploring how the lubricant additives market can meet its environmental objectives, an issue of particular importance as 2023 has been mandated the ‘Year of Sustainability’ in the UAE. OPERATIONS

TRANSFORMED Karim Mansour, corporate account manager, Unifonic looks at the impact of an omnichannel customer engagement platform in T&L

B

usinesses and economies rely heavily on the transport and logistics industry in today’s fast-paced world. According to KPMGA’s study, 80% of transport and logistics leaders say their companies are focused on improving customer experience. As the demand for seamless connectivity and efficient delivery services increases, companies in this sector are constantly seeking ways to improve operations. The growing demand, increased customer expectations, and infrastructure limitations exert pressure on global supply chains and expose their inefficiencies. A single global shipment through this network of cargo ships, ports, airlines, rail lines, and trucking companies can involve as many as 30 businesses and up to 200 unique interactions, from its manufacturer to its final destination. The implementation of an omnichannel customer engagement platform has emerged as a game-changer in this regard. T&L companies can streamline processes, improve customer satisfaction and achieve success by leveraging modern technologies and integrating multiple 30 OCTOBER 2023

communication channels. This is vital in today’s digital age where customers demand convenience, transparency, and individualized experiences. By delivering a unified and consistent experience across various touchpoints, an omnichannel customer engagement platform enables transport and logistics companies to fulfill these requirements. This also allows customers to easily follow their shipments, get timely updates, request revisions, and give feedback through the channels of communication they prefer. Through this level of engagement, companies are more likely to build trust, loyalty and ultimately ensure retention of customers. Operational efficiency is of utmost importance in the transportation and logistics industry. By enabling real-time visibility, data analytics, and automation, an omnichannel customer engagement platform acts as a catalyst for operational excellence. Businesses can effectively acquire, engage and support their customers with the help of an omnichannel customer engagement platform, as it expedites inquiry processes and makes it easier to generate high-quality opt-ins, ensuring more

efficient operations. Through automatic notifications and a flexible booking system, businesses can also encourage repeat business and ensure secure transactions. It is thus safe to believe that the platform promotes efficient operations and maintains customer confidentiality by effectively reducing bottlenecks and prioritizing data privacy. Today, leveraging the high availability of data with AI, IoT, digital platforms and even 5G is critical for reaching customers on their preferred channels, orchestrating seamless journeys across their digital touchpoints, building instant connections over varied channels, and automating conversations and notifications. Unifonic, for example, works to modernize customer engagement ecosystems through omnichannel experiences. The platform enables omni-channel customer experiences through a unified solution, from price comparison to booking and customer service.

Technological advancements and evolving consumer expectations drive constant change in the transport and logistics sector. Businesses must pinpoint new opportunities, tailor their services and proactively meet changing customer demands by continuously analysing customer data, market trends, and feedback. In addition to ensuring survival, this proactive approach will place businesses at the forefront of a sector where innovation and customer-centricity are critical. Adopting an omnichannel approach to experiences is crucial for success in a sector as fast-paced and demanding as T&L. Companies can unlock greater efficiency, boost customer satisfaction and gain a competitive edge by streamlining communication channels, optimising operations, enabling partnerships, and also promoting potential development on the way forward for them. truckandfleetme.com

his Alpine Green Bentayga Hybrid bears witness to a global journey, featuring hand-painted skylines and iconic landmarks from New York, London, Paris, Rome, Milan, Venice, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. Each side of the vehicle serves as a canvas representing a different continent, showcasing 29 distinct landmarks. The striking artwork adorning this Bentley was brought to life by the talents of Stephen Wiltshire MBE, a British architectural artist renowned for his ability to capture the essence of a landscape from memory, even after seeing it just once. In a first-ofits-kind endeavor at the Bentley factory in Crewe, the “Belonging Bentayga” was meticulously handpainted, utilising a unique process developed by the Bentley Excellence Centre Bespoke Paint team. The automotive masterpiece goes beyond buildings and skylines; it incorporates intricate

illustrations of people from various nationalities, symbolizing unity within diversity. Bentley’s commitment to celebrating diversity is further underscored by this unique collaboration with Stephen Wiltshire, as the “Belonging Bentayga” marks the third art piece unveiled by the company to demonstrate its unwavering dedication to inclusivity. Wayne Bruce, Chief Communications and Diversity & Inclusion Officer at Bentley, expressed his delight at the collaboration, stating, “We’re delighted that Stephen has agreed to collaborate with us to create the ‘Belonging Bentayga.’ This remarkable car celebrates Bentley craftsmanship and Stephen’s unique artistic genius. It’s also a key element in our Beyond100 strategy, which includes our industryleading, five-step diversity and inclusion plan.” Bruce continued, “We’re very proud to be able to say that Bentley’s workforce is made up of people from 52 different nationalities, and our

diverse team handcrafts and sells our luxury cars in 67 countries from retailers in all the key cities of the world. The message that the unique and striking imagery of the Belonging Bentayga sends is that no matter where you live, you belong. Our culture of supporting everyone to be able to achieve their highest potential mirrors Stephen’s ethos of doing the best you can and never stopping.” Wiltshire’s journey from being a mute child diagnosed with autism to a world-renowned architectural artist has inspired countless: “Buildings have a way of telling a story, where you were born, your first job, the first church you got married, happy memories mean happy people. I have been on many travels throughout my career, and what stands out for me the most are the buildings, their architecture, and the people. I believe Bentley and the Belonging Bentayga relate in the same way, bringing people together, creating a journey, creating memories.
