WILL WE EVER SEE EURO 7 HERE?

First of all, a disclaimer. I could have just asked a rhetorical question there. But I’ve been thinking a lot over the last couple of weeks that in July we will be exactly two years away from the introduction of the Euro 7 standard in Europe and yet we are just about to embark on the e-truck era in the region (Read The dawn of a new e-ra on page 14).

Euro 7 is of course the latest stage in cleaning up the engines used in petrol and diesel vehicles. At every point, the auto industry has reluctantly complied (well, mostly…) despite the massive costs involved, but in the post-Covid and decarbonising time that we live in, there is growing discontent in the bloc at the attempt to enforce stricter emission controls.

The month of May saw eight EU nations including manufacturing powerhouses France and Italy call for the Euro 7 plans to be scrapped, claiming they are overly ambitious and unrealistic.

As Automotive News Europe reported, the countries said the tougher limits for pollutants including nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide could divert crucial investments needed to reach the EU’s goal of effectively banning new combustion engine vehicles after 2035. In a joint

paper, sent to other EU members, the eight countries said the parts of Euro 7 covering curbs on exhaust pipe emissions should be scrapped entirely.

“We oppose any new exhaust emission rules (including new testing requirements or new emission limits) for cars and vans,” France, Italy, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. said in the paper. And they might have a point.

Throughout my time on T&FME I have been told by OEMs that engine and low-emission development is an incredibly onerous exercise with diminishing returns. You don’t have to be a accountant or an economist to appreciate that diverting funds at this time seems counterproductive when even Europe is struggling to invest in charging infrastructure or hydrogen production that could power even greener alternatives.

Looking on from a market that is still transitioning to standards set almost a decade ago it seems like a nobrainer to skip Euro 7 altogether and instead focus on the alternatives, until you consider the lack of infrastructure to support them. Clearly some joined up thinking is required right now. It’s time to move the dial and get on with decarbonisation by working with and incentivising the auto-industry.

PRIVATE SECTOR MUST PLAY NET ZERO KEY ROLE

MOBILITY

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announcement of its ‘ZeroEmissions Public Transportation in Dubai 2050’ strategy, including the decarbonisation of transport by 2050 has been described as a bold move and an opportunity for the private sector to play a key role by Serco Middle East’s operations director for Transport Samantha Rowles.

Commenting on a move which makes it the first Middle Eastern agency to develop a long-term strategy for migrating towards Net-Zero Emission Public Transport by 2050, Rowles told T&FME: “This news is a major step forward for sustainability in the UAE. Dubai’s RTA has taken a bold and ambitious step to mitigate climate change and minimise its carbon footprint across public transportation, buildings and related facilities and waste management.

“As the first Middle Eastern agency to highlight its long-term strategy, this will provide a catalyst for others to follow suit, and its efforts to operate with a purpose-led vision should be applauded.”

The private sector can have a key to play in the market in supporting government agencies taking steps to reduce carbon emissions, she adds.

“The steps to net-zero public transport is a welcome move, and with that in mind, it will be important to ensure that the customer experience remains world-class. Dubai has a real opportunity to set the agenda for environmentally friendly modes of transport, and in the lead up to COP28, with all eyes of the world on the region, it will be vital to ensure that the customer experience operates to the highest level.”

FIRST SUSTAINABLE AUTO PLANT SET FOR AD

MANUFACTURING

Sinaha Platform has signed an agreement with international partners to build the first automobile facility in Abu Dhabi dedicated to manufacturing automobiles from recyclable materials. The move is aimed at establishing Abu Dhabi as a prominent auto hub for sustainable production.

This initiative marks a significant milestone for the country’s automotive industry, contributing to the achievement of Operation 300Bn and the Abu Dhabi Industrial Strategy. The vehicles produced in this facility will feature eco-friendly and recyclable external structures, promoting environmental sustainability and incorporating technologies that

enhance fuel efficiency by reducing weight and material consumption.

In addition to catering to local demand, the factory will supply the international market with affordable, high-quality cars equipped with advanced four-wheel drive technology, the statement noted.

The agreement for the plant was signed by Kardous Mohammad

bin Salem bin Kardous Al Ameri, Deputy CEO of Sinaha, and Kirill Kuzin, Director-General of APAL International, during the ‘Make it in the Emirates Forum’ held recently in Abu Dhabi. The deal is also in alignment with the UAE’s upcoming hosting of the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) in November.

AJEX LOGISTICS LAUNCHES EXPRESS SERVICE LOGISTICS

AJEX Logistics Services, a Saudi headquartered Middle East specialist in express distribution and shipping solutions, has launched two new Express services: AJEX Domestic Same Day and AJEX Reverse Pick-up Service in Dammam, Riyadh, and Jeddah.

As Saudi Arabia’s e-commerce sector continues its growth trajectory, which is projected to reach some $20.16 billion by 2027, customers are expecting increasingly faster deliveries and hassle-free, efficient returns processes as the market matures.

While retailers diversify their offerings to cater to a wider range of consumer needs, same-day and reverse pick-up services are an increasingly critical differentiation amongst competitors in the retail and e-commerce space.

AJEX said that it recognises that reverse logistics is an essential component of the supply chain, “and that in today’s fast-paced world, speed is of the essence. The same-day delivery service will complement the reverse pick-up service, providing customers with a complete range of e-commerce express solutions.”

With its new services, AJEX said it aims to provide the e-commerce industry and online shoppers an outstanding and cost-effective experience, “helping customers stay ahead of the competition.”

“We are thrilled to introduce our new AJEX Domestic Same Day and AJEX Reverse Pick-up services in Dammam, Riyadh, and Jeddah,” added Tia Zhang, chief of Express Logistics at AJEX Logistics Services. “As the e-commerce market in KSA continues to grow, we understand the importance of providing our customers with faster and more convenient delivery and returns options. These new services will not only enhance our customers’ experience but also support the development of Saudi Arabia’s retail sector and Vision 2030 goals of economic diversification.”

AJEX is confident that its new service offering will be a game-changer for the logistics industry in KSA and is committed to maintaining its position as a leading logistics provider in the region.

TERRA TECH’S FIRST E-BIKES ARRIVE IN THE UAE

E-BIKES

Terra Tech, the MENA region’s first B2B-focused micromobility tech startup providing electric motorbikes with swappable battery solutions, has announced the arrival of their first fleet of electric motorbikes to their warehouse in Al Quoz.

This marks

a significant milestone for the startup as it supports the UAE’s Year of Sustainability, said the firm which also aims to accelerate the nation’s development towards emissionsfree delivery in the buildup to COP 28 later this year.

The arrival of Terra’s first electric motorbike fleet brings the firm one step closer to deploying its vehicles on the UAE’s roads and making electric mobility an accessible reality for the

local last-mile sector. The motorbikes and their swappable batteries have been developed and tested to withstand the UAE’s harsh heat conditions resulting in long battery life and a lesser need for batteries to be swapped frequently.

“As our bikes undergo final testing, our focus has shifted towards finalising agreements with prominent partners in the UAE’s last-mile sector,” said Hussam Zammar, founder and managing director of Terra.

TRUCKS

UD Trucks, a leading manufacturer of commercial vehicles, has taken a leading role in an international effort to address the global plastic pollution crisis. From 1 June, UD Trucks formally entered a partnership with the Arabian Ocean Rowing Team, to help make a difference by reducing plastic consumption both within its organisation and on an individual level.

The Plastic Pledge Project encompasses a range of important initiatives, each designed to make a significant impact on plastic consumption – currently, at least 11 million tons of plastic enter the world’s seas every year. The Plastic Pledge Project is in keeping with UD Trucks’ firm belief in corporate responsibility and its dedication to creating a cleaner and greener future, said the leading Japanese commercial vehicles firm. By actively addressing the challenges posed by plastic waste, UD Trucks said it aims to set a precedent for sustainable practices within the automotive industry and inspire others to join the cause.

UD Trucks will implement employee awareness and training programmes, ensuring that each member of the organisation understands the importance of reducing plastic waste, and actively participates in the initiative. Additionally, UD Trucks will engage with suppliers and partners to encourage them to take initiatives for sustainable packaging and plastic reduction efforts. As part of its “Better Life” strategy for the planet, UD Trucks will organise plastic-free events and actively support recycling and waste management practices.

INSIDE THIS ISSUE: THE DAWN OF THE E-TRUCK ERA IN THE UAE, MAN GEARS UP FOR NEW TRUCK PRODUCTION, MUCH MORE!

ACCIONA’S FIRST NANOCAR ROLLS OUT OUT OF ZONA FRANCA

ELECTRIC VEHICLES

The first Silence S04 vehicles in series production at ACCIONA’s new automotive factory – located in Barcelona’s Zona Franca – have already started to roll off the assembly line. The new plant, spanning over 60,000 sqm, combines state-of-the-art technology with a highly experienced team of professionals, many of whom come from the traditional automotive sector.

Everything from chassis construction and the coat of paint to the assembly of all components is carried out in the Zona Franca Factory. Batteries will also be produced at this facility in the future, although in this initial phase they will come from the company’s factory in the nearby town of Sant Boi de Llobregat.

The first nanocar, the Silence S04, combines technology and a compact size to create a four-wheeled vehicle that is 100% electric and specially

designed for urban driving. The two-seater model –which combines the safety and comfort of a car with the agility of a motorcycle– paves the way to the urban mobility of the future with a comfortable, safe, sustainable vehicle that is also easy to park due to its small size.

The comfort of the S04 goes beyond parking ease, as it is specially designed to optimize the interior

space. The two seats have a staggered arrangement, which provides spaciousness and greater freedom of movement to the occupants. The trunk, with a capacity of 247 liters, can store shopping bags or two passengers’ usual luggage. The first version on the market is the L7e, equipped with two batteries, which offers 14kW of power, reaches 85km/h and has a homologated range of 149 kilometers. This will be followed

later on by the L6e, the version without a driving license requirement, with one battery and 6kW of power, which reaches a maximum speed of 45km/h.

The batteries are removable and come with wheels and a handle for convenient and safe trolley-like transport. In addition to charging the batteries directly in the vehicle, this model also makes it possible to remove them and charge them easily from any socket.

The brand also offers the possibility of purchasing the S04 without batteries and subscribing to its Battery Station service. With this system, the driver can locate the nearest battery station and swap batteries thanks to the Silence app. Once at the station, the drivers can leave their empty batteries in the vacant charging units and pick up another fully charged pack. The whole operation can be done in just 30 seconds, with no waiting time.

BEEAH SETTING NEW STANDARD IN RECYCLING

SUSTAINABILITY

BEEAH, ISWA and Roland Berger are set to develop the first certified global standard for recycling credits. Developed using blockchain technology, the platform aims to facilitate collaboration between jurisdictions and enable transparency across the waste management value chain. The platform will create a global market-based incentive scheme and standard measure for recycling recognition and rewards, which will bridge the gap between the global sustainability agenda and the private sector and push the transition towards a global circular economy, said the parties in a statement.

The dedicated marketplace, to be revealed during the upcoming 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), will connect waste producers and waste management providers to create a virtuous loop. The partnership is currently developing

the standard’s framework and technology. The platform will be revealed at COP28 in Dubai.

Organisations which recycle waste with verified sustainable waste management providers receive Voluntary Recycling Credits (VRC). The use of the platform enables them to track the recycling activities in a transparent and standardized process and helps to realise their

sustainability targets. The MoU was signed by Firas Wahbeh, chief marketing officer, BEEAH Group, Carlos RV Silva, president, ISWA, and Hani Tohme, managing partner at Roland Berger Dubai. The signing took place in the presence of His Excellency Essa Abdulrahman Al Hashmi, Assistant Undersecretary, Sustainable Communities Sector,

UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, and Rahma Alshamsi, Lead - Hard-to-Abate, Energy Transition Team, COP28 Committee, UAE Climate Envoy.

“BEEAH Group has been working relentlessly towards a zerowaste to landfill future, which we see as closely linked to fulfilling the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative and broader sustainability agenda,” said Khaled Al Huraimel, Group CEO of BEEAH Group.

“The VRC platform will enable us to create new, sustainable efficiencies across businesses and industries when it comes to waste management. This new recycling standard will make positive impact for sustainability targets within the UAE and globally. We are also innovating to add new value to organisations that are managing their waste sustainably, enabling them to offset emissions and track their contributions to the national sustainability agenda.”

LAUNCHES

Ready to take the Crown in KSA?

Abdul Latif Jameel Motors has launched the highly anticipated 2023 Toyota CROWN into Saudi Arabia.

The authorised distributor for Toyota vehicles in Saudi Arabia since 1955, Abdul Latif Jameel Motors claims the arrival of the Crown marks “a new era of elegance, sophistication, and cutting-edge technology. As a testament to its unwavering commitment to excellence and its deep appreciation of its history, the 16th-generation CROWN showcases the unparalleled craftsmanship and dynamic driving experience that it is renowned for.”

The new Crown model can be driven entirely on electrical power with zero fuel consumption and tailpipe emissions, or by combining the power generated from both the

petrol engine and the electric motor, depending on the vehicle’s speed and customer’s driving behaviour.

The 2023 Crown features the first hybrid electric powertrain which consists of a front electric motor and Toyota’s first-ever 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder turbo engine, mated with direct shift six-speed automatic transmission.

A rear wheel eAxle that includes a high output water-cooled electric motor is coupled with the hybrid electric system to transmit force to the four wheels directly. These ensure “a thrilling throttle response” and linear acceleration throughout the power band, along with a combined power of 344 hp and 550 nm of torque, says Abdul Latif Jameel Motors.

A second hybrid electric powertrain consists of two electric

motors and a 2.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine, generating a total power of 218 hp. The hybrid-electric system, paired with an Electric Continuously Variable Transmission (e-CVT), achieves the fuel efficiency with a consumption rate of 26.1 km/l, “while elevating the driving experience to new levels.”

The hybrid-electric batteries are continuously charged by either the petrol engine or when decelerating and braking, eliminating the need to plug in a power cord. A host of advanced technologies ensure the hybrid-electric model drives like any other conventional vehicle and does not require special fuel.

“We proudly introduce the allnew 2023 CROWN in Saudi Arabia, as this iconic luxury sedan embodies Abdul Latif Jameel Motors’ commitment to excellence, delivering

the perfect blend of performance, luxury, and style,” said Mazin Ghazi Jameel, managing director, Toyota Marketing Operations, Abdul Latif Jameel Motors.

“The vehicle has enjoyed a rich and illustrious history in Saudi Arabia, where it has captivated generations of discerning guests with its timeless appeal and exceptional driving experience. We pay homage to this cherished legacy while introducing a vehicle that blends legendary reliability with cutting-edge technology, redefining what a luxury sedan can be.”

The Crown first made its debut in 1955 as Toyota’s first massproduced passenger vehicle.

According to the manufacturer, the 2023 Crown returns to its origins with “a new emblem that

truckandfleetme.com JULY 2023 13 LAUNCHES

THE DAWN OF

A NEW E-RA

A flurry of announcements

have opened up the race to decarbonise the UAE truck market

14 JULY 2023 FEATURE truckandfleetme.com

The e-truck era begun in earnest in the UAE during the past month as a series of events showcased exciting and genuinely new additions to the country’s electric vehicle fleet.

It kick-started in mid-May with eMobility and energy charging solutions provider Admiral Mobility, announcing a major partnership with vehicle hire company, Avis, to bring electric commercial trucks to the leasing market in the UAE.

Using trucks developed by Geely Farizon New Energy Commercial Vehicle Group, the new partners used the event to set-out how their strategic partnership will to deliver the GCC’s largest rollout of electric commercial trucks, and how they will be leased to fleets across the UAE.

Aiming for late-2023, the 6T and 8T e-trucks are set to be let out to companies who want to move towards cleaner, more sustainable fleets as part of their pledge to operate in more environmentallyfriendly ways, said the companies.

With a range of up to 220km, with full load, the zero emissions electric vehicle takes less than 90 minutes to fully charge via its efficient, and safe, liquid cooled CATL LFP battery. Advanced safety features include lane-keeping assist adapt cruise control, remote locking systems, high beam LED lights equipped with auto adaption to the surrounding traffic, and of course, ease of comfort of driving.

The launch backs up Admiral Mobility’s claims made back in December last year, when it announced a strategic partnership with Geely Farizon New Energy Commercial Vehicle Group to bring 5,000 electric commercial vehicles to the region. Building on the requirement to create ‘a green transportation industry’, Admiral Mobility has done extensive testing of the vehicles over the last six months to ensure they are fit for the GCC market when it comes to being both operationally and commercially viable.

“In our quest to ‘decarbonise’ the transport industry we are proud of our latest announcement, which represents a major step forward for both commercial fleets, and the UAE market,” said Graham Bremer, general manager, Admiral Mobility. “This commitment with AVIS UAE represents the largest rollout of EV trucks to be leased in the UAE to date. It is an exciting time to be partnering with a forward-thinking company the size of Avis, which has a major footprint in the commercial leasing market. We are looking forward to our vehicles hitting the road, as per our commitment to support the growing

demand for more cleaner transportation, be it for highways, the city or backroads, to ensure a cleaner environment for us all.”

Dominic Hagerty, general manager from AVIS UAE, explained that the agreement means that his firm will be able to offer businesses an attractive leasing model arrangement to provide complete flexibility for fleets who want to move towards a more sustainable mode of transport.

“The electric commercial trucks in this agreement represent a step change in commercial fleets, by being the first of its kind available in its category, any where in the GCC. We are truly excited to be a launch partner for this vehicle.”

According to AVIS and Admiral Mobility, the vehicles are expected to be available from August this year. With the UAE’s focus on achieving its Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) to provide access to clean energy and sustainable economic growth, the latest commitment from Admiral

Mobility and Avis UAE will further help build the ‘green transportation industry’, especially in the lead up to COP28.

Given the importance of being the host of the COP28 event it is unsurprising that other manufacturers and local fleets are focused on decarbonising their operations. The surprise is how rapid that other vehicles are also arriving into the market. Within days of the Avis and Admiral Mobility announcement, Abu Dhabi Waste Management PJSC (Tadweer), in collaboration with Renault Trucks Middle East and Al Masaood, launched the first 100 percent electric waste truck, the Renault Trucks D-Wide E-tech, in the UAE in Abu Dhabi. While the truck still awaits certification, it was still the first fully electric heavy truck to be ever launched in Middle East.

The Renault Trucks D-Wide E-tech has already demonstrated its effectiveness and performance in Europe, with urban centres like Paris and Barcelona adopting nearly 100 of the trucks each to fulfil their commitments to sustainability and their communities. T&FME had the opportunity to test drive the truck last year and Renault Trucks has since managed to reach 24.2% of registrations in the medium and heavy duty vehicle (MHDV) segment in Europe, with 379 Renault Trucks E-Tech D and D Wide vehicles invoiced.

With a range of up to 200 kilometres between charges, the trucks have already proven their worthiness from a zero-emissions and performance perspective. Now it gets the opportunity to prove its worth here.

VOLVO GROUP LAUNCHES WORLD’S FIRST E-TRUCK AR APP FOR FIRST RESPONDERS

Volvo Group is the first truck manufacturer to launch an Augmented Reality (AR) safety app for electric trucks, designed specifically to support first responders in an emergency. The app is developed to deliver instant, valuable information from the electric truck to the emergency services team arriving on the scene to guide them in real-time and ensure safe rescue conditions.

Electric trucks will change the world, not only in terms of making transportation more sustainable, but also in how we drive and interact with the trucks themselves. The technology involved – specifically the high-voltage systems capable of powering a heavy electric truck – is also changing how we regard emergency response,

as it requires its own set of new safety parameters and routines.

“We recognise the importance of ensuring the safety of first responders who are called to an emergency should an incident with an electric vehicle occur,” says Lars Stenqvist, chief technology officer, Volvo Group.

“The new AR app is a powerful tool

that can support the emergency services to quickly and safely secure the site, while minimsing the risk of injury to themselves and others.”

The Emergency Response Guide app, now available for download free of charge from the Android and the Apple stores, provides safety information for all Volvo Group heavy electric truck brands, including Volvo Trucks, Renault Trucks and Mack Trucks. For Mack electric trucks, the AR features will be added during June 2023.

By using a combination of connectivity, camera, sensors, 3D modeling, and augmented reality overlays, the safety app can provide first responders with a detailed view of the vehicle. It offers information on the location of high-voltage

cables, battery packs, and other key components as well as step-by-step instructions on how to safely shut down the electric vehicle’s power supply in case of an emergency.

The safety app has been developed by a team of experts at Volvo Group’s Research & Development facilities in Sweden, France, and the United States. Apart from augmented reality information and 3D models, the app also contains all safety documentation relating to the electric truck, which will be accessible to the app user once the truck is identified.

“The safety app has been tested in a variety of real-world scenarios and has received positive feedback from first responders who have tried it in the field,” says Vincent Barnoux, AR Expert & Business Solution Engineer at Volvo Group.

While Admiral Moblity is covering the last mile and Renault Trucks and Al Masaood waste management, FAMCO and Volvo have opted to target the heavy-duty transport segment with the Volvo FH e-truck.

During a spectacular evening at AlSerkal Avenue – Concrete and just two weeks after the E-Tech launch, the truck was revealed by FAMCO to a crowd of business leaders, media representatives, and business partners, including senior members

of Unilever, the buyer of the first truck.

Describing the launch as a groundbreaking achievement, FAMCO said the truck launch represents a “significant stride towards reducing transportation-related emissions to zero, aligning with the UAE’s sustainable development strategy as the whole country prepares to host the COP28 in November 2023.

“The UAE, known for its forwardthinking approach, embraces this new era of transportation with FAMCO at the forefront as the year of suitability unravels with green solutions and sustainable inventions every day.”

It added that introducing the Volvo FH

e-truck solidifies its position as pioneers in the market and a “commitment to sustainable solutions in transportation”.

Coming hot on the heels of the other two launches, FAMCO also sees itself as helping start a greener era for commercial vehicles in the market, just in time for the COP208 meeting. Unlike other vehicle ranges still in the testing or trial stages, its partner Volvo Trucks offers a full range of electric trucks that are tested and available for purchase, as the first truck was already sold to Unilever, the FMCG giant for their UAE operations.

“While we currently offer a wide range of hybrid and electric vehicles, the launch of the first-ever heavy-duty electric truck range by Volvo represents a huge leap into a greener future,” said Ramez Hamdan, managing director, FAMCO.

Speaking about being the truck’s first buyer, Ahmed Kadous, Unilever’s head of Supply Chain MENA & Personal Care Category in the Middle East & Turkey, said: “We have committed to achieving net zero emissions throughout our value chain by 2039. Logistics will play a crucial role in achieving this ambition as it contributes up to 15% of our emissions. To achieve this, we want to push our business beyond its current limits to see how we can address the current environmental crisis. This is why we are pioneering the green transportation movement in the UAE, and this electric truck forms the second addition to our delivery fleet. Earlier in March we added the first Electric Van (EV) to our UAE delivery fleet, which was also the first in the UAE.”

MAN Truck and Bus talks preparing to manufacture an e-truck for long-distance transport in 2024

18 JULY 2023 FEATURE truckandfleetme.com
THE

With the transformation to climateneutral drive systems, road haulage is facing a groundbreaking change. MAN will start production of its electric long-haul truck in 2024. There are already more than 500 order enquiries.

“The technological upheaval is in full swing. As early as 2030, half of our trucks registered annually in Europe should be battery-electric. For this to succeed, we need the support of politicians: in the Europe-wide construction of around 50,000 public truck charging points and a CO2 price that makes e-trucks more economical than diesel,” said Alexander Vlaskamp, CEO of MAN Truck & Bus, during a drive with Minister President Stephan Weil in the new MAN eTruck to mark the 180th birthday of commercial vehicle pioneer Heinrich Büssing at the MAN plant in Salzgitter.

The site, which was founded as a Büssing plant and was later taken over by MAN together with the tradi-tional brand, will also play an important role for electric trucks in the future as part of the MAN plant network and the parent company TRATON with its focus on component production and spare parts logistics.

“The technological change affects everyone. That is why qualified employees are a key to success in the transformation. Here, too, active support from politicians will be needed in the coming years to counteract the shortage of skilled workers and to keep future technologies

in Germany,” said MAN Truck & Bus chief human resources officer Arne Puls, naming another important aspect for the transformation during the eTruck drive in Salzgitter.

Because in production, for which MAN has already trained a total of 2,600 employees in high-voltage technology, but above all also in the development of electric technology, a lot of new know-how is required so that e-trucks can be used in a wide variety of practical applications in the future.

For example, in order to be able to cover long transport distances electrically, long-distance trucks should be able to be fully charged during the drivers’ 45-minute driving time break. MAN is involved with

numerous partners in the development of the megawatt charging system (MCS) required for this through the NEFTON project.

The new MAN eTruck is already technically prepared for this MCS standard, which is expected to be available from 2025.

Long-distance daily ranges of up to 1,000 kilometres will thus be possible in the future. And with its variable battery configurations between 300 and 500 kWh of usable capacity, it will also easily cover other typical transport tasks of today’s trucks, such as low-noise and emission-free waste disposal in the city or the more climate-friendly collection of milk from organic farmers.

MAN is also making intensive preparations for electromobility in the area of charging infrastructure and is setting up 1,700 high-performance charging points for trucks along major European trunk roads over the next five years in a joint venture with TRATON and other partners. In addition, MAN is already providing customers with comprehensive advice on switching to electromobility and is also offering the necessary charging infrastructure through partners.

Production of the new MAN eTruck will start in 2024 at the main plant in Munich. In future, it will initially come off the production line there in mixed production with conventional diesel trucks. The concept, with which around half of all trucks produced annually by MAN are to be electric by 2030, also integrates MAN’s other plants. Krakow, for example, will produce larger numbers of diesel trucks as electromobility ramps up in order to create more capacity for electric trucks in Munich.

MIXING WITH TRADITIONAL DIESEL Production of the new MAN eTruck will start in 2024 at the main plant in Munich. It plans to mix production with conventional diesel trucks. KNOWHOW IS NEEDED FOR E-TRUCKS MAN has trained a total of 2,600 employees in high-voltage technology and in the development of electric technology. It says a lot of new know-how is required so that e-trucks can be used in a wide variety of practical applications in the future.

At the Nuremberg plant, MAN will start producing its own batteries in 2025, with the aim of producing around 100,000 of them annually from 2030. Salzgitter will also play a key role in the transformation as a component plant for non-driven axles and crankshafts for the new Group engine developed jointly by all TRATON Group manufacturers. In addition, the site is responsible for MAN’s worldwide spare parts logistics, which in future will also increasingly include electric components.

MAN Truck & Bus will start series production of the new electric truck at its Munich plant in 2024. The company has already trained 2,600 employees in the safe handling of high-voltage technology and new electric components in more than 17,000 training hours at the eMobility Centre created specifically for this purpose. The first series-produced electric trucks are expected to roll out to customers as early as the first half of 2024. Already now, about four months before the official sales launch, there are more than 500 order requests for the electric lion suitable for long-distance transport.

In order to ensure the smoothest possible production start-up of the new electric trucks, MAN has developed a completely new concept for production preparation with the eMobility Center. The future-oriented model includes not only the new electric truck but also vehicles with conventional drive systems - because both types of drive will be produced on the same production line in the future.

“In order for the transformation from combustion engine to electric truck to succeed sustainably in large industrial quantities, we must also rethink production,” says Michael Kobriger, Executive Board Member for Production at MAN Truck & Bus. “In particular, the phase in which our customers are already

demanding electric trucks in larger quantities but still need diesel trucks for certain routes requires innovative and efficient networking of product development and production planning. The integrative concept of the eMobility Center helps us enormously in this.”

In the innovative laboratory workshop, the necessary processes for future series production are developed directly during the production of the first prototype vehicles and, in parallel, the employees are already trained and qualified in the use of the new technologies. Conversely, they can contribute their know-how from practical manufacturing experience to the efficient and ergonomic design of production at an early stage. At the same time, requirements for later series production are incorporated into the vehicle development from the very beginning.

Around 30 prototypes of the new eTruck have already been created in this way at the eMobility Centre, and 26 more will follow this year. They are used by the test engineers for the toughest test drives in ice, snow and blazing heat to bring the new MAN eTruck closer to series production in big steps.

Compared to the conventionally powered truck, the electric truck naturally differs through completely different components such as electric battery and motor as well as high-voltage components and wiring. This makes the joint production of conventional and battery-electric vehicles on one production line comparatively complex.

The variable installation of batteries and electric motor on the one hand or internal combustion engine powertrain on the other will in future be made possible by modular components that can be used uniformly, especially in the chassis and wiring.

The great advantage of this mixed production: The respective share of electric vehicles and diesel trucks in the total production can be flexibly adapted to the actual market development. It is just two years since MAN laid the foundation stone for the development of the upcoming large-scale electric truck and the associated demand-flexible mixed production of electric and conventional trucks on one assembly line with the eMobility Center.

The recently launched REVAMP project aims to automate the process of assessing the condition of used vehicle batteries. With this knowledge, batteries are to be economically reconditioned for subsequent use in the vehicle (2nd-use) or for other purposes (2nd-life).

A consortium of nine partners from industry and science is involved in the project, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics

and Climate Protection (BMWK). The consortium leader is MAN Truck & Bus.

With the ramp-up of electromobility, a strong increase in used batteries is to be expected in the future. After the first use of the energy storage units in the truck, bus or van (1st-life), there are basically various options for a second use: reuse in the vehicle (2nd-use), use in another application (2nd-life), for instance, as stationary buffer storage, or, as a last option, recycling to recover the valuable raw materials. Of these alternatives, the reprocessing of battery components for a second use represents an ecological and economic alternative.

One challenge in connection with the remanufacturing of commercial vehicle batteries is that they have different ageing states when they come back for condition assessment. The fact that the shape, structure and manufacturer of the battery can be different is also one of the challenges of the REVAMP project. Therefore, it is very important that the entire remanufacturing system is designed flexibly and can react to the different states and battery characteristics.

This is the goal of the new research project REVAMP (Remanufacturing of variant battery modules with automated assembly and testing processes). The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) as part of the funding measure for “Research in Priority Funding for Battery Cell Production”.

The aim is to increase the use rate for

2nd-use and 2nd-life batteries in Germany. The project is supervised by the project management organisation VDI/VDE-IT. The basis for this process, called remanufacturing, which already exists for remanufactured engines or vehicle components, for example, is the condition assessment and automated dismantling of battery returns as the core aspect of REVAMP. On this basis, reprocessing, reassembly, testing and the reintroduction of the battery into the market are then researched.

The Machine Tool Laboratory (WZL) and the Institute for Power Electronics and Electrical Drives (ISEA) at RWTH Aachen University are involved in the REVAMP project. The Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology (Fraunhofer IPT) is also part of the project. From industry, the following companies are involved: Bertrandt Technikum GmbH, Software AG, IBG Automation GmbH, BE-Power GmbH, Wacker Neuson Produktion GmbH & Co. KG, Weidemann GmbH and MAN Truck & Bus SE as consortium leader.

The research project is being worked on in eleven work packages: Based on methodological and theoretical principles, procedures for condition assessment and 2nd-use and 2ndlife planning are being developed. Based on this, methods for the preparation of battery components at pack, module and cell level will be developed. In parallel, the flexible, automated disassembly and reassembly will be planned and the corresponding control components will be created.

In addition, a digital twin is being developed to map the entire battery life cycle. This digital twin will also be used for a life cycle assessment based on key figures in order to evaluate the decisions made for the subsequent use of the batteries and also to track the sustainability goals of remanufacturing. The results obtained will finally be validated in application-oriented tests and demonstrated in the eMobility technical centre at MAN in Nuremberg.

MAN RECEIVES FUNDING FOR DEVELOPING TRUCK & BUS BATTERIES IN NUREMBERG

About a year ago, MAN Truck & Bus announced its decision to build commercial vehicle batteries in largescale production at the Nuremberg site from 2025. The battery packs will be used to equip MAN’s electrically powered trucks and buses. While the electric MAN Lion’s City E city bus has already been in series production since 2020 and is experiencing strong demand, delivery of the new MAN eTrucks will begin in 2024. MAN will invest around €100 million for the development and production of the battery packs in Nuremberg. In addition, there will be investments in logistics, infrastructure, buildings and production facilities. The decision in favour of Nuremberg as the location for

MAN battery production is the result of close cooperation between representatives of employers and employees as well as politicians.

Production of the battery packs in pre-series and small series on a smaller scale has already started in 2021. From 2025, battery production will be gradually ramped up with a new production facility and in a new hall. The ground-breaking ceremony for this is scheduled for autumn 2023. Around 100,000 batteries per year can then be manufactured in large-scale production - it is the basis for the industrialisation of electric drives at MAN. Around 15,000 to 25,000 eTrucks could be equipped with them -

depending on the configuration.

“The transformation ahead of us is a major challenge that can only succeed if companies work together with works councils, trade unions and politicians. From this perspective, it is a good sign for the Nuremberg

metropolitan region and the Free State of Bavaria that battery series production is being supported here at the MAN plant in Nuremberg,” says Markus Wansch, MAN Works Council Chairman Nuremberg and Deputy Chairman of the General and Group Works Council.

“If the ramp-up of eMobility in the truck sector takes place as we assume, the production capacity currently planned will no longer be sufficient at the end of this decade.

In 2030, around 50 percent of all newly registered MAN trucks in Europe should be batteryelectric - that would be around 40,000 units. That is why we are already starting to think about further expansion stages,” Vlaskamp notes.

talks bringing its new S-Way into a booming Saudi Arabian fleet and transport market

After a regional launch in Dubai in 2021, IVECO and the Arabian Auto Agency have unwrapped the S-Way heavy range to the Saudi market. Thanks to AAA’s network, with four main branches and more than 10 regional parts outlets, the Saudi market represents one of the most strategically importrant markets for IVECO in terms of investment, presence and customer value.

March’s launch event brought together more than 250 customers and represented a chance to showcase the new functionalities of a range which has been completely built around the driver, with particular attention to productivity, safety and a completely renewed and redesigned cabin, to improve the on board comfort and vehicle performance. The S-Way vehicles will be locally assembled by Zeemat

Manufacturing (ZMT), the authorized assembly factory for IVECO trucks in Riyadh, wholly owned subsidiary of AAA. All the equipment produced by ZMT is highly engineered and in many cases is unique to the end user. ZMT management works in close harmony with

The AAA sales team in the preparation of technical bids and with the end customer technical personnel said it will ensure the specified product meets or exceeds the end-users’ requirements in terms of specification, performance and delivery.

“Every detail of the new IVECO Way Range has been developed in order to optimise the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) specially fuel consumption, maintenance and uptime costs and productivity,” says Shahram Falati, IVECO Africa & Middle East business director. “These are giving us great reviews and satisfied customers worldwide. With the introduction

of the new IVECO Way Range in Saudi Arabia, where some models will be produced locally, we plan to further consolidate and increase our presence in this important Market, thanks to our ever-growing collaboration with our partner Arabian Auto Agency.”

Alberto Pellegrini, IVECO Saudi Arabia’s area manager, says that that Saudi Arabian marketplace is: “Definitely one of the most competitive and developed in the region with an important Key Account sector, very competent and highly demanding in terms of TCO and After Sales Support. This said with the launch of the new IVECO S-Way and IVECO T-Way, we now offer our customers an entirely renewed and business-oriented product range for both on and off-road missions, be they the most popular and challenging long haulage distribution or the tough construction one with its tipper and mixer applications.”

According

general

of Arabian Auto Agency, the rapid growth of the Saudi economy on the path to the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, means that AAA must be committed to delivering the best service to the Saudi market.

The new design of the door, which extends all the Way range down to the second step, creates a smooth surface on the sides of the cab, reducing turbulence at cruising speed.

“The launch of the IVECO S-Way came at a very critical time in our region, where we are targeting a double-digit market share from 2023. I believe that IVECO’s new heavy range will take the best place among the main players in this market, but with the great team we have built in the last 3 years and the continuous support from the Iveco team, we believe and we will make it.”

A driver-centric long-haul truck

The IVECO S-Way builds on the success this range has achieved since its European launch in 2019 and has proved extremely popular with drivers for its high levels of comfort. Customers appreciate the improvements in performance and in Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) that come with high reliability of new truck.

In the face of fierce competition, logistics operators need top-level uptime, efficiency and productivity from their fleets. The S-Way meets this requirement, providing a complete package of features without equal, developed with focus on driver centricity. It is more than a product: it offers a business model that covers the vehicle’s entire life cycle and helps IVECO’s customers to meet their own customers’ requirements.

In redesigning the cab from the ground up, IVECO has taken every opportunity to deliver cost savings and productivity gains to the benefit of the owner’s profitability. All the elements of the new design work together to achieve a superior aerodynamic performance and deliver fuel savings up to 4% on top of the outstanding fuel efficiency that is the hallmark of this product family.

Every detail of the cab exterior has been studied with care to minimise air resistance, says IVECO. The new roof is integrated into the front end of the vehicle, presenting a flat surface that minimises drag. Even the retractable front step that provides easy access to the windshield completely disappears when not in use. The front grille with high radius corners and side fins, the integrated headlights, the new bumpers design with integrated deflectors, together with the wheel arches, create flowing lines that optimise air flow. The vehicle’s aerodynamic performance is further enhanced by additional features that reduce drag by closing gaps. They include the optimised aerodynamic kit with rubber extensions to close up the space between tractor and semi-trailer.

A new cab designed around the driver to provide superior driving comfort on board and the IVECO S-Way carries over all the advances introduced in the previous generations and adds a new cab entirely redesigned around the driver to provide the ultimate driving environment with outstanding ergonomics and controls layout.

The ergonomic layout of the controls ensures all the key functions are within easy reach of the driver. The multi-functional steering wheel, with 22 switches, puts all the necessary functions at the driver’s fingertips. This set-up eliminates distractions for the driver who can operate without ever needing to move his hands from the steering wheel.

The dashboard and central stack have been redesigned to improve operating comfort and efficiency with a new layout and greatly increased functionalities. The new Start/Stop engine button and the slot for the electronic key with integrated remote control are conveniently placed on the dashboard near the DNR area. The

redesigned roof, lower tunnel and shaped upper shelf provide a comfortable standing height of 2.15 metres in the centre of the cabin, while the upper longitudinal usable space is 35 cm wider than in the previous model, providing easier access to the upper bed and compartments.

The night area combines functionality and comfort with its new symmetrical layout and wellplaced storage, USB connections and controls. The air conditioning system, and integrated parking cooler and heater systems ensure an ideal internal climate within the cab in all weather conditions, when driving or during stops.

Designed for driver safety

According to the Italian brand, the S-Way has been developed with a strong focus on the driver, and the new cab has been redesigned and reinforced to ensure high levels of passive safety, with mechanical resistance compliant with ECE R29.03 cab crash standards.

Its new design also provides much improved direct visibility for the driver with the onepiece side windows and rear-view mirrors. It features a complete array of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems to help the driver operate the vehicle efficiently and safely while reducing fatigue on the road. The cab also addresses security when the vehicle is parked with the new design of the door which now extends all the Way down, leaving only the bottom step exposed, and includes an additional mechanical door lock inside the cab.

The renewed line-up has been designed for high business productivity to deliver on its claims as a TCO performer. The new engine line-up meets Euro III/ V emissions standards. The Cursor 9 and 13 engines provide a wide range of power ratings starting from 360 hp to 560/570 hp. The engine efficiency has been improved with introduction of Common Rail injection system.

The 9 and 13-litre engines have been coupled with new, high-efficiency Hi-Tronix 12 speeds automated gearbox which enables substantial improvement in electronic clutch control, resulting in greater efficiency, enhanced durability and better performances.

Additional features contribute to the IVECO S-Way’s fuel economy. They include the new Ecoroll function which automatically disengages driveline in smooth slope to exploit vehicle inertia, Ecoswitch which optimises engine power/torque output according to vehicle load and mission, and Tyre Pressure Monitoring system to keep under control the pressure of each tyre for increased safety and fuel efficiency.

MAMMOET INTRODUCES LOW EMISSION SPMT OPTION

TRAILERS

Mammoet has begun offering a zero emission option for its SPMT transport service. The self-propelled option is compatible with any trailer in its fleet, it has added in a statement.

This development has been made possible through a conversion process for SPMT power pack units (PPUs), which replaces the diesel powertrain inside existing trailers with an electric alternative. Once retrofitted, each trailer combination has comparable power to existing industry standard units, says Mammoet.

“The PPU vastly reduces noise levels at project sites, resulting in a safer and more productive work environment for our customers and colleagues. Communication between staff is clearer, while at locations where sound restrictions are in place longer operational windows are now possible,” it added.

“The system represents another step towards zero emission on site, eliminating the carbon footprint of SPMT transport entirely. This allows our customers to meet increasingly strict environmental legislation more easily, reducing the impact of transport phases on surrounding communities and infrastructure.

“It also demonstrates Mammoet’s strong commitment to the energy transition, and to its own sustainability. Retro-fitting existing SPMT fleets cuts down on both waste and additional fabrication, compared to sourcing new zero emission equipment.”

This solution was part-financed by the DKTI, a Dutch government program to develop climate technologies and innovations in logistics. Mammoet worked with a leading provider of zero-emissions powertrains for heavy industry to bring the electric power pack solution to market.

Juffali Commercial Vehicles (JCB), a leading provider of logistics solutions, has come up with an innovative offer mobile shop solution that can assist companies and fleet operators who face challenges with their location at our regular sites in major cities. Its idea is to eliminate the obstacle by offering a Mobile Parts store. This would alleviate the burden on companies in smaller areas and lessen the demand for larger stores in the main cities. Its branded 20- or 40ft container includes a parts stock portfolio negotiated with the client. It’s pay-per-use, with weekly/monthly counts. JCV can offer return pick-up and features like a ramp, power cable connector, and a hook-up system. It also offers a smaller version of the 20/40ft container option, the

Mobile Parts Van solution. These options come with shelves and lights, providing ample space for storing goods and equipment. The best part is that these are available at no cost to Juffali Commercial Vehicles fleet operators, making it a cost-effective solution for businesses of all sizes. It currently has a network that covers the most remote city areas, including Riyadh, Jeddah, Mecca/ Medina, and Dammam. However, smaller businesses in rural areas need help finding carriers for their fleets and often must travel long distances to urban areas. To address this issue, JCV plans to implement a dual strategy by opening an e-commerce shop and launching a “Mobile Parts Shop” covering the South, North, and parts of the East of KSA.

CHINA

ON THE RISE

Anew report by Glasgow Consulting and Research’s Vishal Pandey has highlighted how Chinese manufacturers have invested heavily in expanding and diversifying their product portfolios to gain a stronger foothold in the UAE car market. In it he explores the dynamic Chinese OEMS in the UAE car market and sheds light on the factors that are contributing to its successes in the market.

As covered by T&FME, the UAE market has recently seen a series of partnership announcements between Chinese brands and local distributors such as the Geely-

powered Admiral Mobility e-truck debuting at Mobility Live in Abu Dhabi, as well as the Volvo Car owners partnering with AGMC in the UAE. Within days of that announcement, fellow dragon and EV player BYD revealed it was entering the market via Al Futtaim Electric Mobility Company.

Arguably, the new wave of Chinese brands are determined to set straight the record when it comes to the criticism traditionally fired their way. As T&FME editor Stephen White noted last month, the designs are sharpers, the technology on offer at the cutting edge and at prices far below other brands.

Much of the focus is now on proving

that Chinese car and truck companies can offer services and aftersales support that was lacking in the past, particularly in the provision of spare parts. Ultimately, while the brands still focus on price competitiveness, ramping up the customer experience is an attempt to protect residual values as well as generate long-term loyalty.

According to Pandey, the Chinese manufacturers also want to prove they can be truly local in their approach in areas such as establishing manufacturing facilities and after-sales service centers. This he argues not only strengthens their “presence and builds customer trust” but also offers a genuine alternative in the rental and leasing space.

“The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a country known for its opulence, luxury, and a thriving economy. With its vast oil reserves and progressive vision, the UAE has experienced unprecedented growth in various sectors,” says Glasgow Research & Consulting’s expert.

“Among them, the automotive industry has witnessed remarkable development, transforming the country into a hub for car enthusiasts and manufacturers.”

Fundamentally, the UAE remains a market that enjoys relative economic prosperity and high disposable income among its vehicle buyers.

“The UAE’s flourishing economy plays a pivotal role in the growth of its car market. With a high GDP per capita and a prosperous business environment, the UAE residents enjoy significant purchasing powerm,” notes Pandey. “This economic prosperity has led to an increased demand for vehicles, especially luxury cars and SUVs. The country’s affluent population seeks vehicles that epitomise comfort, style, and the latest technological advancements.”

Traditionally, Chinese brands have struggled to establish themselves in markets with this type of economic background, and yet demand for Chinese models in the UAE has been on the rise.

“Within a short three years, Chinese OEMs have gained a strong foothold in the UAE car market,” says Pandey.

In some ways the improving quality and performance from China is being met by a wave of changing buying habits in the market. More than ever, consumers are looking for vehicles that offer competitive pricing and value for money.

“By offering competitive pricing and excellent value for money. The affordability of Chinese vehicles has appealed to a wide range of consumers, particularly those seeking reliable transportation at an affordable price point. Chinese OEMs have strategically positioned themselves as a cost-effective alternative to established brands, attracting budgetconscious buyers,” says Pandey.

Changing Chinese OEM fortunes

Chinese market share in the UAE car market grew from 3.5% to 5.1% between Q4 2021 and Q4 2022 with this increased market share taken from most of the major global competition with the exception of manufacturers from the US.

CHINESE MARKET SHARE IN THE UAE CAR MARKET

Pandey feels that Chinese companies now offer a tempting and diverse product portfolio for buyers.

“Chinese manufacturers have invested heavily in expanding and diversifying their product portfolios. They now offer a wide range of vehicles, including sedans, SUVs, crossovers, and electric models. This diverse lineup allows Chinese OEMs to cater to different customer preferences and market segments, providing options for both individual buyers and fleet owners,” he says, adding that this approach has been bolstered by improved quality and technology.

“Chinese OEMs have made significant strides in improving the quality and technology of their vehicles,” he continues. “They have focused on enhancing reliability, safety features, and overall build quality to match the standards set by international competitors. By incorporating advanced technology and innovative features, such as touch-screen infotainment systems, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), and connectivity options, Chinese OEMs have been able to offer appealing options to tech-savvy consumers in the UAE.”

BY entering into strategic partnerships and collaborations such as Geely and AGMC and BYD with Al Futtaim, Chinese OEMs are gaining a stronger foothold in the UAE car market than ever before.

“By teaming up with local distributors and dealerships, they have leveraged their partners’ expertise and networks to effectively market and distribute their vehicles. Additionally, Chinese OEMs have focused on localisation efforts, such as establishing manufacturing facilities and after-sales service centers, to strengthen their presence and build customer trust.”

Pandey also argues that the focus on Electric Vehicles (EVs) and the UAE government’s emphasis on sustainability and environmental conservation has created a favorable environment for Chines-made EVs.

“Chinese manufacturers have capitalised on this opportunity by introducing affordable electric models with competitive performance and range. Their ability to offer reliable and cost-effective EVs has positioned them as key players in the UAE’s transition towards a greener future,” he says.

EVs may represent the near-future, but for now the investment in after-sales support and Warranty Programs should pay-off.

“Chinese OEMs have made significant efforts to improve their after-sales support and warranty programs, addressing concerns about maintenance and spare parts availability. By partnering with reputable service providers and offering competitive warranty packages, they have gained the trust of consumers and helped overcome previous reservations about owning Chinese vehicles,” says Pandey.

“The Chinese OEMs’ growth in the UAE car market is a testament to their competitive pricing, improved quality, diverse product offerings, and strategic partnerships. As they continue to invest in research and development, technology innovation, and local manufacturing facilities, Chinese manufacturers are poised to further expand their market share.

He concludes: “With a strong focus on affordability, electric vehicles, and customer satisfaction, Chinese OEMs are reshaping the UAE car market and providing consumers with more choices than ever before.”

TAKING FLIGHT

IN KSA

For a while, it seemed like Saudi Arabia was content to follow the latest trends in building its transport networks. Like its GCC peers it has poured money into metros and building its bus fleets, but avoided some of the wilder concepts for getting people from A to B but the advent of the Saudi Vision 2030 programme has encouraged planners of its more ambitious projects to look at more cutting edge ideas.

Early this summer NEOM, the megadevelopment in the north of the Kingdom begun a series of air taxi test flights using UAM pioneer Volocopter’s VoloCity. With the pilot programme showing real promise,

for the first time an eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft has received a special flight authorisation and performed test flights in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The flight test campaign lasted over a week and built on 18 months of collaboration between NEOM, the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA), and Volocopter, “with the aim of implementing and scaling an electric UAM ecosystem and testbed in NEOM. The parties worked closely to ensure full regulatory compliance and safety ahead of the test campaign.”

Daniel MacGregor, chief growth officer at Serco Middle East, describes the test programme as highlighting “the major progress

that is being made in the development of Urban Air Mobility (UAM). The recent test flights of eVTOL aircraft in NEOM are a big milestone, and they show that UAM is on the cusp of becoming a reality.

He adds: “I believe that UAM has the potential to revolutionise transportation, making it faster, more efficient, and more sustainable. eVTOL aircraft are noiseless and emissions-free, making them ideal for urban environments. They can also take off and land vertically, which means that they do not need runways, freeing up valuable space in cities. As the technology continues to develop, UAM is likely to become increasingly popular. It has the potential to

transform the way we travel, and it could have a major impact on the future of cities.

Serco was recently awarded the mobility services contract for Red Sea Global where it will oversee the high profile Saudi tourist destination’s zero-emissions transport services.

“Serco Middle East has been has been operating in the air transportation sector since 1947 and is ready to support our clients in making UAM a reality. We are committed to developing and managing the air traffic management systems that will be needed to safely and efficiently integrate UAM into the existing airspace. We are also working to develop the training programmes that will be needed to integrate UAM with traditional air transportation.

“NEOM’s recent achievement in successfully completing a series of air taxi test flights is a significant step forward for the development of UAM in the region. This is the first time that an eVTOL aircraft has received a special flight authorisation and performed test flights in Saudi Arabia.

“This is a major step forward, and it shows that NEOM is committed to leading the way in the development of UAM. We congratulate NEOM on their achievement, and we look forward to working with them to further develop UAM in the region. We believe that UAM has the potential to make a real difference in the way people travel, and we are committed to helping make it a reality.”

The test campaign focused on the flight performance of the Volocopter aircraft in local climate and environmental conditions, as well as testing its integration into the local unmanned aircraft system traffic management (UTM) system.

Volocopter eVTOLs will be key to NEOM’s smart and sustainable multimodal mobility system, which will be powered by 100% renewable energy generated by solar and wind energy sources. They will be used in a variety of roles, including as air taxis and emergency response vehicles, and are quieter, more easily adaptable, and cheaper to operate than the helicopters often employed today. They have a smaller on-ground infrastructure footprint, fewer operating restrictions, and employ smart and autonomous capabilities that ensure both safety and sustained relevance in future contexts.

Nadhmi Al-Nasr— CEO of NEOM says that the successful test flight of the VoloCity eVTOL is not just another milestone on the journey towards the creation of NEOM’s innovative, sustainable, multimodal

transportation system – “it is a tangible example of NEOM as a global accelerator and incubator of solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges. Driving the development of smart, sustainable, and safe mobility systems will improve livability and connectivity in cities around the world and reduce carbon emissions, creating a cleaner future.” for all.”

Al-Nasr’s thoughts are echoed by His Excellency, Abdulaziz A. Al-Duailej— president of the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

“This safe and successful test flight represents an important milestone of the Saudi aviation sector and another steady step towards achieving the aviation sector’s strategy, through innovation and employing emerging technologies to create new

industries that contribute to the output GDP and create more jobs,” says Al-Duailej.

“It also confirms GACA’s commitment to enabling the safe integration of innovative air transport patterns that improve the mobility experience of individuals in urban areas and the quality of life in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

According to Al-Duailej, NEOM and Volocopter share a joint vision of creating a better future through innovative, clean technology.

“As part of a multimodal transportation system, electric air mobility reflects NEOM’s ambition to revolutionize mobility and transform people’s lives. In 2021, NEOM and Volocopter founded a joint venture to scale advanced air mobility, positioning NEOM as a collaborative, global living lab for the future of transportation.”

The test flight announcement builds on NEOM’s EUR 175 million investment and joint venture with Volocopter and positions NEOM as a leader in future mobility solutions. Volocopter expects to obtain type certification for its VoloCity air taxi in 2024, enabling future commercial operations. Volocopter recently announced the commencement of VoloCity serial production at its facilities in Bruchsal, Germany, with a capacity to deliver more than 50 aircraft a year.

Christian Bauer— chief commercial officer and chief financial officer of Volocopter describes the first eVTOL aircraft to ever test in Saudi Arabia as “beyond exciting”.

“We are proud to have lain the groundwork for our future collaboration here in NEOM, he added. “The test campaign focused on the flight performance of the Volocopter aircraft in local climate and environmental conditions, as well as testing its integration into the local unmanned aircraft system traffic management (UTM) system.”

Featuring two seats, 18 rotors, the VoloCity air taxi is an all-electric aircraft with the ability to vertically take off and land. Back in 2011, Volocopter was the first to build and fly an initial prototype of this brand-new aircraft type. Developed to meet the exacting aviation standards and requirements set by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), the VoloCity air taxi has been put to test in over 1,500 test flights already, in multiple prototype iterations. Initial flights are piloted (1 pilot plus 1 passenger), eventually paving the way toward a fully autonomous service in the future.

According to the German manufacturer, the VoloCity air taxi will bypass urban streets to fly whisperquiet and emission-free in the lower airspace: “It is poised to transport passengers between key transportation hubs like train stations and airports. This will enable seamless, faster, and more convenient options than those afforded by existing transit options. The VoloCity is more than our first launch product –it’s a veritable game changer. With its clean design and advanced architecture, and the way it integrates technologies, it will go some way toward making big city life more convenient and more sustainable.”

ROLLING INTO IRAQ

DP World opens new UAE and Iraq freight service using specialist RORO vehicles

DP World has launched the first direct freight service between the UAE and Iraq. Said to make the flow of goods between the two countries faster, safer and more efficient, the service uses specially designed “unaccompanied trailers” for roll-on, roll-off (RORO) operations.

Towing the trailers, the vehicles can be transported by sea without the driver and truck cab travelling alongside them. Instead, the trailer is left at the quay side at the port by the driver and is then pulled on and off the ship alone.

This is the first service of its kind in the UAE and runs under the name of P&O Maritime Transports, said DP World company.

The service takes approximately 36 hours to travel between Jebel Ali Port in the UAE and Umm Qasr Port in southern Iraq. It offers a new route between the two countries for road trailers, alleviating challenges faced by customers using cross-border land transport, which can take up to 14 days.

NEXT

Unaccompanied trailers are loaded on to ORO) freight vessels, leaving the driver and cab behind at the port. Once the trailer reaches Umm Qasr Port, an Iraqi truck can drive it to its final destination anywhere in the country. Once delivered, the empty trailer is then returned to Umm Qasr and shipped by to Jebel Ali.

Until now, goods transported by road from the UAE to Iraq must be transloaded – a time consuming exercise of transferring cargo from the original truck to a locally-licensed vehicle. It is also risky, exposing the cargo in terms of damage, contamination and security.

DP World’s unaccompanied trailer service allows cargo owners and logistics companies to load a UAE-plated trailer in their local warehouse, ship it securely to Iraq and get the same trailer back, without the cargo having to change hands along the route.

This is especially useful for transporting palletised or project cargo – large, heavy duty, or complex pieces of equipment, due to the greater payload capacity of road going trailers. Purposebuilt RORO freight vessels allow customers greater flexibility in the planning and movement

of over-dimensional packages on low-bed and heavy-axle trailers. This generates significant cost savings versus traditional break bulk operations, as the cargo loaded on board a trailer is available to be delivered directly on site in Iraq.

“The launch of this new route is a step change in our service offering in the UAE. It is a great example of our customer-focused approach at DP World, using innovative and tailored solutions to enable the flow of goods,” said Jesper Kristensen, Group Chief Operating Officer, DP World Marine Services.

“Iraq’s economy is growing rapidly, but until now it relied on transit through its neighbours for its import and export needs. Our new direct service starts to address this, opening a new more efficient trade route for the country.

“On top of the time and efficiency benefits, our service will also offer significant sustainability benefits. By shipping the trailer alone to Iraq, we expect to remove thousands of trucks from the roads every year, helping our clients reduce their CO2 emissions,” he added.
