WE ARE NOT OUT OF THE WOODS YET

EDITOR

I’m sure many of you would have been dismayed by the news of yet more upheaval in the north of the region this month. It is too early to second guess what turmoil this will cause, but already I am aware that industry events even in Saudi have been forced to postpone as we digest the ramifications. Supply chains are also like to be more challenging in the weeks ahead too. I really don’t have enough space in the column to talk about the events in detail, so instead I think now would be a good time to evaluate the major forces at play as 2023 draws to a close in the industry. The latest disruption of course comes at a time when we may have dared to think the worries of Covid and the global downturn it exasperated were behind us. Our news sites and screens are reminder that we are not out of the woods yet. In recent years, the industry has experienced significant disruption, brought about by a combination of internal and external factors. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in the global supply chain, affecting the availability of construction machinery parts and components. Companies in the Middle East experienced delays and increased costs due to supply chain disruptions. As a consequence, developing a resilient supply chain and exploring local manufacturing options are essential for navigating these disruptions - and look more challenging as we enter 2024. Economic challenges, such as fluctuating oil prices and the geopolitical tensions, have affected government budgets and construction projects in the Middle

SALES MANAGER

East. These factors can lead to delayed or canceled construction projects, impacting the demand for construction machinery. Industry players must adapt by diversifying their portfolios and exploring new markets. But there is hope that the rapid advancement of technology could finally deliver the promises of the last decade. This includes the integration of IoT, telematics, and autonomous machinery. These technologies have improved efficiency, reduced downtime, and enhanced safety on construction sites. More than ever, companies that fail to adopt and adapt to these innovations risk losing market share and competitiveness. The technology is also expanding options in rental inventories, including more electric and hybrid options than ever before. You would hope that the drive for sustainability that these could support should also come more focused after the COP28 meeting - at least at a local UAE level. We’ve already seen chanfges to material transportation rules - and there could yet be more to come such as stricter rules on equipment and vehicle ages. Thankfully, like digitalisation, these seem mucn more in our control.

Gargash and LiuGong seal distribution deal Dubai-based Gargash General Trading has announced a pivotal distribution agreement with Liu-Gong Machinery, heralding the start of a robust strategic partnership aimed at strengthening its position within the heavy equipment sector. At a grand signing ceremony on October 9th, both Gargash General Trading and LiuGong Machinery commemorated this new alliance, emphasising the prospective advancements and innovations it will bring to the industry. The deal comes almost 12 months after the UAE firm secured a distribution deal with Korean concrete pump specialist KCP. LiuGong Machinery, a titan in the machinery world, boasts an illustrious history of 65 years. Founded in 1958, the company set the pace for modern machinery in China when it introduced the country’s first modernized wheel loader in 1966. Over the decades, LiuGong has ascended the ranks to become a world-class enterprise, now offering over 30 product lines

that cater to all primary applications within the engineering industry. In 2002, LiuGong unveiled its visionary globalization strategy. The fruits of this strategy are evident today, with the company having established over 30 overseas subsidiaries and offices, four international manufacturing facilities, and five R&D bases around the globe. Their expansive network of more than 300 dealers ensures that LiuGong’s cutting-edge products and impeccable services reach customers in over 170 countries and regions. Driven by its ambition to mold itself into a globally competitive world-class enterprise, LiuGong remains unwavering in its commitment. The company is set on expanding its global footprint by vigorously advancing its “Total Globalization, Total Solution, and Total Intelligence” strategy. This commitment aligns seamlessly with the new partnership with Gargash General Trading, promising a brighter future for the heavy equipment industry.

The units were sold and delivered by JLG’s distributor for Saudi Arabia, Cat rental store – Ejar.

MYCRANE, the prominent online crane rental platform, has strengthened its footprint in the Middle East by initiating its operations in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This strategic move comes on the heels of MYCRANE’s successful Series A funding round. The launch of MYCRANE’s Saudi Arabia operations was announced at the esteemed oil and gas exhibition, ADIPEC. This expansion aligns with MYCRANE’s continuous growth strategy as a technology platform based in Dubai, catering to a diverse array of industries and sectors seeking efficient and swift crane rental solutions, with a capacity of up to 750 tonnes. Andrei Geikalo, Founder and CEO of MYCRANE, highlighted the significance of this expansion into Saudi Arabia, stating, “Saudi Arabia’s 2030 vision and diversification strategy will be a boost to so many different sectors, so our launch in Saudi Arabia was a natural step. We see no shortage of opportunities, particularly as Saudi Arabia has already committed to almost $1 trillion worth of construction and infrastructure projects, and announced plans to become a global logistics hub.” The responsibility for MYCRANE’s Saudi Arabia operations falls under the capable leadership of Piet Kraaijeveld, the company’s Chief Operating Officer. Kraaijeveld brings a wealth of experience in the Gulf region, having worked in the United Arab Emirates for several years, including roles at Mammoet as Sales Manager for the Middle East and Africa, and as a Strategic Account Manager for Ritchie Bros., the world’s largest industrial auctioneer. Kraaijeveld’s initial focus will revolve around onboarding customers onto the platform, facilitating collaborations between Saudi asset owners and MYCRANE for crane registration.

CEMEX: NEW FACILITY SHOWS COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY

A recycling facility designed to process construction, demolition and excavation waste has been opened by Cemex in Tel Aviv, Israel. The firm said the facility highlights its commitment to cir-cularity and sustainability under the banner of its Regenera business. The primary suppliers for the Tel Aviv facility are expected to be companies involved in the demolition of existing structures, and those specialising in the transportation of construction waste. Customers for the recycled materials in Israel, include concrete companies, flooring contractors and infrastructure firms. The facility, acquired earlier this year as part of Cemex’s purchase of a controlling 51% stake in Israel-based Shtang Recycle, will receive up to 500,000 tonnes of building waste annually. The waste material will undergo advanced processing techniques, to be largely repurposed as recycled building materials, the firm explained.

aimondi Middle East has set up four MRT111 flat-top tower cranes at the Jumeirah Village Circle, a burgeoning master community in Dubai. Erected in May, these cranes are actively contributing to the construction of a prominent fivestorey residential structure. Wael Hasan, Commercial Director at Raimondi Middle East, spoke on the significance of this deployment, “The United Arab Emirates is currently experiencing a remarkable boom in its construction realm, spanning infrastructural,

residential, and mixed-use projects. “Our rental of the four flat-tops aligns seamlessly with Raimondi’s ongoing commitment to pivotal projects throughout the nation.” He further highlighted that, “At present, we have over 30 machinery units operating in the UAE, and we anticipate this number to rise in the forthcoming months.” A closer look at the specifications of the MRT111s reveals their towering presence, with heights oscillating between 33m and 48m. Their jib lengths are pegged at 42m and 36m respectively. Each machine, equipped with the cutting-edge

Raimondi C ra n e s is strengthening its foothold in the Gulf Cooperation Council, with an impressive array of their models making their mark, especially in Qatar and the UAE. Concluding his remarks, Hasan expressed optimism about the future, “We are on track to conclude 2023 with roughly 20 additional cranes operational in the region.”

CMME GETS A TASTE OF THE AUCTION BUZZ AS EURO AUCTIONS HOLDS ITS LATEST SALE IN ABU DHABI

I

n the world of buying and selling heavy machinery and equipment, physical auctions hold a special place. These events bring together buyers, sellers, and machinery enthusiasts for an experience that combines the thrill of a live auction with the opportunity to acquire valuable assets. Let’s delve into the world of physical machinery auctions and explore why they continue to thrive in the digital age. One of the most significant attractions of physical machinery auctions is the atmosphere. These events are often held in large auction yards or venues, creating a buzz of excitement as bidders gather to compete for a range of machinery, from construction equipment to agricultural machinery and industrial tools. The auctioneer’s chant resonates through the crowd, creating a palpable sense of anticipation. Buyers raise their bid cards or signal their offers with a nod, engaging in a lively and competi-tive bidding process. It’s an experience that evokes the essence of traditional auction culture, where quick decisions and strategic bidding can lead to a successful acquisition. One distinct advantage of physical machinery auctions is the opportunity to inspect the equipment up close. Buyers can examine the machinery’s condition, operation, and overall quality before placing their bids. This hands-on approach allows for a more informed decisionmaking process, reducing the risk associated with purchasing sight-unseen. Inspecting the machinery also provides buyers with insights into any necessary repairs or maintenance, which can be factored into their bidding strategy. It’s a level of transparency that helps both seasoned

professionals and newcomers to the industry. Physical machinery auctions often feature a diverse range of equipment. It’s not uncommon to find rare or specialised machinery that may not be readily available through other channels. This variety can attract collectors, enthusiasts, and professionals seeking unique pieces for their businesses. From vintage tractors to state-of-the-art construction equipment, physical auctions offer a treasure trove of options. This diversity contributes to the excitement of attending these events, as buyers never quite know what they might discover. Beyond the machinery itself, physical auctions provide valuable networking opportunities. Attendees can connect with industry peers, exchange insights, and build relationships that may lead to future collaborations or partnerships. These interactions can be as valuable as the equipment being auctioned. Experienced auctioneers are a crucial component of physical machinery auctions. Their knowledge of the industry, the equipment, and the bidding process helps facilitate smooth and fair transactions. Auctioneers can provide insights into the machinery’s history, condition, and value, assisting both buyers and sellers in making informed decisions. While physical machinery auctions maintain their traditional charm, they have also embraced digital technology. Many auction houses now offer online bidding options, allowing remote participants to join the action. This integration of digital platforms expands the reach of physical auctions and broadens their appeal to a global audience. Physical machinery auctions offer a unique blend of tradition and modernity. They provide a thrilling, hands-on experience for buyers

13 and sellers, showcasing a wide variety of equipment and fostering valuable connections within the industry. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or an enthusiast, attending a physical machinery auction can be an exciting and rewarding venture. Last month, Euro Auctions, the premier auctioneer for construction machinery in Europe, recently hosted its second live, unreserved auction sale at the new permanent auction house in Abu Dhabi, and the results were nothing short of impressive. With over 700 lots up for auction and more than 60 vendors participating, the event showcased the robust demand for heavy construction machinery and commercial vehicles in the Middle East. The auction witnessed a significant turnout, with both in-person and online participation. An impressive 63% of sales occurred through floor bidders, demonstrating a strong preference for physical auctions. Additionally, 36% of total sales were conducted online, highlighting the evolving landscape of auction platforms. Euro Auctions has emerged as the sole live auction provider in the Middle East, solidifying its reputation as a trusted and preferred platform for buying and selling heavy machinery. The majority of consignors (75%) were from the United Arab Emirates, but the auction also attracted vendors from the United Kingdom, Kuwait, the Seychelles, and Sri Lanka. When compared to the inaugural sale at the Abu Dhabi site earlier in the year, the statistics show remarkable growth: the number of consignors increased by 45%, the number of bidders surged by 50%, the number of lots sold went up by 15%, and the average lot value increased by 16%. Notably, 45% of bidders were first-time registrants, underlining the auction’s expanding appeal. The auction drew a truly international audience, with bidders hailing from the UAE, UK, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon, Romania, the Netherlands, Germany, Turkey, and India. The top buying countries by percentage of total hammer sales included the UAE (69%), Saudi Arabia (7.4%), Iraq (5.9%), Libya (6.5%), Uganda (4.1%), the UK (3.6%), and Qatar (2.3%). Richard Sweatt, General Manager for the Middle East and Asia at Euro Auctions, expressed his satisfaction with the event’s success. He emphasised the importance of the physical auction experience, where customers can inspect machinery firsthand, network with industry peers, and witness the auction action. In a market where competitors are shifting to online sales, Euro Auctions remains committed to providing a personalised and comprehensive auction experience. Sweatt also highlighted the advantages of Euro Auctions’ new sale site in the Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi (KEZAD), where

part of the yard is licensed as a ‘customs bonded warehouse.’ This simplifies equipment delivery and collection for UAE customers and enhances their ability to inspect stock before auction day. Future Plans Euro Auctions has ambitious plans for growth in the region, aiming to become the number one auctioneer in the Middle East. With ample yard space, the company intends to offer a wide range of services

related to the sale of industrial plant, construction, and agricultural machinery, including transportation and minor repairs. The construction industry in the region continues to flourish, with high demand for late-model big excavators, motor graders, single drum vibratory rollers, bulldozers, and clean machines with low hours. The September auction’s outstanding results have fueled the determination of Euro Auctions’ Territory Managers to make the December event even more significant.

Euro Auctions has emerged as the sole live auction provider in the Middle East, solidifying its importance as a platform for buying and selling heavy machinery.

As the leading construction machinery auction specialist in Europe and with operations world-wide, Euro Auctions operates three of the most significant auction sites in the EMEA region: Europe’s largest in Leeds, UK, Dormagen, Germany, and now Abu Dhabi, the largest sale site in the Middle East. Euro Auctions’ commitment to delivering top-notch services and connecting buyers and sellers in the heavy machinery industry continues to drive its success and growth on a global scale.

A NEW SUN RISES IN THE EAST

THE DOOSAN LEGACY LIVES ON, AS DEVELON BRINGS ITS GLOBAL CUSTOMER BASE TO ITS BORYEONG HOME IN SOUTH KOREA

T

he rebranding of Doosan into DEVELON at the beginning of the year was a deliberate move by Hyundai Doosan Infracore (HDI) to give its construction equipment brand a much more forward-looking identity. Two years on from HDI’s acquisition of Develon – a name which combines the words ‘Develop’ and ‘Onwards’ – HDI wants to focus on a future of innovation and its intention to change the world with innovative products and solutions. At ConExpo-Con/Agg, customers were told they were likely to begin to see newly branded machines on jobsites by the second half of the year with Cho Young-cheul, CEO of HDI, cheerily declaring that: “Our three construction equipment businesses have already solidified their status as one of the key business pillars of HD Hyundai and have built an unwavering foundation for achieving performance targets and creating synergistic effects among them, amid the rapidly changing global economic environment. “Develon will lead the future market of electrification

and automation to spur growth and continue to be a brand of choice for our customers.” That process is now well underway and last month saw HDI clinch expansive orders for the still newly branded Develon range of excavators and wheel loaders in Saudi Arabia. The order comprises a massive total of 80 units with the company delivering 30 53t excavators and 50 sizeable wheel loaders to a pair of construction corporations in Saudi Arabia. These machinery units are earmarked for deployment in the ambitious NEOM city project. Given the monumental scale of NEOM’s development, there has been a surging demand for large construction equipment in the region. Rising to the challenge, HD Hyundai Infracore has initiated strategic sales campaigns via its Dubai office, augmented with new dealership inaugurations in close proximity to NEOM city. The company has also expanded its service personnel to guarantee the delivery of these crucial orders. Demonstrating its burgeoning presence in Saudi Arabia, HD Hyundai Infracore has, with these new orders, amassed sales of 846 units spanning excavators, wheel loaders, and ADTs. This represents a whopping 51.6% growth over the 558 units sold on a year-on-year basis.

According to an HD Hyundai Infracore spokesperson: “We continue to be successful in winning orders for DEVELON products from large global construction companies,” and added, “We will use this as an opportunity to expand our market share for large equipment in other similar markets around the world.” Parallelly, HD Hyundai Infracore is executing a multifaceted marketing blueprint to magnify DEVELON’s international brand stature. This includes a blend of Out-of-home (OOH) advertisements in airports across Colombia, Ghana, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia, content dissemination on its Youtube channel boasting 100,000 subscribers, and hosting dedicated events for regional dealers and clientele. As ever, the best way to explain construction equipment and your strategy is to get people as close to the real experience as possible, and the firstever Global Develon Day event in South Korea in late September 2023 proved that the Doosan legacy lives on beneath the new branding. Bring together customers and dealers from regions including the USA, Europe, South America, and the Middle East, the three day event merged Develon’s offerings with Korean culture. It commenced with Develon Day at

BUILDING A NEW ROAD TO JEBEL AL JAIS A new road leading to Jebel Jais, the highest peak in the UAE, opened earlier this year with the promise of significantly decrease the travel time for motorists. The Public Services Department in Ras Al Khaimah said that the new 8.6-kilometer Jebel Jais road connects the Ring Road to Emirates Road through the Wadi Haqeel area, and reduces travel time by 75% in comparison to the previous route which was through Wadi Al Beeh to the point of connection in Wadi

Shiha Road. The new road takes only four minutes to travel. The Public Services Department stated that the road is fully equipped with LED lighting for a safe and secure drive for both adventurers and drivers. The construction of the road required the excavation of around 2.6 million cubic meters of rock, with depths reaching 80 meters and widths varying from 100 meters at the top to a minimum of 35 meters at the bottom. The Public Services Department

reported that 250,000 tonnes of crushed aggregate and 100,000 tonnes of asphalt were used to construct the dual carriageway. RAK is striving to enhance the experience for tourists visiting the highest summit, while also keeping up with the demands of urban growth in the emirate. It welcomed a record high of over 1.13 million overnight visitors in 2022, a 15.6% increase compared to 2021. This marks the highestever number of annual visitors to the emirate since Covid-19.

here is no escaping the fact that the European construction market is in for a hard 2024. Anaemic GDP growth, high interest rates and persistent high inflation mean that housebuilding is slowing down across the continent, and some civil engineering projects are being slowed or delayed as costs spiral. Furthermore, industry investment in new factories and facilities will likely slow too as economic output remains sluggish across much of Europe. Since the Ukraine conflict began, confidence in future orders has ebbed away across Europe. High interest rates are curbing consumer demand for housing and businesses are putting investment decisions on hold, as 2024 shapes up to be a weak year for growth. Although construction equipment companies have been able to fulfil

backorders and build up inventories at dealers, that opportunity is passing quickly and it is now increasingly clear demand for new equipment will cool across Europe in 2024. By almost any measure you could choose, both confidence and orders in the UK construction market are evaporating. In the UK, new orders are showing signs of falling across almost all construction industry sectors. New private housing, new infrastructure and new private industrial orders have all declined in recent months, falling from a high experienced after the Covid-19 pandemic. Furthermore, deliveries of bricks in the UK – a leading indicator for performance in the housing sector – have slumped to below pre-pandemic levels. As with other countries in Europe, increases in the UK’s central bank interest rate intended to tackle rampant inflation have made mortgages less affordable and put growing pressure on household finances. This has had a chilling effect on the UK

housing market, with many housebuilders pausing completions as demand for new-builds dries up. To indicate the scale of the problem, mortgage arrears have moved from a fairly stable 0.9% of total loan balances to 1.1% in the first half of 2023, with the trajectory worsening. While infrastructure projects such as HS2 have allowed the UK to maintain growth for infrastructure projects in recent years, there is evidence that spiraling materials costs are pushing the UK government to scale back and delay certain roadbuilding and infrastructure projects. This will have a negative impact on the construction equipment market, particularly the heavy-duty earthmoving sector. As with other European countries, rising interest rates are starting to put a dampener on the housing market in France. However, as can be seen from the overall construction climate index and the expected activity for non-residential buildings, the outlook is brighter with a more gradual decline and some indication that the outlook is stabilizing. There is

31 strong construction activity around the Paris Olympics in 2024 and the Grand Paris Express metro expansion. As with other European countries, Germany is grappling with high inflation and increasing interest rates. In the past two years, order books have remained strong for builders, particularly for housing. However, as can be seen from new building permit data, demand has started to slide and it is clear that the residential sector will slow in 2024 as work on current projects ends and is not replaced with new volume. Germany’s traditionally strong manufacturing economy is likely to struggle in 2024 as new orders decline through the end of 2023. Many manufacturers are already warning about lower growth through 2024 and this will be reflected in a reduction in spending on new facilities. Selling machinery in a down market is always a challenge. However, one of the major challenges for machinery fleets at the moment is dealing with inflationary cost pressures. A focus on selling machinery and products that help cut fuel costs or speed up project tasks will be warmly received and may be a key differentiator at the point of sale. Machine builders and component suppliers should not hesitate to invest in marketing and activities centered around products that can demonstrate a clear reduction in OPEX. Another way in which manufacturers and dealers may weather the worst of 2024 is to concentrate on service and maintenance sales. Machinery always needs servicing and, if end users are not upgrading their equipment, now is the perfect time to stress the importance of servicing and maintaining equipment (particularly older equipment) in order to reduce downtime and maximize the performance of existing assets. A beacon of innovation The European construction machinery manufacturing sector remains as a beacon of innovation, sustainability, and global influence in the industry. With a rich history dating back decades, Europe has consistently been at the forefront of producing state-of-the-art construction equipment that not only meets the evolving demands of the construction sector but also addresses pressing environmental concerns. European construction machinery manufacturers have earned a reputation for excellence, driven by a commitment to quality, precision engineering, and cutting-edge technology. These companies have a history of producing a diverse range of equipment, including excavators, bulldozers, loaders, cranes, and more, designed to meet the unique challenges posed by various construction projects. Innovation is the lifeblood of the European construction machinery industry. European manufacturers invest heavily in research and development to introduce groundbreaking technologies and features that enhance efficiency, safety, and sustainability. From autonomous construction equipment to telematics systems

that improve machine performance and reduce downtime, European companies are driving innovation on a global scale. One notable innovation is the integration of electric and hybrid technology into construction machinery. As sustainability takes center stage, European manufacturers have been quick to respond with eco-friendly solutions. Electric excavators, loaders, and compact equipment have emerged, offering reduced emissions and quieter operation, contributing to cleaner construction sites. Sustainability has also become a key focus for

European construction machinery manufacturers. These companies recognise their role in reducing the environmental footprint of construction projects. Efforts to improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and utilize alternative fuels are evident in their product offerings. In addition to greener equipment, manufacturers are embracing sustainable manufacturing practices. They are incorporating recycled materials into their machines, optimizing energy usage in production facilities, and implementing eco-friendly design principles to minimize waste. The impact of European construction machinery manufacturers extends far beyond the continent’s borders. These companies have a global presence, exporting their machinery to construction markets worldwide. Their commitment to quality and innovation has made European construction equipment highly sought after in regions spanning North America, Asia, Africa, and beyond. Furthermore, European manufacturers play a significant role in shaping international industry standards and regulations. They collaborate with organizations and governments to establish guidelines that prioritise safety, environmental responsibility, and the overall well-being of construction workers. While the European construction machinery manufacturing sector enjoys a strong position globally, it faces challenges such as increasing competition from emerging markets and the need to adapt to rapidly changing technological landscapes. However, these challenges also present opportunities for further growth and innovation. European manufacturers are well-positioned to lead the way in developing new technologies, expanding their sustainability efforts, and creating solutions for the construction industry’s evolving needs. They can leverage their legacy of excellence to remain competitive on the global stage.
