BEN HAMILTON

I’M SORRY in advance for any name-dropping this editorial might contain. I promise it won’t happen again. But this is the first time I can honestly say I know the person on the front cover of InOut … if you don’t include the time I shamelessly put my daughter there, or myself, or my neighbour (gay sex shops special, January 2008 best he doesn’t find out). I knew Henning Wehn (who is one of several Englishlanguage acts performing at this year’s Zulu Comedy Festival – see G2 and G8 for details) , the man whose name annoyingly switches to ‘When’ when you type it out, before he was famous, and even then he acted as if everyone should know him. We’d go to pub quizzes (he was a right Bez – absolutely hopeless) and he would get progressively louder as the night wore on, raising his hands in jubilation and cheering – which is normal behaviour when the

answers are read out, not the questions. People would say “Who’s the German bastard?” (it was Southeast London after all); now they just say “Oh, that German bastard.” But seriously, I’m sure I’m not the only copy editor in history whose red pen has involuntarily twitched at the sight of ‘German stand-up comedian’. It was only after I left Britain that he became relatively well-known. Which caused a dilemma as we continued to stay in touch. Was his lateness in replying to my emails because he was famous now? Or was it because I was now haranguing him three times a day on Yahoo chat function urging him to read my sitcom (he never did). And what if we meet again? Would the dynamic in our relationship – me cracking jokes, him trying to keep up in a foreign tongue – completely change. I might even get starstruck – so I’d best get tanked up beforehand just to make sure I don’t come across as a sycophant. I’ll cut to the bitterness straightaway: “Why didn’t you read my screenplay, you German bastard.”

Lygten Station; Lygten 2, 2400 Cph NV Tickets 110-130kr, billetlugen.dk PAUL FOOT & HENNING WEHN Thu Sep 8, 20:30; 110kr ANTHONY JESELNIK & MIKKEL RASK & JAKOB SVENDSEN Fri Sep 9, 20:30; 130kr AS PART OF the ongoing Zulu Comedy Festival, five English-speaking stand-up comics will be pushing the envelope, and your buttons, on September 8 and 9 at English Comedy Nights at Lygten Station. These guys are not mainstream guffaw types, but come from a very weird and, in a couple instances, even dark place. Of course you’ll hear funny stuff in English - that’s why you’re going, right? - but you should also know that within the genus of stand-up are several varietals, reflecting the tastes and trends of the comics’ countries of origin. The first show, on September 8, and starting at 20:30, features Britain’s Paul Foot and the Germany’s Henning Wehn, now living in England. Foot is beyond fey (and openly gay). He doesn’t take all his material from a homoerotic inspiration, although he is known for his routine on gay sperm as well as his bit on the ‘Levels of Homophobia’ – the top level being punching somebody because they are not homophobic. More quirky even than John Cleese (is this one reason why Foot is always on the brink of stardom, but never seems to get to the next stage?), he has wild rants on how one must always politely say a piece of cake is moist, how to take vengeance on an overly chatty B & B landlady, and a routine declaring that though Jesus was a success in most ways, he was definitely a failure as a carpenter. Such irony, which has occasionally gotten him booed off the stage, is not the modus operandi of German-born Henning Wehn, who has described his style as that of a typically outspoken Ruhrpott (Ruhr being the industrial area he’s from). Wehn uses slapstick and gags, as well as a confrontational approach. A sample line to his British audience “If Germans had won the war, we’d all be living in shitholes like you,” asserts that the English have ended up this way because they live beyond their means, on credit cards and taking fancy vacations, rather than the stodgy Ger-

man method of not getting something you can’t pay for. The self-appointed ‘Comic Ambassador of Germany’ is pretty convincing as he proves that the German habits of compulsive order and forced cheerfulness are actually funny, with material about the Autobahn and German punctuality, and less references to the wars that in his earlier material. He’s unthreateningly ingenuous and even ingratiating, and he often manages to win over the audience when he first appears on stage to present an act that is sometimes headlined ‘Four World Cups and One World Pope’. “I’m looking forward to it,” Wehn told InOut, who was unconcerned any of his material might stir up anti-German feelings. “We’re all Europeans. Who doesn’t understand this is a dinosaur.” Both he and Foot have showcased at the Edinburgh Fringe, proving once more that comedy can be levelling. Another brand of ‘in your face’ - or crassness if you will - is the speciality of Anthony Jeselnik, the American comic originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A former staff writer for late night TV host Jimmy Fallon, Jeselnik is known for his own one-man show

ADG Europe presents ‘Macbeth’

on Comedy Central, and was dubbed ‘One of Comedy’s Ten to Watch’ by Daily Variety. Best known for his ‘roast’ of avaricious New York City real estate developer Donald Trump, Punchline magazine once described Jeselnik as full of “well-honed, nearly sociopathic self-assured bravado”. You couldn’t argue with that. In his roast of Trump, he said Americans would be less sorry to see Trump die of cancer than Michael Douglas in Wall Street, the film about another ruthless American tycoon. Trump, who was on hand, took the attack with grace, as did the also present deaf actress Marlee Matlin and TV talk show host Larry King, who he pilloried for their respective states of being deaf, and old. Jeselnik’s ‘up yours’ comedy style will contrast sharply with Mikkel Rask’s innocent, even benevolent, satire-by-exaggeration: case in point his set piece on Ingmar Bergman. Swedish newspaper The Local calls Rask “abstract and intelligent”. While the more exuberant, occasionally hyperactive Dane, Jakob Svendsen, will test Aristotle’s assertion that “melancholy men are of all others the most witty”.

The performance includes electronic music, human sound and acrobatic dance performances. The beautiful Dutch renaissance-style venue is the perfect setting for the play, which memorably climaxes on the battlements of Macbeth’s castle. “This is theatre such as Shakespeare himself might have imagined,” commented German newspaper Donaukurier after a recent performance. Just 358 years later, in an attempt to stay as true as possible to the original version, nine opera singers will take on 24 roles between them. They populate a grotesque, raven-hued baroque universe, accompanied by a small baroque-ensemble. Acclaimed musical singer Xenia Lach-Nielsen takes the stage as Emperor Nero’s ambitious mistress Poppea. Her antagonist, Nero’s wife Octavia, is played by Swedish soprano Elisabeth Holmertz. An all-out art attack KOPENHAGEN CONTEMPORARY Various locations in Copenhagen; starts today, ends Sunday; some of the events are free; www.kopenhagen. dk/contemporary2011

A LONG WEEKEND devoted entirely to contemporary art awaits as gallery, museum and street events take over the streets. The Kopenhagen Contemporary Art Weekend, organised by Wonderful Copenhagen and the Kopenhagen Art Institute, is about showcasing the prolific local art scene. Fifty of the city’s leading galleries and institutions, from small independent art galleries to large museums, will be participating by hosting events and new exhibitions. Hundreds of artists, from Denmark and abroad, will have new projects spreading out across the city. There are several mustsee events and exhibitions. On Friday, for a great party and a one-stop destination for art, go to what the locals call ‘The Carlsberg Galleries’ at Ny Carlsberg Vej 68. Four galleries, all in a row, make it easy to absorb more art and, let’s face it, more beer without too much travel time. The galleries are: Nils Stærk, Nicolai Wallner, IMO, and BKS Garage. The galleries will be showing predominately local artists with the exception of Nicolai Wallner, which will be presenting a new piece in neon by Jonathan Monk from the UK. The art party starts at 17:00 and goes late. Another recommended stop is Overgaden Contemporary Art Centre at Neden Vandet 17 in Christianshavn. On Saturday afternoon you can drop by this popular art institution and see two exhibitions, plus attend an artist talk for free, starting at 13:00. The exhibitions are Terms of Belonging and Ahmet Cevdet Bey: Tunnel of Fear. Terms of Belonging is an inter-

Dansehallerne/Lille Carl, Pasteursvej 14-24, Cph V; starts Thu (1 Sep), ends Sat, daily performances at 19:00; tickets: adults 130kr, under-18s 60kr; www.dansehallerne.dk Three young boys, who grew up as friends, find themselves on three different roads to the future. Will they stay close and support each other, or will they be driven apart by outside influences? Where do we come from, where are we going, and how much are our lives determined by circumstances we cannot change? Is every man really the architect of his own fortune or are we mere products of our social environment? Future roads is an attempt to find answers to some of the most pressing questions of modern society. Adequate to the topic, the story is performed by three young break dancers from Freestyle Phanatix. EK

Designers are always looking for niches, although focusing on the siamese twin market was in hindsight a little over-ambitious

The two Istanbul-based artists have created a ‘chamber of horrors’ style installation about a fictional character: the unsuccessful and, almost certainly, mad scientist Ahmet Cevdet Bey. If you want more context for what is happening right now in

Flying Bach sees JS Bach’s ‘The well- tempered Clavier’ provide the music for the Flying Steps – four-time break dance world-champions – and contemporary dancer Yui Kawaguchi. There’s no real story. We watch six dancers at a rehearsal with their teacher and a ballet dancer turns up. But the performance is outstanding. language panel discussion on the theme of art and social media. Specifically, how artists are using social, digital and online tools to create artwork and to build their professional networks. For example, what kind of creative things are artists doing with Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and MySpace. This is a preview for the seminar and lunch, which immediately follows. However, the seminar does cost extra and requires pre-registration. For

200 kroner you’ll get lunch and a chance to gain more insight into the benefits and limitations of using social media in art. Finally, if your idea of art is more on the lines of ukuleles and poetry slams, head out to Frederiksberg where at Møstings Hus, Andebakkesti 5, the Late Summer Festival is taking place on Saturday and Sunday. The Late Summer Festival has displays of art and musical performances that include, yes, a ukulele and

something else, billed as ‘jazz about cannibalism’. Certainly, this promises to be an eccentric addition to the sprawling art weekend. For a complete schedule and details of the Kopenhagen Contemporary Art Weekend go to www.kopenhagen.dk/contemporary2011.

Born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, Michael’s father adopted the Anglo surname after migrating from Greece in the 1950s. Always passionate about music in his youth, Michael soon teamed up with Andrew Ridgeley and together the two began playing DJ shows and small live performances in and around North London. In 1981 the duo formed the seminal band Wham!, an outfit that would catapult them to stardom. The band’s first album, Fantastic, reached number one in the UK charts, featuring a number of hit singles including ‘Young Guns (Go for it)’ and ‘Club Tropicana’. However, it was their second release, Make it Big, that saw the group achieve international recognition. The album reached number one in the US charts, with the single ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go Go’ a huge hit around the world. In 1984, Michael featured on the original ‘Band Aid’ track, and then a year later, the pair became the first western act to tour China. By the middle of 1986, Wham! had officially run its course and George Michael, the solo artist, was born. After a series of successful singles and collaborations throughout that year, Michael recorded Faith, an album that would cement his place in musical history. With a host of hit singles including ‘Father Figure’ and ‘One More Try’, Faith remains one of the biggest selling albums of all time, selling well over 25 million copies. Exhausted and over-exposed by the publicity machine that Faith became, Michael changed direction in his next album releasing Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1 in 1990. Determined to be taken more seriously as a musician, Michael refused to engage in the promotion desired by his record company, releasing several singles without the now necessary music video. Following a protracted dispute with his label, and after a lengthy period out of the spotlight, Michael released Older in 1996. The album would do well in both Europe and the US and featured a number of touching tracks, including ‘Jesus to a Child’, a tribute to the death of Michael’s lover. Older earned Michael the ‘Best British Male’ award at the MTV Europe music awards, and through a series of remixes, continues to sell well today. Although many see George Michael as a superficial ‘80s pop star, he is more than this. Writing, playing on and producing almost all of his songs, Michael is a musician who has earned his right to stardom. There’s no doubt his music, bar possibly the track ‘Club Tropicana’, has stood the test of time. His songs continue to be played on mainstream radio and his music makes regular appearances in nightclubs around the world. Bringing with him one of the most esteemed live production teams in the business, this concert may be worth the exorbitant price the high-end tickets are going for. ANDY RUGG

THURSDAY 8 NICOLA FASANO

Outlandish Antony + the Johnsons

Koncerthuset; 20:00: 350-780kr Led by Antony Hegarty, the avant-garde pop group date back to the late ‘90s. Creating a brand of alternative rock that has come to be known as Baroque pop - a strain of sophisticated pop music that veers away from the mainstream - Antony and the Johnsons have remained quietly ambitious throughout their career and given rise to a silent revolution within the industry with their blunt originality, sobering lyrics, and sensible instrumentation. Tremendously popular, practically the world over, the group will be performing again tomorrow evening at the same time to cater for their hundreds of fans. (English) DvdN

Tivoli, 20:00; 215-490 kr Outlandish are one of Denmark’s biggest mainstream hip-hop acts, stringing together elements from several genres to make simple, radio-friendly hip-hop pop records that, unfortunately, don’t hold your attention. Although they lack imagination and vigour, the group’s huge fan-base will no doubt be egging them on for encore after encore after encore. (English) DvdN

Burnin’ Red Ivanhoe

Amager Bio; 21:00; 150 kr This quintet emerged in the late ‘60s with a pioneering style that borrowed widely from blues, jazz, and psychedelia. Although the instruments take precedence in their music, the vocals are in Danish, but don’t let this put you off. (Danish) DvdN

Vinnie Who

Koncerthuset; 22:00; 190 kr Used to playing to sell-out crowds across Scandinavia, the Danish electro-pop band offer a brand of disco-pop that is comprised of ‘90s disco beats, simplistic lyrics and minimalistic electro-samples. Catchy, danceable and definably pop, their music has become understandably popular among young Danes, encapsulating the sound of Kødbyen’s trendy indie-electro scene, as well as dominating the mainstream charts across Scandinavia. Those looking to party into the early hours of the morning will be pleased to know there’s an after-party after the concert. (English) DvdN

CSS

Lille Vega; 20:00: 200 kr Short for the Portuguese expression ‘Cansei De Ser Sexy’ - which translates into English as ‘Tired of being sexy’ - the São Paulo sextet, headed by the sassy female vocalist Lovefoxxx, offer a provocative combination of electro, rock and dance elements that translate into massive dancefloor anthems. Currently on a promotional tour for their third studio-album, La Liberación (2011) - which features the groundbreaking alternative British group Primal Scream - the Brazilian hipsters remain a prominent force on the party-circuit, who are renowned for their wildly energetic live performances. (English/Portuguese) DvdN

Shonen Knife

Loppen, 21:00; 100 kr Shonen Knife are, to cut it short, one of Japan’s biggest pop-punk outfits of all time. The three-piece all-female band - whose group name interestingly translates into English as ‘boy knife’ - offer a western-sounding pop-punk sound that’s liberating, uplifting and brimming with attitude. Led by female vocalist Naoko Yamano - whose vocal style shares uncanny similarities with Debbie Harry - the trio have been active since the very beginning of the ‘80s and are currently celebrating the release of their 19th studioalbum, Osaka Ramones (2011). (English) DvdN

Paolo Russo (solo + trio)

Jazzhus Montmarte; 20:00; 250kr (50% student discount) Hailed as one of Europe’s greatest jazz personalities, Pescaranborn Russo is a pianist and bandoneón player. Now based in Copenhagen, Russo has delved into practically every musical tradition - from Nordic folk music through to Argentinian tango - and performed concerts in almost every continent. This evening the jazz supremo will be drawing material from his large repetoire, performing both solo and as part of his handpicked trio. Another fantastic opportunity to sample Copenhagen’s rich jazz culture, this is a must for jazz lovers. (English/Danish) DvdN

ood eVening Copenhagen! We’re Primal Scream and we’re going to kick your ass!” These were the opening words from the enigmatic, controversial lead singer of Primal Scream, the legendary Bobby gillespie, as he took to the stage at Vega on Sunday night. Two hours later, at the end of a sweaty, hefty concert, few present would deny that Primal Scream did just that. in fact, the London-based alternative rockers were nothing less than brilliant on the evening, performing with energy and enthusiasm that could easily have filled and thrilled an entire Wembley. The fact that Primal Scream were performing songs off their Screamadelica album, a collectors’ artefact that’s a good 20 years old, testifies as to just how timeless a musical creation it is. Screamadelica was an album that espoused the fusion of acid house and alternative rock with a perfection comparable to few other artists and bands of the immediate post-acid house period of the early ’90s. Many would in fact argue that it is the album that best elucidates Primal Scream’s varied and eclectic musical genius, and hence it is

little wonder that the band are at their unbeatable best when performing songs off it. Sunday’s concert started in subtle fashion, with a couple of tracks that warmed the crowd up before guest singer denise Johnson stole the hearts of the audience with her performance of ‘don’t Fight it Feel it’. Johnson’s powerful lyrics juxtaposed alongside epic piano stabs and catchy, quick-fire beats set the tone for the rest of the evening,

which built up progressively, layer upon layer. A particularly emblematic moment during the proceedings was ‘Loaded’, Primal Scream’s signature track, played towards the end of the concert, a tune that proved to be the instigator of quite the crowd frenzy as gillespie’s rebellious chants of “We wanna be free to do what we wanna do” rang loud and clear over pronounced electric guitar strings in the background.

LADIES DAY

A cheery ovation from the audience at the end of it all, punctuated by chants of “High till the day that i die” summed up Primal Scream’s night out at Vega. Musical history was relived and recreated through the echoes of the second summer of love, a musical period that fuelled the dance floor dreams of an entire generation. AllAn Mutuku-kortbæk

HOMICIDE AND ABOMINATION: CRIMINAL COPENHAGEN THE DANISH metropolis has never been short of macabre stories. Join us as we revisit the criminals of the past – some who were more wicked than others. Infanticide Hirschsprung, Stockholmsgade 20, 2100 Cph Ø; open Mon, WedSun 11:00-16:00; www.hirschsprung.dk Clearly, criminals committing the crime of infanticide are the worst. At the Hirschsprung you can see the painting ‘The Infanticide’. It is painted by Erik Hemmingsen (1855-1930) and presents a child murder investigation. The young woman’s arm is taken in a firm grasp by a policeman, implying that she is perhaps guilty of killing the child. The subheading of the painting is ‘Summum jus, summa injura’ (Extreme justice is extreme injustice), which suggests that while the young woman is judged by the standards of law for murdering her own child, perhaps she was forced by the unwritten laws of society to do so. ‘ROLL UP, roll up, wherever you are.” Most of us have heard this well-known utterance when visiting the circus when we were wee kids. However, not all have been lucky enough to be introduced to the grand performance of Circus Benneweis. Circus Benneweis, one of the oldest circuses in the world, has been a ‘family affair’ since it was founded by Gottfried Benneweis in 1887. Today his great granddaughter Diana Benneweis is the director and the lady in charge of the 124-year-old circus. Circus Benneweis is proud to present a show with exotic animals, beautiful circus princesses and ‘clowny’ comedy at its best. At the helm, and back after a two-year break, is ringmaster Judy Glosted, who also comes from a well-known circus family. In the circus ring this year, you’ll meet Sonja, Vana Mana and Dehli, who are by far the largest artists performing in this circus, or any circus for that matter. They’re the elephants of course, and you’ll watch in amazement as they under the watchful eye of Lars Hölscher show off their dancing, acrobatics and more. Next up, get your heart racing when The Jasters take the stage for the very first time in Denmark. Their dangerous performance contains knife throwing and crossbow shooting at a live target! Feel the hairs rising on your back? While you might consider waxing, if

They do not jest - the Jasters are deadly serious

you don’t you might as well get used to that feeling, because that is where they will stay when Cheban Troupe takes the stage with their high-speed acrobatic number, doing jumps and somersaults sitting on large rubber wheels. However, Benneweis is not all about large animals and scary tricks. This year they are proud to present a showman straight from Las Vegas, Coperlin. He comes from the famous Nicolodi circus family and lives up to his name tenfold. With his mix of comedy and juggling, he is sure to impress. Staying in the family way are the Saabels. This mum, dad and daughter knows a thing or two about horses, dogs and handstands. Alexandra, the youngest Saabel, will show you movements you never knew possible, so dress to

impress because with the Saabels, everything is impressive! Last, but not least meet Tito Medina and Du. These two gentlemen from Spain are world-known for their comic trapeze show. Tito Medina started as a street juggler, and then moved on to studying various forms of circus techniques, specialising today in juggling, trapeze, clowning, acrobatics and even music. Nutty chicken satay

FOOD BLOG

BY SIMON COOPER

THE STANDOUT advantage of being someone who laps up eating any dinner at any table, in any country, is that inspiration (or good fortune) can come in many different forms. A month ago I was at a wedding in the southern region of Silesia in Poland where, true to form, one of umpteen courses consisted of a mountain of grilled and fried meat stacked up on a plate. One dish that particularly caught my eye was an intriguing type of pork cutlet. Coated and baked like a schnitzel, in oats and nuts as well as breadcrumbs, it gave a new dimension to the meaning of texture in food. And aside from being damn

Restaurant Kiin Kiin Guldbergsgade 21, Copenhagen N; 3535 7535; fourcourse menu 450kr, sevencourse 775kr (with wine menu 1450kr); www.kiin.dk There are only two Thai restaurants in the whole world that have been awarded a Michelin star. One of them is in London, the other one is Kiin Kiin, which you will find in the heart of Nørrebro. And it is well deserved. PDR Kiin Kiin isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience, a place where every little detail is thought through. PDR 1. th. Herluf Gade 9, 1052 Cph K; 3393 5770, 1th@1th.dk; www.1th.dk; 1,250kr per person 1th. is a gourmet restaurant with a twist. Tucked away behind a hard to-find-door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS Reinwald’s Farvergade 15, 1463 Cph K; open Mon-Sat 14:00-24:00 (kitchen closes at 22:00); 3391 8289; www.reinwalds. dk; five-course menu with wine 850kr, other dishes 75215kr Serving lunch and dinner, a director’s-script length of choices confronts you at. It’s a who’s who of classic French and French-inspired Danish dishes as well as a monthly set menu. Any chef would be proud of this. SC

tasty, it also brought back memories of, as a child, how much fun it was to eat sweet things layered in nuts and oats. I told myself I’d try something similar, but in a satay style. I had done satay before, but it had unfortunately been some drunken, post-pub mash-up of sickeningly salty peanuts and half a tub of margarine which, although consigned to the discountable list of rubbish eaten under the influence, methodologically stood me in good stead for when I would next attempt the dish. So below is a recipe I came up with for nutty, slightly mustardy chicken satay kebabs. That is, kebabs on their own.

Cap Horn Nyhavn 21, Cph K; open Mon-Fri 10:00-00:00, Sat-Sun 09:00-00:00; 3312 8504; starters from 99kr, main courses from 139kr, desserts from 39kr; see www.caphorn.dk for special events Nyhavn, the old harbour, is an idyllic area of magic and hygge what the Danes like to say when referring to anything that is cosy, charming, or delightful: all qualities Cap Horn has in abundance. Its simple menu boasts a fine selection of organic, homemade Danish fare, with a touch of seasonal influence. There were too highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a ‘best ever veal experience) and the chocolate cake (‘Oh My God’), whih was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! MM BioMio Halmtorvet 19, 1700 Cph V; open daily 12:00-24:00 (later Fri and Sat), kitchen open 12:00-22:00; 3331 2000; starters 75kr, mains 135kr; www. biomio.dk Located in an old warehouse next to trendy Kødbyen, Bio Mio is certainly unusual for conservative Copenhagen. It’s stylish without being pretentious, fast enough that they don’t go crazy waiting for food, and loud enough that they can make a racket without anyone raising an eyebrow. JH SushiTreat Fox Jarmers Plads 3, Cph V; open Mon-Thu 16:30-22:00, Fri-Sat 16:30-24:00 with Club Treat from 22:00-02:00; 3338 7030 The newly-opened restaurant SushiTreat at the Hotel Fox serves the best California-style sushi in the city, offers an impressive drinks and wine card, and a completely unique atmosphere on Friday and Saturday nights when you can order sushi until 2am while listening to some of the city’s best DJs . chicken breasts packet of honey-roasted peanuts porridge oats, breadcrumbs (or crackers) one other type of nut (pine nuts are a bit too moist - cashews or flaked almonds work perfectly) butter, egg, flour, grain or Dijon mustard lemon, clove of garlic, seasoning skewers (optional) To get the consistency for the satay paste right, either crush the ingredients in a mortar or put them one by one into a food blender. Either works, though in my eyes crushing with old fashioned tools is infinitely more fun, as well as offering a work-out of sorts. Preheat your oven to 200°C. How many nuts you’ll need depends on how much chicken breast you’re cooking and for how many people. For enough chicken for two people, a generous handful of the peanuts, and half a handful of oats, breadcrumbs and your second type of nuts is about right. Put in the blender, or grind with a pestle and mortar - with the latter don’t pound everything until it’s fine and sand-like, make sure you keep rough lumps of nut. Add a level teaspoon of mustard, the same of butter, the juice of half a lemon, salt and pepper, and a very finely diced garlic clove. Keep crushing - or switch on the blender. Whether you go at it manually or electronically, you’re looking for a lumpy paste that is a little moist, though not enough for it to lose shape. Chop your chicken breasts into good sized lumps to go on a skewer (if you don’t have any, keep the breasts intact and flatten them out into a schnitzel-like shape for easier cooking). Assuming

The main courses are substantial, honestly cooked and rich in taste and include Vienna schnitzel with baked new potatoes and coleslaw and chicken breast topped with apricots and cheese. There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. you use skewers, carefully roll the kebabs in flour, in egg and then into the nut mixture. Using the dry hand you used for the flour, pack the nut mixture around the meat firmly. Repeat this twice for each kebab. At the end use your hands to compact the mixture firmly around the chicken; you can also use up any leftover paste by doing this. Another tip is to do them in advance, then leave them in the fridge so the paste can set a little. Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper and place kebabs onto it and into the oven. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the coating turns golden brown. Whilst the chicken is in the oven, you’ve got 20-25 minutes in which to throw together whatever you fancy to go with it. I advise something to go with them though; cold rice salads are great, as are normal salads. Try something more oriental using ginger, pear or apricot as they complement chicken well. And of course, you can always let the meat cool too as the kebabs are delicious cold.

Pubs The Irish Rover Strøget 46, 1161 Cph K; Open daily 10:00-late; www. irishrover.dk You won’t find a more childfriendly pub in the whole city. From the fish and chip expat family nights at 17:00 on the last Friday of every month, to enjoying the Sunday roast (lamb, all the trimmings, just 99kr, kids portion for 58kr), they are always welcome. There’s live music Thursday-Sunday (22:00-late), the kitchen is open from 10:00 until late every day serving a burger meal with pint for just 120kr - the pub caters to all sports fans, there’s a pool table in their back room where you can smoke, upstairs there’s a new lounge area - the perfect place to relax with a view over Strøget. Each dish can be easily matched by one of Brew Pub’s own concoctions from the casks across the courtyard. AK Kennedy’s Irish Bar Gammel Kongevej 23, 1610 Cph V; Open Mon-Sun 12:0002:00 It’s not an Irish pub. Instead it’s a pub owned by Irishmen, and there’s a big difference. It’s an authentic taste of what the Emerald Isle was like in the 1980s in a pub totally devoid of concepts, themes, and DIY Irish pub kits. Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. BH

Southern Cross Løngangstræde 37, Cph K; open Sun-Thu 15:00-03:00, Sat-Sun 12:00-05:00; 3311 0939 This Aussie boozer is a mecca for expats and Danes, old and young, that has a lively darts board, a fortnightly quiz, a good sports-viewing atmosphere, and a happy hour that lasts to 8pm during which you can beers for just 30kr. JHW The Dubliner Amagertorv 5, Strøget, 1160 Cph K; Opening Hours: Mon-Sun 10:00-late This pub is never quiet. It’s the perfect place for sports fans to mingle, or for live music which it provides every day. It also serves food all day from 10am to 10pm, and diners can find peace from the music and sport on a table overlooking the walking street, or on the first floor balcony overlooking Amagertorv. BH The Globe Nørregade 43-45, 1165 Cph K; Opening hours vary, until 03:00 Fri-Sat Friendly service and good value food make this the perfect city pub, and it’s difficult to know where to enjoy your pint given the number of options. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, a private function the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. BH The Old English Pub Vesterbrogade 2B, 1620 Cph V; Open Sun-Thu 11:30-02:30, Fri-Sat 11:30-04:30; 3332 1921; www.oldenglishpub.dk This Victorian style English pub has all the class and authenticity of a Cotswolds country pub not a Costa del Sol flea trap. Facing Tivoli’s arches and just a stone’s throw from Strøget, it’s the ideal pit-stop on a tour of the city centre LB

Balkan buffet to leave your belly dancing with joy ImagIne hIstory, a magical wonderland, and gypsy music in the background, throw in a great portion of hearty meaty food, and there’s a good chance you’re thinking about hercegovina. no, I’m not referring to the region in the Balkans, but to a restaurant that brings Croatian, Bosnian and serbian tastes to your palates in the centre of Copenhagen within the sacred borders of tivoli. and once you’ve been there, you’ll never forget it. From its belly dancers to its giant leg of lamb or suckling pig cooking over the open coals in the centre of the restaurant, it has been providing Copenhageners with memorable dining experiences for over half a century. Ivan Juric founded hercegovina on 1 may 1986. hailing from mostar in the hercegovina region of the former yugoslavia, he is not only a food enthusiast but also a trained chef from an acclaimed cooking school in Dubrovnik. his passion for food was then further fuelled by years of experience at restaurant kitchens in Denmark. The theme of the restaurant was traditional and authentic Balkan food and the aim was to satisfy customers with good food and excellent service, just like any other restaurant. But where Juric excelled was by adding the element of a prestigious location to the equation. adjoining tivoli and situated opposite Copenhagen’s central train station, the formula could not have gone wrong. “The beginnings were uncertain”, says restaurant manager maria Lukac humbly - a quality that also presents itself in the ambience of the restaurant. Like most ethnic restaurants that established themselves in the 1980s in Denmark, hercegovina too took its time to settle into Danish society. But over the years, not only has the customer base expanded, but also the segment of repeat customers and inquisitive food buffs who venture to the prime location looking to experience the exotic and rather mysterious cuisine, served at competitive prices. “Be it business, pleasure or a celebration, hercegovina has a table for you for all occasions,” says Lukac. another appealing aspect of hercegovina is the variety in the cuisine. over the years the menu and dishes have evolved to represent and cater to the tastes of everyone. This was seen in the first course that we were served, which

consisted of plate of Dalmatian smoked ham with cheese, oil dressing and olives. at first I was taken back to Italy, but was then informed that it was also traditional Croatian. The course was accompanied with a bottle of Croatian, grasevina 2008. For the main course we were served an assortment of grilled meats, homemade sausages, hamburger steaks, potatoes and salad. an outstanding feature of Balkan food is the generous proportions of meat. For meat lovers hercegovina is a true haven.

For the rest of the evening we shared a bottle of Vranac 2006 and a Postup 2006. as a newcomer to Croatian wine, I was pleasantly surprised at the burst of flavours that both the wines exhibited. Throughout the evening, I glanced around to get a feel for the place, trying to find words to best describe hercegovina. It would be appropriate to say that the ambience is relaxed, comfort-

able and definitely friendly. The menu, furnishings and staff are unpretentious, friendly and attentive. The customers are never neglected and accommodated in every way by the staff. at the end of the evening, just like every other customer, I left hercegovina having experienced exotic Balkan food that left wonderful aftertastes, ever so slightly tipsy after sampling the distinct aromatic wines.

Aliens and westerns should be neither shaken nor stirred ARUN SHARMA

Cowboys and Aliens (11)

Dir: Jon Favreau; US action, 2011, 118 mins; Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell Premiered September 01 Playing nationwide

H

AVING previously flinched and winced our way through one terrible example of the Western-meets-sci-fi in Wild, Wild West, and having huffed and puffed as the pure wood performances of Kevin Kline and Will Smith went up in smoke, the thought of revisiting this particularly unsavoury form of genrecrossing between two of the most distinct and distinctly incompatible genres in cinema was not a pleasant one. And, having sat through and barely survived Cowboys & Aliens, the closest analogy that comes to mind in describing this unholiest of unions is one of being strapped to a chair and made to watch a sparrow being forcibly impregnated by a rhinoceros. Something that frankly ought to have been a throwaway joke or a doodle on an executive’s notepad has inextricably made it through the system, overseen with the heaviest of hands by Iron Man director Jon Favreau. It is 1875 and escaped outlaw Daniel Craig – with perpetual, lemonsucking facial expression in tow - wakes up in the middle of the desert with no memory and a strange metal bracelet clamped around his wrist. What follows is a mind-numbingly lazy stepby-step evocation of a clichéd western narrative, whereby our mean-looking,

In the race for the title of Best Actor in the film, it’s a close call between the rock and the cloud floating in the background lone-riding, muted hero finds himself in a suitably hostile frontier town and immediately humiliates and helps incarcerate a drunken trouble-maker, only to find he is the son of ruthless landowner and local bigwig Harrison Ford. Ford subsequently rides into town in order to force the release of his spoiled, sniveling, ineffectual, embarrassment of a son, but manages to arrive just in time for an attack by alien spacecraft that, using some type of grabby reverse-bungee technique, pluck his son and several others off the ground for some undoubtedly unpleasant anal-probing sessions back

on the mothership. A posse as unlikely as the fellowship of the ring is immediately formed – consisting of Craig (whose bracelet turns out to be a conveniently effective weapon against the aliens), a gruff and pithy Ford, an orphan boy, a mangy dog, a Native American, a good-natured wisdomspouting preacher and a mysterious woman – all of whom collectively form one of the most miscast group of actors in cinematic history. Following a series of mind-bogglingly pointless plot strands that arise randomly only to peter out into insignificance, our posse finally discover the alien mothership. This vast, gaunt

structure is, in keeping with everything else on offer, really quite laughable. It is a huge, phallic lump of a thing designed to be camouflaged by the surrounding rocks, yet it looks more like the concrete, multi-storey car park in Get Carter, used to great effect there for throwing dodgy Geordie businessmen to their deaths. If only Michael Caine were around to meet out a similar fate to Favreau and co. It would be nice to think of Cowboys & Aliens as an intentional satire on the Hollywood myth factory that endlessly dramatises heroic frontiersmen taking on the sinister unknown. It would be nice to think it was a com-

mentary on white America’s fear of the Other, or on the simple fact that for the Native Americans represented as cardboard cutouts here, it was the cowboys who were the aliens. Unfortunately, this is not the case, and the film is played out with worryingly little in the way of satire or self-irony. “I’ve seen good men do bad things and bad men do good things,” declares the preacher in one of his many platitudes. If this pearl of wisdom were applied to the efforts of director Favreau and the plethora of writers employed on the film, the implication would undoubtedly be that they are very, very good men indeed.

Gosling, Gielgud and Goebbels among others Cinemateket in September Gothersgade 55, Cph K 3374 3400; www.dfi.dk

Highly recommended: Die Blechtrommel (15)

C

INEMATEKET has continually offered us a wide range of interesting and often challenging films, and its September programme doesn’t disappoint. The film of the month, which will be shown several

times throughout September is Die Blechtrommel (1979), directed by Volker Schöndorff. This German/Polish film (based on the novel by Günther Grass) tells the unusual story of a German boy born just before the Second World War began. Unusual, because the boy wilfully stops his own physical body growing, despite the fact that his inner-self is ageing naturally with the passage of time. The intentional halting of his growth is done as a protest against the passivity of many of the German population during the growth of Nazism. The film is one of the German film industry’s biggest international successes, winning Best Foreign Film at the 1980 Oscars. This coming month also

features the film work of Canadian star Ryan Gosling. Gosling is currently big news, due to the upcoming release of Drive - the film that won Nicolas Winding Refn the Best Director prize at Cannes, and in which Gosling stars. You now have the chance to see what a versatile actor he is by catching up with his earlier work on the big screen. What about one of his earliest movies: the true life political story, The Believer (2001), or his comedic work in Lars and the Real Girl (2007), or perhaps his romantic role in Blue Valentine (2010)? Each month, Cinemateket has a series of films under the title ‘Ønskefilm’. The films included are from a wide of genres, time periods and na-

tional origins. One interesting choice this month is Providence (1977), which stars John Gielgud, Dirk Bogarde and Ellen Burstyn. Gielgud plays a sick man, resigned to his bed, who thinks up a story in which his relatives all play the characters. According to his own storyline, his kinsmen appear as a terrible bunch of mean, jealous good-for-nothings. But can we be sure that this is how they really are or is it just the viewpoint of a twisted old man? Other films in the series include Psych-Out (1968), Serrpico (1978) and The Crimson Pirate (1952). VICTORIA STEFFENSEN

Book Your Tickets Tree of Life (11) Dir: Terence Malick; 2011, 139 mins; Brad Pitt, Sean Penn There are too many beautifully observed moments to dismiss Malick’s fifth film in over 40 years with derision as was the case recently at a Cannes screening. Told in several timelines, the film follows a religious Midwest family in the 1950s and is a rare opportunity to experience pure cinema as it was intended. MW

Beginners (3) Dir: Mike Mills; 2010, 105 mins; Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer Beginners is the touching and often funny account of a rootless son who drifts from relationship to relationship and feels creatively shackled and under-appreciated in his work as an illustrator. Mill’s film is just like poetry, where words and pictures flirt dynamically with one another. MW

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows II (11) Dir: David Yates; 2011, 130 mins; Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint The Harry Potter finale ended an era last July. Cinematic magic follows our heroic threesome with a more assured Harry complementing lightning-quick thinking Hermione and the steady presence of Ron. With a litany of impossible foes and an actionpacked battle sequence finale, it’s one of the better HP films. SS

Melancholia (15) Dir: Lars Von Trier; 2011, 130 mins; Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg Justine feels trapped in a limousine with her newly wedded husband en route to her own wedding reception. From here, we witness the end of the world: a giant planet called Melancholia is on a course towards Earth. The film brilliantly conveys a paralysing loneliness - the claustrophobic sensation of being trapped inside one’s own skin. MW

Also Playing Horrible Bosses (11) Dir: Seth Gordon; 2011; 100 mins; Jason Bateman, Charlie Day Old friends Nick, Kurt and Dale are conscientious workers. Their immediate superiors happen to be the vilest people they have ever known. Ferociously plotdriven with several hilarious scenes, Horrible Bosses unfolds like dominos tumbling faster and louder, creating ever grimmer repercussions for the main characters, a likeable bunch of average guys. KRG

Super 8 (11) Dir: JJ Abrams; 2011, 118 mins; Elle Fanning, Noah Emmerich Super 8 takes you on a trip to childhood excitement, and is a homage to past Spielberg fantasy adventure movies. The whole ensemble of unknown newcomers winds up creating teenage gawkiness every bit as natural

and unforced as the real thing. The relationships between these youngsters are the real heart and soul of the movie. MW

Barney’s Version (3) Dir: Richard J Lewis; 2010, 138 mins; Paul Giamatti, Dustin Hoffman Barney Panofsky is a lonely embittered man, reduced to drinking at home while telephonically tormenting his ex-wife’s new partner at ungodly hours. The film, an adaptation of the novel Barney’s Version, has one great strength: the comic yet insightful depictions of these relationships that populate an unarguably colourful life. MW

Bobby Fischer Against the World (11) Dir: Liz Garbus; 2011; 93 min Cast: Bobby Fischer, Regina Fischer Bobby Fischer reassuringly reminds us that the price of success is one that most would not wish to pay. With archive footage, photographs, and with contemporary interviews familiar to countless other documentary portraits, this is a poignant and unsettling film, but Garbus provides no revelations for anyone who has followed Fischer’s story. AS

Bridesmaids (3) Dir: Paul Feig; US Comedy, 2011, 128 mins; Kirsten Wiig, Maya Rudolph In this zany comedy, a group of femmes magnifies clichés of women everywhere. Adorable

Annie’s story holds a humour that works like a sitcom right up until the madness turns into a romantic comedy. And as much as they might protest, there is a chance it will get a chuckle out of the guys as well. KN

Captain America: The First Avenger (15) Dir: Joe Johnston; US action, 2011, 124 mins; Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving With Captain America: The First Avenger, everything is in place for the biggest gathering of superheroes on celluloid ever. It’s 1942. Steve Rogers is the small scrawny kid with more ailments than ligaments. But with the help of his good friend Howard Stark, Rogers is turned into a physical specimen at its peak level of performance: Captain America is born. While Johnston doesn’t wow us with anything new this time around, at least he has put together a film worth seeing. KE

The Hangover Part II (11) Dir: Todd Phillips; 2011, 120 mins; Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms The Hangover Part II is the same premise as the first film. Stu is getting married in Thailand with the gang in tow, when his fiancee’s younger brother isfound missing. If The Hangover Part II was not a sequel, it would receive much higher praise, but it set the bar so high that reaching it again is virtually impossible. KE

Midnight in Paris (3) Dir: Woody Allen; UK/ France comedy, 2011, 94 mins; Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams Premiered August 11 At the stroke of midnight, Gil discovers a portal to the 1920s in the shape of an automobile; he is whisked away to a Paris of yesteryear populated by the literary and artistic giants of that age. Despite the promising trailer, a sinking disappointment accompanies the realisation – this is going to be one of Woody’s daffier works. MW

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (11) Dir: Rupert Wyatt; USA Sci-fi 2011, 105 min; James Franco, Andy Serkis Rupert Wyatt succeeds in enticing us with an intriguing concept: in our near future, a drug is being developed with the ultimate aim of curing Alzheimer’s. Unfortunately, what followed that initial idea was didactic and sometimes illogical with dumbed-down dialogue and performances that too frequently fail to impress. MW

Unknown (15) Dir: Jaume Collet-Serra; 2011, 113 mins; Liam Neeson, Diane Kruger, January Jones Unknown is a chilly little thriller about amnesia, mistrust and lost identity. Interchangeable Euro baddies lurk in the shadows, seeming omniscient and omnipresent, waiting to strike. As the movie reveals itself, you may

G19

discover that it reminds you of another superior one, which we will not name for fear of giving away the twist. JH

Avoid like the Plague Conan the Barbarian (15) Dir: Marcus Nispel; US Adventure; 2011, 112 mins; Jason Momoa, Ron Perlman Ten-year-old Conan, already a junior killing machine, has his world turned upside down when warlord Khalar Zim comes to his village in search of a mask that will give him the power to rule Hibernia. This version of John Milius’s 1982 film is a tedious waste-of-time: minimal on story, character, and intrigue. DS

Green Lantern (11) Dir: Martin Campbell; US sci-fi action, 2011, 114 mins; Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively Enter the latest incarnation of the Green Lantern franchise, the illegitimate 3D love-child of Top Gun and Flubber, an abomination that has the distinction of being both a remake and the precursor to a plethora of sequels. The film leaves one wishing that instead of 3D, we had been offered just one dimension of content or creativity. AS

Blood and Guts - A History of Surgery

spor t THE W OF EEK

DR2, Monday - Friday 18:15

THIS WEEK’S TV selection is a bit like the shark autopsy scene in Jaws – lots of blood and guts but nothing particularly revelatory. First up, Blood and Guts – A History of Surgery (DR2, Mon 18:10) provides us with a thousand reasons to be grateful for our public health system. Back in the days before hospitals, the only option was the local monastery where if the leeches didn’t kill you, Brother Cadfael invariably would. Don’t miss Thursday’s episode on the victims of early 17th century plastic surgery – they’d try anything to get rid of that Habsburg Chin. While there are a few successes, we watch programmes like this for the disasters - let’s be honest. Which is probably why we’ll tune in for Catfish (SV1, Tue

22:00), the controversial doc about a romance via Facebook, which many have claimed is a complete fake. Just like Time magazine states, we’ll all be “squirming in anticipation of the trouble that must lie ahead why else would this be a movie?” Not sure if the same is true of Gordon Ramsey’s Shark Bait (TV3, Wed 21:00), particularly when, as the Guardian observed, you find out “he’s not impaled on a giant hook, wriggling like a maggot, and lowered into the ocean”. Instead he’s investigating their slaughter to make shark-fin soup – a dish he doesn’t even like - although the Guardian tells him he’s out of his comfort zone: “You wouldn’t want Roger Cook panfrying your scallops, would you?”

And the gorefest is complete with Blood On Our Hands - The English Civil War (DRK, Mon 20:00, repeated Thu 18:15), a docudrama that reminds us how the country had never been more peaceful ... just a decade beforehand. Elsewhere, the Little Britain team are back with controversial DR2, Mon-Fri 18:15 Blood and Guts - A History of Surgery airport sitcom Come Fly with Me; there’s a chance to watch the first ever episode of House (SV4, Tue 23:00), which has just started its seventh season on the same channel (Tue 21:00); and Kevin McCloud’s Grand Tour (TV3 Puls, Thu 22:00) looks at how the aristos of old (circa 1680-1840) used to enjoy their holidays.
