Cal Poly Pomona’s College of Professional and Global Education (CPGE) is committed to providing a climate that supports Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Our goal is for all to feel welcomed, respected and valued. CPGE’s support includes: further expanding diversity in our team, while also representing all different cultures and backgrounds in all of our marketing and communication efforts, and designing programs to support the workforce and global needs for all to succeed.

ABOUT CPGE

In Spring 2022, the College of the Extended University (CEU) announced its new name as College of Professional & Global Education (CPGE); the new name reflects the many diverse groups and people that CPGE serves. Fiscal year 2022-23 was a fast-paced year for our team as we worked diligently to implement a new enterprise system for our career and professional development programs, custom training programs, non-credit, and English language training programs. We also worked to update all websites, documents, processes, communications, logos, campaigns, promotional items, building signage, etc., to reflect our new college name.

During the name changing process, a new vision for CPGE was also developed and has been serving as our guide as we work collaboratively with our campus and industry partners and valued stakeholders. The new vision has three main focus areas. The first is what is referred to as CPP+ which is designed to support the university-to-student partnership through extended programs, courses, and services that will directly support the needs of our students, alumni, and local community members with their careers and life-long learning. A diverse range of academic credit courses and master’s degrees, as well as non-credit career and professional development courses and programs that are available in different learning formats including on-site, online and hybrid modalities. These programs are designed to meet the needs of the adult-learner and working professionals.

The second focus area is on the Industry Connection which is designed to support the university-to-business partnerships that CPGE has with our local or domestic industry partners to build new and expand upon existing partnerships to help businesses meet their staffing and training needs through custom trainings, internships, apprenticeships, and workforce development programs.

The third focus area is on the Global Campus which is designed to support the university-to-university partnerships that CPGE has across the globe. These collaborative and supportive services and programs are designed for specific needs of our international students and global partners. This includes services to visiting faculty, as well as campus international students, with SEVIS and academic advising to meet compliance requirements, issuing of I-20’s, J-1’s, and supporting international students with OPT and CPT opportunities. It also includes exchange and study abroad programs to support students from institutions across the globe to come to CPP for part of their educational experience, as well as opportunities for our CPP students to increase their global readiness through learning experiences in another country and culture. This unit within CPGE also works with global partners to provide custom trainings and provide English language training programs.

During this past year, some valuable strides were made in three focal areas. In Fall 2022, in support of the CPP+ and Industry Connection, one focal area was the launch of the new Master of Science in Digital Supply Chain Management that is offered in partnership with the College of Business Administration and Singelyn Graduate School of Business at Cal Poly Pomona. A new partnership with Zschool was launched to expand our online career development course offerings with new programs in Women in Leadership, Digital Marketing, and Design Thinking. CPGE also renewed its status as an approved iTrain provider to support workforce development with our career development programs in Construction Management and Plastics Manufacturing.

The Global Campus focal area was supported through CPP and CPGE joining the American Council on Education’s (ACE) Internationalization Lab in Fall 2022. This partnership will support CPP and CPGE in developing strategic and coordinated integrated international policies, programs, and initiatives to support our university with being intentional in CPP’s approach to being a leading global campus of choice. We look forward to continually expanding all three focal areas and working with you, our valued partner and stakeholder in the years ahead.

STUDENTS SERVED

CPGE served a total of 7,435 students during the 2022-23 school year. We are proud of our graduates, program completers, and excited for those that joined a course or program during the year and are in pursuit of moving towards their educational goals. Supporting life-long learning is our specialty and passion. Our diverse programs are designed to meet the needs of working professionals, college students, and in providing college experiences for students in 4th grade through high school.

SUMMER SESSION

Summer session 2023 gave students an opportunity to get ahead or stay on track for graduation and in support of the campus GI 2025 goals. Most of the summer session consists of self-support courses through CPGE. This year, CPGE led the marketing efforts in a new way by implementing a campaign that showcased Cal Poly Pomona’s diverse student population in addition to the original summer Billy Bronco designs. This campaign featured our diverse students in various marketing materials such as a billboard, banners, and posters across campus and more. To promote the Summer session, CPGE hosted two informational events in collaboration with the Bronco Advising Center.

As a Systems Engineer for Raytheon, Alejandro has been recognized by his colleagues for his initiatives and efforts to advance programs governed by the Military Defense Agency (MDA). He still references his old MSSE course material to support his engineering tasks.

GLOBAL CAMPUS

Following the comprehensive envisioning process the College of the Extended University (CEU) is now known as the College of Professional and Global Education (CPGE). At the same time, the creation of Global Campus division is in alignment with CPP mission and the Academic Master Plan. It is a strategic step towards embracing the opportunities presented by the globalized world of higher education.

The Global Campus serves as a central hub to support the university’s international programs and global engagement. The structure enhances communications and collaborations with related campus communities on international affairs. The mission of Global Campus is to lead the institutional efforts in helping to inspire our students to be globally conscious citizens who engage with, and positively impact, our region and the world. The goal of Global Campus is to further diversify our institution by promoting and facilitating international activities, strengthening inbound and outbound student mobility and faculty exchanges, and boosting international innovative programs through partnership building and collaboration with educational institutions, organizations, and agencies throughout the world.

STEM CAMP

For over 15 years, CPGE has been providing customized summer camp programs to meet the needs of middle school and high school district partners. Los Angeles County and Bakersfield City School District have both been long-term partners and CPGE was proud of the newly developed hybrid model camps that their students were able to take part in this summer. The STEM camps provided this year focused on Aerospace Engineering, Algebra, and Applied Mathematics. The instruction was primarily provided online with field trip opportunities including a day at CPP for Bronco Family Day to share with the students and their parents all that a university campus has to offer as well as resources available to cover the costs. We look forward to having these students become future CPP Broncos!

CONGRATULATIONS & FAREWELL TO SYLVIA NGUYEN

After 19 plus years with Cal Poly Pomona, CPGE’s Accountant II extraordinaire, Sylvia Nguyen has decided to retire this October! Sylvia has often served as the main or only financial support staff member many times during her tenure with our college. She excels in providing thoughtful and thorough financial calculations, projections and reports and she takes great pride with each student, faculty member or colleague that she helps. She’s a strong supporter of students, faculty, education, and CPP/CPGE. Her numerous contributions to the campus and our college are all highly valued and appreciated. Her strong problem solving skills and extensive knowledge of CPP and the CSU system will be greatly missed.

However, Sylvia has many other interests outside of work and it’s now time for her to focus more on those areas of her life so that she can spend more time with family, friends, her hobbies and most of all - her dogs! Her second family here at CPGE, wishes her continued success and joy with all that she pursues in this next chapter of life. We will miss your warm and contagious smile Sylvia! Congratulations Sylvia on your incredible career with CPP and thank you for being a lifesaver to CPGE during the pandemic and during our staffing shortages! You are truly amazing!

LOOKING AHEAD

As we look forward to fiscal year 2023-24, through the support and collaborative leadership of Provost Brown, CPGE is excited for the upcoming opportunities to work with several new leaders, deans, and colleagues on our campus. CPGE, through our Global Campus team, is also working to bring new global students and partners to our campus and programs across the globe. CPGE is also fortunate to have a special opportunity to work with Dr. Sheila Thomas, the former Vice Chancellor and Dean from the CSU Professional and Continuing Education (PaCE) office. She served as a key stakeholder in the development of CPGE’s new vision map and will be working with a collaborative work group to help us develop a strategic plan for expanding our focus in the Industry Connection area of the vision map this year. We also look forward to learning of new course and program ideas from our college partners to align with their areas of expertise and workforce demands.

CPGE will also be focusing on building our team back towards a pre-pandemic level to support the new programs already approved to launch in the current year and in Fall 2024. CPGE is pleased to share that the new Master of Science in Digital Marketing, launching in Fall 2023, has a strong incoming cohort of students. It was made possible through collaborative and focused marketing efforts with our partners in the College of Business Administration (CBA).

CPGE is also excited to announce the upcoming launch of the new Global Access Certificate in Accountancy. This is an academic-credit certificate consisting of 24 units and is scheduled to launch in Spring 2024. The program is designed to support professionals that need a short-term program focused on learning key accounting principles and skills that can be applied immediately, as well as to help potential students with admission requirements for the Master of Science in Accountancy program.

Fall 2024, CPGE will launch the new Master’s in Public Administration (MPA) program. This new online program will help working professionals to obtain their master’s degree while also aligning with careers that support social economic needs and backgrounds from public offices, prisons, social services, nonprofits, and more.

With the CPGE vision map as our guide, we will also focus on the development of a new mission statement for our college in the coming year that aligns with our goals of the three focus areas of CPP+, Industry Connection, and Global Campus.

CPGE serves as the incubator of educational and research opportunities for the campus. Therefore, if you have a potential program idea that aligns with the strengths of CPP, we encourage you to please contact us. We would enjoy an opportunity to discuss your idea and research its potential and market demand.

CPGE is excited and enthusiastic for the foreseeable future as it appears that opportunities for new courses and programs designed for specific industry needs, skill building, and new emerging careers are abundant. We invite you to be a stakeholder and partner with us as we continue to explore and build future opportunities for our students, alumni, industry, and our local and global partners and communities. Collaboratively we can support more students and help them thrive!

THANK YOU DR. RICHARD NAVARRO

This past year we had the honor of having Dr. Richard Navarro serve as the Interim Dean at the College of Professional and Global Education. Through his leadership we were able to continue working towards our goals as outlined in our new vision map, such as joining the American Council on Education’s Internationalization lab, creating new certificate and degree programs, and expanding diversity within the college. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Navarro for his service this past year and would like to wish him the best as he transitions back to his role as a faculty member at Cal Poly Pomona.
