“BEYOND FIT, THE GOWN’S AESTHETIC IS PARAMOUNT.”

For over four generations, Margaret’s the Couture Cleaner has established itself as the premier authority in the care and preservation of fine bridal textiles. Combining old-world craftsmanship with a state-of-the-art facility, they provide a comprehensive suite of services designed to ensure every gown looks flawless on the wedding day and remains a pristine heirloom for decades to come.
The journey to the perfect wedding day often begins with the fit. Margaret’s offers oneon-one consultations with expert seamstresses specializing in complex resizing, restyling, and intricate bustle creation. While all bridal alterations are performed exclusively at their flagship San Diego location, the results speak for themselves, ensuring every bride walks down the aisle with confidence.
For those honoring tradition with a family heirloom, Margaret’s vintage restoration specialists use creative methods to breathe new life into old, damaged, or yellowed gowns, allowing a new generation of brides to wear them with pride.

PRECISION CLEANING AND PRE-WEDDING PREP
Beyond fit, the gown’s aesthetic is paramount. Margaret’s custom-designed facility in San Diego is equipped with specialized soaking tubs and showers specifically engineered to remove challenging soil from delicate fabrics.
THEIR PRE-WEDDING SERVICES ARE EXHAUSTIVE, INCLUDING:
• Cleaning & Pressing: Award-winning care to ensure the gown is camera-ready.
• Logistics: Professional travel packing and site delivery for a stress-free wedding morning.
• Secure Storage: Climate-controlled storage options before the big day to keep gowns safe and out of sight.

“ THIS SERVICE IS BACKED BY A LIFETIME GUARANTEE, ENSURING YOUR GOWN REMAINS A TREASURE FOR GENERATIONS.”

The care of a gown truly begins after the reception. Margaret’s uses a customdesigned, multi-spectrum inspection room to identify “invisible” stains—such as sugar or perspiration—that can cause permanent yellowing if left untreated.
Once expertly cleaned and hand-finished, gowns are preserved using the Legacy Gown Preservation® system. Following museumquality standards, the gown is placed in an acid-free box with acid-free tissue and a cotton muslin liner—a process that conservators estimate can extend the life of a textile for up to 200 years. This service is backed by a lifetime guarantee, ensuring your gown remains a treasure for generations.
While Margaret’s maintains physical boutiques in San Diego, La Jolla, Del Mar, Newport Beach, and Los Angeles, their worldclass expertise is accessible across North America. For those in Southern California, they offer complimentary pick-up and delivery, ensuring that the highest level of couture care is always within reach.

If you’ve lived in La Jolla for a while, you probably don’t even register weddings the way visitors do. They’re just part of the backdrop—like marine layer mornings or the sound of sea lions echoing up from the Cove. Chairs going up on the grass, florals being carried through a gate on Prospect, a bride pausing for a photo with the ocean behind her—it all blends into the rhythm of the place.
But if you stop and reflect, it’s clear the venues themselves anchor weddings here in La Jolla’s identity. Each one highlights a unique aspect of our community.
Take the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. It still carries that old-school, almost hidden feel—like a piece of La Jolla that hasn’t changed much over the years. Weddings there unfold without much fuss. Cocktail hour on the lawn turns into people wandering down to the sand, and before long, it feels less like a formal event and more like one of those perfect beach afternoons we all grew up with.

The La Jolla Shores Hotel is its more open, easygoing counterpart. Most of us have walked past a ceremony there at some point— maybe on a morning beach walk or heading out for sunset. What makes it distinct is its unstructured feel. There’s no real separation between wedding and beach day. Guests drift, kids run toward the water, and by the end of the night, shoes are optional.
In the village, the Grande Colonial Hotel embodies that sense of continuity. It’s the kind of place where you feel the history without it being spelled out. Weddings there tend to linger—long dinners, conversations that stretch into the evening, the ocean quietly sitting in the background through those big windows.

And then there’s the La Valencia Hotel. No matter how often you pass it, it stands out as iconic. Weddings there capture classic La Jolla elegance—terraces, bougainvillea, that unmistakable pink—while staying true to local style.
The La Jolla Country Club offers a completely different perspective. From up there, the coastline feels expansive and calm. Weddings take on a quieter tone—less about the movement of the beach and more about sitting with the view.
“ ”
It’s one of those places where people actually pause mid-conversation to look
out over the bluffs.
More recently, the Orli La Jolla has become part of the mix. It’s smaller, more intimate, and feels intentionally tucked into the village. The courtyard setting gives weddings a kind of closeness you don’t always find elsewhere—less spectacle, more connection.
“ ”
But what really rounds out La Jolla’s wedding scene are the places we don’t always think of as “venues” first.
The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, for example, brings a completely different energy. Set right along the coastline, it blends art, architecture, and ocean views in a way that feels very La Jolla. Weddings there tend to feel modern and intentional—clean lines, open space, and that constant visual dialogue between the Pacific and the pieces inside.

Then there’s the Darlington House, which longtime locals know for its gardens and Spanish-style charm. It’s tucked just enough off the main streets that weddings there feel private, almost like you’ve stepped into a different era. The courtyards, tiled walkways, and greenery give it a warmth that’s hard to replicate.
The La Jolla Cove Rooftop offers something else entirely—a vantage point most of us forget exists until we’re up there. Looking out over the Cove from above, with the village just behind you, it captures both sides of La Jolla at once. It’s intimate, but with a view that still feels expansive.
Out by the university, the Martin Johnson House at UC San Diego has its own following. It’s quieter out there, a little removed from the village, with eucalyptus trees and wide ocean views. Weddings feel grounded, almost retreatlike, which is part of the appeal.
The La Jolla Woman’s Club is another favorite that locals tend to appreciate more over time. Designed by Irving Gill, it has that clean, understated architectural beauty that doesn’t try to compete with the surroundings. Weddings there feel simple in the best way— focused, thoughtful, and connected to the history of the community.

Of course, you can’t talk about La Jolla weddings without mentioning the Wedding Bowl. If you’ve ever walked past and seen a ceremony in progress, you know how uniquely public and personal it feels at the same time. The ocean is right there, the cliffs frame everything, and yet life goes on around it—people walking dogs, tourists stopping to watch. It’s about as purely La Jolla as it gets. And then there’s the Scripps Seaside Forum. Clean, modern, and right on the sand, it captures that balance between design and nature. The glass, the lines, the openness—it all pulls your focus straight to the ocean. Weddings there feel contemporary but still deeply tied to the coastline.
“
When
you step back and look at all of these places together, what stands out isn’t just how beautiful they are—it’s how different they are from one another.
”
When you step back and look at all of these places together, what stands out isn’t just how beautiful they are—t’s how different they are from one another. Each one reflects a version of La Jolla we all recognize.
And that’s probably why weddings here don’t feel like they’re happening in La Jolla so much as of it.
Because for those of us who live here, these aren’t just venues. They’re part of our routines, our memories, our daily routes. So when a wedding happens, it doesn’t feel like a production brought in from the outside.
It just feels like another chapter being added to a place we already know by heart.

THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT SEEING SAN DIEGO FROM THE WATER THAT CHANGES YOUR PERSPECTIVE.
We all live here for the coastline, the ocean air, and those sunsets that make you stop whatever you’re doing and look west. Most of us experience it from land—walking the Cove, sitting on a patio in the Village, or watching the waves roll in at Windansea. But recently I was reminded there’s another side of San Diego that many of us don’t experience very often: the quiet beauty of the bay.
AND THE BEST WAY TO SEE IT MIGHT JUST BE WITH SAIL RIVIERA.
If you haven’t heard of Sail Riviera yet, you’re not alone. It’s one of those experiences people tend to discover through a friend who says something like, “You have to try this. It’s amazing.”

Tucked into San Diego’s harbor scene, Sail Riviera isn’t a big, commercial charter operation with crowds and loud music. It’s much more personal than that. Private sails, small groups, and an atmosphere that feels relaxed the moment you step aboard.
It’s immediately apparent that the owner, Paul Barnett, has a genuine passion for sailing. And when someone builds an experience around something they truly care about, it shows. The sails themselves are simple in the best possible way. Think sunset cruises with champagne chilled and ready, comfortable seating where you can actually talk with your friends, and music soft enough that you still hear the wind and the water. Nothing overdone, nothing flashy— just thoughtful details that make the whole evening feel effortless.
For those of us who live in La Jolla and are used to beautiful settings, that balance is important.
The boat itself has a quiet elegance. Sleek lines, polished finishes, and plenty of space to relax without feeling crowded. Once you’re out on the bay, the pace of the day naturally slows down. Conversations stretch a little longer. Phones tend to stay in pockets.
And the breeze off the water replaces the background noise of traffic and notifications.
that make you stop whatever you’re doing and look west. “ “
We all live here for the coastline, the ocean air, and those sunsets
And then, of course, there’s sunset. If you’ve ever watched the sun go down over San Diego Bay from a sailboat, you know it’s something special. The skyline catches the light and glows in shades of gold and amber. The sky starts shifting into layers of peach, pink, and lavender as the lights of the city slowly come on.
It’s one of those moments where everyone on board goes quiet for a minute and just takes it in.
Not surprisingly, Sail Riviera has become a favorite for celebrations. Anniversaries, proposals, birthdays—those moments when you want to do something memorable but still relaxed. But honestly, it’s just as perfect for something simpler, like taking visiting friends out for an evening they won’t forget.
IT’S FUNNY HOW RESTORATIVE THE OCEAN CAN BE WHEN YOU’RE OUT ON IT INSTEAD OF JUST LOOKING AT IT FROM SHORE.
San Diego Bay has its own kind of beauty. Sailboats drift past the downtown skyline. The curve of the Coronado Bridge rises gracefully in the distance. Naval ships line the harbor, and every now and then a sea lion pops up nearby while pelicans skim just above the water.
OR EVEN JUST GIVING YOURSELF A MIDWEEK RESET.
What makes Sail Riviera stand out isn’t flashy luxury. It’s the kind of luxury that feels easy and natural. You step aboard and immediately feel welcomed. The hosting is attentive but never intrusive. And the person guiding the sail clearly loves being out on the water and sharing that experience with others.

In a coastal community like ours, boats are everywhere. But there’s a real difference between simply being on the water and actually experiencing it. Sail Riviera leans into that difference. The whole experience encourages you to slow down, breathe deeply, and enjoy the rhythm of the bay.
For couples, it’s incredibly romantic. For a small group of friends, it becomes the kind of evening you end up talking about long afterward. Even for families with older kids, it’s a rare chance to unplug and just be together for a few hours.
We live in one of the most beautiful places in Southern California. But sometimes we move through it so quickly that we forget to really take it in. A few hours sailing across the bay has a way of reminding you.
If you’re ever looking for a way to celebrate something—or honestly just want to do something different for an evening—this is one of those experiences that’s absolutely worth trying.
To learn more or plan a private sail, visit sailrivierasandiego.com and consider seeing San Diego from a different perspective: out on the water, with the skyline glowing, the sun setting behind Coronado, and the whole evening unfolding at its own perfect pace.

DID YOU KNOW THAT ONE OF LA JOLLA’S MOST SCENIC COASTAL AREAS WAS ONCE A BUSTLING MILITARY BASE BUILT FOR WAR?
Long before hikers, dog walkers, and sunset watchers explored the bluffs above the Pacific, Camp Callan served as a vital piece of America’s coastal defense system during World War II. Established in 1941, the camp swiftly turned the quiet La Jolla coastline into a high-alert training ground for the U.S. Army’s Coast Artillery Corps. At its peak, Camp Callan housed thousands of soldiers preparing for the very real possibility of enemy attack along the Southern California coast. Massive gun batteries were positioned along the bluffs, scanning the horizon for threats that, fortunately, never came. Where locals now pause to admire the ocean view, soldiers once stood watch with urgency and purpose.
DID YOU KNOW YOU MAY HAVE ALREADY WALKED RIGHT THROUGH IT WITHOUT REALIZING?
Today, much of Camp Callan’s former footprint blends seamlessly into everyday La Jolla life. Portions of the land now sit within Torrey Pines City Park and the campus of the University of California, San Diego. The transformation is so complete that unless you know what to look for, the military past is easy to miss. But it’s still there—hidden in fragments.
Weathered concrete slabs, faint building outlines, and scattered remnants occasionally peek through the brush. These are the subtle clues left behind by a camp that once operated with speed and intensity. For those in the know,
Camp Callan served as a vital piece of America’s coastal defense system during World War II “ “
spotting these traces can feel like uncovering a secret layer of La Jolla’s identity.
DID YOU KNOW CAMP CALLAN HELPED SHAPE THE LA JOLLA WE KNOW TODAY?
When the war ended in 1945, the camp was decommissioned almost as quickly as it was built. Rather than being redeveloped into dense housing or commercial space, much of the land remained open. This decision would later play a key role in the expansion of UC San Diego and the preservation of nearby natural areas.
In a way, Camp Callan’s temporary presence created a lasting impact. The same wide-open spaces chosen for their strategic

military value would go on to support education, recreation, and the relaxed coastal lifestyle that defines La Jolla today.
DID YOU KNOW THE CONTRAST BETWEEN PAST AND PRESENT IS PART OF WHAT MAKES IT SO SPECIAL?
It’s hard to imagine that the peaceful bluffs near La Jolla Cove were once filled with the sounds of drills, machinery, and marching troops. Today, those sounds have been replaced by crashing waves, seabirds, and the occasional laughter of families enjoying the coastline.
For locals, Camp Callan is more than a forgotten military site. It’s a reminder that La Jolla’s beauty has always been paired with significance. “ “
But on a quiet morning, when the marine layer rolls in, and the landscape feels still, you might catch a glimpse of the past. The terrain hasn’t changed all that much—it’s the purpose that has.
For locals, Camp Callan is more than a forgotten military site. It’s a reminder that La Jolla’s beauty has always been paired with significance. And sometimes, the most interesting stories aren’t the ones in plain sight— they’re the ones just beneath your feet.

If you’ve lived in La Jolla long enough, you come to value the local businesses that feel woven into the fabric of daily life. One of those is Cheer Concierge Home Health Care, right here in Bird Rock. This isn’t a big, impersonal operation headquartered somewhere far away. Cheer is our neighbor. That is evident in the way they care for La Jolla families.
Take Anne, 98 years young, who has always loved watching the sun melt into the horizon at La Jolla Shores. After a series of health setbacks left her receiving bed-level care, she slowly began to lose the motivation to do the very thing that once lit her up. Her care provider, Cindy, noticed the change immediately. Without being asked, she began recording the sunsets at the Shores so Anne could watch them from bed. Those simple videos were more than scenery — they were a reminder of who she was. Before long, Anne found the determination to get up again, returning to the shoreline she loved and reclaiming a piece of herself.
That kind of attentiveness is simply how Cheer operates. They don’t just address a diagnosis; they care for the whole person. Another La Jollan, Luis, found himself temporarily immobile after a difficult
surgery. What he missed most wasn’t the bustle of town — it was tending the garden at his own home. Anyone who has put time into a La Jolla garden understands that it’s personal. His care provider, Carla, arranged for a Hoyer lift so she could safely transfer him into his wheelchair and guide him back outside. Among his greenery and flowers, something shifted. Being in his garden restored not only his routine but also his sense of identity.
Cheer’s founder and CEO, Brooke Martindale, built the company around a simple but powerful question: How would I want my own loved one cared for? In the early years, she kept her phone by her side at all hours, personally fielding late-night calls and navigating complex situations. That mindset of preparation and responsibility never faded. When the pandemic arrived, her home care company was ready, securing protective equipment quickly so local seniors could continue receiving uninterrupted care in their homes.
What sets Cheer apart is its concierge approach. The team is intentional about matching care providers and clients whose personalities and strengths complement one another. It’s not just about

credentials, though their caregivers are trained to support complex conditions such as Parkinson’s, ALS, and dementia-related illnesses. It’s about connection. Often, the relationship becomes mutually enriching: clients share wisdom and life experience, while caregivers provide a steady hand and nurses their medical expertise, both never forgetting the importance of compassionate support.
“How would I want my own loved one cared for?”
CEO Brooke Martindale
For many families, the hardest season comes when the parent who was once the steady anchor begins to need help. That role reversal can feel delicate. But here in La Jolla, with the right support system, it doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. With thoughtful, relationship-centered care, loved ones can continue to flourish — safely, comfortably, and with dignity — in the homes and neighborhoods they cherish.
That’s what Cheer Concierge Home Health Care offers our community: not just around-the-clock assistance, but reassurance. The kind that lets La Jollans take care of their own.
Connect with a local Cheer Care Advisor for a complimentary consultation by calling 858-868-5500 or visiting their website at www.cheerhomecare.com

Tucked within the historic Grande Colonial Hotel, the MICHELIN-recognized NINE-TEN Restaurant has long been a cornerstone of La Jolla’s dining scene. The dining experience is elevated but inviting, whether enjoying an intimate dinner, a leisurely brunch, or a celebratory evening paired with selections from the restaurant’s award-winning wine program. Subtle ocean views, artful interiors, and polished service create a setting that feels both sophisticated and comfortably familiar.

Growing Together begins not with a single gathering, but with a sustained civic vision — one shaped by the La Jolla Historical Society’s commitment to strengthening the role arts and culture play in the daily life of the community.
Conceived as a six-part series of free public events unfolding across 2026, the initiative is designed to draw families more deeply into La Jolla’s creative ecosystem while reinforcing the village’s identity as one of Southern California’s most concentrated cultural corridors. Where the Historical Society has long safeguarded the region’s architectural and social heritage, Growing Together signals an expansion of that mission — transforming preservation into active cultural participation.
Developed in collaboration with leading local partners, including the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, and the Murals of La Jolla Program, the series creates a framework through which institutions that often operate independently can co-produce shared, accessible experiences.
The opening program in March establishes that foundation, expanding the Historical Society’s Family Day into a broader, partnershipdriven gathering that introduces families to hands-on art-making, performance, and community engagement within the gardens of Wisteria Cottage.
But the initiative’s long-term impact lies in what follows. On May 3, the focus shifts outward into the public art landscape through collaboration with the Murals of La Jolla Program. Families will be invited to experience the village’s internationally recognized mural collection not simply as passersby, but as active participants — engaging with the stories, artists, and urban context that shape the installations.
Summer introduces a youth-centered dimension through two partnership events with the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, integrated into its Teen Art Fridays programming on June 5 and again on August 21. These gatherings are designed to engage older students and emerging young artists, offering space for creative exploration, mentorship, and peer exchange.

As the series moves into early fall, collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego will anchor a September program, further deepening access to contemporary art practice through exhibitions and participatory learning experiences.
The initiative will conclude on November 8 with a return partnership alongside the Murals of La Jolla Program — bringing the series full circle through another exploration of public art and its accessibility beyond traditional gallery settings.
Taken together, the six events form a cultural arc that moves across disciplines, age groups, and civic spaces — from historic gardens to museum galleries, from teen studios to open-air mural corridors.
What distinguishes Growing Together is not any single program element, but the infrastructure it builds between organizations and audiences. By convening institutions under a shared framework, the Historical Society positions itself as a cultural catalyst — aligning preservation, education, and participation into one cohesive initiative.
As Executive Director Lauren Lochart describes it:
“Growing Together is about opening doors wider — ensuring families feel invited into La Jolla’s cultural spaces, not just as visitors, but as participants helping shape the community’s creative future.”
The resonance of the series will extend beyond the events themselves. La Jolla Living will follow the initiative as it unfolds throughout the year, documenting each collaboration and highlighting the partnerships and community impact emerging from the program.
In that way, Growing Together operates on multiple levels — as public programming, institutional collaboration, and an evolving narrative of cultural engagement.
“Growing Together is about opening doors wider — ensuring families feel invited into La Jolla’s cultural spaces, not just as visitors, but as participants helping shape the community’s creative future.”
And as the events progress from spring through fall, the initiative will trace a living portrait of La Jolla’s artistic identity — one shaped not only by its institutions, but by the families and individuals stepping forward to experience, contribute to, and ultimately grow the cultural life of the community together.

Tucked into a quiet corner of the neighborhood, The Chateau isn’t just a place to live—it’s a place to belong.

On any given morning, the day begins with a gentle rhythm. Sunlight filters through wide windows as a small group gathers for stretch and balance class, guided by the talented Claudia, whose warmth and easy encouragement set the tone for the day. She knows everyone by name, and her presence alone seems to lift the room. Laughter bubbles up easily here—especially when someone jokes about touching their toes “back in 1972.” It’s the kind of laughter that feels familiar, like it’s been shared for years.
That sense of familiarity is what defines life at The Chateau. From the moment a new resident arrives, they’re welcomed not as a newcomer, but as a neighbor. Within days, they’re invited to coffee circles, card games, and afternoon socials where stories are exchanged as freely as smiles.
The programs at The Chateau are thoughtfully designed, but they never feel structured in a rigid way. Instead, they create opportunities— little openings in the day where friendships can grow. There’s the art studio, where watercolor classes turn into conversations about grandchildren and travel memories. There’s the book club, where discussions about plot twists often drift into reflections on life itself. And then there’s the ever-popular game night, where a simple round of bingo or cards can spark a room full of cheers and playful competition.
For those who enjoy staying active, The Chateau offers walking groups, light fitness classes, and more advanced exercise options, including circuit training. It’s not unusual to see residents encouraging one another as they try something new, building both strength and confidence along the way. Claudia is often there too, cheering everyone on and reminding them that it’s never too late to stay active and keep moving.
Meals are another cornerstone of life here. The dining room hums with conversation, not just during special occasions but every single day. Tables fill with familiar faces, and over time, those shared meals become rituals—places where people check in on one another, celebrate birthdays, and notice when someone might need an extra word of encouragement.
But what truly sets The Chateau apart isn’t just the variety of programs—it’s the way those programs bring people together. It’s the quiet understanding that companionship matters just as much as care. Staff members play a key role in this, not only organizing activities but taking the time to connect, listen, and gently introduce residents to one another. They know that sometimes, all it takes is one shared interest to spark a lasting friendship.
And those friendships are real. They’re the kind that show up early to save a seat, that knock on doors to make sure someone doesn’t miss an outing, that celebrate milestones both big and small. They’re built over cups of coffee, walks in the garden, and countless small moments that, together, create something meaningful.
At The Chateau, growing older doesn’t mean growing isolated. It means stepping into a community where connection is part of everyday life—where neighbors become friends, and friends become a support system that feels, in every sense, like home.
BY PETER GOTFREDSON

For Las Patronas, Paint Out Day is the creative heartbeat behind the Jewel Ball—a cherished tradition where members and their husbands come together to design and build the stunning visual elements that define the evening. It’s a day of collaboration, craftsmanship, and community, where imagination is transformed into the immersive world guests experience on the big night.
By the time Paint Out Day arrives, there’s already a quiet electricity humming through The Warehouse—an unspoken understanding that something extraordinary is about to take shape. Long tables appear, paint cans stack in colorful towers, and the massive wooden panels—blank and full of possibility—lean patiently against the walls, waiting for their transformation.
The morning begins with coffee and laughter as members of Las Patronas gather, sleeves rolled and hair tied back, ready to bring this year’s Jewel Ball theme to life. Soon after, husbands arrive— some seasoned veterans of Paint Out Day, others enthusiastic first-timers—each stepping into a rhythm that feels both communal and creative. There’s something disarming about the scene: tuxedo-wearing gala-goers turned painters for the day, trading formal attire for paint-splattered clothes and well-worn sneakers.

The first brushstrokes are always the boldest. Large swaths of color stretch across the panels as the designs begin to emerge— arches, skylines, florals, fantasy landscapes— each one carefully sketched, then filled in with precision and care. Ladders creak, music plays, and instructions are passed across the room in a blend of focus and fun. Someone inevitably
misplaces a brush, someone else mixes the perfect shade, and before long, the entire space smells faintly of paint and possibility.
BUT PAINT OUT DAY IS JUST ONE LAYER OF THE MAGIC.
BECAUSE EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT’S COMING.
“ “
It’s about the camaraderie built over shared effort, the laughter echoing through late nights, and the pride that comes from creating something breathtaking together.
As the sun dips below the horizon, the real marathon begins. Nights at The Warehouse stretch long and lively, fueled by takeout dinners, shared stories, and a collective determination to get everything just right. While some continue refining the painted panels, others shift their focus to the intricate details that will ultimately define the evening—centerpieces, props, lighting elements, and decorative accents that, piece by piece, build an immersive world.
There’s a kind of choreography to it all. One group measures and cuts fabric, another assembles structures, while a third tests how light will bounce off a surface or shimmer through a design. It’s meticulous work, but it never feels tedious. Every task, no matter how small, carries the weight of the final reveal.
In a relatively short time, these same pieces—currently scattered across tables and floors—will be transported and installed at the Beach and Tennis Club. There, under a canopy of stars and anticipation, the tennis courts will undergo a transformation so complete it borders on cinematic. What was once a familiar space will become something entirely new: a glamorous, immersive setting that feels lifted straight from a Hollywood set.
AND THAT’S THE MAGIC OF PAINT OUT DAY.
It’s not just about painting panels or assembling decorations. It’s about the camaraderie built over shared effort, the laughter echoing through late nights, and the pride that comes from creating something breathtaking together. By the time the final brush is cleaned and the last piece is packed, there’s a quiet satisfaction in knowing that every detail—every stroke, every stitch—will soon play its part in an unforgettable evening.

At The Bishop’s School, a weeklong partnership with Lucky Duck Foundation became a defining expression of the school’s commitment to service, as Bishop’s students led, organized, and participated in what was known across campus as “Lucky Ducklings Week.” From start to finish, The Bishop’s School community embraced the initiative as both an educational experience and a call to action.
Spearheaded by The Bishop’s School Lucky Ducklings Committee, the week brought students, faculty, and families together to better understand and respond to the realities of hunger and homelessness in San Diego. At the heart of The Bishop’s School’s effort was a campus-wide canned food drive benefiting Feeding San Diego. Students focused on collecting high-need items such as readyto-eat meals, canned proteins, peanut butter, and cooking essentials. By the end of the week, The Bishop’s School community had collected roughly 858 pounds of food, the equivalent of roughly 715 meals. The Bishop’s School’s sixth- and tenth-grade classes stood out for their enthusiasm and generosity, leading the campus in contributions and setting the tone for the broader effort.

Education was a cornerstone of school’s approach. Early in the week, Bishop’s students encountered thought-provoking facts about hunger and homelessness posted throughout the campus. These daily reminders encouraged Bishop’s students to reflect on the challenges facing their neighbors and to consider their role in addressing them.
That reflection turned into action through The Bishop’s School’s “Chain of Commitments,” an interactive lunchtime initiative that invited students to engage more deeply. After completing a short quiz, students responded to prompts about what they had learned, how they planned to apply it, and what they felt grateful for. Each answer became a link in a growing chain displayed across The Bishop’s School campus—an evolving symbol of the students’ awareness, empathy, and shared commitment.
Service projects across the school further demonstrated the breadth of student involvement. Bishop’s sixth- and tenth-grade students created more than 200 Valentine’s Day cards to accompany care packages, while seventh graders assembled food and water bags for distribution. Bishop’s eighth graders contributed by crafting no-sew blankets, providing warmth and comfort to those in need. In addition, The Bishop’s School Period Poverty Project Club packed more than 6,000 hygiene products for unhoused women, addressing a critical need with compassion and care.
The week culminated in a school-wide gathering where students heard directly from community leaders, including representatives from Feeding San Diego and the Lucky Duck Foundation. Their remarks deepened The Bishop’s School community’s understanding of the systemic challenges surrounding homelessness, particularly among vulnerable youth populations.
Ultimately, Lucky Ducklings Week was more than a service project— it reflected The Bishop’s School’s identity. Through education, generosity, and hands-on action, Bishop’s students demonstrated how a school community can come together to create meaningful, lasting impact.

For longtime residents, the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance feels less like an event and more like a ritual, one that signals the arrival of spring and invites the community to slow down and savor beauty in its most refined form. It’s a day when familiar faces gather, conversations flow easily, and history arrives not in textbooks, but gleaming quietly on four wheels.
Since its founding in 2005, the Concours has grown into a signature tradition, drawing extraordinary automobiles from private collections around the world while remaining unmistakably local in spirit. What makes it special isn’t only the rarity of the cars, but the way they are woven into the social and cultural rhythm of La Jolla. This is elegance without pretension, where philanthropy, design, and community meet.
Strolling through the exhibition feels like flipping through a beautifully curated magazine spread, except every image is real and every detail has a story. A pre-war Packard recalls a time when cars were built slowly and
deliberately, with craftsmanship that mirrored fine furniture or jewelry. Nearby, a postwar European sports car embodies optimism and reinvention, shaped by designers who believed that speed and beauty could coexist.
Many of the automobiles showcased have lived full, fascinating lives. Some raced along winding European roads in legendary competitions. Others once belonged to industrialists, movie stars, or visionary engineers. At the Concours, these stories are shared casually between neighbors, collectors, and curious onlookers, turning history into conversation rather than lecture.
“
“ There is an unspoken understanding here: beauty matters. So does care.
The setting elevates the experience. Against manicured lawns and coastal light, the cars feel perfectly at home, as though La Jolla itself were part of the design. There is an unspoken understanding here: beauty matters. So does care. That philosophy extends beyond the automobiles to the event’s charitable mission, which has raised millions of dollars
over the years for San Diego–based causes. Giving back is not an add-on; it’s an integral part of one’s identity.
The Concours is also generational. Children point excitedly at polished headlights while parents explain why a car has wooden wheels or leather straps. Teenagers discover that innovation didn’t begin with screens. Longtime residents recognize returning favorites and look forward to what new story might appear next year.
Recent editions have explored conversations about sustainability and preservation, acknowledging that honoring the past also requires thoughtful consideration of the future. It’s a gentle reminder that elegance evolves, but intention endures.
As the afternoon winds down and the cars prepare to leave, the lawn slowly returns to normal. Yet the feeling lingers—a shared appreciation for craftsmanship, connection, and the pleasure of taking one beautiful day seriously. In La Jolla, the Concours d’Elegance isn’t just something to attend. It’s something to look forward to, year after year.
For those hoping to experience the Concours firsthand this year, tickets are available through the official La Jolla Concours d’Elegance website. The main event takes place on Sunday, April 26, 2026, when the full collection of automobiles is on display, along with music, tastings, and the relaxed social atmosphere the event is known for. Additional events are held throughout the weekend, and both general admission and a limited number of VIP tickets are offered. Tickets tend to sell out as the date approaches, so planning ahead is encouraged.

1. 1934 PACKARD 1101
A luxury pre-war Packard originally built for the President of Uruguay, now restored and a standout at the show.
2. 1903 OLDSMOBILE “THE SPIRIT OF SAN DIEGO”
A hometown historic veteran car that even participated in the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.
3. 1948 JAGUAR MARK IV DROPHEAD COUPE
One of fewer than 400 produced, complete with original heritage documentation.
4. 1954 KAISER DARRIN
A rare American sports car with a fiberglass body and unique sliding pocket doors.
5. 1938 LINCOLN MODEL K TWELVE
A one-of-a-kind Judkins body car built for Edsel Ford.
6. 1939 DELAHAYE T-165 V-12 “WORLD’S FAIR”
One of only two built, chosen by the French government for the 1939 New York World’s Fair.
7. 1963 CHEVROLET CORVETTE STING RAY
Potentially the last 1963 split-window Fuelie built in Ermine White, a significant piece of American sports car history.
8. 1972 PORSCHE 914-6
A California original and enthusiast favorite, restored to collector-grade condition.
9. 1969 DE TOMASO MANGUSTA
A rare Italian mid-engine sports car, designed to rival the Cobra, with distinctive styling.
10. 1955 MERCEDES-BENZ 300 SL GULLWING
One of the most iconic cars ever made; this stunning example won Best in Show at a recent Concours.

If you haven’t ducked into Parisien Gourmandises yet, consider this your sign. It isn’t new, flashy, or sitting right on Girard with a line out the door. Instead, it quietly won “Best Pastries in Town,” and somehow, that still feels like a local secret.
Very La Jolla, right? The twist—because there is one—is that Parisien Gourmandises isn’t a standalone patisserie. It lives inside The Floral Palette, a charming gift boutique you might have wandered into a dozen times without realizing what’s tucked inside. You could walk in thinking you’re browsing for a last-minute hostess gift or a thoughtful bouquet, and walk out with a perfectly crafted croissant that changes your entire afternoon. It’s the kind of place you stumble upon once, and then immediately start bringing people back to, half to share and half to prove you discovered it first.
The “Best Pastries in Town” challenge, which drew entries from throughout La Jolla, wasn’t exactly a casual neighborhood bake-off. It was serious competition—beloved local bakeries, neighborhood favorites, the spots people swear by. And yet, tucked inside its unassuming space on Girard, Parisien Gourmandises managed to outshine them all.
At the heart of it all is Annie Benaroch, whose presence feels as thoughtful as the pastries themselves. There’s a quiet confidence in what she’s created—no need for flash, just a commitment to doing things exceptionally well. You can sense it in the way everything is presented, in the consistency, and in the details that regulars have come to count on.
Everything in the case feels intentional. The croissants are golden, layered, and impossibly airy. The fruit tarts taste like they were assembled that morning (because they were). The éclairs strike that perfect balance—refined without being overly sweet. And for many locals, there’s another detail that makes this spot stand out: the pastries are certified kosher, adding an extra layer of care and consideration that broadens who can fully enjoy what’s being made here.
And maybe that’s part of why locals have loved it long before the award. It fits into the rhythm of La Jolla life. You stop in after a morning walk. You grab something before heading to the beach. You pick up a box when friends are coming over, knowing it’ll spark conversation the second it’s opened.
Winning the title hasn’t changed the feel of the place—at least not yet. There’s no over-the-top signage or sudden reinvention. If anything, it’s just given regulars a quiet sense of validation. Of course,

...It quietly won “Best Pastries in Town,” and somehow, that still feels like a local secret...
they won. Of course, this small spot inside a shop serves some of the best pastries around.
But if you go now, you might notice a few more curious faces. A few more people wandering into The Floral Palette, following the buzz. And you’ll probably catch that moment when they realize what they’ve found—somewhere between their first glance at the pastry case and their first bite.
So yes, Parisien Gourmandises is officially “the best.” But for those who’ve been slipping in and out of that tucked-away space for a while now, it’s just nice to see the rest of the world catching up.
