SELLING INNOVATION As Blanco UK enters the digital arena, the stage is set for the kitchen manufacturer’s new online offering…

W

ith over 90 years of experience in the kitchen industry, Blanco has evolved to become a leading manufacturer of kitchen sinks, taps, hobs and hoods. And, as it celebrates selling over 50 million sinks worldwide, it’s UK subsidiary is leading the pack with new innovations, an exclusive product portfolio and a strategic marketing plan that shows the company’s commitment to the British market. “Blanco’s heritage is based on quality and innovation,” begins Ann-Marie Jones,

Marketing Manager at Blanco UK. “We strive to be the best in materials, design and originality. Competition in this sector is fierce so, to stay ahead, we’re continually introducing new concepts to our dealers that set us apart from the rest.” As Blanco UK’s product portfolio continues to increase, thanks to the recent introduction of the multi-level Etagon sink series and continual investment in groundbreaking materials such as the awardwinning Silgranit® and Zerox, the company is

fast becoming a leader in its field and a ‘go to’ manufacturer for multi-purpose kitchen products. However, as the industry enters the digital age, Blanco UK’s online offering is changing. Ann-Marie explains, “We’ve listened to our customers and analysed the marketplace in order to create a new online offering. Our new website is currently in its first stage of development but, as the industry changes and our product ranges become more prominent in the UK market, we’re creating a multi-functional reference point that can help our dealers sell Blanco UK’s product ranges.” As well as continuing to be informative for the company’s b2b customers, the new website includes a new dealer portal that offers customers a wealth of information at their fingertips. Ann-Marie adds, “It has been designed to allow dealers to become more self-sufficient. As the web development

continues and we enter stage-two of our plans, trade customers will be able to access their own account information, whilst learning about the latest product launches, events and promotions.” In order to help dealers further, Blanco UK is also focusing on the end-users. “For retailers, selling to an end-user is simpler if you’re selling a recognisable brand. This is why we’re starting a fully-focussed consumer PR and advertising campaign that has been designed to create positive recognition with the brand. We want Blanco UK to be an aspirational brand. We want to increase brand awareness and educate the end user on our product ranges and the benefits associated with them. To do this, we will be moving into a new digital arena and working on several media platforms, including social media, to showcase our products in a new light. We’re confident this fresh and intuitive

approach to promoting our products will help our dealers greatly.” To coincide with this, Blanco UK is investing heavily in trade events and award ceremonies. “We haven’t focused on this area before but as our product range continues to showcase Blanco UK’s ability to create advanced kitchen products and pioneering materials, it seems like the right time for us. We are unique in terms of our product’s functionality and the materials we use and we want to tell the industry about them. Blanco Germany has won endless awards for its product ranges and unique innovations, so now we need to showcase these to the UK market. This, along with our presence at KBB Birmingham in 2018, will mark the beginning of a new era for Blanco, where our online presence will be key to our continual success.” Blanco UK will also be running its own inhouse dealer event in St Albans on the 6th July.

Thanks to a team of in-house designers and engineers, Perrin & Rowe can create a wide range of designs for the retail and commercial sector.

SELLING A STORY With strong roots to the UK and British manufacturing in its blood, Perrin & Rowe is investing in the future…

P

errin & Rowe has come a long way since its founders, Bob Perrin and Greg Rowe, began manufacturing brassware components in their shed in 1978. The Essex-based company, which is now a global player in the brassware market, has successfully built on its English heritage and, thanks to the revolutionary Triflow concept that saw the company propel to new heights in the 90s, it has continued to embrace British manufacturing and homed local talent. Whilst it’s manufacturing plants are still based in UK – one in Essex and two in the midlands – the company is going through a period of change. “Over the last seven years, there has been a shift in the culture of our business,” begins David Cole, Sales Director at Perrin & Rowe. “Manufacturing has always been our business. Now, whilst it still remains at our core and we continue to take advantage of the fantastic skill sets

availed to us in the UK, we have evolved to become a sales and marketing business in order to facilitate and enhance what we do. Thanks to this change, we’re finding countries such as America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are selling into the story of our brand and export sales are strong. Thanks to our heritage and traditional manufacturing techniques, our distributors are creating a story of craftsmanship that plays on who we are as a business and the products we produce. It demands a premium for the product.” Commercial projects are also important to the company. “They’ve been a part of our business for a long time and as the popularity of the brand has grown, we’ve become a go-to bathroom brand in the commercial and hospitality sector. We’ve worked on some amazing developments including Sandy Land in Barbados and the Corinthia hotel in London, some projects

have seen us create a fully bespoke range for the developers. With an in-house design team, technical engineers, tool room and manufacturing facilities all under one roof, the company can create an initial concept and see it though the entire production stage onsite. David explains, “We sell, we market, we manufacture and assemble. A key aspect for us is the design team and the link with the tool room and our prototype facilities. A developer can make their project completely unique and we work with architects and designers to create the exact product they are looking for. It’s a great selling point that really highlights our capabilities.” This ethos blends with the company’s retail offering too. David adds, “Many of our retail taps are customisable to an extent with our wide range of finishes and mounting options. This is important to us and its an area we will continue to push into 2017.” With the aim to create a lifestyle brand that can see them work more fluidly between trade and consumer markets, the company is investing heavily in a new website which is set to launch at the end of the year. “We’re

creating a site that matches the quality of our products and creating a better journey for our customers. It will tell the Perrin & Rowe story from the very beginning and focus on the company’s ongoing philosophy and reputation in the industry. This will work in tandem with social media platforms, strategic marketing and PR.” This culture change has also resulted in Perrin and Rowe’s Brand Ambassadors taking to the road. “They’re not going out there to simply sell our product into as many showrooms as they can,” explains David. “Their job is to sell the brand into to the right retailer. Ones that will do the brand justice. We want retailers to know who we are, what we do and how we do it.” As well as relaying this message to its retailers, Brand Ambassadors are actively involved in product selection and are on-hand to advise retailers on the best way to do their product justice. David adds, “We’re investing in our retailers so we’d like our retailers to invest in us by creating the very best displays. Consumers need to be able to see and feel the product in order to understand the

difference in our products. This is incredibility important to us.” Additional POS, sample boards, high end literature and window stickers are also available. Going forward, the company will be launching a number of new products this year, including the Celeste hot tap and a variety of traditional and contemporary designs for the kitchen and bathroom. “Our portfolio is continually adapting to trends and the marketplace. We will be launching several new products and also focusing on our contemporary offering. It’s an interesting time for us but we know we want to continue manufacturing in the UK. It’s easier than ever to manufacturer in Europe or china but for us, we want to commit to British manufacturing. Doing what we know produces the best possible product. This allows us to move forward and to develop as a business. Our success proves that a relatively small, traditional UK manufacturer can appeal to the masses. It’s our turn to stand up and show the market exactly what we can do.” You can next see Perrin & Rowe at Sleep 2017 and KBB Birmingham 2018.

Ron Blount

HOTTING UP THE MARKET K&B Journal talks to I Ron Blount about this latest project and the launch of the 3-in-1 HotSpot Titanium tap…

Adrianna tap in Chrome

Alessio tap in stainless steel

t was only last year that KBB veteran, Ron Blount, stepped down as Managing Director of Blanco UK after 25 years of service. But, it seems that for Ron, the idea of retirement couldn’t be further from his mind, as he begins a new chapter working alongside heating systems specialist, Inventum, to launch a new, state-of-the-art, 3-in-1 tap to the UK. “I was never going to retire,” explains Ron. The ‘r’ word is synonymous with going out to pastures and chewing the cud. That simply isn’t me. When I left Blanco, I was looking for a project that I could really get stuck into. Launching the 3-in-1 HotSpot Titanium tap was the kind of challenge I was looking for and I had to be a part of it.” Made in the Netherlands and derived from 100 years of producing boiler systems, Inventum’s innovative tap – which has a worldwide patent on its unique design - has been created using Titanium. It is completely bio-compatible, resistant to corrosion, light and antibacterial. And, unlike other premium models, a water filter - to remove limescale & any untoward taste – is integral to this new system and included in the nett price.

Combining innovation, the 3-in-1 appliance boasts the added benefits of sustainability and safety. Unique to the HotSpot Titanium is a patented safety system, Intelliprotect, with an easy-to-operate electronic touch control, which allows the user to select from 3 safety levels. Optional hands-free operation for continuous boiling water, for cleaning or pan filling, is also possible. Available in Chrome and Stainless Steel effect with either a swan or drop neck, the new HotSpot Titanium is offered as a 3-in-1 tap (hot, cold & boiling) or a boiling water only option. All models come with a choice between a 4-litre or 8-litre water heater, instantly providing three or six litres of boiling water respectively. Ron adds, “With a sales and service network up and running, myself and the team are taking our very first orders. We’re talking to kitchen specialists all day, every day and helping them to understand the unique selling points the HotSpot Titanium has to offer. As well as promoting the tap’s unconditional 5-year guarantee, it’s our job to educate the retailer and show them why our taps could benefit them. We have a lot of ground to cover but I have every confidence in the product and my team.”

“The first few months of 2017 presented a very different picture from the growth experienced in the cooling market during the same period in 2016. In the first three months of 2017 rising inflation started to have a noticeable impact on UK households, dampening consumer spending with prices rising faster across a range of goods and services than they have done for some time. The cooling market has experienced a challenging start to 2017, with recent AMDEA data reporting total refrigeration sales were down by 12.5 per cent compared to the same period last year. That said, tall fridges are still showing an upward curve.” Steve Macdonald, Marketing Director of Freestanding Division Hoover Candy UK

THE BIG FREEZE It may well be British summertime but K&B Journal is looking at the best cooling products on the market…

“The built in category is the most popular, as it allows a cohesive kitchen design. Within the premium market, side by side fridge and freezer units are often the models of choice. Many manufacturers offer a variety of features and enhancements as points of differentiation, for example keep fresh (humidity/cooling), nonplumbed ice making, LED lighting etc. Although many brands have distinct food preservation zones, they don’t all work alike. For example, Miele PerfectFresh Pro controls both humidity and temperature; where as some other models control only the temperature. The principle factor for many when buying a Miele appliance is that they are investing in a product that offers great quality and is built to last; appliances are tested for 20 years equivalent usage.” Max McCormick, Product Manager at Miele

“Social media and the rise of food and fitness bloggers has really pushed healthy diets and lifestyles to the fore, and so it’s easy to see how steam ovens and combi-steam ovens have seen a surge in popularity as they can produce meals with a vitamin content that is 22% higher and up to 36% less fat than other cooking methods. It’s a simple switch that people can make to eat more healthily everyday.” Rhys Evans, Sales Director UK & Ireland at V-ZUG UK

V-ZUG’s new model, the Combi-Steam MSLQ oven, brings together all of the best features of V-ZUG’s combi-steam ovens, with the added quick convenience of a microwave. By simply pressing the oven’s PowerPlus function, the oven is boosted into action and accelerates the cooking programmes. The technology has been developed over the last four years and promises the user a time saving of up to one third. This style of cooking also preserves the essential nutrients with tests confirmed by the Zurich University of Applied Sciences. 0843 289 5759 • www.vzug.com

THINGS ARE STEAMING UP With lifestyle gurus and diet blogger’s popularity increasing, the steam oven is captivating the market with its health benefits… The Miele Generation 6000 DGC 6600 XL PureLine combination steam oven features Miele MultiSteam technology where water from the tank is pumped into a steam generator located behind the motorised lift up control panel. Steam is then distributed quickly and uniformly via six inlet ports, ensuring even cooking while retaining your food’s essential vitamins and minerals. It also means no limescale deposits in the oven cabinet as the stream is generated outside the inner cavity. 0845 330 2660 • www.miele.co.uk

“Although consumer knowledge of steam cooking has increased, a small misconception that steam ovens are only suitable for cooking vegetables still remains. The latest technology available in steam combination is definitely an area that needs to be showcased. Demonstrate if you can by having a working appliance. Showing customers what it can do and the added benefits it can offer is key for getting vital messages across.” Max McCormick, Product Manager at Miele

With thinner materials very much in vogue as a design feature, the Options range includes five 22mm slimline worktop and breakfast bar designs in Alabaster, Antique Paladina, Calacatta Statuario, Lightning Graphite and Jet Marble. All five include Bushboard’s Q3 profile to give a slab cut, linear aesthetic. Options also recognises the importance of surface textures to consumers and the range features nine textures including four new introductions to the range of Quarry, Glaze, Vintage and Fusion. Quarry offers a pitted and polished stone look; Glaze is semi-reflective gloss and matt; Vintage provides a low sheen, time-worn

effect; Fusion offers subtle oxidised and weathered reflections in matt and gloss. Each texture has been chosen to give designs the maximum aesthetic appeal while also delivering the easy maintenance laminate is known for. Says Neil Horton, commercial director at Bushboard: “Over the last twenty years, our retail partners have always trusted us to bring them successful worksurface ranges and Options is continuing in that vein. It features leading-edge new designs and surface textures, alongside proven consumer favourites, giving retailers an inspirational new dimension to their sales offer.

Pescara in Glaze texture delivers the elegance of top-end marbles in a material that is easy to install and maintain. “As proud supporters of the Made in Britain campaign, this is all backed up with the signature quality, retail support and customer care that they are used to from Bushboard.” The Options range has a brand new POS package available for retailers which includes graphics, consumer brochures, sample blocks, swatches and preferential display deals for showroom sets. ARE YOU A PRO? Häfele UK sets new standards in drawer design with the Grass Nova Pro Scala Drawer System…

T

he award-winning Grass Nova Pro Scala Drawer System, part of the Grass Nova Pro brand, has become synonymous with exceptional quality, stability and smooth-glide double-wall drawers. Built on the solid reputation Grass holds in the industry, the drawer system sets itself apart from the competition thanks to a number of key product innovations. Available exclusively through Häfele in the UK, the drawer system has been designed to optimise space to a maximum thanks to its straight inside surface and minimum construction width. It also offers a soft-close concept which smoothly and softly brake with the use of the specially developed liquid damper. This high-tech fluid enables the closing movement to feel lighter than previous drawer systems.

Individuality is also key to the design’s success. By offering the flexibility of different exterior finishes, Nova Pro Scala provides the versatility to enable trends to be set or followed. Glass, wood or metal finishes can be combined with four standard drawer heights resulting in a truly modular system. The launch of the Grass Nova Pro Scala Drawer System to the UK market is the latest development of the strategic partnership announced earlier this year between furniture fittings and architectural hardware specialist Häfele and movement specialist Grass. The UK divisions of the two businesses declared a united focus to bring the best movement system solutions to UK customers, and Nova Pro Scala fulfils on that promise, presenting new levels of sophistication in drawer design.

“Patriotism is at an all time high, seeing many consumers jump on the band wagon and support British manufacturing and the brands that serve this sector. Consequently, we’ve forecasted a 22% increase in business for Daval when compared to this time last year: tripling the pick-up rate from 2015 with 14% of that share going to kitchens.” Simon Bodsworth, Managing Director, Daval

“Despite initial concerns after Brexit, we’ve seen business continue to grow well. We need Britain to continue recovering and confidence to remain in the British public. If the government remains committed to increasing housing and banks continue to write mortgages, those businesses that are correctly placed should do well.” Paul Jenkinson, Managing Director, Faith Furniture Company

K&B Journal talks to David Osborne, Managing Director of Roman, on his company’s ‘Made In Britain’ ethos What are the UK’s biggest strengths in manufacturing and what unique selling points do these factors create? “Although we are volume manufacturers, what sets us apart is our ability to develop products for specific customers and contracts, which is very capability driven. Roman not only manufacture shower enclosures we also fabricate solid surface products such as vanity units; walls; and structure for the bathroom – offering the complete package.” Does the ‘Made In Britain’ label still influence buying patterns and reflect a premium price? Why? “Made in Britain is getting increased recognition and credibility in the UK. Increasingly customers are trying to understand the provenance of products. The provenance of products has always been very strong in housebuilding and

projects where builders and contractors want to understand the guarantee and CE marking of the product. We understand that this is less recognised than we would want in the retail sector, however a lot of this is down to the merchant who may be unaware of provenance issues – CE marking, guarantees etc. The real impact for us is internationally and ‘Made in Britain’ is definitely a quality mark abroad and also for some it is even a novelty.” How do ‘CE’ regulations influence manufacturers and retailers alike and does it still hold the same weight in the industry as it once did? “CE Marking has been mandatory since July 2013. Housebuilders, Contractors, Major Hotel Groups and Merchants are very aware of CE marking and the penalties that go with it. Whether this is lost in translation in distribution, as a lot of retailers don’t understand that they are breaking the law. People don’t realise that the product may be good but if it is not CE marked it is not legal. There are some products which are showing a CE mark but haven’t got any papers to prove it. It is a major misunderstanding that the importers are liable, this is not the case, it is the reseller that is liable.”

How do you see Brexit effecting ‘Made in Britain’ and what are your predictions for the market going forward once we leave the EU? “Since Brexit, clearly exchange rates have had a seismic shift. Imported Chinese product is more expensive and exporting our products is cheaper. We are sure currencies will drift back towards their more recognised levels over the next two years. For us we anticipate little impact as most export work is specification driven, for example special moulding, special fabrication and special shower enclosures all built for the specific project requirements – this is heavily capability driven rather than on price or nationality.” Why should we buy British? “British made products are increasing in popularity due to their trusted quality, specific sizes and tailor made products to the UK market – and in general they provide excellent after sales and customer service. We don’t look for or expect any overriding sense of nationalism to influence purchasing decisions. However if two products are perceived to be the same quality and similar price you would like to think that any enlightened Consumer in the UK would rather buy a British product above a Chinese one – however it is not always obvious.”

Ted Baker Partridge

A JOURNEY OF CHANGE W K&B Journal talks to BCT’s Head of Design, Claire O’Brien, about the company’s change in direction and investment in the future…

Claire O’Brien

e’ve been on a big journey over the past four years and the company has undergone many changes,” begins Claire O’Brien, Head of Design at British Ceramic Tile. “We find ourselves in a strong position and we want people to understand who we are, what we do and why we do it.” Until recently, BCT was focused on selling commodity tiles. Volume mattered and thanks to the Devon-based company’s vast manufacturing plant, the business had the infrastructure in place to provide price-sensitive designs to the masses. Claire explains, “The world we knew was changing, with fierce competition from China and large sheds sourcing their own products. It was clear that we needed to revaluate our business and approach things differently.”

This saw the long-standing tile manufacturer change direction and take influences from lifestyle, interiors and trends. The introduction of the company’s first inkjet machine in 2012 was also a turning point that enabled the company to approach new ranges in a bespoke way and offer a complete room solution for its customers. “It opened up a whole new world of possibilities,” says Claire. “The inkjet allowed us to introduce much more depth into our designs and it puts us in control of everything. We no longer had to rely on spot colour printing which, whilst it still has its place today, can’t offer the intricate details and clarity that an inkjet machine can.” The new machines work hand in hand with the ongoing success BCT achieves with its design collaborations. The company has worked with designers like V&A and Laura

Ashley for a number of years, but it’s most recent collaboration has seen the team work alongside Ted Baker to create some of its most show-stopping designs to date. “Collaborating with designers is a big part of our ethos but they have to be the right fit for us. Working with the right names broadens our portfolio and ultimately, our reach within the market. It also allows us to be completely unique and offer something others simply can’t. When it came to working with Ted Baker, we knew that by working together, we could translate the brand’s personality into a tile collection and still make it commercially viable. It’s been a great selling point for us.” Building on BCT’s solid foundations, it is looking to cement its name as a ‘go to’ brand for tile design and to be known as a trend expert. “To become a commercial trend setter

is our ultimate goal and one that we know is achievable. Design and patterns used to be a lot more proscriptive but over the last few years, lifestyles have become so much more important. Now, people want a look, a feel and something they can transpose into their homes. This is what we’re aiming for with our ranges. With this in mind, we want to be able to educate our trade customers and the end users on the importance of tiles in the home and show consumers how tiles can impact greatly on room design.” The export market is also a relatively new advance for the British tile producer but an area that has seen continual growth over the last four years. Claire explains, “Thanks to our solid range of core products – which range from entry level price points and own branded products to our premium design collections - and with help from the internet and social

media, world markets are becoming much more aligned. You can’t be all things for all men but markets are merging. You can see similarities and design synergies which are allowing us to work more freely with other countries. It’s fair to say we’re now baring the fruits of this. Being brutally commercial, the more we can make our products travel and have a broader reach, the better.” Claire adds, “We’ve come a long way in four years and we’re now seeing our hard work pay off. We’re more focused and this gives us a quiet confidence which is inevitably passed on to our customers and end users. It’s a great position to be in but we can’t be complacent. We’re continuing to push the boundaries and, with continual investment and a new ink jet machine being installed this month, its true to say that BCT has found its calling.”

n an industry where your reputation is everything, it pays to protect it. Poor packaging leads to damage, disappointment and delay - not to mention unnecessary extra cost for the manufacturer. British packaging specialist, NMC, has been developing its range of technical foams and protective profiles for over 50 years. A specialist in extruded polyethylene, the range includes seven product lines and 13 different profiles for protecting the edges of anything from baths to worktops. The profiles densities range from a basic U-profile edge protector that fits 5-160mm worktops, glass and flat products, through to an L-section that’s used for kitchen, bedroom and bathroom cabinets. Eight further profiles are also available for use as bumper pads to protect the arms and bases of furniture. Unlike Polystyrene, which is prone to breakage and bubble wrap, that can burst on impact, the big advantage of extruded

polyethylene is that it can take multiple hits without losing its form or its effectiveness. NMC’s product is dust and water-resistant and it is chemically inert, so it will not damage or stain the surface. It’s also resistant to impacts, abrasion and scuffing, humidity, water and temperature fluctuations. Cost-wise, NMC’s Nomapack® products are on a par with corrugated or polystyrene edge protectors and slightly ahead of bubble wrap, whilst boasting environmentally friendly materials. The range offers edge protection profiles for every type of corner and the various profiles can be adapted to suit the shape of practically any product. But if you have a particular application that demands a custom-made profile, or you need a badged product in your corporate colours, all things are possible. Turnaround time for a brand new product is approximately 12 weeks from concept to delivery.

“Fitted bedrooms are typically viewed as a high value investment, however this common misconception has literally turned the corner to see UK retailers identify that bespoke bedroom design is a great way to access business growth or in the case of the homeowner, generate home equity. With that, premium furniture manufacturers are being expected to gain a new understanding of consumer buying habits and supply a highly competitive product portfolio that will compete against the more high-risk import market. In general, the bedroom furniture market has forecast a 2% growth in 2017, which is typical of bedrooms, especially when coming out of recession. Thanks to our unique production, our portfolio has a projected 10-12% growth as a result of our made-to-measure market position.” Simon Bodsworth, Managing Director for Daval

his year, Getley is set to increase the size of its manufacturing facility by 50 percent and install £600,000-worth of new CNC machinery. It’s a fitting way for the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom furniture specialist to celebrate its 10th anniversary. “We have a trusted formula in terms of quality and service which has driven strong growth since we started up in 2006,” says Managing Director Mark Getley. “This investment in our premises and equipment is about being prepared for the future and continuing to provide the sort of made-tomeasure cabinetry, using the best materials and construction, which has built our reputation.” The family-owned business originated as a kitchen retailer. “We only started to make cabinets because we had been let down by suppliers,” says Mark. “We then moved out of retail and focused on manufacturing cabinets. We haven’t looked back since.” While cabinetry continues to be the focus of manufacturing at Getley, the company

increasingly supplies complete furniture packages including doors, hardware, wirework and integrated lighting, all wellpackaged for on-site delivery. When the business started for example, about 20 percent of kitchen orders were for complete product, whereas now the figure is around 50 percent. A growing area of business is bedrooms, which is heading towards 15 percent of total sales. Choice is a big factor. With access to the top door suppliers and the facility to spray to any colour, Getley can offer complete flexibility to the customer. This is in contrast to the rather rigid offering from some continental suppliers. Ranges extend from traditional in-frame to contemporary handleless formats, complemented by relationships with brands such as Egger for board and Hettich for hardware. Following this year’s investments, expect some important product developments from Getley: KBB 2018 will be yet another milestone.

GEHA

WHERE SMALL DETAILS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE InHouse welcomes bedroom furniture manufacturer, Geha, into its fold…

I

t’s by watching human behaviour that clever manufacturers create the small details to make a big difference. In any showroom around the world, a customer will always do a few things. They will run their hands over the surfaces. They will open cupboards. They will open and close drawers. These are not indiscriminate activities. In fact, in any shop the tactile feel confirms to a consumer whether or not the product is quality. That’s why car manufacturers spend many, many thousands getting the right sound and feel when a car door closes. Because they know that’s one of the single biggest selling points. So when Geha concentrates on the small details, it’s because that is what makes a big difference. It’s this foundation that created Geha. Quality bedroom, dining and living room furniture. Made in Germany. Family history: We believe a company is strongest when it’s built on traditional

family values. Where each generation builds on the legacy left by the last. Creating a future for everyone involved. For Geha it all began in 1891. Josef Henrichsmeyer, the grandfather of today’s Managing Partner, was born in Hövelhof on March 20. After training as a carpenter he set up his first master workshop in 1913 and by the 1920s he was specialising in manufacturing bedrooms. It’s a tradition that continues today with Josef’s grandson Rolf Henrichsmeyer, the Managing Director. Famous drawers: If there’s one thing that Geha is famous for – it’s the manufacture of their drawers. They’re considered specialists in their industry. In 1969, Rudolf Henrichsmeyer senior, son of Josef and the father of Rolf, developed a laminating frame. An invention that revolutionised the industrial production of drawers.

Today, the innovative laminating technology is the technological centrepiece of production. The quality of the drawer box and system is one of the most important furniture elements. From the smooth and quiet operation to the organisation of bedroom, living room or dining room. Over 150,000 drawers leave the factory every day. That’s over 35 million drawers a year. Millions of drawers, opened day after day. Keeping bedrooms, dining and living rooms beautifully organised and people ready to face the day. And at night, the quiet opening and soft closing means everything can be put away neatly for the day ahead. Growing production: The 90 years experience of the Henrichsmeyer family and its many employees, have created an international reputation for quality cabinet-making. Operating from a 135,000 square metre production area in Hövelhof, Germany, the

company and over 350 qualified employees with cutting edge technology produce 150,000 drawers, 60,000 furniture parts and 50,000 packaging items every day. Now a leading industrial manufacturer, Geha understands that craftsmanship counts at every stage of manufacture. The quality of products is guaranteed by the internal Quality Assurance team, where employees personally check the quality of the modern furniture. The factory is certified in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001, a rigorous quality mark that demonstrates Geha’s focus on enhancing customer satisfaction. Frequent internal and external audits also ensure permanent optimisation with a constant eye on quality across all areas. Geha is also FSC-and PEFC-certified. That’s not where Geha’s commitment to sustainability stops. The factory is powered by its own inhouse wood-fired heat and power

station. Where heat is recycled and exchanged for optimum efficiency. Keeping it human: Geha knows that success comes down to relationships. Relationships with employees, who are invested in and trained. Relationships with international partners, with InHouse Inspired Room Design being the main UK partner. Relationships with each retailer who are also welcome at the factory and at Geha’s superb exhibition facility. Regular retailer trips from the UK are hosted by InHouse. And not to forget the end consumer. The individual who Geha wants to enjoy and love their bedroom, living and dining room furniture. InHouse has just returned from a highly successful visit to Geha factory and stunning showroom. The 34 retailers where enormously impressed with 61 display orders confirmed on the day. The next retailer trip is already planned for September. Don’t miss out.

B

athroom furniture has become an essential part of any bathroom specification and is currently one of the fastest growing sectors in the industry. PJH’s latest Bathrooms To Love Collection features its largest furniture range to date including both fitted and modular solutions with an inspirational choice of classic and contemporary styles. Manufactured in the UK and supplied fully assembled, the modular Carino range features contemporary J-profile integrated handles incorporated into the cabinet rather than the door. This true handless look is achieved through an aluminium ‘J’ shaped rail which is routed to the cabinetry. An 18mm rigid durable cabinet - with fully glued and doweled construction - ensures strength and reliability and includes wall fixings, soft close drawers and runners. This range comes in three finishes - Cashmere Gloss, White Gloss and Grey Drift - and unit choices include wall mounted and floorstanding options. Meanwhile the Fresco fitted furniture range includes a comprehensive choice of door types and finishes, including slab, shaker and integrated handle designs. Like Carino, Fresco is rigid and durable with quality at the heart of its design, and

both include a 5 year guarantee. With 14 door finishes and three cabinet options, as well as a space-saving short projection range, Fresco can be wall hung, floor standing on legs or plinth lined. Clean high gloss finishes to warm timber-effects (Walnut, Oak and Stone Ash), as well as a great choice of handles, from the ultra modern to ornate, make the Fresco fitted range very popular. Zaira Woods, Product Manager for Bathroom Furniture, PJH, said: “Bathroom furniture continues to be influenced by kitchen cabinetry innovations, so design and storage solutions within this sector are evolving at a steady pace. Like the kitchen market, it’s becoming easier to create personalised bathroom spaces by mixing and matching the many bathroom furniture options and finishes with ceramics, baths and showers. Designers can create individual looks, even in the smallest of bathrooms by combining stylish cabinetry with clever integrated storage solutions which exceed customer aspirations. Bathroom cabinetry is so versatile and many ranges include coordinated accessories to complete the look, such as bath panels, mirrors and splashbacks – which are all great for maximising basket spend.”

MARKET INSIGHT Richard Nicholls, Sales Director a Sanipex UK talks to K&J Journal about modular bathroom design in the UK… Reports suggest that the market for modular bathroom design remains strong. What current factors are contributing to these findings and do you see this trend continuing? “Where traditionally the bath or the shower would have been considered as the main element of a bathroom, in the modern bathroom furniture is increasingly becoming a focal point of the space. Unlike with fully fitted furniture, modular units can be added to a bathroom retrospectively, enabling consumers to update

“The need for storage is not the only reason that the trend for bathroom furniture is booming; consumers are opting for furniture for bathrooms of all shapes and sizes and with a plethora of styles, designs and finishes to choose from, designers are recognising that furniture can help add to the luxury feel of a bathroom. It is with this demand in mind that furniture was integral to the new Geberit complete bathroom solutions launch.” Raffaela De Vittorio, Marketing and Brands Director from Geberit

existing pieces with relative ease and to add additional storage to the room as it is needed. “Wall-hung modular pieces are particularly popular as with the floor left visible and free of obstacles, a spacious, easy to clean finish. Modular pieces can be sited in areas of the room that are most prone to clutter, or where storage opportunities would otherwise be missed, such as under the washbasin, above the basin and in corners, creating a clean and streamlined look but with all the necessary storage space to ensure even the smallest of bathrooms can be kept clutter-free.”

What design factors are proving popular in the UK market? “Consumers are keen on creating a relaxing, spa-style bathroom by introducing natural materials such as wood and mixing this with a

block colour for a warm, yet minimalist look. Others like the idea of adding a splash of colour to the space and modular furniture is the ideal way of introducing colour without it being overbearing – anything from vibrant orange through to sophisticated aubergine are popular.”

What are your predictions for the market going forward in terms of market growth and product innovation? “Modular furniture has a dual purpose in the modern bathroom – to make a style statement and to ensure the space is uncluttered, calm and relaxing. As the bathroom becomes ever smaller, particularly with the increasing trend for adding second bathrooms and cloakrooms, demand for clever storage solutions like that offered by modular furniture is likely to grow further.”

showers & trays 54 • kitchen & bathroom journal june 2017 “Far from being just another piece of brassware that fulfils a functional purpose in the bathroom, showers are now being chosen based on their looks too and how they can help create a hotelinspired, spa-like space. With minimalism being a key trend in the bathroom or wet room, showers, certainly at the top end of market, are now sleeker than ever, with concealed controls and super-thin profiles on columns and risers. “We are seeing a growing demand for floor-level shower surfaces in matt colours. Anti-slip finishes are a must for all customers. The trend for hidden functionality also extends to the waste, which is becoming more minimal and, where possible, finished in the same colour as the tray to minimise visual appearance.” Angela Ortmann-Torbett, Vice President Sales Western Europe at Kaldewei

“This is the first time we’ve exhibited at the Interzum. In the last four years, we’ve almost doubled our turnover, with our export sales accounting for around 50% of our business. With this in mind, it’s important that we exhibit at leading exhibitions and to be seen as leader in our field, not a follower. “ Thomas Crofts, Account Manager, Crofts and Assinder

INTERZUM 2017:

KINGS OF CUSTOMISATION As individualism captivated the halls at this year’s Interzum, K&J Journal takes a look at the latest products to reflect this growing trend…

A

t this years Interzum, it was clear that, whilst many stands presented exciting new product ranges and unique innovations to the European KBB market, the trend amongst exhibitors was customisation. From Grass’ heavily patterned drawer boxes and Pelly’s flexible kitchen storage solutions, to Hera’s fully bespoke lighting offering and Vauth Sagel customised drawer organisers, the power of design is now in the hands of the consumer. “The need to offer customers choice is key in today’s market,” explains Michael Hoekstra, Managing Director at Hera GmbH & Co. “Consumers are more aware than ever of the products available to them and this naturally leads to manufacturers like us creating flexible solutions that can reflect people’s lifestyles and personalities. This is why we offers our customers an online customisation tool that

allows them to have complete control over the look of their products. From the length and finish, to the colour of the LEDs, this bespoke service gives people the freedom to make their designs a reality.” Amaia Urrestarazu, Sales Manager at Indaux explains, “For us, we’re seeing a change in the way we develop our products. Our customers, from the big players like Ikea to niche independents, tell us what their customers want to be able to achieve and we design the products around them. Many of our products have been developed this way and we feel that by listening to our customers and offering them a virtually bespoke product, it is a great way to stay ahead of the competition.” Phillip O’Malley, Sales Director at Hettich UK adds, “Embarking on trends is generational.

We’re seeing younger demographics looking to embrace customisation and make their own design statement. We’ve been seeing this in the furniture sector for a few years now but the idea of flexible design is now being fed down as far as furniture components. Because of this, we are offering our customers even more choice, allowing them to be bold or demure with their design choices.. To open their minds to new possibilities, we’ve recently introduced an ideas book that offers an insight into the different applications you can do with one product. It’s a great way for people to see the full potential of the product and to picture it in their home.” Keen to find out more? Here’s a closer look at some of the latest concepts to capture the trend for customisation… For more information please visit www.interzum.com.

EGGER AT INTERZUM Taking centre stage at Interzum, authenticity remains at the forefront of Egger’s latest décor collection…

E

gger, one of Europe’s largest manufacturer of laminate and woodbased materials for the KBB industry, brought all of its recent product introductions together under one roof for its offering at this year’s Interzum trade fair. Its stand at the leading show for furniture manufacturing and interior design in Cologne Messe, showed highlights from the newly-launched Egger Decorative Collection

2017-2019, as well as some recent innovations and inspiring applications. What Egger calls its ‘matt concept’ created a lot of interest. Its premium PerfectSense gloss and matt lacquered boards – with the proven quality of an Egger MDF core – are well-suited for applications in residential and commercial areas and in upscale retail as well as for furniture design. Complementing its PerfectSense Matt board, is a new Egger PerfectSense Topmatt laminate that it unveiled at the show. Seen for the very first time, this shares the matt surface and anti-fingerprint features, but was specially developed for use on high-stress surfaces such as worktops and tables. ABS and PMMA edges with coordinated décors and textures matching the matt surfaces are available, and Egger anticipates

that manufacturers will have specialist fabricators use it to create worktops with an upmarket understated look. Authenticity remains the main focus for all Egger décors. In addition to appearance, the feel of the surfaces is also particularly important. Textures are expressive – and have character, depth and naturalness. High-quality design accents such as the Doppia edge in PMMA are available in numerous eye-catching décor options, and the black-gold colour received a ‘special mention’ in February at the German Design Awards – with visual perfection achieved thanks to the narrow join. Doppia edging perfects the illusion of real glass on furniture and follows the design trend towards accents and contrasts. The bicoloured appearance also creates a highquality colour transition to the surface décor.
