HEAR ME WHEN I CALL TO YOU. MAY MY PRAYER BE SET BEFORE YOU LIKE INCENSE.

YOUR PRAYERS MATTER

hank you so much for your prayers for our Venture and Falcon holidays over the last five weeks. As the second part of this Prayer Diary begins, I want to underline how important your prayers are. I don’t just mean to CPAS – though obviously they are and always will be! Rather, I want to bring to your attention what the Bible says about the beauty and value of our prayers to God himself.

T

In Psalm 141:2, David asks God: ‘May my prayer be set before you like incense’. For Zechariah, the place of incense was the place of answered prayer (Luke 1:11-13). And without getting too involved in the exegetical complexity of Revelation chapter 8, John’s vision includes reference to incense which appears to be representative of the prayers of the saints. The significance of this becomes clear when we consider the importance and positioning of the altar of incense in both the Mosaic tabernacle and the temple of the Old Testament. In both tabernacle and temple, the rising incense reminds us of the prayers of God’s people, and the altar of incense is positioned in the Holy Place – just in front of the veil leading to the Holy of Holies. Whilst we should not over-rely on old covenant architecture to inform our new covenant theology, it strikes me that the

positioning of this altar indicates something of the value of the prayers of God’s people. The altar of incense was adjacent to the Holy of Holies – it was, to use a modern idiom, close to God’s heart. When Jesus taught his disciples to pray, he invited them to say ‘Our Father’. This can be seen as an invitation to closeness with an implicit acknowledgment of the importance of the petitions being brought to our perfect Father. As a father myself (though woefully imperfect), I have always found the ‘asks’ of my children to be close to my heart. They have been acceded to when the same request from others might not have. My son and daughters have always been granted access to my study, even when others have not. Their requests matter to me. So as you join us in praying for the work of CPAS, let me use these few words to assure you that your prayers truly matter to God. They are like incense. They are precious to him, and he hears and responds. Thank you for praying with us.

SING TO THE LORD, ALL THE EARTH; PROCLAIM HIS SALVATION DAY AFTER DAY. 1 CHRONICLES 16:23

e praise God for significant growth in the benefice of Cogges and South Leigh over the last five years. St Mary’s Cogges sees 200-300 adults and 80-100 children and young people each Sunday across four services, and is actively looking for a new space to expand into.

W

St James South Leigh is famous for its medieval wall paintings depicting biblical scenes, and for being the church where John Wesley preached his first sermon. A café church was recently launched which meets once a month, providing an interactive worship opportunity for families with children. Vicar Simon Kirby asks: ‘Please pray that God will help us as we seek to enable everyone in our parishes to flourish through connecting them with God, each other and the world. We’re currently exploring missional communities, and considering ways we can resource other churches in the area. We are also in the midst of several staffing changes, and looking for a new building.’

For your prayers: Sun 1: Cogges and South Leigh: Vicar Simon Kirby and all those involved in the leading the churches. Pray particularly for those new to their roles, including curate Andy McCulloch. Mon 2: Cogges and South Leigh: God’s provision of a new space for St Mary’s. Praise God for the significant growth over the last five years! Tue 3: Cogges and South Leigh: Café church at St James South Leigh, and also the monthly community lunch run by the benefice. Pray these are places where people meet Jesus. Wed 4: Wales: Archbishop of Wales John Davies. Pray also for the bishops as they lead the six dioceses: Bangor, Llandaff, Swansea and Brecon, Monmouth, St Asaph and St Davids. Thu 5: Leadership: The editorial board for the Grove Leadership Series meets today. Praise God for this fruitful partnership with CPAS and pray many more useful resources are produced. Fri 6: Cogges and South Leigh: Those taking part in Alpha courses. Pray they will be able to ask honest questions, and ultimately come to know Christ for themselves. Sat 7: Cogges and South Leigh: For the missional communities to thrive, and for God to use this benefice to support and resource other churches in the area. 15

O

We’re now running our second two-yearlong Calling Young Disciples learning community. We also run termly sessions for the mission enablers themselves, the latest of which takes place next week. Each learning community involves leaders from across about six churches or groups of churches as they work with a mission enabler for 12 months to try to draw more young people into discovering the good news of Jesus. 06 18

Wed 18: CPAS: Today is the annual CPAS staff day when staff learn, share and pray together. May the Holy Spirit inspire everyone about the impact and potential of CPAS’ work. THEOLOGICAL EDUCATION CPAS’ Work with St Mellitus

MAY MY CRY COME BEFORE YOU, LORD; GIVE ME UNDERSTANDING ACCORDING TO YOUR WORD. PSALM 119:169

t Mellitus College was established by London and Chelmsford dioceses in 2007. Its vision is to ‘offer theological education and training set in the context of prayer and worship’ across five centres: London, Chelmsford, North West, South West and East Midlands.

S

CPAS staff regularly offer input on missional leadership and other areas of Christian leadership development for both ordinands and undergraduate and postgraduate theology students. This Monday (30 September), James Lawrence of CPAS is teaching a session titled ‘Leading from the second chair’ at St Mellitus’ centre in London, while CPAS Leadership Specialist Ian Parkinson simultaneously delivers training at the college’s North West centre, based in Liverpool. Ian is leading a session on contemporary Christian leadership for MA students in the morning, and going on to teach second year ordinands about communicating vision in the afternoon. 06 20

For your prayers: Sun 29: Local churches: Charles Burgess is preaching at Holy Trinity Aldershot today. Pray for God to use this church to reach many, many people who don’t yet know Christ. Mon 30: Theological education: James Lawrence and Ian Parkinson as they teach today at St Mellitus London and North West respectively. Tue 1: Theological education: Many of those attending programmes at St Mellitus are already working in positions of leadership. Pray for fresh vision and energy as they study and reflect. Wed 2: Theological education: St Mellitus’ new East Midlands centre in Nottingham. Thank God for this new venture and ask that this might be a blessing to the whole region in the decades to come. Thu 3: Leadership: Applications for the next Arrow Leadership Programme have opened. Pray the Holy Spirit would prompt many leaders aged 25-40 to apply. Fri 4: Theological education: Praise God that CPAS has the opportunity to deliver teaching at two additional theological colleges this year – St Mellitus East Midlands (tbc) and Winchester School of Mission. Sat 5: CPAS staff: John Dunnett, who is speaking at Lincoln Diocesan Evangelical Fellowship. Please pray that John is able to encourage those present in contending for the gospel.

VENTURES AND FALCONS

6-12 OCTOBER

School Ventures IN CHRIST WE, THOUGH MANY, FORM ONE BODY, AND EACH MEMBER BELONGS TO ALL THE OTHERS. ROMANS 12:5

For your prayers: Sun 6: School Ventures: Kat Taylor, who is the main overall leader of Wirral School Venture. Lift up her and the team as they make final preparations for the weekend.

his weekend the Wirral School Venture takes place near Birkenhead. After being piloted in 2016, this School Venture now takes place twice a year and has established strong links between the Church of England schools and churches involved.

T

These links are crucial aspects of each School Venture, helping to connect children with suitable, age-appropriate programmes offered by churches in their area after the residential, and also setting or strengthening the platform for churches to partner effectively with their local schools. On Saturday, Tim Friend (Ventures and Falcons Principal) has an exciting opportunity to forge new partnerships when he exhibits at the Coventry Schools Ministry Day. This is a conference organised by Coventry diocese for those working with children and young people in churches and schools in order to ‘ inspire, affirm and equip churches in their mission, ministry and discipleship for children’.

Mon 7: Leadership: John Dunnett, CPAS General Director, who will be leading The Biblical Anatomy of Leadership in Ware tomorrow. Tue 8: Leadership: On Call – Stay or Go? which is taking place in Cheltenham today to help clergy discern whether God is calling them to move to a new role or stay where they are with renewed enthusiasm. Wed 9: School Ventures: Praise God for the School Ventures that have already established good relationships between churches and schools. Pray that God will continue to build this. Thu 10: School Ventures: There are a mix of school staff and local church volunteers helping this weekend. Pray that good, fruitful connections will be made between them. Fri 11: School Ventures: The children and their teachers as they arrive at the Barnstondale Centre. Pray that their hearts will be prepared for all that God has in store for the weekend. Sat 12: School Ventures: Tim Friend as he exhibits at Coventry Schools Ministry Day, encouraging churches and schools to explore the idea of working together on a School Venture. 07 21
