President’s Message

Message de la Présidente

Well I am very glad to say that the drought in Alberta appears to be over. Our cows were put out to pasture last weekend under grey and leaky skies with only one, yes one, bale of hay left in our yard. That is the first time we have ever come that close to running out of feed, so the rain we have gotten over the last 2 weeks has been a perfectly timed blessing. The grass is growing wildly now and things are definitely looking up.

With summer almost here, it is time to start looking forward to September… you say what? Well, September is time for National Show and Sale (kind of like Christmas for some of us) and it will be held in Olds, Alberta on the 29th of September thru October 2. I strongly encourage all Blonde enthusiasts to come and enjoy the weekend. There will be details and contact information found in this edition of the newsletter. Cream of the Crop sale information has also been put out by the Ontario Association so have a look at the dates for the sales entries and the sale so that you don’t miss out. As for news from the board, things have been pretty quiet for the last little while. With the new SNP DNA initiative and lab changes in the works there will be some follow up work to resubmit DNA samples for all of the members that are taking advantage of this opportunity. It will definitely help the accuracy and integrity of our screening as we progress. Just as an example, I had a call from Delta Genomics yesterday with concerns about 2 animals from 2 different herds (that are both highly likely to have been submitted correctly) not perfectly matching their respective dams. SNP testing should remove those types of inconsistencies from happening. Talking to the geneticists from Delta has also been very educational and they have been really good at explaining ‘how things work’ in the DNA world in language that normal people can understand. In closing for this edition of my message, I want to pay tribute to a longstanding member of the Blonde community who left us a couple of weeks ago. Art Breitkreuz passed away after a hard fought battle with cancer. I had the privilege of attending his funeral with a couple of other blonde breeders and the stories that were told clearly showed Art’s passion and love for his family, friends and neighbors, 4-H, blonde cattle and agriculture in general. It was told to us that just a matter of a couple of days before Art was hospitalized for the last time, he went and bought himself an 8430 John Deere tractor – his dream tractor -- and was able to get up in the cab and drive it down his field and back. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sharon and their family as they work through this tough time. Art’s friendship and longstanding contribution to the breed will not be forgotten.

IMPORTANT REMINDER

Canadian Blonde FEE CHANGES Animal registrations will increase to $35 after 6 months of age and $50 after 1 year of age.

......... Blonde Canadienne MODIFICATION DE LA GRILLE TARIFAIRE

tour AQUITANIMA by Nicholas Boyd / par Nicholas Boyd

Recently, Reed Rigney and I represented the Canadian Blonde d’Aquitaine Association as delegates from Canada at the Aquitanima Event in Bordeaux, France. The event took place from May 10-14, and was organized by Blonde d’Aquitaine France, Evolution International, Auriva Elevage (formerly Mida Test) and Blonde Genetique France, in a collaborative effort.

Representatives from all four organizations gave a seminar at our first stop, the renowned Casteljaloux Breed Selection Station. Seventeen others would be joining us on the four day tour, which included delegates from Algeria, Ivory Coast, Spain, Tunisia and Australia. The dynamics of the group were unique, and would provide entertainment plus the chance to network. As the tour progressed, we quickly learned that most of the other delegates were brand new to the breed or looking to learn more about the breed in hopes of making an informed decision on whether to get involved or look elsewhere.

Over the four day tour we visited various Blonde d’Aquitaine farms, each offering different aspects of the industry, and a unique way in which they function. The hospitality and cooperation shown at the farms towards the delegates and their endless questions was top notch. Even with the language barrier, the translators did a fantastic job, and the hosts remained patient. While it would require a novel to relay the details of all we saw and learned, pictures and a description can be found on my Facebook page (Nicholas Boyd aka Ralph Malph), and we would happily answer any questions surrounding the trip over a simple phone call.

A neat feature to the Tour was that it was the 20th year of Aquitanima and they certainly went above and beyond. In total, seventeen countries were represented amongst the 160 delegates in attendance for the Blonde d’Aquitaine, Limousin and Goat Breeds that were included in Aquitanima. Reed was asked to do a presentation on the

CBDA at the International Seminar in the Regional Council building. His presentation was fantastic and even garnered himself some newspaper print plus some TV time on the French newscasts. Some may call him an A-lister now. Some neat tidbits we learned on the trip: there are 530,000 Blonde d’Aquitaine cattle in France. Every animal, registered or not is required to have recorded history of parentage (which can be checked!). 35,000 of these cows are actually registered, and “controlled” (scored, data recorded) by the Breed Association. Animals can move into the herdbook provided they have four generations of animals “controlled” by the Association. They complain about their prices being way down, but are getting $3.41/lb for cull cows. They have a cull rate of 25-35% at most farms as the French mainly eat cow meat, and young stock are exported for further fattening. The Pyrenees region tends to have cattle more suited towards and similar to the majority of Canadians. It leaves a smile on your face when you drive and all you see is farm after farm of Blonde d’Aquitaine cattle. The trip was certainly one to remember and I am thankful I was able to attend. The people were pleasant and helpful, and the delegates provided many laughs. I would suggest any Blonde lover who can afford to, to make a trip to France and check it out for yourself. It certainly gave me better perspective and also dreams of what could be here in Canada if we have the desire to make it happen.

Important Notice! Switch to SNP DNA Testing • All animals born after January 1, 2016 that require a DNA test must have it done using the SNP method. • The CBDA has been able to reduce the price of transitioning your herd to SNP DNA testing to $10/head. • Microsatellite DNA testing will be phased out rapidly and it is strongly suggested that members take advantage of this opportunity. • Animals must already be registered and have a DNA number to be eligible. • Members will need to submit a list of the animals they would like done in Excel Spreedsheet format, filled out electronically and emailed by July 1st, 2016 to Reed Rigney (rigney@clearwave.ca). • The form is available from Reed Rigney and required info is animal name, registration number and DNA number. All these things can be found on your registration papers or the CLRC website by looking up your herd inventory and selecting individual animals. • Hand written or scanned lists will not be accepted. • The initial tests will be done using DNA material already on file at the DNA lab, but in some cases members may be required to send a new DNA sample • We strongly suggest that members collect a new hair sample from any parent animals prior to selling them, especially herd sires. Not all of the samples in storage will be useable. • We are hoping to have all the testing complete by the early fall. • If you need to register and DNA test animals before the SNP transition of the parents is done you can apply to the CLRC for a SNP/Microsat combo test. This test will cost $32 if done by Jan 1, 2017. • This test uses Microsattelite DNA to parentage verify, but also creates a SNP DNA profile so that SNP testing can be used on the animal in the future. • AI sires with DNA on file will be transitioned and paid for by the CBDA.

Avis important!

news provinces from the

ALBERTA / BRITISH COLUMBIA

After enjoying a warmer than usual winter, the Provinces of Alberta and BC are in desperate need of moisture. As bad as 2015 was 2016 has started out worse, and forest fires rage almost unchecked in the North. However as I write this the first moisture since March is falling and forecast to continue for the next three days. Here’s hoping that we get a few inches to get the grass growing. The Alberta Association will be hosting the 2016 National Show, Sale and AGM in Olds from Sept 30 - Oct 2, 2016. Once again we will hold it in conjunction with the Olds Fall Classic Beef Show. Olds is a wonderful little town about 45 minutes north of the Calgary airport. It is big enough to have all the services you need, but small enough to make it easy to navigate. The undertaking of this show always requires sponsors to make it a success, and sponsorship opportunities are now available. A schedule, entry info and hotel info can be found elsewhere in the Newsletter. The Alberta Blonde Bull Test final results are in and a Polled Fullblood son of “Pet” came out on top with an ADG of 3.99 lbs/day (he was also top in the WPDA category). He was bred by Willow Springs Stock Farm and consigned by Upper Cache Blondes. Little Creek Farms was second with a Fullblood son of the import bull “Sauveur” also gaining 3.99 lbs/day. A Polled Fullblood son of WSS Warden 21W was third gaining 3.80 lbs/day for Upper Cache Blondes. Bulls from Willow Springs Stock Farm took second and third spot for WPDA with Polled Fullblood sons of Roseneath William and Crystal Youngblood. Full results are available on the Alberta & Canadian Blonde websites. by Reed Rigney

MANITOBA / SASKATCHEWAN

Hello from all of us here in the middle of Canada! The Blonde cattle have been moving quite regularly in this neck of the woods. We say “Welcome” to the new persons who have purchased animals from any of us here. Within this group there is a marvellous cooperation that makes sure whoever is interested in our breed of cattle can get in touch with the appropriate breeder who can supply it. The herds are not large but are well established as great animals. Our Membership is small but working hard to make the assets of the breed known out there and the advantages of owning one very desirable. Man/Sask held it’s annual meeting on April 2nd in Brandon MB. Early this spring there was a definite concern that the prairies were in for a drought as there was not normal snowfall generally plus none at all in South Saskatchewan. Rain in the spring was sparse to say the least until a couple of weeks ago when it started to rain. A million dollar rain, they call it. As far as the hay crop goes, that is a wait and see scenario. Having said that, it will be much better than first anticipated. We live in a wonderful country. Until next time, don’t go looking for trouble, it will find you by itself.

ONTARIO The Ontario Blonde d’Aquitaine Association held its AGM at Bobby C’s again this past March. The newly elected board consists of a lot of familiar faces, with the exception of Dave Payne who took Paul Ferguson’s Director position. Thanks to Paul and Mary Ellen Ferguson for all you’ve done and continue to do for the breed. Exciting new changes have been made to our Raffle. Past boards were experiencing challenges with the Heifer Raffle due to the lack of animals volunteered, increased market prices, and low ticket sales. Ashley McNevan proposed the idea of offering a sales voucher as a prize to be used at the Cream of the Crop Sale or to purchase a blonde animal from anyone in our membership (dull details elsewhere in the newsletter).

Our mini auction was entertaining as usual; a new t-shirt seemed to draw a lot of attention from Mr.September (P.Fee) (I’ve never seen someone change so many shades of red before!). The lucky bidder was Mary Ellen. The board is now working on new calving booklets, many thanks to Dave McNevan for his generous contribution to the project: the highest priced bag of feed ever at our mini auction! The famous pitchfork ended up heading home to Carp with me! When it was all said and done, well over $2200 was raised for the Association, awesome! The Cream of the Crop sale has been scheduled for Saturday, October 29th at Hoards Station Community Sales Barn. Thanks to Kirk McGee for his idea to offer our consignors a lower commission rate of 12% from 13% IF 40 or more animals are consigned by a due date of July 25th. Entry forms have been mailed or emailed out to members and is now posted on the website. Get your entries in to Eric Doran early! Thanks to Eric for offering his services again this year in creating our sales catalogue. Summer show season is fast approaching, with Campbellford starting it all off. There are still a few banners or sponsorship spaces available for this year’s show season. Contact Paul Fee or Kirk McGee if you are wanting to advertise your farm on one of the banners. Also, the board has approved its advertising roadmap! Contact Kirk McGee to assist you in your Farm’s advertising in one of the cooperative advertisements in various beef magazines. Nicholas can help you to advertise on our website. If you have any ideas of where we can advertise the breed in future years please let Kirk or Nicholas know of your suggestion. The Ontario Blonde d’Aquitaine Association is looking for volunteers for the IPM September 20-24th in Harriston. If you have some spare time and can help out in the booth to promote our breed and your farm please contact Dave Payne or Jeremy DeWeerd. Special thanks to Clare Kuepher and John Plas who have signed up already! The Hasting County Plowing Match will have Blondes displayed again this year. If you can volunteer for this event, please contact Eric Doran as he is looking for volunteers. The Ontario Blonde d’Aquitaine Association proudly sponsored The Youth Forum for $200, held in Lindsay earlier this spring. Junior members who participated included Machaila Dunham and Eric Doran. We would love to see more Blonde breeders make their way to Junior Shows across the province!

We are waiting on the final bull test station to finish its test to tally the results for the President’s Cup. Our bull numbers are down from previous years. Hopefully, we’ll have more bulls consigned to test stations and participating in the performance program next year! The Board of Directors has approved the 2016-17 Performance Program again with $1000 available to our members. Some new changes have been made and will be posted to our website when made available or contact the Performance Chair Dave Payne for more details. Things to look forward to: Jeremy is looking into new merchandise for us! Possibly we’ll get a sneak peak at the picnic on some new merchandise. Mary Ellen may not have the only edition of the t-shirt from our AGM!

ART BREITKREUZ

March 16, 1939 to May 9, 2016 du 16 Mars 1939 au 9 mai 2016

Art and his wife Sharon operated “Arsha Blondes” near Carnwood, Alberta. Both Art & Sharon supported the breed in Alberta as Directors of the Alberta Blonde Association, attending various shows and consigning to Association bull tests. Art had other passions as well. The farm was robustly fenced with heavy duty panels that he spent hours fabricating and welding, and he sold many times more to local ranchers. He had a great love of farming in general, and John Deere tractors. In fact he had recently purchased a long desired JD tractor before he passed. As with many other breeders, Art and Sharon’s first introduction to the breed was using Blonde bulls on their commercial cows, and liking the results. The first Fullblood/Purebred calves were born in the spring of 1992 after being purchased in dam from Blon Dell and Van Alta Blondes the previous fall. Arsha Blondes was one of the first operations in Canada to focus on Polled Fullblood genetics, and bulls such as Canadian Gold Polled Dandy, MVF Grandeur, Maple Valley Polled Bill, RHEO Lancaster and of course Arsha Lava have walked their pastures. In recent years, bulls such as Arsha’s Polled Trooper 67T and Arsha’s Polled Umpire 219U made the breeding program a worldwide name as their genetics now reside in many countries around the globe. Umpire was also the 2010 National Champion Bull, and Arhsa Blondes was named Premier Breeder at that show. It was very fitting as Art and Sharon had donated a heifer as a fundraiser for the Alberta Association, and Art had also stated it would be his last event. Well 2013 rolled around, and Arsha cattle were again on display at the National Show. Art’s love of cattle and the Blonde breed had compelled him to participate once more despite having sold the main cowherd in the fall of 2012, and we were glad to have him in attendance one last time.
