“Alone we can do so little; together, we can do so much.” ~ HELEN KELLER
Make Your Village!
Like many of you, I grew up in a small rural town. I’ve relocated a couple of times, but today I still live in a (different) small, rural town in Wisconsin. Over the years in my career with the Holstein World and Cowsmopolitan, I’ve had the privilege of seeing so many rural towns across the US and Canada - some thriving, some not. We’ve all heard the phrase ‘it takes a village.’ But what happens when your village starts to fade away?
Earlier this summer, thanks to some extensive road construction, I found myself traveling the back roads through my home county. I hadn’t been on some of these routes for more than twenty years, and reality vs memory was stark at times. A few towns and villages were reduced almost down to zero, but there were some that were obviously holding their own, even growing. The ‘whys’ of rural depopulation or rural growth are complex, but the towns that were flourishing have a determined energy that make me cheer!
Fundamentally, the citizens of those prospering towns are still leaning into where they live. They still support the local hardware store, the local grocery store, the small engine repair guy, the independent garage, and the hometown florist. Those businesses in turn buy advertising in the local paper, which is a vital ingredient to maintaining a sense of community in a small town. The local paper covers the ‘boring’ business of local government; a crucial watchful eye. The local paper celebrates the achievements of our neighbors and kids - from the football team to the honor roll to the groundbreaking on a new building to the latest hole-in-one at the golf course. That paper tells us who has been blessed with newborn babies, and tells us who has passed on. People that celebrate and grieve together stay connected and stay committed to their community.
Now, of course, I still make my trips to Home Depot, and pick up some groceries on a Target or Wal-Mart stop. I’m not suggesting we abandon those necessary errand runs. Those stores undoubtedly sell the goods cheaper. But I’ve also seen main streets decimated by the big box stores. You have too. The empty storefronts, the empty newspaper office, the local diner closing up - all of those places where you used to see
people standing and visiting with their neighbors on a sunny, summer morning. Once that’s gone, it’s so hard to get back, maybe impossible.
Hometown businesses also invest in the community in personal, unique ways that the big stores never can. They sponsor the Little League teams; they buy the 4-H livestock auction animals at the fair; they donate materials or money to the kid working on his Eagle Scout project; they know your name. If you appreciate their efforts, they need the support of some of your shopping dollars.
But that sense of community isn’t just about local business, it’s also about backing the other, smaller ventures that are a steady diet in small towns. Get your car washed by the volleyball team raising money for new uniforms. Make the time on a Friday evening to attend the latest production at the local or high school theater group. Walk or run in the 5K that’s donating proceeds to the animal shelter. Make sure you have a streetside seat for the parade held during your town festival. Better yet, find a way to participate in the parade!
And I think it’s even smaller moments than that. Maybe it’s just waving to anyone walking on your road, buying an oversweet glass of lemonade from kids with a street-side stand, going to an activity at the town library, stopping to watch the softball league games on a warm, quiet evening, or helping someone get their packages from their car into the post office.
Small towns aren’t for everyone, but they are a gift to those of us who cherish these communities. They can’t sustain themselves; they need us to make that village.
We’re rolling into the last half of summer - all the big fall events are coming around the corner! Stay in touch and stay connected with your dairy cattle village - follow show and event coverage on cowsmo.com and be sure your subscription is up-to-date - we’ve gots lots to share!
See you at ringside!

The Zeldenrijk Family Dutch Cheese Makers to Ontario Creamery
Hailing from a long line of cheese makers from the Gouda region of the Netherlands, Nicolaas and Wilma Zelderijk brought their passion for both cheese making and dairy farming to Ontario, Canada, where they settled in 2001. Their rich family heritage inspired them to establish ‘New Galma Dairy’ in Mount Elgin, located in Oxford County.
The origin of the name “New Galma Dairy” and central to their legacy is the name “Galma”, which traces back to Nicolaas Zeldenrijk’s grandfather who bought two cows, Galis and Marie. These seemingly ordinary cows became the foundation of the herd, and the operation name pays tribute to them.
Today, New Galma Dairy is a family-run operation owned and led by Nicolaas and Wilma, with their children actively participating in various roles. Lars, their eldest son, along with his wife Elora, manages the original farm established in 2001. Lars oversees all aspects of herd management while Elora handles the calf division and regional sales at the creamery. Marcella, their eldest daughter, helps out in the sales department at the creamery, while Kimmely, the youngest daughter, participates in cheesemaking and handles social media. Bren, their youngest son, assists on both the home farm and the new dairy facility whenever his school schedule allows. Family plays a central role in their success story.
Where it all began – Timeline & Expansion
By 2010, the dairy had expanded significantly, and doubled the herd size to approximately 120 cows. This initial growth was centered at the home farm. However, by 2012, the need for more advanced facilities became evident, leading to the construction of a new robot barn. This state-of-the-art facility, equipped with four robots, efficiently managed the jump in herd size to 200 cows.
In 2001, the decision was made to settle in Mount Elgin, Oxford County. Their chosen location had only a few old sheds, but the family was undeterred by the lack of existing infrastructure and built the dairy from scratch. The initial milking setup installed was a double 7 milking parlour with 80 kgs of quota capable of accommodating about 60 cows. To begin operations, two loads of commercial cows were imported from the United States.
By 2018, the farm’s operations outgrew the home location, prompting the development of a new barn at a different site. The new location transformed an old pig farm into a modern dairy facility. This expansion was facilitated by the DFO new entrant 35 kgs quota acquired, which was later enhanced to 100 milking cows.
The farm’s progress continued with the completion of the new heifer barn on Christmas Day 2022, marking another significant milestone. Simultaneously, the farm initiated the construction of a cheese plant, which was completed between July and September 2023.
The home farm operates state-of-the-art facilities and their grassfed cows enjoy free-stall robots. Here the average production is 28 litres (about 65 lbs.) with a 4.5% Fat and 3.1% Protein. This farm focuses more on consistency to ensure a steady quality for cheese production. New Galma Dairy enjoys a 10-cent premium on its milk, contingent on grazing requirements for at least 120 days a year. This milk is sold to Green Meadows, a company known for its commitment to grass-fed dairy products.
The home farm accommodates 210 cows, utilizing four robotic milkers and pioneering automated feeding technology. They’ve also implemented an innovative automated bedding system, utilizing overhead rails to maintain cleanliness by managing manure solids while cows remain comfortably in their stalls.
The new farm boasts a 38-40 litre average (about 85 lbs.) with a 4.2% Fat and 3.4% Protein with over 50% first lactation cows. This farm has a total of 100 milking cows with two additional robotic milking systems.
The Creamery
On October 16, 2023, New Galma Dairy produced their first batch of cheese. The farm produces about 1600 litres of milk per week for cheese production. This amount is set to increase to 2,500 litres daily to make cheese multiple times per week, significantly expanding their cheese output. The cheese side of the business is poised for growth, with plans to create special cheeses using grass-fed milk.
During the planning of the creamery, their daughter Kimmely embarked on her journey to learn cheesemaking. She began by studying Dutch-style cheese making in the Netherlands, aligning with their desire to honor their heritage with a range of natural and spiced Gouda-style cheeses of various sizes. Upon returning, Kimmely furthered her education in British Columbia, where Dutch Canadians had refined this craft.
Currently, their storefront features an array of cheese flavors, including popular choices like chili pepper, Italian, onion garlic, and the highly sought-after cumin-flavored cheese. Their fenugreek wheels, known for their nutty taste with hints of maple syrup, are also a fast-selling favorite. Despite the labor-
intensive nature of cheese making, the Zeldenrijks find joy in creating a product that not only reflects their heritage but also
At New Galma Dairy, maintaining the highest standards of milk for cheese production is crucial. The family-run farm is dedicated to achieving just that through meticulous breeding practices
For over five years, the farm has committed to using 100% sexed semen to ensure the production of high-quality milk. Additionally, the farm has incorporated Aberdeen Angus beef, accounting for 80% of their beef breeding program. Breeding goals on the farm are intricately linked to both milk and cheese production. The focus is on traits such as A2A2 BB fat, essential for cheese, while maintaining high-quality genetics. The farm’s breeding strategy also aims for excellence in show cattle, with aspirations for a grand champion at the county show and a class winner at the Royal.
The use of top-tier bulls like Lambda and Sidekick highlights the farm’s dedication to both type and milk production. Lambda, described as a “once-in-a-lifetime” bull, excels in robotic milking systems and has a strong will to milk, making him a standout choice. Sidekick, though siring slower-maturing cows, has remained valuable for breeding high-type cattle. Other stand out sires in the herd include Sandy-Valley R Conway, Croteau Lesperon Unix, S-S-I PR Renegade, and Golden-Oak Master. This balanced approach between type and production extends across both the new and main farms, demonstrating a consistent breeding strategy aimed at optimizing both milk quality and show success.
Cow Families
The Zeldenrijk family is deeply dedicated to prominent cow families where success often runs through generations. Among these, the Elegance and Ashlea families stand out as a testament to both pedigree and performance, and their barn proudly houses descendants from these foundation families.
New Galma Gold Chip Araceli EX-92-2E-CAN 4* is a notable descendant from Resons Inquirer Ashlea EX-92-3E-CAN 2*. Ashlea was purchased in the Resons herd dispersal in 2008, and left six daughters at New Galma. Out of an EX-92-2E-CAN 4* Damion, Gold Chip Araceli, a granddaughter of Ashlea, boasts remarkable production and fertility. She’s made impressive lactation records: 14,000 litres (30,800 lbs) in her second lactation and 16,800 litres (37,000 lbs) in her third. With one EX and ten VG daughters already, her impact is sure to be felt through the coming years with over 50 descendants on farm. Araceli’s oldest daughter, Solomon Adeline, is a standout scored EX-93 and won the 4-year-old class at the 2022 Oxford County Show.
Oakfield Gold Chip Efron EX-94-USA, is a ninth generation Excellent from the Elegance family - those nine generations average 93 points. From the (Dundee) Edair EX-95 branch of the Elegances, Efron is starting to make her impact within the herd through her daughters. Her first milking daughter, New Galma Sidekick Edair, recently scored VG-87 as a two-year old - attaining the maximum score. Efron is actively on the flush program and has 15 more descendants on the ground sired by Lambda, Sidekick, Alligator, and Eye Candy.
Another noteworthy member of the herd includes Oakfield HO Fastball VG-88-CAN, a High Octane maternal sister to Oakfield Solomon Footloose EX-97, the Supreme Champion of World Dairy Expo in 2022. They’ve also invested in the Bosdale Portrait family, and look forward to shaping their own narrative with the Portraits. Excellence shines through in their last classification report: 11 VG 2-year-olds, with 2 at VG-86, 1 achieving an 87-max score; and 3 newly classified as EX. The herd’s average final score is 84.7.
As the herd continues to evolve towards their ideal type, they want to continue with their high standard of showmanship at upcoming events. Both Lars and Bren have earned numerous showmanship awards, with Lars securing a prestigious win in the senior showmanship contest at the World Dairy Expo in 2016. Following in his brother’s footsteps, Bren claimed first place in the junior showmanship category at the 2022 TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.
Looking to the future
Looking ahead, the family’s discussions have centered on future projects and ways to improve their operations. One exciting prospect is the introduction of bottled milk and possibly milk vending machines where customers can fill their own bottles.
The farm’s vision for milk and cheese sales is locally-focused, targeting communities in Tillsonburg, Ingersoll, and Mount Elgin. This local approach ensures quality and develops a strong connection with the community. Cheese production, on the other hand, has more ambitious goals, aiming to reach broader markets such as cheese shops, restaurants, and wineries. Their cheese is currently available in-store as well as local cheese shops and Wayne Gretzky Estates Winery located in Niagara, ON.
The farm’s journey from its early days to its current state reflects a blend of innovation, tradition, and community focus. Each decision, whether it’s expanding cheese production or introducing new breeding strategies, is made with a clear vision of maintaining high standards and ensuring the wellbeing of the herd. Their creativity, hard work, and unwavering commitment to their vision have laid the foundation for future generations to build upon.

Mention the Brown Swiss show at International Dairy Week (IDW) or the Brown Swiss breed in Australia and odds are the very next name you’ll hear is Tandara. Breeder Ben Govett has been attending IDW since its inception and the Tandara prefix is synonymous with champion Brown Swiss at the show. The Govett family has won more Premier Breeder and Exhibitor titles at IDW than any other exhibitor, and 2024 was no exception when they took home the Junior Show and overall Breeder & Exhibitor banners, in spite of challenges with flooding at home only a week before the show.
Located about an hour and a half west of the show grounds in Tatura, and just over two hours northwest of Melbourne in north central Victoria, the Tandara herd consists of 300 head - about half Holstein and half Brown Swiss with a few Jerseys and Illawarras for good measure. Operating on about 1500 acres, the cows run on pasture in the traditional Australian management style, and are milked in a 40-cow rotary parlor. Ben’s parents, Bill & Judy, started milking with a Jersey herd, and Ben himself started dairying at 15 years of age with Jerseys as well. Aside from the time away at the University of Melbourne to obtain a degree in Animal Science, Ben has been a part of the operation his whole life. His parents are still active on the farm, while Ben and his partner, Michaela Shrimpton, run the day-to-day operations.
Brown Swiss made their appearance on the farm about 40 years ago after a family friend of Bill and Judy’s returned from the US where they had seen some Swiss and were impressed by their scope and production. The Govetts appreciated the hardiness of the breed, and began breeding their Jerseys to Swiss as well as investing in genetics from abroad. Today, about half of the
Brown Swiss herd comes from purebred genetics from North America and about half are the results of the original graded up animals.
One of their best families traces back to a Canadian-bred cow, Terra Nova Sarajevo EX-95, who was Grand Champion at the Royal Winter Fair in 1987 for Jim Walker and Ken Bender. The imported eggs from her laid the foundation for many, many Champions at IDW and other Royal shows across Australia. Their Lola family is another source of high type and show winners, and with those two families powering the show string, Tandara has won the Premier Breeder and Exhibitor banner every year for the past decade, and prior to 2024, had bred the IDW Champion Brown Swiss for eight straight years.
In 2024, the Govetts won seven classes and saw their junior 2-year-old, Tandara Dairystar Lola 99, named Intermediate Champion of the show. Never afraid to sell a good one, Lola 99 was consigned to the ST Create The Future Sale, held in
conjunction with the show, where she was the third-high seller at $18,000 and was purchased by Loxby Brown Swiss of Laceby, Victoria. That purchase had echoes of their 2022 consignment to the sale, Tandara Glenwood Heidi 303, who was Reserve Intermediate Champion that year, and sold to Maddy and Shelby Foot for an Australian Brown Swiss record price of $27,000.
In addition to all of those winning Brown Swiss, Ben is also well-known as one of three partners, including good friends Daniel Bacon of Brookbora Jerseys and Glen Gordon of Gorbro Holsteins, that exhibited one of the all-time great IllawarraWallumlands Sunstorm 8 EX-95. Between 2015 and 2019, Sunstorm was a four-time Grand Champion at IDW, and twice won the Supreme Champion title for the partnership.
At the farmstead, visitors see the calves housed in a paddock next to the milking parlor, and straight away notice the straight lines, deep rib and outstanding feet and legs. Those traits were very evident at the Brown Swiss show held just a few days earlier, where Tandara exhibited a number of heifers sired by Aldo SG, a bull sourced from Swissgenetics that was not available in North America. Ben thinks he has some of the oldest Aldo daughters, and is excited to see them calve in, as he likes the bull’s type and udder linear showing through a balanced proof.
Tandara Dairystar Lola 99 was named Intermediate Champion at the 2024 International Dairy Week and later told for $18,000 in the ST Create the Future
Those thoughts sum up Ben’s overall breeding philosophy across the herd. “The cows have got to have milk, and obviously, we like high type. I look for balanced linears, and we keep an eye on DPR. We do a lot of ET work, so if a cow isn’t in the top 25% of the herd, she’s probably getting an embryo. We look at US numbers and linears the most, along with info on bulls from Europe. Our BPI system here in Australia is geared more for commercial dairy producers, while we are always selecting for higher type traits. Primarily, we source our sires through New Generation Genetics from the US, and Swissgenetics from Europe,” Ben explains. They run an extensive IVF program in the spring and fall - last spring, they collected 150 embryos to implant in the herd.
Recent Brown Swiss bulls that left good cows in the herd include Carter and Biver, while Glenwood and Dairystar have sired the most exciting two-year-olds. Ben is also enthusiastic about the calves from younger sires he’s using, including Aldo, Collaps, and Ray, and admits it’s gotten easier to pick Swiss bulls as the genetics have gotten more modern.
Holstein sires that have worked well include Solomon (a bull that worked tremendously well in almost all of the herds we visited, both as a sire of daughters, and as a brood cow sire); King Doc, and Ben really likes his two-year-olds sired by DG NH Arrow. After attending World Dairy Expo in 2022, he appreciated the winning cows sired by Unix, and has used him selectively in the herd with good results. Just like with the Brown Swiss, they’ve invested in prominent Holstein cow families over the years, and you see descendants of the Jessicas, Spades, and Footloose just to name a few. Recently, he’s used Hulu, Dropbox, and Havelock as service and flush sires in the Holstein herd.
Ben and his family fought hard to get to the 2024 edition of IDW, as just the week before, the farm was ravaged by a massive flood event. “The day we were supposed to be setting up at the show, we were fighting to save the farm from going underwater. We seem to be going in a weather pattern where we get rainfall events where we get two or three inches at a time and our grounds just aren’t set up for it. We’re flat here and that much rain at a time just wrecks things. We have seen weather extremes in the past couple of decades, from a 10year drought to the worst flood Victoria had ever seen in 2011. Four years later, it was a wet year where the cows just suffered. We lost more money that year than in all the drought years. Then we had some normal years before 2022, when we had another 1000 year flood, and now again just before the show, terrible flooding.”
Plans for the future include building a barn where the cows can eat, lay down and get out of the extremes, whether that’s the summer heat or wet conditions. “What I want to do for the future is to build a shed. I still want to run cows on grass, but basically, I want to be able to protect the cows. The herd is worth a lot of money. In 2022, I got home from
Wallumlands Sunstorm 8 EX-95 was a 4X Illawara Grand Champion and twice Supreme Champion at IDW.
Sale to Loxby Brown Swiss.
World Dairy Expo and the farm was underwater. Everything was underwater except the house. The cows lived in water for four days. They’d already caught it pretty hard, because it was already wet. It was pretty heartbreaking to watch your herd of cows just suffer. Something with a concrete feed alley and a loafing area to protect them from those wet, extreme events, but mainly for summer because it’s always hot. We could really maximize production and efficiency then; we lose a lot because of the heat in the summer.”
Ben says he’d love to milk only about 150 cows, but it’s not feasible financially. To protect the herd and their investment, building some type of structure has to be at the forefront of their planning. “We lost half a million dollars in milk production in 2022 because the cows were just miserable, and we lost two years worth of fodder that was out in the paddocks. So I just realized if I want to keep going, that’s what I had to do. Everything is double or triple the price to build now than it was five years ago, so the investment in building means I’m tied to it for 15 years, but that’s OK.”
A short drive down the lane takes us into the herd that is out on an annual pasture that is typically resown every year in February or March with clover and rye and it is watered through the year. Because of all the moisture in the week before the show and the cooler temperatures, the pasture was still quite lush when we visited in January a few days after the IDW show, where typically it would be gone by November or December. The pasture walk reveals a mixed Brown Swiss and Holstein herd with a smattering of Jerseys and Illawarras. No matter the breed, the cows display loads of dairy strength and width with tremendous udders and feet and legs - exactly what you need for cows that make the daily trek to pasture and graze their own forage throughout the day.
The herd is classified regularly, about three times a year. The Holstein classifier will do all breeds except the Jerseys, whose breed association score their own. In addition to scoring, the Govetts genomic test almost everything in the herd through STgenetics.
Ben is an experienced judge having officiated at every Royal Show in Australia and having several assignments abroad, including the New Zealand Dairy Event. This past March, a trip to England to judge the Holsteins, Brown Swiss, and Shorthorns at the Borderway UK Dairy Expo was an enjoyable experience shared with friend Daniel Bacon, who placed the Jersey, Red & White, and Ayrshire classes.
While acknowledging the challenges of dairying in their location, the hardships haven’t dulled Ben Govett’s enthusiasm for seeing and breeding good cows of every color, whether it’s officiating at a show on another continent or breeding more champions for International Dairy Week!
By Kathleen O’Keefe
The day we were supposed to be setting up at the show, we were fighting to save the farm from going underwater. We seem to be going in a weather pattern where we get rainfall events where we get two or three inches at a time and our grounds just aren’t set up for it. We’re flat here and that much rain at a time just wrecks things. We have seen weather extremes in the past couple of decades, from a 10-year drought to the worst flood Victoria had ever seen in 2011. Four years later, it was a wet year where the cows just suffered. We lost more money that year than in all the drought years. Then we had some normal years before 2022, when we had another 1000 year flood, and now again just before the show, terrible flooding.”
BEN GOVETT ON THE WEATHER CHALLENGES IN VICTORIA
Ben, left, is an experienced cattle judge, recently traveling to the United Kingdom to judge at the UK Borderway Expo in March 2024.
Historic flooding throughout the region made farming difficult for everyone, with record losses.

IN MEMORIAM - KEN ELLIOT
Kenneth “Ken” Neal Elliott, a devoted husband, loving father, and respected figure in the dairy industry, passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2024, after a courageous battle with ALS also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was born on April 21, 1958, in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, to Murray and Marion (Neal) Elliott. Ken peacefully departed this world at the age of 66 in Marshall, Wisconsin, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, dedication, and profound love for his family and his passion.
Ken’s early years were spent on his family’s Holstein farm in Ontario, Canada, where he cultivated a deep appreciation for agriculture. He pursued his education at Ridgetown College, Ontario, Canada, where he was a member of the winning collegiate dairy judging team. Following college, Ken worked for Allengrove Holstein in Ontario before relocating to California, where he worked for Marvin and Vivian Nunes of Ocean-View Holsteins. Vivian Nunes introduced Ken to Kathy Duarte at a Holstein event where their love grew from there.
Ken and Kathy were united in marriage on July 21, 1984, and together they became partners in Kathy’s family dairy, Duarte-Acres Holsteins, in Ceres, California. In 1995, they embarked on a new chapter, moving to Marshall, Wisconsin, to start their own farm, Partee Holstein & Jerseys. When Ken arrived in Wisconsin in the Spring of 1995, he was quickly greeted by Harry Weier who welcomed the Elliotts to Wisconsin and became a lifetime friend. Shortly after Ken settled into their new farm, he purchased three registered Jerseys which started their journey with Jersey cattle. That ignited a passion for exhibiting registered animals at local, state, and national shows, where they achieved remarkable success, boasting numerous class winners, champions, and All-Americans.
Ken’s contributions to the dairy industry extended beyond the show ring. He dedicated two decades of service as the Holstein superintendent at World Dairy Expo, demonstrating his unwavering
commitment and love for the show. Ken’s tireless efforts were recognized when he was honored as a Friend of World Dairy Expo in 2021. Also in 2021, the Klussendorf Memorial Association awarded Ken with the 18th honorary Klussendorf Trophy.
Throughout his battle with ALS, Ken remained surrounded by the love and support of his family and friends. He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy Elliott; his daughters, Amber Elliott (Owen Keller) and Laura (David) Tresslar; and his siblings, Ralph Elliott and Margaret Niesen. Ken was preceded in death by his father, Murray Elliott; his brother-in-law, Joe Niesen; and his father and mother-in-law, Joe and Mary Duarte.
In addition to his family, Ken leaves behind a multitude of friends and colleagues in the dairy industry who cherished his friendship and admired his dedication. The Elliott family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Maria Johnson of Marshall, Wisconsin, for her care and companionship during Ken’s final years, as well as to Dr. Fertikah of UW Health Neuromuscular Disorders Clinic and the ALS Association of Wisconsin for their unwavering support.
Ken’s legacy of passion for the dairy industry, dedication, distinguished mustache, and kindness will forever live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the honor of crossing paths with him.
A celebration of life will take place at a later time. In lieu of flowers, Ken’s family requests Memorial Donations to ALS Association of Wisconsin.

A Leap of Faith & a Dream THE PEILA FAMILY
Quickly becoming a hit in the hilltowns of Massachusetts, Peila’s Creamery in Gill has come a long way with the help of family and shared passion for great cows! Tracing back to 2006, Sunrise Valley Farm was started by Brian and Keri Peila where they milked 100 head of Holsteins on a rented farm in Northfield, MA. As the years went on, their ideas of purchasing all of their feed and having minimal equipment started to shift and they purchased land to grow their own crops. By 2011, the farm they had rented sold and they were left looking for somewhere new to farm. For the last twelve years, they have been renting a farm in Gill where they currently milk 80 cows in a tie-stall barn. The herd is grazed rotationally from early May until the middle of November. Each member of the family has their role on the farm day-to-day. Brian and Keri’s oldest, Brian Jr, graduated from high school in 2021 with welding skills and has put them to use on the farm as he is responsible for all equipment repairs, in addition to all of the fieldwork and leading the custom harvesting business. Their daughter, Samantha, graduated high school in 2023 where she studied as a vet tech. Sam has also returned to the farm and is responsible for herd health, record keeping, as well as caring for the young stock. The youngest, Ben, does daily chores after school and feeds calves every night. Keri and Brian are very thankful for their family’s help and say it has been very rewarding to work with them daily.
While the Peila family added jerseys very slowly to the milking herd, when COVID hit, the quota program became a problem. Over the course of the grazing months, they would milk about 20-30 more cows and then sell any cows they did not have room for come winter. In 2020, their quota was 80,000 lbs under what
their production in May was that year, and they would not be able to continue farming had they continued to overproduce. Keri, who for those who know her is more of a Holstein girl at heart, was the one to suggest adding more Jerseys into the herd. This would lower the amount of milk made while increasing components to maximize the highest pay price. This also lowered the amount of feed needed, which also helped expenses. Currently, the farm is half Jerseys and half Holsteins, although 75% of young stock is Jerseys.
From the time Brian got his first calf from his father, all he had ever dreamed of doing was making it better. Constantly trying to improve, even if you were already happy with what you were looking at. He was taught at a young age to be able to see the potential in animals and he believes that is where he fell in love with genetics. “My number one goal is longevity. I love milking cows daily, so beautiful cows are what we breed for,” says Peila.
My number one goal is longevity. I love milking cows daily, so beautiful cows are what we breed for.”
BRIAN PEILA
The Peila family was named both Premier Breeder & Exhibitor at the 2023 Massachusetts State Jersey Show.
Although it has not always been smooth sailing in this crazy world we all know and love. The challenges that were thrown at the family allowed them to grow closer and helped them realize how important everyone is on the farm.
While the family may have decided that milking is the most peaceful time of the day, Brian and his daughter, Sam, seemed to have “caught the bug” and both have their favorite shows and reasons why! Brian says the best part of showing cattle is socializing with his fellow breeders and sharing all their ideas. A true testament to their hard work and careful breeding decisions is the accumulation of Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor banners they have achieved over the last few years in the Jersey breed at various shows.
This last classification, Sunrise Valley Farm had their first Excellent 95-point cow that they developed. Apocalypse Fire Madison, is a 7-year-old aged cow who had a successful year in the show ring as well in 2023. Sired by Colton Flame Fireman, Madison was bred by Gary and Sara Gibbs from Slate Hill, NY. Madison was first aged cow at the Massachusetts State Jersey Show and first aged cow and HM Senior Champion at the Northeast Jersey Classic at The Big E. In April, Madison was named HM Grand Champion of the Northeast All-Breeds Spring Jersey Junior Show. They are excited for the rest of this year with Madison as she is an easyto-work-with, stress-free cow who breeds back each year. Her oldest daughter, sired by River Valley Cece Chrome, is classified EX-91% at 4-04 and her granddaughter, sired by Casino, is scored VG-88% at 2-05. They also have daughters of Madison by River Valley Victorious and Kash-In Knox.
The Peila family always strive for the “breeder banners” but recognize the purchased animals in their herd that are helping lay a great foundation as they plan to increase their Jersey numbers. Cows to mention are JX TNT Harris Dollar, EX-94%, who was Grand Champion at the Massachusetts State Jersey Show in 2022; Budjon Colton G-Force EX-91%; Ty-Ly-View Fizz Parvati EX92%; Rivendale Metallica Doll EX-92%; Arethusa Premier Vivine EX-90%; and Cowbell Rockstar Calgary EX-91%.
A few young cows Peila mentioned that he believes will be great cows in the future are Mill Valley SVF September, MM-T Pockets
family’s first 95-point cow they have developed and she named HM Grand
Andreas Sugar, Zubi Kalahari Violet, Foxfield Victorious Glenda, and Tierneys Chrome Taryn. The favorite cows of the herd consist of their highest scoring homebred cow, Peila’s-SVF Tequila Nancy, affectionately known as “Chubs,” who is classified EX-94% and backed by ten generations of Very Good or Excellent dams. Another favorite is a 4-year-old for this show season, Peila’s-SVF Verb Casper, classified EX-93% MAX. Casper is a work in progress as far as breaking her to lead goes, although both cows excel in production and look good doing it!
The Peila family, while taking pride in their cows for their looks, also have used their top-quality milk to open a farm store where they bottle and sell fresh cream line milk, cheese curds, yogurt, as well as other local products. This idea of an on-farm processing plant came to be in about 2012 when they purchased a herd of cows from a farm that produced drinkable yogurt. Years of thought and patience were well worth the wait when they passed all inspections and opened the store last winter! A challenge they faced upon opening the farm store was learning to balance the day-to-day chores of the farm while giving proper attention to both the farm and the plant. The goal of opening
Mill Valley SVF September VG-87% was Reserve Intermediate Champion of the Northeast All-Breeds Spring Junior Jersey Show in 2024.
the farm store was to ensure another source of income for the kids and their wishes to return to the farm full-time. During quota adding numbers to the herd was not a feasible option, making their plan to fill the quota and as their sales increased, continue to add to the herd to supplement the plant.
Having various products in the store allows for a wide array of customers who are willing to not only support local but also allow the Peila family to try new things and gauge how popular items are. Currently, the most popular item selling in the farm store is their cream line chocolate milk. A unique flavor they sell is maple, made with their own maple syrup, which is also gaining some ground in popularity. Brian’s favorite product to make is cheese curds. He reminisces on his dad bringing cheese home from several farms and how he always loved farmer’s cheese. Currently, the farm not only produces for the on-farm store but is also in several other stores with the goal of being in 40-50 by the end of the one-year mark. Their favorite part of the store being on the farm is interaction with their customers. The store and their products have become quite popular locally and with their friends and family. Each post on social media gains support and questions of “Can you bring chocolate milk??” or “Will you have cheese curds at the show?!” flow in from people all over the Northeast. Shaping the store up to be a successful venture for the Peila family!
With a leap of faith and a dream, Sunrise Valley Farm was started in 2006 with the goal of raising great cattle and great kids. In the last 18 years, the Peila family raised a family, grew the business of the farm, and started a new venture, Peila’s Creamery. Striving to always do better, new goals keep getting made and then met. Watch for the Peila’s-SVF prefix in the coming years and the Peila’s Creamery label for a quality, delicious product made by the people who love the cows!

IN MEMORIAM
- MARTIN “BUD” YODER
Martin “Bud” Yoder, 49 years old, took his last breath of life on this earth June 29, 2024, with his wife at his side.
Martin Wesley Yoder was born to John Junior and Lois Marie Yoder on March 8, 1975. His father nicknamed Martin “Bud” as he was the youngest of 8 children. Bud grew up on a farm near West Salem, Ohio; he lived and breathed farm life, from the first word he learned to spell – CASE (tractor) – to joining the local Wayne County 4-H Program.
In high school, Bud played basketball and was an active member of the Northwestern FFA. He graduated from Northwestern High School in 1993. Following graduation, Bud attended Rosedale Bible Institute, where he enjoyed friendships, and participated in the RBI drama productions.
After RBI, Bud spent many years fitting cattle for shows and sales across the world in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Brazil.
Bud developed a special relationship with Jim and Nancy Kemp when he worked for them as their cattle herdsman. Later, he also worked for David Hershey in the same capacity. While Martin loved working with cattle, he found his next calling working alongside Roger Baker. After a long stint with Roger, who almost succeeded at turning him into a Hollywood star (hear the full story at the service), Bud’s desire to be his own boss led him to start a hoof trimming business which he successfully operated for eight years.
Bud always said he did not want to “just marry a woman he could live with,” but to “marry a woman he couldn’t live without.” When he found the woman he couldn’t live without, he promptly sold his thriving business, his house, and moved to Canada, to marry Sarah (Donaldson) on June, 28, 2014.
Bud and Sarah wasted no time starting a family. Nine months and one week after the wedding, they welcomed their daughter, Mikaela Joy Yoder on April 3, 2015. Bud started working on Sarah’s family’s farm,
and quickly became the go-to man and took the role with a charismatic willingness. Soon after, Sarah and Bud, started their own farm, Golden Gate Farms. They built a state of the art Lely robotic milking and feeding system and were a model farm for many tours. Bud enjoyed having farmers from all over the world tour the farm and discuss both older and more progressive farming methods.
In 2018, Bud and Sarah welcomed their son, John Wesley Yoder to complete their family. Bud lived to farm, and to enjoy the company of his family. He included his family in everything he did and wanted to pursue. He enjoyed family trips, side by side trips, traveling to Madison, Wisconsin for World Dairy Expo to exhibit his cows.
He was a true showman, and always displayed a true example to youth and fellow friends in his everyday actions.
Bud attended Bradner Presbyterian Church ad was active in the ministry. He was a true shepherd in how he lived. He lived by God’s word, and shared and taught his children all life’s lessons from its pages.
Bud was preceded in death by his father, John Junior Yoder (2014) and father-in-law Rob Donaldson (2022).
He leaves behind his loving wife of 10 years, Sarah Yoder and two children Mikaela Joy Yoder (9) and John Wesley Yoder (6). He is survived by his mother Lois Yoder, Wooster, OH; his siblings Linda (James) Nissley, Tuscon, AZ; Delbert (Heather) Yoder, West Salem, OH; Daniel Yoder, Apple Creek, OH; Glenda (Marvin) Zuercher, Wooster, OH; Myron Yoder, Centerville, OH; Anita (Ryan) Hostetler, Mechanicsburg, OH; Marla Yoder, Columbus, OH. Bud will also be greatly missed by his many nephews and nieces. He always had a way of making each one feel like they were his favorite.
JX TNT Harris Dollar EX-94% was Grand Champion of the 2022 Massachusetts State Jersey Show in 2022.
European Young Breeders' School A European Tradition and a U.S. First!
It’s an annual event highly anticipated by young dairy enthusiasts in both in Europe and around the world - the European Young Breeders’ School, which takes place each year in Battice, Belgium. Founded in 1999 to improve the skills of Belgian, French, Dutch and German youth, the school is aimed at young people aged 13 to 25 with the aim to help them to better understand, assess, and prepare cattle for exhibition.
In 2024, 29 teams from 18 countries will be taking part in EYBS, including a team from the US for the first time. That makes a total of 170 participants heading to Belgium from August 28th to September 1st for five days of education and competition.
Once in Belgium, the participants take part in three days of training covering many topics pertaining to showing and marketing cattle, then put those lessons to good use the following two days when they compete against each other in showmanship and conformation classes.
gets to work preparing the animals to look their best for show day. Throughout the week, the emphasis is on teamwork and the participation of each member is rated during all stages of the heifer preparation.
The first three days are filled with a series of workshops, taught by experienced leaders, where the young people are instructed in the techniques of pack preparation, washing, clipping, judging, showmanship, feeding, marketing, and more. With youth coming from around the globe, the training is provided in four languages: French, German, English, and Dutch.
Each country team is made up of four to six young people, and countries can send more than one team. The teams are housed with more than 40 host families who are breeders in the Wallonia region, the French-speaking area in southern Belgium. This immersion into the daily life of local dairy farms promotes discovery of other cultures, and develops friendships that last beyond the days of the
The participants are each provided a Holstein heifer free of charge by breeders in Wallonia. There is thought given to matching the age and size of the heifer with the participant, in order that all have a pleasant experience. Each team sets up their stalling area, and soon week’s endeavor begins as each show person
Following the training days, there are two days of competition starting with heifer conformation classes and finishing with showmanship. From those classes, the best clipper/fitter and best showman are determined as the judges select a list of the top 20 participants, as well as ranking the best overall teams. While it has historically been a Holstein competition, in 2023, the School featured a section for the Belgian Blue Breed with separate judging for those youth and animals.
Before the award ceremony that ends the event, the teams parade in with their country or school sign in a manner very reminiscent of the Olympics. Once the teams and spectators have filled the arena, the awards ceremony and celebrations begin before everyone begins the trek home.
Canada has a lengthy history of sending a team and doing very well in the competition. Last year’s team saw five members ranked in the top 12, with Felix Lemire named Champion Showman, Sarah Dean named HM Showman, and Kolton Crack finishing as the Best Fitter! Holstein Quebec also works closely with EYBS in helping to organize judges for the competition.
This year’s Canadian team includes: Kyle Vaandrager of Abbotsford, BC; Jordan Hawthorne of Listowel, ON; Sydney Cain of Paris, ON; Xavier Labbé of St-Lambert-de-Lauzon, QC; Juliette Naid of StMarc-des-Carrières, QC; and Sage Yuill of Murray Siding, NS.
2023 marked the first year New Zealand attended the school, and 2024 will be the premiere of a US team.
Dave Schmocker of Whitewater, Wisconsin was instrumental in assembling the inaugural team from the US, though he shrugs
that credit aside and points to his good friend, Erica Rijneveld, as the impetus to send a group in 2024. “I’ve known Erica for at least 20 years, back to the days when I used to go over to Europe and worked a lot of shows for Quim Serrabassa and met Erica while doing that. She works so hard and is such a perfectionistjust one of the very best. She’s been an instructor with the Young Breeders’ School for like 17 years, almost since it started, and she’s been after me for years to put a US group together. She calls me every March, and this year she called and said, ‘I signed you up and saved you a spot. You owe me $2,400.’ Well, that was the kick in the rear that got us going!,” says Dave.
Once the decision was made, the tough part was selecting the team. “It’s a big age gap: 13 to 25. We could have sent over six professional fitters, but what’s the point of that?,” he asserts. “The point is to send good kids and really try to elevate their skill level in all these areas.” He called people from around the country and set up a selection committee consisting of John Erbsen, Aaron Eaton, Lindsay Bowen, Pat Conroy, Lynn Harbaugh, Mark & Nicky Rueth, Adam Liddle, Mike & Julie Duckett, Eddie & Mandi Bue, and Chris & Jen Hill. “These are all people who’ve been doing it for 20 or 30 years, and they’re still impossible to beat unless you’re willing to work as hard as them. We announced we were putting the team together, and about 20 kids sent in resumés. The committee went through them, ranked them, and came up with the team,” explains Dave.
Members of the 2024 US team include: Lauren Silveira of Chowchilla, CA; Hayden Reichard of Chambersburg, PA; Jacob Harbaugh of Marion, WI; Alli Walker of Wisconsin Dells, WI; Stella Schmocker of Whitewater, WI; and Camyrn Crothers of Pitcher, NY.
The next step is the fundraising, and a big piece of that puzzle will be the online fundraiser on August 7th, hosted by CattleClub. com, which will see 100% of the proceeds donated to the Team USA Youth Breeders. The sale features embryos from some highprofile show cows, fitting equipment, gift certificates, and the like. “It’s $450 for the school and about $1,000 for the plane ticket, but I want all of these kids to be able to go for free. If we raise enough money, we can buy some clippers and blowers
hard when you’re into this, and your classmate are into sports, to sit on the bus and talk about the Junior Champion at Madison, you know? It’s like you’re from Mars. It’s so good for these kids to be surrounded by others who are just as passionate about the same thing,” asserts Dave.
The team is planning to fly over to Belgium a day early to get acclimated before the big, busy week starts on August 28th. The opportunity to meet other people from around the world is one of the benefits that most excites Dave. “That international exposure from meeting kids from different countries is just so cool. They’ll connect on social media, they’ll be friends, and later, maybe co-workers or business partners. We’re going over there, but those kids will visit our kids here in the US and Canada. There’s just so much good that comes out of it,” he says.
Along with his wife, Nina, the team is helping to organize the fundraiser sale and managing the Young Breeder School USA page on Facebook. Dave knows the first year of anything can be a scramble, “It’s not perfect, but it’s our first year, and we’re going to do it. We can all say we’re too busy, right? But eventually, you’ve got to prioritize things. The personal satisfaction I’ll get just from watching those kids over there…you can’t buy that on
Good luck to all the teams participating this year - we’ll be eagerly watching for the results and can’t to hear about the

COW FAMILY CORNER
THE WONDER WHISPERS!
Where have today’s genetics come from? We all know the Brown Swiss breed started with importation of a handful of Swiss in the mid-to-late 1800s. But how many of us recognize the names of the great cows that are behind today’s genetics and the stories that go with them?
Wanda, Whizzbang, Wizella, Wammy, Wonderment and so many more – the pedigrees in show and sale catalogs give us the accolades of the past five to 10 years, but what is the cow and her lineage behind that? Let’s begin with a cow that has a tremendous impact on today’s genetics, and established multiple branches from California to New England and Wisconsin to Florida.
My T Fine Whisper ‘2E90’ was bred by Linda and Duane Klumpp, Appleton, New York. She was selected as a bred heifer by Modern Associates, who were putting together an export order for Brazil. When it came time for the group of heifers to leave, Whisper was found to be open and was left behind at Top Acres in Ohio. This simple stroke of misfortune ended up establishing a dynasty that now stretches across the United States and worldwide.
Whisper calved in at 3-01 with an “exceptional udder, very dairy and was a very competitive show cow in the early 90s,” said Wayne Sliker, Top Acres, Ohio. She was Grand Champion of the Eastern National in 1991, a three-time All-American honoree and made over 118,000M before being sold to a Brazilian breeder in another export deal at the age of eight. She was flushed a few times resulting in 14 daughters and 4 sons. She made multiple records of 21,000 to 25,000 pounds of milk and over 1,100 butterfat. It is these credentials, as well as the generations before and after her, that establish her as more than ‘just a cow.’
Whisper was out of My T Fine Mistletoe scored ‘VG86,’ a LarLe Stretch Titan OCS daughter. Her dam, MT Glen Liz, ‘VG85’ was purchased by the Klumpps through the Eastern Breeders Sale series from Russell Montgomery of Connecticut. Liz was a Ventures Sunny Bruce daughter with over 129,000M 5,878F 2,645P lifetime.
Although the next several dams are not classified, the story continues with Liz’s dam, MT Glen Muffin, a daughter of Shelburne Mildred, also purchased in an Eastern Breeders Sale from Shelburne Farms of Vermont. Mildred made over 138,380M in her lifetime, not too bad for a cow born in the early 1960s. Sired by Shelburne Dangers Jackson, Mildred was out of Shelburne Ferns Kordelia, a daughter of Shelburne Fern. Fern made over 116,000M. Fern’s dam, Cornell Queen Ellen, had been purchased by Shelburne Farms from Cornell University in the mid-1950s. From the 1950s back the next 100 years, My T Fine Whisper’s pedigree can be traced to one of the first group of imports, a daughter of Geneva (#7) and William Tell (#1), Bessie (#11), born in 1872.
On her paternal side, My T Fine Whisper was sired by Johann Johnny D. He was a Nakota Destiny Dapper son from Johann Genevieve B, a ‘4E90’ Norvic Lilason’s Beautician with over 215,000M 9,167F lifetime. Johnny D was bred by the Fledderjohanns of Ohio. Other outstanding historical herd names that appear on the pedigree for Whisper include Lee’s Hill, Welcome In, Meadow View, Swiss Lea, Prairieland and Judds Bridge.
But that’s just the beginning of her story. Whisper’s progenies continue to add to today’s Brown Swiss gene pool in herds across this continent. Sliker stated that she was flushed several times before leaving. One of her last flushes, he stated, was to Bridge View Elegant Jade the morning before she left for Brazil.
“About this same time,” said Sliker, “Mike Hellenbrand was beginning his City Slickers operation and looking for some quality Swiss to begin his program. We sold him three Jade x Whisper embryos and he got three pregnancies.” Of those, Hillpoint Partners and Voegeli Farms had one bull calf and two heifers. Top Acres Jade Wendy scored ‘VG86’ and she had a Very Good daughter at Bradner Farms in BC, Canada; three other Very Good daughters in Wisconsin and Massachusetts and a 90-point Protype daughter at Voegeli’s. The other daughter, Top Acres Jade Whimsy ‘2E90’ with 30,450M 1,434F 1,020P at 6/08, went on to have 40 daughters. Five of those are Excellent and 12 Very Good. The highest scored daughter is V B HP Supreme Worth ‘EX93’ in Oregon.
One of Whisper’s most notable daughters is, of course, Top Acres EJ Whizzbang ‘5E93’, a 7X nominated and 4X All-American cow. With records to 27,720M she was also a National Total Performance winner in 1996. She has 32 offspring that include multiple All-Americans, high-scoring cows and sons in A.I. Her
My T Fine Whisper ‘2E90’ is the outstanding brood cow behind the prominent “W” family found throughout Brown Swiss shows in North America and beyond!
son, Top Acres C Wonderment, an All-American and Premier Sire at Madison, has 1,977 daughters as well as being the sire of more current favorites, Chilli Pepper, Tanbark, Bosephus and Durham. He has well over 130 Excellent daughters with two scored ‘EX94’ and multiple ‘EX93’ cows.
Another Whizzbang son, Top Acres BC Whistler ET was purchased by Forest Lawn Farms, Wisconsin, and used as a herd sire, resulting in 51 daughters of which 35 were scored Very Good or Excellent. A daughter, Forest Lawn Whistler Molly ‘EX94’ was purchased by Rottinghaus and Woods, Ohio, and was a 2X All-American and Grand Champion at Madison. Several other sons had multiple Excellent and Very Good daughters across the country including Top Acres Winslow, sire of Top Acres MB CW Joelle ‘EX91,’ her daughter Fairdale Banker Joanna scored ‘EX93’ for the Sparrows of Kentucky. Top Acres JP Whizzkid ET sired an Excellent daughter along with several Very Good daughters for Lee-Anns Swiss in Iowa while Top Acres Winning Pilot had 53 daughters of which 13 were Excellent and Very Good.
Whizzbang’s daughters were just as impressive. Top Acres Andre Whisper ‘2E93’ is the dam of Top Acres Supreme Wizard ‘5E95,’ a multiple All-American and Grand Champion at Madison as well as 4X All-American nominated Top Acres Supreme Wisp ‘3E95.’ Together, Wizard and Wisp are the only 95-point full sisters
and 3X All-American Produce. Wisp has multiple Excellent daughters and sons in several herds across the country as herd sires. Wizard is the dam of Top Acres Wizdom and Top Acres Cad Winrite ETV, as well as 82 daughters. Wizard’s daughter Top Acres Braiden Wiza ET ‘E91’, owned by Lindsey Rucks-Pettit of Florida, was Junior Champion at Madison, the same year Wizard was Grand Champion, a rare feat.
Another Wizard daughter is owned by Elite Dairy, New York. Top Acres Peppy Wizella ET is ‘E94’ and has proved to be a profitable venture for Ken Main and Kenny Joe Manion. Numerous daughters and sons have been sold both privately and publicly. Wizella is also an All-American and former Grand Champion.
Whizzbang is also the dam of Top Acres Peerless Wynn ‘VG88,’ developed by the late Dennis Smith of Dublin-Hills in Maryland. The DeMays of New York purchased Whizzbang’s daughter, Top Acres Jetway Wizard ET ‘VG85’ and have a tremendous group of offspring from her foundation. Top Acres Peerless Wyla ET ‘E91’, another daughter, was purchased by Frosted Beauty Swiss in Iowa and was the dam of Frosted Sieg Wammy ET ‘2E93’ Supreme Champion of the Southern National in 2013 and a 2X All-American. She was purchased and developed by the Sparrows of Kentucky and is the foundation of many of the Fairdale ‘W’ cows.
Top Acres EJ Whizzbang ‘5E93’, 7X nominated and 4X AllAmerican and daughter of My T Fine Whisper.
Forest Lawn Whistler Molly ‘EX94’ is sired by Top Acres BC Whistler ET, a son of Whizzbang.
Top Acres Andre Whisper ‘2E93’ is the dam of Wizard & Wisp and daughter of Whizzbang.
Jenlar Carter Waltz ET ‘E91’ was Intermediate Champion of the 2019 International Brown Swiss Show and had 5 daughters nominated All-American in 2023, including Jenlar Rasta Westlynn ETV, Junior Champion at World Dairy Expo.
Topp B-3 Woodford was named Intermediate Champion at the 2023 International Brown Swiss Show and was exhibited by Topp-View and Brothers Three. She is a granddaughter of Brothers Three Wisper OCS, the foundation cow for the Hushon brothers.
Whizzbang’s highest scoring daughter, Top Acres Peerless Willow ‘EX94’ was an All-American and later owned by Scott Blair and George Bush of Michigan. She completed a record of over 33,000M 1,926F and 1,182 protein. Her daughter, Top Acres Global Winnie was also an All-American. Willow went on to have several more Excellent and Very Good daughters throughout the U.S. and Canada.
Another prolific and profitable Whizzbang daughter was Top Acres Jetway Wish ‘2E91,’ the dam of Round Hill Pre Wishful ET ‘2E91,’ bred by Cindy Warner, Maryland. Wishful sold as the highest selling Brown Swiss bred heifer of all time purchased by Springhill Farm in the Starmark Sale for $65,000. She was later acquired by Top Acres and Garrison Brothers as a dry donor cow producing 10 Excellent daughters. One, Top Acres Garbro Wanda, was purchased by Cindy Warner and has continued to develop into a profitable and productive brood cow for Cindy. A Supreme x Wishful embryo package was sold in the 2010 Kentucky National, purchased by Larry and Jennifer Meyer of Wisconsin, which resulted in Top Acres Garbro S Wish ET ‘E93,’ a 2X All-American and the dam of Jenlar Carter Waltz ET ‘E91’ an All-American. Waltz is a much sought after donor dam in today’s marketplace.
Jumping back to My T Fine Whisper, another daughter was Top Acres EJ Whistle ET ‘4E90.’ She had another whopping 27 offspring and is the foundation of Brothers Three Wisper OCS *TM. Jake Hushon of Brothers Three wrote, “Brothers Three is best known for our line going back to our foundation and Superior Brood Cow Brothers Three Wisper OCS. Wisper herself is a descendant of My T Fine Whisper and even today our two newest B3 animals are of the “W” line that has garnered multiple All-Americans in our program along with many other trophies and honors.” Wisper scored ‘2E92’ and had multiple All-American honors herself.
A fifth generation from Whisper, Top Acres Durham Wintu ET ‘VG87’ is establishing a high-index branch of the family. She is being developed by the Masheks in Iowa and proving that this family continues to develop to meet the demands of today’s Brown Swiss breed. Tanner Mashek commented, “We were looking at a show family to tap into at the time, and jumping
into the World of Whizzbang was a no brainer to us!” Wintu’s ‘E91’ Doboy, Hilltop Acres DB Whisper, pictured below, is another up-and-coming member of the Whisper family.
Waltz, Wizdom, Wanita, Winanna, Wintu and succeeding generations backed by Whisper have established her supremacy as a brood cow extraordinaire. Embryos have been exported from both Whisper, Whizzbang, Wizard, and other family offshoots throughout the world.
As evidenced from the multitude of offspring sired by a wide variety of bulls, the genetics from this family have been profitable ventures for anyone that has bought into the family over the years. The results from sales, banners and the bulk tank speak for themselves.
All because Whisper wasn’t pregnant when it was time to leave for Brazil – what a stroke of luck for all who have profited from her genetics.
