“Playing volleyball in Brazil taught me that volleyball was not only my extracurricular activity, but my job. I started playing volleyball when I was twelve, and my level of commitment was high. I learned really quick at that age how to take volleyball seriously. Taking in consideration that volleyball is the second most popular sport in Brazil (only under soccer in popularity), volleyball teams prepare several kids to the real world. They do not focus as much in playing time to everyone, and having fun with it, even when you are young. So, growing up playing sports in Brazil, you know that if you do not work hard enough, you are not going to play as much as you want (even if you are the tallest, strongest, or oldest on the team). These aspects built my mental toughness, competitiveness and commitment with volleyball. Playing volleyball in the United States, I learned how to be disciplined on and off the court, and if there is no discipline, there are consequences. So, I can tell you that I have never ran so much in my life, on a track, in the gym or up and down the stairs since I started playing volleyball in the US. Coaches expect players to manage their time, get to the gym early, get extra reps, improve their volleyball statistics, better lifting weight performance, prepare themselves to the game (watching film and studying the opponent, for example), and make a self-evaluation after matches, and all the above requires discipline. Furthermore, since in the US, sports and school are interrelated, part of the discipline aspect comes from doing your work outside of the court, such as making sure players go to class, they are not late, they participate in class, they go to study hall, and they get good grades. I learned in the US, how important discipline is in order to have a successful program.”
COWLEY COLLEGE Coaching Staff You played volleyball in the United States and Brazil. What is the difference in playing volleyball in the two countries?
You had a two important mentors in your time at Cowley with Coach Jenifer Bahner and Coach Riann Mullis. What impact did they make on you as a person, player, and now a coach?
Lana Da Silva Milner
“They were the first coaches who introduced me to high levels of discipline, which I applied as a studentathlete, and now I am learning to transfer it to my coaching style. Another way Coach Bahner and Coach Mullis have impacted my life was through trusting. They believed in me even more than I believed in myself, and that pushed me to go beyond my potential. They were also the coaches who took my mental toughness to the next level, making me perform under pressure. Coach Bahner and Coach

Mullis pushed my team to high standards, so being the best was the expectation. Another way they have impacted my life was through teaching me the importance of community involvement/community support. As a player, and now as a Coach, socializing and getting the community involved with the team are two aspects that I value. Both of my coaches helped me to build my discipline and character. They helped me to be a better person, woman, Christian, volleyball player, and coach. Their leadership was definitely crucial to me and my teammates’ success.”
What is your Pre-Match Ritual?
Lana Da Silva Milner
What do you like to do in your time away from volleyball?
“My time away from volleyball is dedicated to go to church, spendtime away from is dedicated to go to church, time with family and friends, and watch movies and TV series.”time with and friends, and watch movies and TV series.”
What is your favorite quote? My favorite quote is a Bible verse: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” - Romans 8:28

On the Kansas Jayhawk Conference...
“This sophomore class is a very coachable group who has a burning desire to improve and compete each day. They gained a ton of experience during their freshmen season and contributed greatly to our successful 2021 season.
“Wow, I have coached for over twenty years and I have never been in a conference this loaded with talented teams. The KJCCC has five to seven teams that are in the top 25 in the nation each year. In 2021, we had five teams in the top twenty in the NJCAA national rankings. Unfortunately, only two of those five teams could make the national tournament one finshed national runner-up and the other finished third in the national tournament. This strong

During the off-season, they have worked extremely hard to enhance their skills and are ready to lead the newcomers as they adjust to Cowley volleyball. They got a taste of post season play and fell just short of one of their goals, in winning a national championship. They are hungry to make that a reality in 2022. They have been such a great bunch to coach. I am so proud of each of them and their dedication to excellence.”

COWLEY COLLEGE 2022 Season Outlook
On the makeup of this year’s team... “This team is an extremely gifted and hard working group who has a strong desire to compete at a high level. Along with their talents, they are also a fun group that is so full of postivity and energy. They all get along extremely well and work well together. When we brought recruits in, every recruit was impressed by how well the team got along and cared for each other. They have great balance in that they are intense when then need to be but they are also fun when they need to be. Team chemistry is just great and we see that, combined with their talent, that will push them far this season. We have ten sophomores and four freshmen on this roster and each player is experenced and skilled to help us play at the highest level. We have players who played on national teams, state and regional championship teams, and were honored with many volleyball honors and achievements.”
“The 2021 season was such a fun season, from the first day our players were together until the national championship match. We accomplished so much in making it to the national championship, winning conference and district championships and being given individual honors. However, we never focused on those things, rather we focused on the process or the journey of our season and the love we had for each other on and off the court. Yes, we fell short of our goal to win the national championship, but we won so much more that is lasting. That said, we did fall short of that goal and that has pushed us in our off-season training, in our recruiting, and in our pre-season training. While we work toward our goals, we have to keep in mind that we are a team that everyone wants to beat because of our previous successes. That is where we want to be but, at the same time, we have to continue to stay in the present, trust the process of improvement, enjoy the journey of our season, and go after our opponents and play to our standards.”
On improvements for the team...

“Whether it be in practice or in a match we want to improve everyday. There are always things that we can do to be better. We can always speed up our offense and we have worked to do just that, especially with our new players learning our offensive system. Also, we want to continue to improve our overall defense that will constantly stop our opponents and get the ball to our strong offense. We constantly place huge emphasis on our serving in serving aggressive at our opponents. We feel that the serve is our first line of defense and if we get a team out of system and take away options for them, then it is easier for us to defend them.”
The Cowley volleyball team begins a new season and is excited about what waits in store for the team. Coach Steven Gream was asked to give his thoughts on his sophomores, the team, and more.

COWLEY COLLEGE 2022 Season Outlook
“Setting is critical for every team, but it is especially impor ense that runs a very fast ense. Setters have a split second to see their opponent’s defense, make a decision on who to set, receive the pass, and then deliver the perfect set to the hitter with the tempo we require. We have been blessed to have had the top setters in our conference and in the ense smoothly. So, when we recruit setters, we are very observant in their skills, leadership, court vision, and athleticism that our offensive system requires. We feel that we have two exceptional setters that will shine in the 2022 season. Rossana (Papa), had an amazing freshman season and was a key component to our successful 2021 season. Due to an unforseen injury, she will red-shirt the 2022-23 season and serve as a student-assistant helping Coach Lana Milner with our setters. In 2021, she was named NJCAA First Team All-American, AVCA Second Team, VolleyMag.com All-American, First Team All-Region, First Team All-Conference, KJCCC Freshman of the Year, and KJCCC Setter of the Year. “We have been blessed to have had some outstanding hitters since I have been here at Cowley, most recently the sophomores of 2021. That group included Cowley’s alltime hitter and two other All-District hitters. Now in 2022, the returning and incoming freshmen hitters will be called on to carry on this success. We feel that they all have the talent, desire, and ability to do just that. One exciting thing for us, is that we have a majority of our 2021 off returning and we also some solid freshmen hitters joining them. Plus, we have players who can play multiple positions and play them well… most teams dream of having that kind of depth and we can’t wait to see them all in ac-

She sees the floor exceptionally well, which goes perfectly with her variety of sets and shots, to pick apart an opponent. Coach’s Comments: “Rachele came to our program and brought a competitive swagger to our team. She hates to lose and brought that mentality to our team and play on the court. Her all-around skills provides great balance to our offense and anchors our defense, plus she adds one of the top serves in the nation. On offense her powerful and consistent arm swing allow her to keep defenses honest while her ‘libero like’ defensive skills allow her to shut down opponents and provide a solid pass to our setters.”

COWLEY COLLEGE 2021 Season Summary 62 Cowley College Volleyball Reference Guide • cowleytigers.com •
The Cowley College volleyball team had high hopes for the 2021 campaign after a tough 2020 shortened Covid season. The program was returning several prominent players and bringing in key freshmen for a competitive season in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC). In the 2021 campaign, the team posted their 42nd twenty plus win season and their 21st straight winning season, continuing their streak of successful seasons. The Lady Tigers finished the season 41-1 while going 10-0 in conference matches. The team also finished NJCAA National Championship Runner-up, won the Plains A District Championship, won the KJCCC DII Conference Championship, posted a 41 match winning streak, was No. 1 nationally ranked, and received a No. 1 seed in the NJCAA National Tournament. The KJCCC has always been one of the toughest conferences in the NJCAA. 2021 was no different with five teams being ranked in the top 20 in the national polls and having two ranked in the top five all season. This created a strong race for the top spots for a national tournament run. The season started at the Central Community College Kickoff Classic with four 3-0 sweeps over Iowa Lakes, College of St. Mary JV, Southwestern, and Dakota College at Bottineau. From there, Cowley defeated conference foe Johnson County 3-0 on the road. Johnson County, at the time, was ranked No. 1 and the defending national champion. The team then added three more wins (and 3-0 sweeps) over Rose State, Lamar, and Friends University JV to finish out August. September started with another important match against then ranked No. 9 Neosho County, who had eliminated Cowley from the District tournament in 2020. Cowley defeated Neosho County 3-0 and began a busy September with 14 matches that included the KCK Tournament and the Cowley Invitational tournament. Going into the Cowley Invitational, Cowley had a streak of 20 straight matches of 3-0 sweeps. However, on the second day of the tournament, the Lady Tigers ran into NJCAA DI foe Cisco College who played the team tough and took the first set of the match. Cowley bounced back and won the next three sets for the win. Four Cowley players were named to the All-Tournament team – Iva Halacheva, Rossana Papa, Laci Beougher, and Gyongyver Araczki. With the sweep streak ended, the team focused on their October schedule. October would be a tough month for the program with numerous ranked teams, strong conference opponents, strong NJCAA DI opponents, and the challenging Triton Invitational Tournament. By October, the Lady Tigers had moved up in ranks to second in the nation and was setting things up for a No. 1 vs No. 2 showdown with No. 1 ranked Iowa Central at the Triton Invitational tournament. In the tournament, Cowley met up against No. 15 Des Moines Area (DMACC), No. 11 Kirkwood, North Iowa Area, and then the host No. 1-ranked Iowa Central. Against No.15 DMACC, DMACC took only the second set of the season off the Lady Tigers but Cowley took the set 3-1. Next was a 3-0 sweep over No. 11 Kirkwood, then the next day defeated North Iowa Area 3-0 to set up the match against top-ranked Iowa Central. Going into the match, both teams were undefeated and were primed for a great match. Cowley utilized their strong serve, fast offense, and scrappy defense to create pressure and runs for the Lady Tigers as they defeated Iowa Central 25-22, 25-16, 25-23. Three players were named All-Tournament as well as were awarded honors of the tournament. Iva Halacheva was named MVP of the tournament, Rossana Papa was named Best Setter of the tournament, and Erin Thompson was named Best Libero of the tournament. Now ranked No. 1, Cowley looked to finish the season strong with key KJCCC opponents and strong non-conference opponents left on the schedule. The Lady Tigers added sweeps over Coffeyville, Northeastern Oklahoma A & M, and Ottawa University JV to set up another important match up, this time, for the KJCCC regular season championship. This match-up was against No. 9 Highland who, like Cowley, was 9-0 in KJCCC conference play. The winner of the match would win the championship. Like with Iowa Central, the Lady Tigers answered the challenge and

defeated No. 9 Highland 3-0 on their home court to win the first conference championship for the program since 2016 and earned a one-seed in the Plains A District Beforetournament.post season play, Cowley had two more matches to prepare for the tournament. The Lady Tigers traveled to Cisco Texas to take on NJCAA DI programs Cisco College and Navarro College. Navarro had won the NJCAA DI national championship in 2019. Cowley defeated Cisco 3-0 but ran into a tough Navarro College losing just their third set of the season, in losing the first set, then going on to win the match 3-1. The stage was now set for the Plains A District tournament with Cowley hosting the first round. Cowley would sweep through Coffeyville and Kansas City to win the District championship for the first time since 2017. Upon winning the District Championship, the Lady Tigers qualified for the NJCAA national tournament in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and were given a one-seed for the tournament. The team was sent off by the Cowley community and traveled to Iowa Western to practice, then on to Grand View University to practice, before arriving in Cedar Rapids. Once at Cedar Rapids, the team practiced on the playing court and attended the opening ceremony banquet where the team was recognized and head coach Steven Gream was awarded Plains A District Coach of the Year. Following the banquet, the players were treated to videos of encouragement and advice from former Lady Tigers who had played and won in the national tournament. They were also surprised by a special message from USA Volleyball team captain Jordan Larson who also offered encouragement and advice before they started the tournament. The first round of the NJCAA national tournament put the No. 1 seeded Cowley against No. 16 seed Montgomery College. The Lady Tigers used an aggressive serve and a balanced attack to take the 3-0 win. Later that night, Cowley would take on No. 8 seed Kirkwood. Cowley had defeated Kirkwood 3-0 earlier in the season and looked to repeat the same result. Once again, Cowley used their strong serve, balanced attack, and strong defense to cause problems for Kirkwood and win the match 3-0. Day two of the tournament, placed Cowley in the semi-finals against KJCCC conference foe No. 4 seeded Johnson County. Cowley defeated Johnson County earlier in the season 3-0 but the Cavaliers had improved since the first meeting and were playing very well late in the season. The Lady Tigers dominated Johnson County from the opening set and won 25-15, 25-23, 25-21 as they punched their ticket to the national championship match. Day three of the tournament, was for the national championship. The championship match pitted No 1 seeded Cowley with a record of 41-0 against No. 3 seeded Parkland with a record of 55-3. Both teams were ranked one and two in almost every offensive category and both played well in the tournament to reach the match. Parkland came into the match with much experience in the tournament, having finished runner-up in the match for three straight years and eighth in the previous nine years.
Parkland came out hitting strong in set one and handed Cowley just its fourth set loss of the season (25-20). Cowley, facing adversity for one of the few times this season, came out swinging in set two and evened the match at a set a piece by winning 25-20. How ever, Parkland took a 10-5 lead early in set three. Cowley would answer back and pull within 16-14 but could not get over the hump as Parkland held on for the 25-21 win. With its season on the line, Season

Cowley scored five of the first seven points of set four. But, once again, the Cobras regained control to lead 1610. The Lady Tigers would not quit, pulling within 20-16, but Parkland proved to be too much on this day as they scored five of the final six points to claim their first national title since 2016. Cowley finished the season 41-1 and NJCAA National Tournament Runner-up. Two players were named NJCAA All-Tournament - Iva Halacheva and Rachele Tessari. Season and post season honors were numerous for the team. Seven members of the 2021 Lady Tiger team received KJCCC honors.
