pring is in the air and we are celebrating weddings! We are so excited to feature past Miss Rodeo Arizona, Taci Howe’s wedding in this issue and on our cover. We have also included some fun wedding ideas on our wedding pages.

How many of you loved the eighties movie, “Man From Snowy River?” Well, we are featuring Aussie fashions in our Rodeo Runway section with fashions from “Outback Trading Company.” These romantic Australian styles will bring the outback feel to your look.

Seven Comon Mistakes Horse Owners Make By: Calum Steel

Stopping bad habits forming is easier than fixing them when they become serious problems.

Many serious, and potentially dangerous bad habits in horses started as little annoying (maybe even cute) habits. Stopping bad habits forming is easier than fixing them when they become serious problems. After spending several years fixing these problems for people it was obvious many of them came from some common sense areas as follows...

Not teaching the horse to lead. It is suprising how many problems people have handling a horse properly. Generally you will find a horse that is hard to do anything with on the ground (grooming, loading into floats, etc) comes back to either the horse was never taught to lead properly or has been aloud to develope bad habits when leading.

The size and strength of a horse makes being taught to lead properly a very important lesson, and one that should be reinforced whenever you handle the horse. Do not let the horse pick up bad habits to start with.Think about the things you do with a horse on the ground... The majority comes back to leading, loading onto a float, in and out of stalls, moving a horse around during grooming, etc. All of these and many more have a basis in leading. not lead properly start teaching it today.

Letting a horse move off when mounting. This is a very common error for people to make. It may not sound like a very big problem until you have seen what can happen. Someone is mounting a horse, the stirrup iron or their boot is a bit wet, the horse starts to move off and they slip and end up on the ground and stood on by the horse.

Things like that dont happen do they? Yes and it has the potential to cause serious injury and even death. Dont risk it, teach your horse to stand while you are mounting until you give the command to move off.

Acting as a playmate to the horse. Yes you can have fun with your horse but the horse must understand you are not an equal or lessor in the herd. Horses are herd animals and within a herd there is a hierarchy. You need to have your horse look to you for leadership not see you as its equal or lessor member of the herd.

Rushing the horse when learning something new.

Some people do not have the patience to teach new things to their horse and get bored or frustrated quickly. Take your time when teaching anything new to your horse and you will get more progress than rushing.

Introduce new things in stages and do not move onto the next stage until the horse is comfortable with the previous stage. Always finish a lesson on a positive note as it makes it much easier to continue the training the next day.

Letting the horse have its head when going home.

This is a common mistake for young riders. It does not take young riders long to realise it is easier to make the horse go fast on the way home so why not do it.What these riders do not realise is they are forming the habit in the horse of rushing home.

Many horses I have seen that are bolters started in this way. A bolting horse is not only dangerous to the rider but the horse and innocent bystanders as well.The easiest way to fix this problem is not to let your horse get into the habit to start with. Get into the habit of walking the last quarter mile home. This not only helps eliminate this fault but also gives your horse time to cool off after a ride.

Giving up when teaching something new. This is related to rushing a horse when learning something new. Do not start teaching your horse something unless you have the time and skills to complete the task. If you

find yourself out of your depth ask for help from someone more experienced. Follow the same guidelines outlined in number 4.

Not checking your tack before use. How does this relate to bad habits? Your horse bucks and you think that is just the way he is... A small splinter of wood in the saddle cloth or saddle digging into my back would make me buck too.

Your horse fidgets when being girthed. Same as above or a girth that has not been cleaned and has sweat and dirt embedded in it is not very comfortable. My horse throws its head all the time.

That sharp bit of metal on that old worn bit would make me throw my head in objection too.As you can see poorly maintained tack -Calum Steel can cause what appear to be bad habits in yur horse. It only takes a minute to check your tack before each use and can save alot of trouble.

The Arabian Breeders World Cup event returns to the South Point Equestrian Complex for the twelfth consecutive year. The show is a celebration of the Arabian breed and the lifestyle associated with owning Arabian show horses. INSP’s original series The Cowboy Way sets the stage for real-life cowboy adventures. This one-hour series follows three modern-day cowboys – Bubba, Cody, and Booger – as they build their cattle business in south Alabama and have a whole lot of fun along the way.

The Old West meets the Deep South with these three friends who spend their days herding cattle, breaking horses and tilling fields while taking time to sip a little sweet tea. These men live by a code that is as important to them today as it was to the cowboys who first tamed the West. They work hard, play hard and depend on each other. When the sun goes down, they head home to hang with their wives, babies and those they love. Their days may not be easy, but these three friends wouldn’t have it any other way.

Bubba Thompson

Cody Harris Bubba Thompson is a rancher and skilled carpenter. He and wife, Kaley have a fun-loving relationship, often teasing and joking around. Retired pro-rodeo, calf-roping champ, Cody Harris produces popular rodeos. As he adjusts to life on the other side of the arena fence, he is supported by his wife, Misty. They are devoted to each other, often sharing poignant moments. Chris “Booger” Brown is an expert cattleman and a renowned horse trainer. When it comes to joking around, he can give as good as he gets, but should a friend or neighbor need his help, the jokes take a back seat, and he’s ready to help in an instant. Together the cowboys own Faith Cattle Company.

In each episode, you’ll share in Bubba’s, Cody’s and Booger’s emotional stories—the business and life challenges, the accomplishments, the joyful events, the unconditional support, and the fun. Get ready to go into their homes and ride into the herd!

Season three of The Cowboy Way will feature nine episodes.

Former Miss Rodeo Arizona, Taci Shaffer Howe, gives us a scoop on her beautiful wedding and more!

CIS Magazine: How did you and your husband meet?

Tacie Howe: Cassidy and I met when I was 19 years old in Las Vegas at the World Series of Team Roping Finale. He was there roping and “ for the National I was there with my girlfriends Finals Rodeo. I walked into the South Point Casino around 4am after an adventurous night exploring the strip of Las Vegas with my friends.

My friend Kayli ran up to me to tell me she had met some good-looking guys. When I walked over my eyes instantly were drawn to Cassidy.

I acted coy and as he began to put the charm on me. Secretly, I thought he was sooooo handsome. He told me that he was from Arizona, but that his family does a lot of road work in Utah.

So, he asked for my number and said that he would like to take me on a date the next time he is in Utah. The rest was history in the making.

CIS: Was there a romantic proposal you could tell us about?

T.H.: I love the way we that Cassidy proposed!

He took me camping with the horses up in the mountains near Payson, AZ. We went on a horse ride and he decided that we were going to carve our initials in one of the trees along the trail ride. So, we carved our names and then he got out his phone and said “let’s take a picture”.

I knew something was up because he never asks to take pictures, and he was really nervous. He mumbled and stumbled his words as he got down on one knee and asked me to be his bride.

I thought it was so sweet and thoughtful of him.

He had me in tears. When we got back to the trailer I found rose petals and candles. He was so nervous that he totally forgot them. He said the way he proposed was not how he had it planned but he said he couldn’t wait any longer and it felt like the perfect moment.

Wedding Day!

CIS: Are you both into the country lifestyle, horses, the works?

T.H: Yes! The western lifestyle is embedded deeply in our roots. I have had it in my blood since I could remember. Horses have always been my serenity, love and some of my greatest accomplishments in life. My passion was always to be a rodeo queen. I was the National High School Rodeo Queen, Miss Rodeo Arizona, and first runner up to Miss Rodeo America. I have competed in everything from all the junior and high school rodeo events, reining, roping and everything in between.

It has been especially fun to be with him because his family has a ranch in southern Idaho. I love going up to the ranch with him in the summer. We have a lot of firsts there. Our first date, first kiss and its really where we fell in love. He came from a rodeo family. He had junior rodeo’d as a kid, and team roped most of his life. He took time away from roping to work at his grandpa’s ranch in Southern Arizona right out of high school. In his early 20’s he spent a lot of time on the road working for his family business that his mom and dad started over 20 years ago. He got back into roping just a few years before we met. I am glad he did because it was his roping that gave us the opportunity to meet in Las Vegas.

CIS: What were your wedding colors?

TH: My wedding colors were red, black, white and sparkly gold!

CIS: Please describe your wedding look, colors, displays, any special events that happened during.

Any guests you would like to mention?

T.H.: I was never really the type of girl that had been planning my wedding day all my life. I always imagined something exciting like running off secretly and getting married. However, when it really came down to it, I realized how much it would mean to me to have my dad walk me down the aisle. I wanted my wedding to be a day to share our love with all of those that we love. Once I had decided that we weren’t going to run off I thought how I would love to have my wedding in my hometown that I grew up in. I wanted it there because everything that I am now, I owe to that charming community, and all of the wonderful people I grew up with. Cache Valley is a beautiful valley surrounded by exquisite mountain tops so it was the perfect setting for our wedding. Like I had mentioned it was so important to have my dad walk me down the aisle. Nevertheless, what some might not know is just how significant it was to incorporate my beautiful buckskin mare into my wedding day.

She has played such an indispensable role in my life and I believe she was heaven sent just to be mine. My dad and I share the same love for her, he found her for me when she was a filly. It truly meant the world to me that my dad led me down the aisle on her back. There was never a moment so special, I love my dad and I love my horse.

CIS: We love your mini! What place did you have her in your wedding? What was her role?

T.H.: Thanks! I sure love my little Bitsy Boo!!! Cass got her as a Christmas present for me last year. I had been looking for a mini horse for two years. I was picky and wanted a young filly, that was either buckskin, dun or palomino. When I found her, she was selling in a Facebook auction all the way over in SC. She was cute as they ever come. Cassidy and I bid on her and that was the best Christmas present I ever received. We both love her so much.

So of course, I had to have her in my wedding. She was my flower girl!

CIS: Besides getting married, what have you been up to since your Miss Rodeo Arizona reign?

T.H.: Miss Rodeo Arizona, and being first runner up at the Miss Rodeo America competition has led to some really neat opportunities. I was awarded a generous amount of scholarship

funds at the pageant and I have been in school ever since. I am studying to become a Registered Nurse. I also spent a year traveling with rodeo entertainer/barrel man, JJ Harrison and we hosted a rodeo show together. I have continued to be active in the equine community and sometimes you can even catch me doing a spot on the Cowboy Lifestyle Network. I really enjoy spending time roping and riding with my husband on the family ranch. I have acquired a true love for breeding, raising and training young horses. I welcomed my first foal (Charmer) into this world last spring.

It is my dream to continue breeding high caliber performance horses. I also adore spending time with my mini Bitsy Boo, traveling, writing, spending time with my family and friends, snow skiing, hiking and running in competitive races.

The Western Wanderer Calico Ghost Town Written By: Cort Flynn

This ghost town is full of life and activity. The town, now run by San Bernadino County as a historical park, is full of tourists from around the world.

I

n December of 1955, when I was 4 years old, my family took a trip to southern California. On the way my dad took an exit in the high desert and pulled into a wonderland for a kid that had been raised on the Lone Ranger, Zorro, and Roy Rogers. It was the ghost town of Calico which had recently been purchased by the Knott family of Knotts Berry Farm fame.

“The sherriff recommended coming to the special ghost tours if you like being scared out of your boots.” -Cort Flynn There was not a soul [living] around and apparently nothing had yet been done on restoration. My brother and I spent the next couple of hours exploring the abandoned buildings, imagining all the shoot-outs and bar fights that had transpired there. We decided to trick our parents, who had been taking a nap, and told them we had run into Roy Rogers riding his horse in the hills. They didn’t believe us.

On a recent visit I found this ghost town full of life and activity. The town, now run by San Bernardino County as a historical park, was full of tourists from around the world.

Calico was founded in 1881 when silver was discovered. When the price of silver dropped in the 1890’s the miners left, living behind buildings and mines. Walter Knott rediscovered it and bought the old buildings. He restored it and began letting people come and see a real old west town.

You will see lots of old original homes, saloons, and churches. You can explore the old Maggie Mine, ride the Calico Odessa train, see staged shoot-outs in the street and eat in the old saloon. I talked to the sheriff and he recommended coming to the special ghost tours if you like being scared out of your boots. He says he has had encounters with ghosts himself.

If you go, you will need to exit near the town of Yermo in the high desert. Exit at Ghost Town Road on I-15, near Barstow. You can also camp at the Calico with your RV, tent, or even stay in the MiniBunk House with a reservation. Hope to see you wandering the West and as Roy Rogers would say, “Happy Trails!”
